Barrett Carter on Cincinnati Bengals Rookie Camp
Transcript
00:00First day, how does it feel so far?
00:02It feels great.
00:04First time being in Cincinnati, got here yesterday and got on the field today and got to move around.
00:10It was a little chilly, so I wasn't used to that, but it was a great experience just getting out there,
00:14moving around, getting coached up, so yeah, it was super fun.
00:18What are the first couple things that you're focusing on in these first couple days?
00:22Yeah, diving in the playbook.
00:24Just kind of learning a whole new defense, different from what we did at Clemson.
00:28Some similarities, but just a whole new terminology, so just really trying to dive into the playbook
00:33and pick up on their verbiage and try to get on the field, so just been trying to dive in the playbook.
00:39What was it like signing your contract yesterday?
00:41Oh my gosh, it was probably the second most surreal moment of my life.
00:47Number one, I would say is getting that call on draft day, but yesterday, it was special
00:52and a moment that I'll probably never forget the rest of my life,
00:55and I immediately called my parents after and filled them in, but it was a super special moment,
01:01so I'm ready to get to work now.
01:03What have the talks been like with the coaching staff?
01:05Is it about expectations and maybe generalities as opposed to specifics at this point?
01:12Yeah, I mean, they told me that they have a good plan for me and a lot of expectation for me.
01:16They don't want me to come in and take a backseat to anybody.
01:19They want me to come in and be who I am from day one, and that's what I plan to do,
01:23so I'm just trying to come in here and show my value and create value for myself
01:28and just get coached up from the older guys, from the veterans, and get coached up from the coaches,
01:33so just trying to show them who Barrett Carter is.
01:36Have you gotten a chance to talk to or meet Logan or any of the other vets yet,
01:39and have they given you any advice?
01:41Yeah, a bunch of them texted me right after I got drafted,
01:43so that was actually Logan was the first one to text me, so I was like, whoa,
01:49because I grew up playing with Logan on Madden and all this stuff,
01:53so it was super cool just to see that text on my phone,
01:56and he just let me know that anything I ever need, I can always reach out to him,
02:00and some other guys reached out.
02:03Is it Andre, the receiver?
02:06I don't know how to pronounce his name.
02:07Yeah, yeah.
02:08He reached out to me, Chase Brown, so a bunch of guys reached out,
02:11so it was super cool just to know that I have them in my corner coming into a new place,
02:16but, no, it was definitely a surreal moment seeing that text on my phone for sure.
02:20How long do you think the wow factor lasts, and when that wears off,
02:24how much are you looking forward to just getting down to the business of learning?
02:28I'll say it wore off pretty quick.
02:30You know, I stepped into this building.
02:31I'm super excited to say the least, but, you know, I stepped into this building,
02:35like ramped up, I'm like, okay, it's just time to go,
02:37but then I had to just get back to square one and just, you know, put my learning hat on
02:42and just be a sponge and just absorb everything I can, you know.
02:45Like I said, talking to the veterans, trying to learn, see what I can do to improve my game
02:49and, you know, get on the field as fast as possible.
02:52So, I mean, I was pretty, I would say I was a little ramped up just walking in the building,
02:57but I calmed down a little bit, and now I'm just a sponge trying to soak everything up.
