00:30I don't think the fact that Cardinal Prevost was from the United States had much weight.
00:37I like the comment of the gentleman who just spoke.
00:42It should not startle us that we would look to Pope Leo as a bridge builder.
00:48That's what the Latin word pontiff means.
00:51He's a bridge builder.
00:53Will he want to build bridges to Donald Trump?
00:55I suppose, but he would want to build bridges with the leader of every nation.
01:02So I don't think, I don't think at all, my brother Cardinals would have thought of him as a counterweight to any one person.
01:11Actually, yesterday people were chanting USA, USA in St. Peter's Square.
01:16And very soon, within 10 days, he'll begin almost daily meeting with leaders of the world
01:21who will come for rather substantive discussions.
01:26I presume one of them down the line would be the President of the United States.
01:30Would that be of more heft than the other ones?
01:33I don't think it would in his eyes.
01:38Cardinal Dalton, before you were sequestered, you told me that you were hoping for a pope.
01:43We were over 130 people with different languages, cultures, backgrounds from more than 70 countries.
01:53And within 24 hours, we were able to come to unity in making a decision.
02:02I hope that's a signal to the world that we can reach across our differences in culture, language, country, nationality,
02:14and work together to solve the problems that are there,
02:18that we have the opportunity to reconcile and have peace.
02:24Monsignor and the faculty here at the college, along with the seminarians studying.
02:28You know, you carry your bell up to the front of the hall, you deposit it,
02:33and you say a few words in Latin to say,
02:35I'm standing before God, and Michelangelo reminds you of our ultimate destiny.
02:42And as best as I can say, this is the one that I think is indicated.
02:50Then I walked back and I took a look at Bob,
02:55because his name had been floating around.
02:59And he had his head in his hands.
03:02And I was praying for him,
03:04because I couldn't imagine what happens to a human being
03:07when you're facing something like that.
03:11And then when he accepted it,
03:14it was like he was made for it.
03:17He just, all of whatever anguish
03:19was resolved by the feeling that I think,
03:23that this wasn't simply his saying yes to a proposal.
03:27But God had made something clear,
03:29and he agreed with it.
03:30We represent every corner of the United States.
03:34It has been so welcoming,
03:35and it's a joy to witness the community's enthusiasm
03:38over the last 20 hours.
03:41We're so pleased to be joined this afternoon
03:43by the Cardinal electors.
03:46We have seven of them here.
03:49Closest to me is Cardinal Daniel DiNardo,
03:51Archbishop of Marriages of Galveston, Houston.
03:53We have Cardinal Timothy Dolan of New York.
03:57Cardinal Joseph Tobin of New York.
04:00I think the impact of him being an American
04:05was almost negligible in the deliberations of the conclave,
04:15surprisingly so for me.
04:16I'm a newer Cardinal,
04:20and I talk to many of those who are from different places,
04:23many far flung,
04:24because you know Pope Francis made Cardinals
04:26in the peripheries.
04:27I was a particularly important witness.
04:31And what surprised me was the real absence
04:35of that being a key question at all in this conclave.
04:41I'd like to give each of you an opportunity
04:42to give a brief reflection
04:44on this great moment in the life of the Church.
04:46I felt comfortable saying to Pope Leo,
04:51from one Southsider of Chicago to another,
04:54I promise you my respect,
04:59my fidelity, and my love.
