00:00Hello and welcome to Manchester World and welcome to Tomberden.
00:03Now this little place might be the best place that you've never visited.
00:06It exists just outside of Greater Manchester and is right on the border between Yorkshire and Lancashire
00:10and we're here today because of its market.
00:12Now it can often be overlooked for its more famous neighbour Hebden Bridge
00:16but this place really does have a lot to offer.
00:18Chiefly its amazing desire to have independent businesses here
00:21and the awesome community feel around the whole place.
00:25And also was pretty famous a good couple of years back for having quite a lot of UFO sightings for a small town.
00:30So we'll go have a look at the market and maybe we'll bump into an alien or two.
00:34Now it'd be pretty difficult for me to describe Tomberden's markets by myself
00:37so here it is in the words of those who work here.
00:40My name is Tony Gill. I run a hardware store which sells almost anything.
00:46If you want it I can get it.
00:47I like to serve the public obviously and I've got a big range of stuff.
00:52My grandad started it in the early 20s and my father took it on in the 40s it'll be.
00:5940s, 50s he started working with it and I took it on in 88.
01:03By and large it's just a friendly place and the market all itself is
01:07everybody knows each other and they look after each other sort of thing.
01:12I try and help as many folk as I can.
01:14I like mending stuff. I go out locksmithing and I put curtain tracks up for the older people, the older age pensioners.
01:24The indoor part of it is thriving at the moment.
01:27Friendly, open people who will look after you if you're in trouble.
01:32You know, it's just a friendly place.
01:37Started here when I was 12.
01:38Got to tell you.
01:40It's a bit quirky.
01:41People are normal.
01:44Not natural, you know what I mean?
01:45No airs and graces.
01:46Just normal people.
01:48People go to the supermarket and they'll come here.
01:50You know, do the shopping you need.
01:51Get the groceries in the supermarket.
01:53Tins and things like that.
01:55Get the vegetables outside.
01:56Meat and bread.
01:57We can tell you where it's come from.
01:58You know what I mean?
01:59I mean, my meat comes from six miles away.
02:02Something's never changed.
02:03There's always something different.
02:05Always something to talk about.
02:06I can see.
02:07I think the variation of stuff that you see here is right across the board from modern to antique.
02:15There's jewellery.
02:16To be honest with you, the people of Tom Eden are fabulous as well.
02:20There's such diversity here.
02:22It's like walking to that bar on Star Wars.
02:24It's just, the people are just so various.
02:27I come here because the rarity of this market and the people that come here are from far and wide.
02:34There's always, you know, something to see and something to discover.
02:37So there you have it.
02:38Just a 20-minute train ride away from Manchester.
02:41You have one of the most friendly, welcoming, brilliant market towns that you could possibly hope to find.
02:47The indoor market is full of brilliant food and drink options and traders that have been here for a long, old time.
02:52And the outdoor market has one of the best flea markets.
02:54So get yourself down here, give it a try and follow Manchester World for more.
