00:00Extraordinary game. Thanks so much to Gary and to Rob.
00:03As Rob mentioned there, Inter Milan did beat Barcelona in one of the most famous semifinals ever back in 2010.
00:10But that was a very different second leg, a 1-0 affair that Jose Mourinho described as the most beautiful defeat of his career.
00:17They weren't beaten tonight. They dug this out. They won by four goals to three.
00:21They've actually conceded more goals in these two matches, that's six, than they had in the entirety of the competition up until this point.
00:27They'd only conceded five in 12 games. Kenny, how do you begin to explain how Inter have come through that?
00:32Shay?
00:37Where to start was engrossing from start to finish. The beauty of this game for me was actually in its imperfection.
00:43I'm not going to say this game was perfect from start to finish at all levels of the game.
00:47There was moments of individual brilliance. We were pulling our hair out at times.
00:53There was real kind of Evan flowed to the game. Huge amount of character showed from both sets of players, I'd have to say that.
01:01Young, Jamal, for me, this evening, oh, and he's actually gone up in my estimations.
01:06We know how good he is in terms of a footballer.
01:09Well, we've seen tonight in terms of what a strong character he is in terms of personality.
01:14Because 15 minutes into the second half, his game was falling apart, Jamal, he couldn't do anything right.
01:19And it almost felt as if single-handedly he brought Barcelona back into this game.
01:23But ultimately, for me, on the fundamentals of the game over the years haven't changed.
01:27It's basically how effective you are in possession and out-possession of the football.
01:31Were Barcelona effective in possession over these two legs? Absolutely scored six goals.
01:36Out-possession, not good enough.
01:38Shay?
01:40You've had time to think about it now.
01:41I don't know where he starts.
01:42I mean, Rafinha scored in the 89th minute and you thought it was good night, Vienna.
01:45You thought Inter Milan were out of the competition.
01:47Even some of the Inter Milan fans left.
01:49You could see the concourse getting full up with fans leaving.
01:51The fans believed.
01:53But I'll tell you what, these players believed.
01:54And a Cherby to turn up in the 93rd minute.
01:57A Cherby who's 37 years of age, by the way, in a heavy swamp pitch legat.
02:01And the finish, by the way, to make it free-free to go the extra time from a 37-year-old centre-half, not a centre-forward.
02:07But it's just phenomenal.
02:09The game and everything, we talk about, I know the guys, probably the goal scorers will get a lot of the headlines.
02:13But Jan Sommer as well, as an ex-goalkeeper myself, some of the saves were just phenomenal.
02:17They really were.
02:18I mean, high-end saves.
02:20No, you know, some goalkeepers would never get anywhere near them.
02:23So he deserves great credit as well.
02:25I mean, Martinez, we didn't think should start, didn't look fit.
02:27Got a goal and I think an assist as well, won the penalty, didn't he?
02:30So I don't know where to start.
02:32I've got that much paper written, that much stuff.
02:34The guys have done no homework.
02:34I think I've done too much homework.
02:36I've had so many goals, so much talking points.
02:38Well, I was going to say, I wouldn't be pushing Ontario Martinez too hard there
02:40if you wanted to be fit for the semi-final, or for the final.
02:42Because he didn't look 100% today, but he was still centrally involved in the first half.
02:46You've got a lot of time for that man, Kenny, that young man,
02:48who did his best tonight in trying circumstances.
02:51But, Neil, ultimately Inter Milan got over the line in extra time.
02:55So why don't we start there?
02:56And the fact that they showed the composure,
02:58the one moment of composure with Fertese scoring the winner.
03:01Yeah, I mean, it's a well-worked goal.
03:02It's poor.
03:03Listen, you know, my tip was Inter to get through,
03:07but certainly not in the way that I would have imagined this tie to go.
03:11And, you know, I'm going to sound like the Grinch here,
03:13but Barcelona have snatched...
03:15Don't do it, Lenny.
03:15Don't do it.
03:16They've snatched defeat from the jaws of victory.
03:19Their game management was poor, Owen.
03:20They've all the talent, they've all the attacking talent.
03:23They've scored six goals, but they're still out of the competition
03:26because they can't defend.
03:29And, yeah, I mean, it's a great way to watch football at times,
03:32but when you come up against a team as street smart as Inter Milan
03:35and street savvy, you're going to get done,
03:38and that's what's happened to them tonight.
03:40And credit to Inzaghi and his men.
03:42You know, they're stuck at it, stuck at it,
03:44but they were second best for long, long periods of the evening.
03:47And football's a cruel mistress sometimes,
03:51and they've got a lot to learn in Barcelona from this.
03:53Yeah, there is the odd occasion when you're doing this kind of work
03:56where you're kind of scratching around for things to talk about post-match.
03:58But as Shea said, there's a lot to get...
03:59We're trying to get through as many of Shea's notes as we can
04:01after the break, because it was a pretty good first half,
04:04certainly by Inter Milan.
04:06It was a ridiculously exciting second half,
04:08especially the last five, ten minutes,
04:09and it kept going in extra time.
04:12Inter Milan ultimately are through to the final again.
04:20Here we go.
04:22The Champions!
04:27The Champions!
04:28The Champions!
04:52From quarter past three on Sunday.
04:54W.A. Fertese got the late winner
04:56in the first leg of the quarterfinal in Munich
04:58that was ultimately enough
04:59to get them through to the semifinal.
05:02And he scored the final one of 13 goals
05:05over the course of two incredible legs
05:07to qualify them for the Champions League final.
05:11And another iconic Italian football celebration
05:13to match, I think, there from Fertese.
05:16So,
05:17the start there, I guess, Shea.
05:19The winning goal.
05:20Yeah, and work her way back from there.
05:22Yeah, exactly.
05:22Yeah, why not?
05:23Because there's a lot to get through.
05:24Yeah, I mean, it's a fully deserved,
05:26actually, victory in the end,
05:26I think, chance whatsoever.
05:28Corbazio, look back at that
05:29and you're absolutely right.
05:30Maybe take one big step forward,
05:31force him into having another touch.
05:33But,
05:34always,
05:35we're always,
05:35stop the danger at source
05:37and Arugio there,
05:39he's got,
05:40Turam going in the opposite direction,
05:41he's got him heading towards
05:42the touchline there.
05:43How he allows him to get turned
05:45and drive on the inside back into the box,
05:47it's almost unforgivable.
05:48I have to say,
05:49I did like the composure, though.
05:50Not much composure in the celebration, Neil,
05:51but just to take that extra little touch,
05:53that extra half a second
05:54and then curl the finish in.
05:57He sort of sold the dummy
05:58and then use Carbassio as a,
05:59you know,
06:00a block for the goalkeeper.
06:02For the shield, yeah.
06:03Yeah, and just bend it around him
06:04and it was a brilliant finish.
06:06But,
06:06Kenny's right,
06:06she's never got that position.
06:08Symptomatic of Barcelona
06:09over the two legs.
06:10Inter Milan were
06:122-0 up at half-time.
06:13Not for long, though,
06:14because Barcelona came out,
06:16we were half expecting,
06:17maybe fully expecting.
06:18Not under a huge amount of pressure,
06:19but had to keep his concentration
06:20just arrowed into the corner.
06:22And at that point,
06:23he just felt as if
06:24all the forward momentum
06:26was behind Barcelona.
06:27I think you felt that as well.
06:28You know,
06:28you're the only one here
06:29to predict Inter
06:30to go through tonight,
06:31but you had your doubts
06:31at that stage?
06:32Oh, no question.
06:34I mean,
06:34everything was with
06:35Barca.
06:37Martinez was struggling.
06:39You know,
06:39Mkhitaryan was starting to struggle
06:41just through the legs.
06:43Cana Lugge,
06:44who was struggling.
06:44There had no momentum
06:45in the game,
06:46Inter,
06:46and it was just all about
06:47could they hold Barcelona out?
06:49But Barcelona
06:49are too good
06:51to be held out
06:51for such a length of time
06:53and,
06:53you know,
06:53they had great chances
06:54on to win the game
06:56by more.
06:56You know,
06:57and then the third goal
06:58did come for them
06:59in the 80s.
07:00Messed at that period of the game.
07:01Confidence,
07:02individual like players
07:04struggling with injury,
07:05loss of confidence,
07:06self-belief,
07:07couldn't make two or three
07:08quick passes,
07:09Barcelona swarming
07:10all over them
07:11and that was really
07:12a 3-2.
07:13It would be difficult
07:13to make an argument
07:14at that point.
07:15You couldn't see,
07:16you couldn't make an argument
07:17for Inter Milan
07:18getting back into that game.
07:19That's also a feeling
07:19his 32nd goal of the season
07:21which is absolutely outrageous.
07:2221 goals plus assists
07:23in the Champions League.
07:25I know, yeah,
07:25but just to cap it off
07:26with that moment
07:27it looked like he redeemed
07:28as it felt like
07:29it was a moment for him
07:30that actually obviously
07:31we thought of winning
07:31the game at that stage
07:32and something Inter Milan
07:33fans thought the same
07:34and it would have
07:34sort of papered over
07:35probably a poor performance
07:36from him.
07:37But it was a great finish
07:37and Torres on the line
07:38actually does well
07:39not sticking a toe wipe
07:40because he just jumps
07:41out of the way
07:41would have been given
07:42offside of course
07:42but at that stage
07:44we thought Barca
07:44were going for due.
07:45We did
07:45but then
07:46Asherby
07:47taking a step away from him.
07:49It's a great finish as well.
07:50Great finish,
07:50great finish.
07:51It's two and a half minutes
07:52into five minutes
07:53of injury time.
07:54You just got to see it out
07:55you know
07:56and they don't defend
07:57that situation
07:58anywhere well enough.
07:59We were talking about
08:00the high line
08:01and everything
08:01they weren't doing
08:01a high line there
08:02as such.
08:02No it was just
08:03the basic
08:04win the first header.
08:05Kabassi doesn't win
08:06the first header.
08:07Stop the cross.
08:07Yeah Martin
08:08just get rid of the ball
08:09doesn't.
08:09Tries to take a touch
08:10gets this possessed.
08:11Don't get pinned
08:11one v one in the box.
08:13Honestly
08:13keep going.
08:15It's an easy game.
08:16Even like
08:16at the fourth goal
08:17it's the same.
08:17You know
08:18Oryjou gets turned
08:18they get pinned in the box
08:20Fratezi gets a shot off.
08:22Maybe it's an experience
08:23from some of them
08:23but it's close to them.
08:24I was going to offer that
08:24as an excuse
08:25they are vastly inexperienced
08:26in the Barca
08:27since Inter Milan
08:27and I think
08:28De Jong's the only one
08:28who's ever played
08:29in a Champions League
08:29semi-final before
08:30is that an excuse?
08:32It's a mitigating circumstance
08:33there's no question
08:34Is that not the same thing
08:35as an excuse?
08:35I don't know.
08:36I just used that big word.
08:39But they've conceded
08:40seven goals
08:40you know
08:41and you're not going to win
08:42big ties like this
08:43by conceding seven goals
08:44it's a great philosophy
08:46he has
08:47you know
08:47the attacking player
08:48is absolutely brilliant
08:49but he hasn't got
08:50the balance right.
08:51Do they really give
08:52as much time
08:53on the training pitch
08:54Monday to Friday
08:55we'll never know
08:55in terms of
08:56Hansi Flick and his
08:57coaching staff
08:57in terms of
08:58collective defending
08:59and individual defending
09:00in your area of the pitch.
09:01Well he said the word
09:02structure three times
09:03in one answer
09:04in his pre-match
09:04which I can only think
09:05that means defensive structure
09:06as well as offence.
09:07What about some individual defending?
09:09Because I look at that
09:10Kubarsi there
09:11I think he's a lovely player
09:12he's got great potential
09:13he's a very talented kid
09:14but what kind of information
09:15what kind of education
09:16is he getting at that
09:17football club
09:18in terms of improving him
09:19individually
09:20as a defender?
09:21I'm not too sure
09:22I'd question that
09:23is he really going to improve
09:24and develop into a world class
09:26central defender
09:27at Barcelona?
09:28I'm not too sure.
09:30They are so much fun to watch
09:31though
09:31and they had so many chances.
09:33The one from Garcia
09:34and the one from Jamal
09:35full stretch to his right
09:37Don't forget about
09:37the first leg as well
09:39sorry Kenny
09:39but do you remember the save
09:40not long after Jamal had scored
09:41that wonder goal
09:41he nearly got an even better one
09:43and there was a beautiful
09:45fingertip save
09:45onto the crossbar
09:46by Sommer
09:47these are the moments
09:47that seem like
09:48well again if you look
09:49over the course of two legs
09:51Sommer's definitely played his part
09:52over the two legs
09:52deserves a lot of credit.
