John Healey has paid tribute to the "courage and sacrifice" of the "greatest generations of Britons" that achieved victory in Europe 80 years ago today. 00:00This is 80 years to the day when we achieve victory in Europe, the end of fighting in Europe for a generation.
00:08It's a day that we can mark the courage and sacrifice of what was the greatest generation of Britons that secured that victory.
00:16It's a day to celebrate, but it's also a day to, I think, reinforce the determination to try and secure the peace again
00:27that they fought so hard to achieve 80 years ago.
00:31And at a time when threats are increasing and we have war on the continent of Europe again for the first time for 80 years,
00:38this is a moment that requires Britain, as we are, to step up our defense spending alongside European allies
00:45and to continue to lead as we are attempts to get a ceasefire and a long-term peace in Ukraine.
