The prime minister has held a phone call with the US president after agreeing a "historic" trade deal. Speaking from the White House, Donald Trump says there could not be a "more perfect morning to reach this historic agreement", given that the deal has been announced on the same day that Europe celebrated victory in World War II. Sir Keir Starmer replied by paying tribute to the historic, close partnership between the UK and US, adding that "the timing couldn't be more apt". Report by Brooksl. 00:00This morning I'm thrilled to announce that we have reached a breakthrough trade deal with the United Kingdom, an incredible country.
00:08Today is a victory day for World War II.
00:12We won the war together exactly 80 years ago, so there could be no more perfect morning to reach this historic agreement.
00:20And it's beautiful weather out, I will tell you that here, beautiful weather, so it's perfect outside.
00:24But it's really, in particular, the agreement with one of our closest and most cherished allies.
00:34And we're so happy that that's the way it worked out.
00:37Once again, I want to thank Prime Minister Storm.
00:40He's been terrific for his partnership in this matter, the special relationship and external bond.
00:45It's really an external and an internal bond between our two countries.
00:50We'll soon be stronger than ever before.
00:51We really do. We have a great relationship.
00:54I want to just say that the representatives of the UK have been so professional.
01:00And it's been an honor doing business with all of them, and in particular with the Prime Minister.
01:05And I'd like to introduce him now to say a few words.
01:08Mr. Prime Minister, please take it away.
01:11Thank you, Mr. President Donald.
01:13And this is a really fantastic historic day in which we can announce this deal between our two great countries.
01:22And I think it's a real tribute to the history that we have of working so closely together.
01:29Can I pay tribute, Donald, to your negotiating team as well, particularly Howard and Jameson, who've done an incredible job, a very professional job, and my team as well.
01:40Two negotiating teams have worked at PACE now for a number of weeks to bring in this deal today.
01:48Really important deal.
01:49This is going to boost trade between and across our countries.
01:53It's going to not only protect jobs but create jobs, opening market access.
01:59And as you say, Donald, the timing couldn't be more apt because not only was it 80 years ago today that victory came for Europe after and at the end of the Second World War.
02:16But of course, on that day, the UK and the US stood together as the closest of allies.
02:22And you may or may not know that it was about this time of day, exactly 80 years ago, that Winston Churchill announced victory in Europe.
