00:00But perhaps raises a few eyebrows and a few questions when it comes to the cost, because when it last operated, as we were saying just a little earlier on, I mean, the average cost per prisoner was three times higher at Alcatraz than it was in ordinary prisons because everything had to be boated in.
00:15There was no water supply. There's no sewage. I mean, it's not the most practical place to have a prison, is it? Why not start from scratch somewhere else?
00:23Yeah. I mean, look, I think what we've seen over the years in the United States is a lot of difficulty in cost management when it comes to prisons.
00:32And, you know, obviously you want to make a place that's secure. You want to make a place that's escape proof.
00:39But you also want to have it as a place that's economical for the people that work there, the administrative folks, the guards.
00:45That's what makes Alcatraz such a different baby, that you're literally on this tiny island in the San Francisco Bay.
00:51So you're right. It's not necessarily, you know, economically the best case scenario to have a place like that.
00:57But the flip side is it was around for 29 years and it was escape proof.
01:01And between the practical realities of where it's located and the symbolism, I think, again, it's not an absolute,
01:08but a definite chance that this is going to be looked into and something that can be refurbished in coming years.
