00:52Hello and welcome to From the South.
00:58My name is Belen de los Santos.
01:00I'm from a tele-story studio in Havana, Cuba.
01:02We begin with the news.
01:15We now begin with the information.
01:17In Haiti, dozens of demonstrators held a rally in the hills of the Capitol,
01:21demanding an end to violence and the resignation of the country's Prime Minister
01:25and the Presidential Transitional Council.
01:27This latest rally comes one day after hundreds of Haitians gathered in the Capitol, Port-au-Prince,
01:33to honor community leaders killed during clashes with criminal groups.
01:37The protesters denounced that the growing humanitarian crisis in the country has left 1,600 dead
01:44and more than 500 wounded from January to March alone.
01:48The Haitian National Police has had difficulties in its fight against criminals
01:52due to the insufficient number of police personnel and funds from the mission supported by the United Nations.
01:5913 workers of a small mine linked to gold production were killed by miners working illegally in a northern region of Peru
02:12after being held hostages for several days.
02:16The kidnapping and subsequent murder of the workers occurred in a small artisanal mine
02:22operating within the concession area in the province of Patas.
02:26The crime took place despite the fact that the region is in a state of emergency with police and military presence
02:32due to constant attacks on the mining company.
02:36In this sense, the company has denounced that 39 people among collaborators and artisanal miners
02:42have been killed by criminal gangs that took control of Patas.
02:46In Brazil, the police arrested two people suspected of planning an attack on a concert of U.S. singer Lady Gaga in Rio de Janeiro.
02:59The suspect, including teenagers, are linked to an organization that spread hatred against the LGBTQI plus community,
03:08the singer's main audience in the event.
03:10The group intended to generate chaos by using homemade bombs and Molotov cocktails
03:15at Lady Gaga's concert in Copacabana, which gathered around 2.1 million attendees.
03:22The free show was held under a heavy security operation with more than 5,000 police officers deployed.
03:29Thus, it was considered a success as no serious incidents were recorded.
03:40In other news, along the Colombia-Panama border, the jungles and native peoples of the Darien Gap region face an environmental crisis.
03:56In 2021, the region became the epicenter of an unprecedented migratory crisis with 1.2 million vulnerable people crossing.
04:05While this flow of people has virtually disappeared, the region now faces unforeseen environmental consequences.
04:12Authorities estimate 2,500 tons of garbage have been accumulated in the Darien Gap
04:19and that it would cost around $12 million just to clean it up.
04:24Mineral criminal groups have exploited their control of the migratory routes to carry out illegal gold mining,
04:30logging and coca production in the dense jungle.
04:35We don't bathe there anymore.
04:42When you bathe there, you get itchy rashes.
04:45And for the children, it's even more dangerous for them.
04:49Why?
04:50Because the water is polluted.
04:52There is a lot of garbage.
04:57Culturally, fishing is our way of life.
05:00And now, when we go fishing, we are practically eating fish full of gasoline.
05:06And that affects our health.
05:08Now we have a short break coming up.
05:10But first, remember you can join us on TikTok at Tell Us for English,
05:13where you will find news in different formats, news updates, and much more.
05:18Stay with us.
05:18Welcome back to From the South.
05:38Vatican authorities are finalizing preparations for the celebration of the conclave in the Sistine Chapel,
05:43where 133 cardinals will gather to elect a new pontiff on May 7th.
05:48The Holy See has announced that two bonfires and a chimney have been set up at the site to emit the white smoke
05:55that signals the appointment of the successor of the late Pope Francis.
06:00Until an agreement is reached, the black smoke will continue to be emitted.
06:03The test will consist of four daily votes, two in the morning and two in the afternoon.
06:09If necessary, a direct and obligatory second ballot will be held between the two cardinals
06:14who received the most votes in the previous ballot.
06:18In all cases, a two-thirds majority will be required.
06:21On Monday, during his state visit to Russia, Cuban President Miguel DÃaz-Canel laid a wrath at the Motherland Monument
06:32at the Pisgah-Rovskoye Cemetery in the city of St. Petersburg.
06:36The cemetery contains a total of 186 mass graves,
06:40where the bodies of 420,000 inhabitants of the former Leningrad are buried,
06:45as well as 70,000 soldiers who defended the city.
06:48The Cuban president arrived in Russia on Sunday to take part in the events
06:53dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the victory over Nazism in the Second World War.
06:59DÃaz-Canel was received upon his arrival in St. Petersburg by the governor of the city,
07:03Alexander Beglov, with whom he will share an intense agenda
07:07that includes visits to important scientific centers.
07:10Spanish authorities reported that thousands of people were affected as a result of the sabotage
07:20to a high-speed train network in different parts of the province of Toledo.
07:24The Minister of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, Oscar Puente,
07:28detailed that four robberies were registered within a radius of 10 kilometers.
07:34The Civil Guard has already started an investigation and asked for citizen collaboration
07:39to obtain information about those responsible.
07:42According to preliminary data from the Railway Infrastructure Administrator
07:46and the Ministry of Transport,
07:49the thieves stole approximately 300 meters of copper cable,
07:53which caused more than 6,300 passengers on 18 trains
07:58to be affected on the Madrid-Sevilla high-speed line.
08:06In Germany, the conservative-led coalition signed on Monday
08:10a governing agreement ahead of the start of a new chancellor's Friedrich Merz term in office.
08:15In this way, Merz's party, the conservative Christian Democratic Union,
08:20signed a 144-page deal with the Christian Social Union
08:24and the center-left Social Democrats.
08:26The agreement, announced on April 9th after a round of coalition talks,
08:31paves the way for the swearing-in of the new government on Tuesday, May 6th.
08:36The coalition is set to further far-right alternatives for the Germany party
08:40from governing, in a context where the opposition bloc is filing a lawsuit
08:45against the German intelligence agency after being labeled as right-wing extremist.
08:56We go now to the United States as candidates aligned with Donald Trump
09:00and the extreme right have suffered a heavy defeat in the local elections in Texas.
09:05Last Saturday, May 3rd, municipal elections were held in the state of Texas
09:09for the purpose of electing city councilmen, school board members,
09:14and other local representatives.
09:16Elected officials play a crucial role in addressing local needs,
09:20from education to public safety to community development.
09:23In this context, voters statewide decisively rejected extremist candidates
09:27and elected leaders who prioritized public education, inclusion,
09:32and pragmatic governance over culture wars and partisan agendas.
09:36Also in the U.S., President Donald Trump announced in an interview
09:46his intention to negotiate with China, but without contemplating the idea of tariff reductions just yet.
09:53The U.S. head of state admits the impact of his tariff war,
09:57but says that he will not give in until achieving an agreement that benefits the United States.
10:02Following that line, Trump refused China's demand for tariff reduction to end trade war,
10:07although he did not rule out lowering tariffs only if it benefits U.S. companies and businesses.
10:14For his part, Chinese President Xi Jinping left the door open with the United States,
10:19but insisted that any agreement must be on equal terms.
10:22In also this context, President Donald Trump ordered the expansion and reopening of the Alcatraz Maximum Security Prison,
10:34where he intends to hold the country's most violent prisoners.
10:38On a post on his Truth Social Profile, the head of state announced that he has ordered the Federal Bureau of Prisons,
10:46in collaboration with the Department of Justice, the Department of Homeland Security,
10:50and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, to reopen the Alcatraz high-security prison that was closed over 60 years ago,
10:58which is located on Alcatraz Island off the coast of San Francisco in California.
11:03Trump also suggested that undocumented immigrants could be sent there.
11:08Where did you get the idea for reopening Alcatraz?
11:15Just an idea I've had, and I guess because the judges, so many of these radicalized judges,
11:21they want to have trials for every single thing of it.
11:24Every single person that's in our country illegally, that came in illegally,
11:29that would mean millions of trials, and it's just so ridiculous what's happening.
11:33And it's long been a symbol, Alcatraz, of whatever it is.
11:39I mean, you know, it's a sad symbol, but it's a symbol of law and order.
11:44And, you know, it's got quite a history, frankly.
11:47So I think we're going to do that, and we're looking at it right now.
11:50We have a second short break coming up, but before we invite you to visit our Facebook page at Celestore English,

12:37Welcome back to From the South.
12:42The Israeli government has unveiled a plan to expand its military operations in Gaza in the coming weeks,
12:48taking over eight deliveries to the devastated Palestinian enclave.
12:51The plan, which was approved at a security cabinet meeting on Sunday,
12:56furthers the Zionist regime's genocidal operation on the enclave.
13:00Reportedly, the proposal would involve an offensive to move the Gaza population south.
13:05In addition, the plan proposes the military be in charge of administering food and other vital supplies
13:11to the 2.3 million people suffering under its siege of the Palestinian territory.
13:17Israel renewed its bombardment of Gaza after breaking a short-lived ceasefire,
13:23with troops reinforcing kilometer-deep buffer zones along the perimeter
13:27and blocking the entry of humanitarian aid and food to the strip.
13:32In this context, the United Nations, together with Palestinian and international organizations,
13:41rejected the Israeli plan of action, which they asserted would prevent the most vulnerable from getting it.
13:48Through a statement, the entities noted that much of Gaza will remain without supplies,
13:54in violation of the humanitarian principles of humanity, impartiality, independence and neutrality.
13:59It further added that Israel's intention was to tighten up control over basic needs as a pressure tactic
14:06or as part of a military strategy.
14:09The Netanyahu administration has maintained a full siege on the Palestinian enclave for 64 days,
14:15subjecting the population to starvation.
14:18The United Nations called for senior European Union officials to face charges of complicity in war crimes
14:30for the support of Israel's regression towards Gaza.
14:33A complaint against the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen,
14:38was filed at the International Criminal Court in May of 2024
14:42for complicity in war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.
14:47UN reporter Francesca Albanese also said that she has been working on a coverage exposing banks,
14:54pension funds, technology companies and universities' involvement in Gaza's destruction.
14:59The Israeli forces have stepped up its lethal attacks after breaking a two-month ceasefire on March 18th
15:07so that it had imposed a complete siege on humanitarian aid, electricity, food and water since March 2nd.
15:17Meanwhile, Yemeni authorities denounced a new U.S. and U.K. aggression
15:24in which at least 15 civilians were killed in the city of Sanaa.
15:28The airstrikes hit a densely populated area in the Shuru district east of the capital.
15:35The health ministry added that one person was also wounded after a bombing north of Sanaa.
15:40During the same day, the United States mounted an incursion into the governors of Sanaa, Saadaa, Marib and Al-Waf
15:47with at least 21 airstrikes.
15:50The Pentagon claims to having attacked over 800 targets in Yemen since March 15th of this year.
15:57In other news in Syria, an attack on a nightclub in Damascus killed one person and injured others.
16:10The second such incident in the past 24 hours.
16:13According to local media, a group of armed extremists opened fire inside the K1 club near the central square of Al-Qijaz.
16:22This event comes almost a day after a similar one at the Club Night of the East in Al-Muhafzah Square
16:30where the attackers beat and chased the men and women out of the place.
16:35Since the fall of the government of Bashar al-Assad,
16:38the number of extremist actions against religious minorities, alcohol shops and bars has increased significantly.
16:52Vietnam's National Assembly has prepared for a 37-day session to address key decisions for the country's future.
16:59Secretary-General Le Quang Thuong announced that the Parliament would debate and vote on three constitutional resolutions,
17:0751 draft laws and 14 thematic blocks related to socioeconomic issues, the state budget and government supervision.
17:14One of the main affairs would be the vote on the resolution on the merger of provincial administrative units
17:20and the creation of the National Electoral Council.
17:23A nationwide popular consultation on the constitutional reform would also be held from May 6 to June 5
17:30in order to involve citizens in the crucial process for the future of the country.
17:44Since 1994, the Cuban RomerÃas de Mayo have convened the World Festival of Artistic Youth
17:54which brings together in HolguÃn the best creators and artists from the island
17:59and in other countries to celebrate Cuban culture in all its manifestations.
18:03Our colleague Giordanis RodrÃguez with more information.
18:07Every May, when spring arrives, in eastern Cuba, HolguÃn becomes the capital of young art.
18:12The May Pilgrimates or RomerÃas de Mayo in Spanish in its 32nd edition
18:16are dedicated to cultural industry in favor of brotherhood and solidarity among nations.
18:23It has been really incredible.
18:25I hadn't had the opportunity to participate before, but it was really wonderful.
18:30I haven't seen something so big culturally.
18:33It is a whole week.
18:34I hope it never sleeps so I don't have to sleep and can enjoy it.
18:37Thus began what has become over time the World Festival of Artistic Youth.
18:44From the modern parts of the city to the historic center,
18:47the national and foreign participants joined the inaugural parade.
18:51We have approximately 30 countries here, invited to the pilgrimages.
19:02Some of them are Canada, Mexico, Italy, Venezuela.
19:06With the premise of integrating tradition and modernity in defense of the identity values of our peoples,
19:12the Association Hermano Saiz joins the voices of several parts of the world
19:16because, as its motto reaffirms, there is no today without yesterday to continue creating in favor of culture.
19:25Super cool.
19:26The Cuban spirit is like that, and we have to show it to the world.
19:29All the arts come together, for every taste, every color.
19:33The magnificence of Cuba, where culture is united and becomes one.
19:37It is the theme of pilgrimages.
19:38I go to the hill in the company of the people as part of the tradition.
19:42From today, this also becomes a space to debate about this war
19:46and the constant struggle against the cultural colonization to which they try to subject us.
19:52From Olguin, we defend the cultural traditions, the identity of the peoples.
19:56We are here, on Fidel's balcony, where he spoke to this city once,
20:06that we would make it possible to defend a dream,
20:09to multiply universities, to make a country that not only resists,
20:14but that we'll be able to pass once again all the tests.
20:17Beyond all the dreams, this enormous island once again beacon of this continent.
20:23I hope that another day, many will join us, and the world will be one.
20:29The pilgrims reached the hill of Vallado or Loma de la Cruz.
20:33They climbed some 462 steps.
20:36It was from this point that Pope Francis blessed the city in 2015 when he visited Cuba.
20:41The young artists absorbed the Catholic tradition
20:44when a Franciscan friar carried a wooden cross up the hill.
20:48For 32 years, the Acts of Olguin has been carried on the shoulders of these walkers
20:53and on the last day of the pilgrimage,
20:55the same acts traveled through the city on the highest modern point of the city
20:59as part of the celebration of joy.
21:01Like this, we have come to the end of this newspaper.
