00:00Cardinals from around the world have been called to Rome in the wake of Pope Francis'
00:04death.
00:05They're now gearing up to elect his successor, and a string of names are being seen as potential
00:10contenders.
00:12Among them is Pietro Parolin.
00:15The Italian Cardinal served as the Vatican Secretary of State for most of Francis' papacy,
00:20making him the Pope's chief advisor.
00:24Familiar with the intricacies of the Holy See's central government, Parolin is also
00:28well known to world leaders and diplomats, and has experience in the Middle East, Asia
00:33and Latin America.
00:35Another name being mentioned is Pier Battista Pizzaballa.
00:38Born in Italy, Pizzaballa moved to Jerusalem at the age of 25.
00:43Pope Francis named him as the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem in 2020.
00:47My thoughts go without distinction to all who are affected by this war in Palestine and Israel
00:52and the whole region.
00:56He has impressed fellow Cardinals with his understanding of the conflict in Gaza, though
01:00his closeness to Francis could count against him among Cardinals wanting a change in direction.
01:06Filipino Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle was considered a potential candidate for the role as far back
01:12as the 2013 conclave which saw Francis selected.
01:16The former Archbishop of Manila has become one of the church's leading figures.
01:20He's been dubbed by some as the Karaoke Cardinal.
01:24Imagine all the people
01:28Shearing all the world
01:34He's proved energetic in media coverage, including when Francis visited Manila in 2015.
01:42It's like a big, big, big, big national fiesta.
01:47He's called for the church to re-evaluate its stance towards gay people.
01:51That's not the case for Cardinal Fridolan Ambongo Bosungu, who hails from the DRC.
01:57Archbishop of Kinshasa for seven years, Ambongo is a cultural conservative and is against blessings
02:03for same-sex marriage.
02:05As the conflict in the DRC rages on, Ambongo has repeatedly called for peace.
02:12We're going to find solutions to our crisis that have been going on for decades,
02:20by engaging even with those we consider our enemies.
02:26Another name that has emerged is Jean-Marc Aveline, who, if elected, will be the first French
02:32Pope since the 1300s.
02:34Considered close to the late Pope, he has spoken out against the criminalisation of immigrants,
02:39a stance very much in line with that of Francis.
02:42A highly secretive process, the conclave is set to begin on May 7th.
