00:00The ABC, the national public broadcaster, actually called the election about half an hour ago and it looks like indeed Labour is going to be returned to government.
00:10And actually, well, it is personally the third Australian election I'm covering and the election has never been called this early.
00:19So that gives you an idea of how big a victory it is for Labour and most importantly, how big a defeat it is for the coalition,
00:28the Conservative Union of the Liberal and the National Party.
00:32Actually, projections seem to say that their leader, Peter Dutton, might lose in his own electorate after being elected 20 years.
00:40Apparently he's losing to a Labour candidate that is new to politics.
00:44So it shows you how, I guess, out of touch they've been with voters in this election.
00:50As you said, domestic issues have dominated the campaign, cost of living, housing,
00:55and it seems that apparently Labour had more answers to provide for voters with these things.
01:03Anthony Albanese did promise some tax cuts, some subsidies for childcare, which is very expensive in Australia,
01:11or financial help for first home buyers.
01:14Apparently it did resonate with voters, while Peter Dutton has led, according to many observers, a pretty bad campaign.
01:23He made some serious mistakes and apparently, yeah, just wasn't able to get it over the line this time around.
01:31And it seems at the same time that his political career might be actually finished.
01:36And Donald Trump's shadow, some said, was looming over the campaign. What impact did it have?
01:42Well, obviously, a very bad one for Peter Dutton, who inspired himself a lot from Donald Trump.
01:50These last few weeks, he used a lot of his rhetoric. He used as well some of his ideas.
01:56Actually, we found out just a couple of days ago that a Trump campaign director actually came to Australia to coach him a few weeks ago for this campaign.
02:04And this, well, just didn't work with Australian voters apparently.
02:10For example, just last week, he called the ABC the hate media.
02:14He also promised to cut thousands and thousands of public servants' jobs.
02:19And yeah, apparently the message didn't pass muster here in Australia.
02:25I have to point out about that, that Donald Trump doesn't really have a very positive image here.
02:32Just a few weeks ago, a survey was conducted with more than 5,000 people who were asked,
02:39who do you think is the biggest threat to world peace?
02:42And Donald Trump came first in front of Vladimir Putin or Xi Jinping.
