00:00:21Hi there, it really was a dismal showing from the Indians in the one-dayers,
00:00:25so the cricket-mad public back home were demanding a much better showing in this, the first of three test matches.
00:00:31Dominic Cork, a veteran of 37 test matches, is with us here in the studio.
00:00:35Plenty to come from him over the next two hours or so.
00:00:38Now there was some real controversy on the first morning and horrendous error from the groundsman had left the wicket wet
00:00:45and play was held up for 90 minutes.
00:00:48All sorts of equipment trying to be used to get the pitch fit for play.
00:00:53Now, team news. South Africa left out Andrew Hall from their squad of 12,
00:00:58and India, well, they went in with six batsmen, three seamers and just the one spinner, Anil Kumle.
00:01:04They left out Harbour Jansingh, Munaf Patel and Irfan Patan.
00:01:08India won the toss, they decided to bat first, and here's what happened.

00:19:19it's been the intensity about the side you can feel in performance
00:19:24and they're doing the job yeah history sent has to go for a day 205 49
00:19:29that's how you'll play and i'll tell you what if he has a bit of luck you could still get to 250.

00:23:43delivery shy of 80 overs nothing for dale stain he limped off with that injury to his thigh 357 for
00:23:50and teeny four for 37 from sean pollock from seventeen overs and five balls there were seven
00:23:56maidens there as well one wicket for andre now and a couple for jack callis let's get a quick word
00:24:02with my studio guest dominic core let's start with the toss what do you think of ral dravis decision
00:24:06to bat first well it's obviously a bit of a gamble they've waited a long time bit of moisture in the
00:24:11pitch obviously the groundsman hasn't covered the wicket as well as he he can do it doesn't matter
00:24:14what they'd have used whether it was hair dryer what there's going to be moisture there bit of
00:24:18a gamble but in test match cricket you have to gamble sometimes it's going to do a little bit you
00:24:22hopefully ride that and i think india in the way have made a good fist of it they struggled a wee bit at
00:24:27the top order they found things tough going sorry ganguli a big test match for him back into the test fold
00:24:32how do you think he went i think he went very well under a lot of pressure they attacked him
00:24:36now went at him early on bounced him but i think the way that he plays i think he backed himself
00:24:41to get through it and play the ganguli innings really patient likes to play the shots a little
00:24:47bit premeditated that but in a way it's just what india needed how important was that final little
00:24:53partnership between him and brv seeing 44 off just what was it 35 balls very important and it's very
00:24:59frustrating as well because as a as a side that you think you're very close to getting india all out here
00:25:04that last partnership it's just frustrating and i'm sure graham smith will hopefully uh you know
00:25:09think that that's nothing because they'll obviously want to go past india uh but all in all i think
00:25:14that that partnership has set them up very well did south africa make the best of the new ball well i'm
00:25:19very surprised that sean pollock hasn't opened the innings there's a bit of moisture there uh yeah
00:25:24obviously there's a bit of seam movement there brand new cookbook ball with a little bit of swing with
00:25:27dale steam what you have got is pace and and entini uh but i just think that it just didn't get the
00:25:33ball in the right area you've got to make these batters uh uh play and also he's gone into the
00:25:38game with a little bit of an injury and then walked off with the same injury four for 39 for sean
00:25:43pollock once he did get a go he just did the simple things didn't he land the ball in the correct areas
00:25:47him and glenn mcgrath two peas in a pod i think it's just consistency and you just see this he
00:25:51consistently hits the right area he gets wicket to wicket he gets a ball in the right area he hits the
00:25:57scene he makes it very difficult uh and you know that's what you want want to see as a as a as a as
00:26:03a bowler and somebody who's trying to coach bowling is he's got the perfect action him and glenn mcgrath
00:26:08that's why they've played test cricket for so long now during the one day series we saw the south african
00:26:13bowlers bully the indian batsmen do you think that's the mentality that the south africans went into this
00:26:18innings with i think they definitely did you know we all know that india they haven't got very you know
00:26:23pacey wickets and i think we know that uh johannesburg the wondrous pitch it can get a
00:26:28little bit of bounce in it you can see there's a bit of moisture in there the cracks are developing
00:26:31but i think they thought bully india out here and they're going to lose this first test match
00:26:35a lot of runs really considering the conditions i think they'll be disappointed uh south africa will
00:26:39be disappointed south africa will be disappointed i think south africa would probably bowl first i think
00:26:44graham smith said that he'd have probably had a bowl and gambled and i think they didn't get it in
00:26:48the right area 32 extras as well in that bowling performance and it's a pitch that was up and down
00:26:52and seeming around you can't afford to give them runs can you no you can't give them especially in
00:26:56a test match even though you know it goes over five days he'd have been disappointed with that
00:27:01i think all in all it is said to it you know his plays at the end of that innings that look we haven't
00:27:05had a great fist here we need to put it right and hopefully when they come out second innings they'll
00:27:09get the ball in the right area okay don't we must leave it there for now we'll take a break and on
00:27:13the other side of which we'll show you the south african batting performance in their first innings it was
00:27:18very entertaining cricket let me say

00:29:36both the south african openers dismissed
00:29:39so come to a bit of pressure zahir khan has had a very very good tour again a loose shot from gibbs
00:29:45nicely taken by say wag i think it is he's happy gibbs very loose pressure i think got to him
00:29:53he's gone for zero south african huge trouble far for two
00:30:04again goes past the outside edge this is a good bowling by the indians
00:30:11he settled down nicely now not going for pace just looking to keep the ball in the right areas it's a
00:30:16good seam position it's coming out of his hand good seam position it looks like he's betting with the
00:30:22handle of his bet
00:30:26really struggling is as you remember mind you've got to give credit to the bollies
00:30:31position a little bit of movement away and applying the screws
00:30:36the indians are all over the shop in the field they've taken three wickets in the space of just
00:30:5610 minutes this is amla just a matter of time it was only a matter of time before he got a nickel
00:31:03nice neat catch by laxman but uh temperament maybe in question maybe not technique certainly in
00:31:11question and he's paid the penalty as hashim amla he's gone for a zero along with gibbs 5-4-3
00:31:18that is close that is close he took a good hard look daryl harper
00:31:36i want to see it again we called it we said they were looking for the in swing it was only a matter
00:31:41of nice and full daryl harper's not sure himself and i'll tell you what let's have a look at this
00:31:45one does it pitch on yes it does boy oh boy oh no jack gallus you lucky man and that's why you're lucky

00:32:01middle stump how lucky can you be far for four must be that's deadsville

00:32:29to be happy but jack gallus is going to make him pay no matter what that's beautifully struck
00:32:34but have a look at uh this one might have just got so he got a little bet on it so darryl harper
00:32:44apologies to darryl harper and apologies to jack gallus and he's going to make him pay that's a
00:32:50second boundary darryl harper you've got our apologies we thought it was dead and uh you got it right we got it
00:32:57wrong nicely played on the onside that will reach the boundary
00:33:09already in these uh little 10 minutes we've seen the jack callers he's looked glass apart
00:33:19edge and taken the breakthrough so quickly after lunch three turns on fire he's got three
00:33:26callus the big fish goes in south africa 21 for four that was a fantastic catch particularly when we
00:33:34consider third slip dived in front of second slip so he must have impeded his vision a little bit
00:33:40but laxman kept his eye on the ball showed good technique and this is a fine catch off the outside edge
00:33:46third slip coming in front of him blacksmith catching that low down and that is a very good
00:33:52piece of cricket by the indians 21 for four wow take that cracking stroke
00:34:04ends the over the sparkling boundary it's 27 for four
00:34:21khan gets the wicket the villiers goes south africa 33 for five
00:34:26not much abd villiers could do about this one it's a very good delivery just sort of short of a length
00:34:32bounce steeply just couldn't get over the top of it it looked like he tried to play it on the onside
00:34:41leading edge say we're taking his second catch of the innings and south africa now really in dire
00:34:47the innings and south africa now really in the middle of those straights 33 for five
00:34:55and that might be uh boundary number five two of those came from callus
00:35:02his good friend mark bouchers joined in
00:35:04in
00:35:18mark boucher playing away from his body well there's the answer from uh srisant i think
00:35:23that wicket has given him the most delight of all there's the reply if you want to make it count
00:35:28this is how to do it and he's made it work pretty good he's won this battle as he sent
00:35:34my word india right in this what an opportunity i've never won a test match
00:35:39in south africa are they on the road to achieving that 38 for six voucher goes
00:35:55good timer of the ball to try to the pollock family he's uh away
00:36:04oh my initial reaction was it's going down but uh he was quite a long way back in the crease and the
00:36:15umpire thought that's good enough for me pollock on his way gee whiz three sand that's his best
00:36:21ever in test cricket and the young man is delighted and so he should be well this
00:36:27having in batting lineup after this performance will have a lot more respect for him neil benson
00:36:33mark benson excuse me was quick with the decision walker agrees with him and it's gone from bad to
00:36:41worse now south africa seven down with only 45 on the board dangerous pollock goes for five
00:36:53and he's gonna play a few shots too i don't think that came entirely out the middle so he mightn't get
00:36:58the full result that he'll get a couple
