00:00Mr Trick.
00:01OK, well, when you get a dodgy back team wicket or wicket that's difficult to score runs,
00:04you need, I guess, one of your top order to stand up and be counted,
00:08and this occasion, VVS Laxman.
00:09Plays very well. Plays pace very well, times the ball very well.
00:13Two crucial partnerships, that one, 50 partnership with Ganguly,
00:18another one with Zahir Khan, but he times the ball well.
00:22And, you know, unlike an Indian player, he likes to pull and hug.
00:26Did he have his game plan right as well?
00:27Well, he seemed to me to be waiting very much for the ball to be in his area.
00:31He's obviously gone into this and he's been a lot of thought.
00:32I think they were in a better situation than South Africa,
00:35so he could give himself a bit more time.
00:37And I think he did wait for a little bit of width, a little bit of, obviously, length,
00:42whether it was a bit full or a bit short, and he capitalised.
00:44Now, there was a bit of fruit, shall we say, out in the middle,
00:47between Andre Nell and Sri Sreefans,
00:50two of the more, well, controversial players sometimes.
00:53We know all about Andre Nell and the way he likes to wind opposition up,
00:56but it looks like this young man is going down the same route.
00:59How would you deal with it?
01:01How would you commentate on that first, Ian?
01:03I just can't believe what I'm seeing on a cricket pitch, the dance.
01:06But, you know, I think all it needs is, you know, the manager and the captain
01:10just go up to him and say, look, we know you're aggressive,
01:13we know that you enjoy your games, but, you know, concentrate on your cricket.
01:17Don't let the opposition wind you up.
01:18I just wish somebody may have done that with me when I was younger.
01:20And hopefully with the likes of Chappell, with the likes of Dravind
01:24and all the senior players, take him to one side and say,
01:27you've got five wickets, just concentrate on your cricket.
01:29I was going to say, you enjoy a confrontation on the field.
01:32It helps get you fired up, but you can overstep that line.
01:34What would have worked with you?
01:35What do you think will work with Sri San?
01:37Is it a slap on the wrist from the match referee,
01:39or is it one of the senior players, a Sachin Tendulkar,
01:42just pulling you aside and saying, hey, mate, come on?
01:44Well, as a player, you don't want to get to that, you know,
01:46going to the match referee.
01:47You want it to stay before that.
01:50And so what you want is the captain, the manager, the senior players
01:53to come up to you, to have a word and say, look, you know,
01:55enjoy yourself, be aggressive, but obviously stick within the law,
01:59stick within, you know, going over that line,
02:02and you'll be successful.
02:03And I think he will be a very successful Indian Test Match bowler.
02:06He's certainly a very talented one.
02:07South Africa, 402 to win.
02:09What chances?
02:10I mean, the highest score chasing at the Wanderers is 296.
02:13On this pitch, no chance.
02:14I don't think there's going to be any chance,
02:15especially if they play like they did in the first innings,
02:18some of them look out of form,
02:20and in the India Bowl like they did then,
02:23then it's all over.
02:24OK, Dominic, we'll leave it there for now.
02:25We must take a break.
02:26On the other side of which we'll show you
02:27South Africa's second innings,
02:29402 to win.
02:31Always going to be tough.
02:32We love it, we love it, we love it, we love it.
02:49Mick,
02:49gone!
02:51A pair for Urshal Gibbs and Zaheer Khan,
02:55as he has done throughout this tour,
02:57has struck again,
02:59head down for Urshal Gibbs.
03:01Is it the end for him?
03:02Well, we'll have to just wait and see.
03:04Just angled nicely.
03:07Good delivery, but
03:08has to be said,
03:09it's a poor stroke.
03:10Loose drive outside off-stop.
03:12He was dismissed in a similar fashion
03:14in the first innings.
03:15This time,
03:15he was caught at first slip
03:17and trouble for South Africa
03:19right at the start.
03:27Oh, well played.
03:31Beautifully done.
03:34Good, positive stuff,
03:35this from Graeme Smith.
03:40That's well played.
03:42That's a long chase for Singh
03:45down to the deep mid-wicket boundary.
03:46Ball is at the loser.
03:49And Amla will get three.
03:52Good chase.
04:00Shot and four.
04:03That's beautiful use of the pace of the ball
04:05and the direction.
04:08Neatly played.
04:09It's a typical Hashem Amla shot.
04:1022 for one.
04:16Oh, he's gone.
04:19Caught at backward point.
04:21Wide delivery.
04:22Playing away from the body.
04:25He just couldn't resist it.
04:27Suag takes the catch
04:28and away goes Smith.
04:30It's 22 for two.
04:31Poor shot.
04:32Poor shot selection.
04:34He couldn't resist it,
04:35quite rightly so.
04:36What a catch that is.
04:38That's a brilliant catch.
04:39And the aeroplane takes off.
04:4722 for two.
04:53Wide of the crease
04:54and just wide.
04:56It's gone away for four,
04:58but he followed it,
04:59did Hashem Amla,
05:00and that was ball from wide of the crease.
05:01Good thinking.
05:02Good thinking.
05:02And it's followed up
05:07with a few words as well.
05:13Beautifully done.
05:14Oh, that is excellent bowling.
05:16Oops.
05:17Don't do that, young man.
05:18You've done enough
05:19by getting him out
05:19really close to the stumps.
05:22He's Andre now, isn't he?
05:24In drag.
05:27Beautifully bowled, though.
05:28Really close to the stumps.
05:29Got his man.
05:30Excellent.
05:31Excellent.
05:32And yet again,
05:33the length been so good.
05:35And I'm not quite behind it.
05:38He's got to be careful here,
05:39Sri San.
05:40There's no doubt
05:41the match referee
05:41may just be
05:42sitting up more upright
05:44at the moment.
05:45Amla gone for 17.
05:4634 now for three.
05:55Good shot.
05:58That will reach the boundary.
05:59Good balance when he played it.
06:03Callis didn't try
06:04and hit it too hard.
06:15Lovely shot.
06:16No need to run for that.
06:17He just picked it away
06:19on the onside.
06:19And he's straying in line.
06:27And he goes again
06:28off the back foot.
06:29The timing is explicit
06:31and consecutive boundaries
06:33for Jack Callis.
06:34Oh, great shot.
06:40Great shot.
06:42Lovely to watch Callis
06:43that square cut
06:44race to the boundary.
06:53That's a good shot.
06:54But it's good cricket.
06:55You can see the thought process
06:57there from Kumle.
06:57He was looking to set him up.
06:5876 for three.
07:05That's a good shot.
07:07Got on top of the bounds
07:08and got the placement right.
07:13That brings up
07:14the 50-run partnership
07:15for the South Africans.
07:17Good effort.
07:22It's been taken.
07:23And what a wicked year
07:26for India.
07:28Full marks to Sri San.
07:31He threw the bait at Callis
07:32who couldn't resist.
07:34And South Africa
07:35have lost their best player.
07:38You've got to give credit.
07:39Yeah, this is a very good bowling.
07:41It's a perfect bowling.
07:42You don't know
07:42if a Nick Callis off like this.
07:44It was there to be driven
07:45but it was the lateness
07:46of the swing.
07:47He's had such a good position
07:49with the ball
07:49the release out the end.
07:51He's given it
07:52every opportunity
07:53to swing
07:53or do something
07:54off the pitch.
07:55Full marks to Sri San.
07:57Deserve that wicked.
07:58Callis sadly has to go.
08:00Serve again.
08:01All sorts of trouble now.
08:0284 for four.
08:07Oh, it's gone through.
08:09Two wag.
08:10And down to the boundary
08:11for four.
08:13There were shouts of catch.
08:17It was in the air.
08:19May have just dropped
08:20short of stay wag.
08:20It was in the air
08:23for quite some time.
08:25Like a slice drive
08:26and just short.
08:32In the air.
08:34And...
08:35Oh, he's dropped it.
08:40Very, very difficult chance.
08:41Oh, he's got it away.
08:49Good shot.
08:51He's been playing them
08:52through the onside
08:53or to the onside field
08:54and then the straight drive.
08:56Nicely hit by Ashil Prince.
08:58Brings the 100 up
08:59for South Africa.
09:00Smashed away.
09:08No trouble at all.
09:09Bounce going out of the track
09:10and it just set up nicely.
09:12Maybe he doesn't miss those.
09:20Shot.
09:22Very, very good shot.
09:23114 for four.
09:36Oh, this is going to be quick.
09:38That's got to be very quick.
09:40There's going to be a call
09:41for the replay.
09:43The Indians are absolutely convinced
09:45that was a suicidal one
09:46from AB.
09:47Eyes well out.
09:52AB de Villiers
09:53just when they needed him
09:55to stay in
09:56has found himself
09:56on the way
09:57back to the pavilion.
09:59Very, very disappointing.
10:01Played pretty well
10:02but then ran himself out.
10:04120 for five.
10:08That is the end
10:10of Prince, is it?
10:12No, it is not.
10:14Huge appeal from India.
10:16Not from
10:16Daryl Harper.
10:17Prince is unmoved.
10:19A beautiful delivery.
10:22And it is the end
10:23of the over
10:24at 131 for five.
10:30There was definitely
10:31a noise.
10:31India seemed convinced.
10:33They can't believe it.
10:37It was a noise.
10:39It wasn't bad on Pat.
10:40It wasn't a bad
10:41in the ground.
10:42Oh, that's
10:47slapped away
10:48to the onside.
10:51It was taken
10:52from outside
10:53the off stump
10:54and hit
10:55between the bowler
10:56and mid on.
10:56You don't often
10:57see that happening.
11:05Gets it.
11:06It's a good half-century
11:09here for Ashfield Prince.
11:12Had to look hard for it.
11:15145 for five.
11:24That's good shot.
11:26Stood up tall
11:27and punched it
11:27through the offside
11:28and into the boundary.
11:33Short and wide.
11:34Ziya Khan
11:35is definitely tired.
11:42Oh, good delivery.
11:43Late adjustment.
11:44He'll get a boundary for it.
11:45It's again late movement
11:50for Sri Sante.
11:56A short delivery.
11:57Got into position
11:58quickly, Baucha.
12:01It reaches the boundary
12:02quickly.
12:04Looked as if
12:05Baucha was expecting it.
12:12Oh, what's happened here?
12:14They go up again.
12:16It's another confident appeal.
12:20Baucha shakes his head.
12:22Just get the feeling
12:23this time
12:23the Empire
12:24might just have got it right.
12:27I hope for his sake he has.
12:30It's a very confident appeal.
12:34It's good delivery this time.
12:40I'm not sure.
12:41I'm not sure either.
12:43Could it be two in a row?
12:44Could be
12:44because if there's a sound
12:45there,
12:46it has to be off the bat.
12:47It's not taken anything
12:48else on the way.
12:51All go up.
12:57If it touched anything,
12:59it would have been
12:59the outside edge of the bat.
13:00that's up in the air.
13:01That's up in the air.
13:09A chance here.
13:12Oh, just falling short of the man
13:14at the fine leg.
13:15This is an eventful last over.
13:20Boundary,
13:20a confident appeal turned down.
13:23Bouncer getting the top edge.
13:24That's close.
13:40He's gone.
13:41Beautiful delivery from Zaheer Khan.
13:44Good shape and Boucher caught in front of his stumps
13:48and India get the breakthrough.
13:51Easy decision.
13:52Really got it to come back nicely, Zaheer Khan.
13:55He got himself in an awkward position.
13:57Mark Boucher.
13:57You see the head and the foot.
13:59Nowhere in line.
13:59Falling over.
14:00He was expecting it to go the other way.
14:02Banging.
14:02It would hit the stumps halfway up.
14:04And South Africa lose a wicket
14:06with just one run added this morning.
14:09The feisty character of Mark Boucher
14:11has to make his way back to the pavilion.
14:14Didn't add to his 23.
14:16164 for six.
14:18He needs the same sort of delivery again.
14:23That'll surprise Sean Pollock tailing in.
14:27It was almost there.
14:29But he gets some bat on it.
14:31And he'll find the boundary as well.
14:39Nicely timed.
14:43There's the flick of the wrist
14:44and the ball will reach the boundary.
14:48It's 172 for six.
14:58That's in the air.
14:59And will clear the boundary comfortably.
15:04So he's going for it Pollock.
15:06Already two boundaries and a six.
15:13That's a good shot.
15:15Didn't quite time it.
15:16And he'll still get a couple of runs.
15:20And you can see the intent is there.
15:22He's looking to be positive.
15:32Oh, that's sweet.
15:36Racist to the boundary.
15:37Barry Richards talked about the timing.
15:42Have a look at this.
15:43This is exquisite.
15:46Reminiscent of another Pollock on Graham.
15:49That's straight off the middle.
15:50Oh, beautiful shot.
15:52And he'll have four there.
16:05He's running it between second slip and gully.
16:12That's a beautiful shot.
16:19No need to run for that.
16:22Into the pads and Pollock.
16:25Beautiful striker.
16:26The ball.
16:27Oh, shot.
16:34That's a fine shot.
16:36And that can also happen when you do get it quicker.
16:39Just rushes onto the back and clipped away for four.
16:42Take that.
16:49Two exquisite shots.
16:51One and on driver now.
16:52Crest through the covers off the back foot.
16:55Pollock moves on to 39.
16:56And then he's going to win.
17:04Bold him.
17:05Well called Alan Donald.
17:07Sean Pollock just going for one shot too many.
17:10And you wonder why.
17:11He hits the ball so beautifully straight.
17:14Why does he have to go across the line?
17:16He's done an A-B.
17:17And it's cost him his wicket.
17:18And Anil Kumble has done the job just before the new ball.
17:21Congratulations all around from the Indians.
17:23They know how important that is.
17:26And just a little bit of brain fade from Sean Pollock.
17:30Well, as experienced as he is.
17:33Well, I suppose you'll have to say that you live by the sword and you die by it.
17:37But that's the way he was always going to play.
17:41He's gone for 40.
17:42A quick one.
17:432.31 for seven.
17:49That's a good shot.
17:51He left the execution until very late.
17:55He's almost past his bat.
17:57And that provided a good timing.
18:00Yes, Jews.
18:01The pace on this occasion.
18:02And the bounce just didn't really hit it that hard.
18:05Or tried to hit it hard.
18:06Just got on top of the bounce and guided it.
18:10Past the backward point.
18:11India, almost home to what will be their first ever win, test win in South Africa.
18:30Two on the trot.
18:31Maybe he heard you.
18:32Ali's going to play a hussy type knock.
18:34Just go for it.
18:35That'll be four.
18:47Nicely played by Andre now.
18:48That's a beautifully balled.
18:57He set him up so well there, Anil Kumli.
19:00A couple of flighted deliveries.
19:01Then the quicker one.
19:02And before Andre now's bat could come down, the ball had thudded into the pads.
19:10Seeing this Kumli do this throughout his career.
19:13Set you up.
19:14And then it's the quicker one.
19:16Needs to chat to somebody in the side.
19:17They need to remind him about it.
19:19Very similar to the dismissal of Makai and Tinie in the first innings.
19:22Quicker one sliding on that occasion.
19:24Tinie was bold.
19:25Yep, it's LBW.
19:27So, sadly, entertainment was not going to be.
19:31Nell has to go.
19:32Didn't require the new ball.
19:35South Africa, 245.48.
19:43That's edge.
19:44It's over second slip and into the boundary.
19:47He went at it hard.
19:50Asheville Prince.
19:51He'll be looking now to try and get to his 100.
19:55Oh, that's a lovely shot.
20:01Didn't bounce as much as he expected, but he adjusted so well.
20:05Kept his eyes on the ball.
20:08Rolled his wrist.
20:09Consecutive boundaries here for Prince.
20:14Lovely shot.
20:16That's three in a row for Prince.
20:20He's braced through the 80s.
20:22He's moved on to 94 now with that shot.
20:25He's bowled in.
20:30He's played all over it.
20:33He cannot believe it.
20:37Disappointment all round because he played really well and deserved 100.
20:42Unfortunately, he has to depart for 97.
20:48Sad for Prince.
20:49Sad for South Africa.
20:51Probably the occasion, the moment.
20:52Been a bit too big for him.
20:54Looking to take on Kumbhle by coming down the track.
20:59Playing around it all over it.
21:00But they'll rise to congratulating.
21:04One bright point, sadly, in terms of 100 to South Africa.
21:08It's not to be well played 97 by a short prince.
21:132.63 now for nine.
21:234 for Makai and Tini.
21:26Full length.
21:27No one in the covers.
21:29Inviting the drive.
21:30And Tini accepting the invitation.
21:32It's in the air.
21:39Virinda Sirwag takes the catch that makes history for India.
21:43Their first win in test cricket in South Africa.
21:48Absolute delight and richly deserved for India.
21:52They've produced a marvellous effort throughout this test match.
21:56They've dominated it.
21:58And this is how it's ended.
22:00Wonderful performance by India.
22:02They came into this test match very determined to reverse the results of the one-day series.
22:06They did so.
22:07They were focused.
22:08They were well prepared.
22:09They took South Africa on.
22:11Under South Africa's conditions, it suits them generally at the Wanderers.
22:15A pitch that suited the faster bowlers.
22:17Rahul Dravid, quite rightly, delighted.
22:19And the series now is well and truly alive.
22:26So, South Africa set a target of 402 to win.
22:29Bowled out for 278 from 86 overs and five balls.
22:34Ashwell Prince, didn't he play well?
22:36What a gutsy performance.
22:37Falling short of his century.
22:39Bowled by Anil Kumble for 97 from 223 balls.
22:44Another good bowling performance from the Indians.
22:463 for 79 for Zaya Khan.
22:473 wickets for Srisanth for 59 runs.
22:51And 3 for Anil Kumble from his 20 overs.
22:54So, in summary, at the end of the first test match, India winning by 123 runs.
22:58They lead the series 1-0.
23:00Let's find out who the man of the match was.
23:02Here's Kasnadu.
23:03Before we have a word with both captains, it's also a special test match for a man who has served South African cricket over the years with such great distinction.
23:11I'm talking about our star all-rounder, Sean Pollock, who has finally reached 400 test wickets, joining an elite club of just 10 bowlers.
23:19Please put your hands together for Sean Pollock.
23:21Congratulations to Sean Pollock, also getting 7 for 72 in this test match.
23:34First up, a word from the South African captain.
23:36Please put your hands together for Graham Smith.
23:42Graham, I'm sure mightily disappointing having come into this test series with the momentum from the one-day series.
23:47What went wrong?
23:49Yeah, look, Kas, I think all credit to India.
23:51I think they performed a lot better than us throughout the three days.
23:54They were a lot more precise.
23:55And I think for us, it's just important that we take our pain.
23:58We're going to get a lot of criticism.
23:59And we take that, and we've got to bounce back in Durban.
24:02The bowlers didn't get it up right up front.
24:04And I think a lot of the experts are saying maybe a bit too much of one-day cricket, not enough four-day cricket.
24:09Do you go with that?
24:10Well, I'm sure there will be a lot of things said in the next few days.
24:13But I think the important thing for us is just to focus on the next game.
24:16Take our lessons from this game.
24:18And I think everyone can see that we weren't at our best in this game.
24:20And it's important that we prepare well going into Durban and make sure that we bounce back there.
24:25And there's no doubt in my mind that we have the potential to do that.
24:28You had an injury to Dale, Stan.
24:29How's he doing?
24:30Will he be fit for Durban?
24:32Well, obviously, that's what we're going to have to wait and see.
24:34He's obviously on the physio bed quite a lot at the moment and getting his treatment.
24:38So we'll see how I monitor things, how they go into Durban.
24:40But as I say, hopefully he is.
24:42He's a big cog and losing him in the second innings obviously cost us and also in the first.
24:47Best of luck in Durban.
24:48Thanks, Cass.
24:49South Africa's captain, Graham Smith.
24:50Well, India came into this match with so much pressure.
24:57Many people didn't give them a chance to win this test match.
25:00But they picked up a famous win here at the Wanderers.
25:02Please put your hands together for the winning captain, Rahul Dravid.
25:12Rahul, a special moment for you.
25:14You said coming into this match, a motivating factor having not won in South Africa.
25:17The team really backed you up.
25:19Really, I think I'm really proud of the team that I led.
25:22You know, the whole squad, the Levin and the guys who were not even playing in the side.
25:25I think everyone really proud of the way they performed over the last three and a half days.
25:30And really, they were credit to ourselves and credit to the nation today.
25:34Sri Sante was incredible.
25:36Getting you into the match, bowling South Africa out for 84.
25:40Such a young guy and so much a promise.
25:42Yeah, just in a sixth test match and incredible ability and showed what disciplines in the right areas can do.
25:48A fantastic effort.
25:48Really happy for him.
25:49And I think he truly deserved all the success that he got in this game because he really worked hard for it.
25:54I think it was a great team effort as well.
25:55You know, I'd like to really put my hands together for all the boys in my team for the way they fought right through this test match.
26:01You've won this first test match.
26:02A couple of opportunities in a couple of years ago.
26:05India have lost their way.
26:07I'm sure you don't want complacency to set in going into the second match.
26:10Absolutely not.
26:11But we know that South Africa is a very good side.
26:13I mean, they've built a strong fortress around themselves, especially at home.
26:18And, you know, they're going to come back very hard at us.
26:20And we know that.
26:22But we're going to enjoy this win.
26:23I think we deserve to enjoy it.
26:24And we nearly need to have a good time and enjoy our successes.
26:26And then get ready for the next one.
26:28And we know that there's a lot of cricket to be played in this series.
26:30The experts have lauded your captaincy.
26:33Personally, what a great moment for you as captain.
26:34Well, I think I'm just proud of the team.
26:36I think, you know, when your team backs you up with performances, it reflects well on you.
26:40I think it's really all about the team.
26:42And, I mean, you know, you can only do so much.
26:44It's really about the guys in the team putting their hands together and doing the job for you.
26:47And I think full credit to them.
26:49Enjoy the celebration today.
26:50And I'm sure you'll agree that one man really stood out in this test match.
27:05In only his sixth test match, he's picked up eight for 99.
27:09A castle man of the match is Sri Sri Sang.
27:11Sri, congratulations.
27:25You're made in five wicket hall in only your sixth test match.
27:28Only the second player from Kerala to play for India.
27:31You must be so proud.
27:32I am.
27:33I am.
27:33I'm really happy.
27:34The hard work is really paying.
27:35And I really thank the full team management and especially Amarov Pace Foundation where I
27:39really learned the basics and it was really nice to really perform here and in South Africa.
27:45Well, the commentators were talking about how amazing you were.
27:47Prominency in position, line in length, everything went your way.
27:50How much did you work on that?
27:52It is.
27:52I've been working.
27:53I've been in Amarov Pace Academy since almost four to five years.
27:56And even in the team, when I was not getting it right, I was very lucky to meet Agunga.
28:00We had lots of legends, especially Donald and Wasim Ghai and everyone.
28:03So I think it really helped me.
28:05And if I can just keep the basics right, I think I can still.
28:10You mentioned the legends.
28:11I was chatting to Ravi Shastri.
28:13He says he cannot remember an Indian bowler bowling so well.
28:16Great praise from the legends.
28:17I mean, it's an honor.
28:18I mean, especially from him.
28:19I think it's all God's grace and I just want to keep working hard.
28:23We saw a glimpse of your colorful personality here at The Wonders.
28:26I believe you're also a break dancer.
28:28An item number in the change room a bit later on?
28:30Yes, obviously.
28:32I mean, I did a couple of steps here after winning as well.
28:33So I think it's, I love dancing and I enjoy everything I do.
28:37Congratulations.
28:37All the best.
28:38Thanks a lot.
28:38The castle man of the match is India's Sri Srisanth.
28:44Well, he thoroughly deserved that man of the match award, Sri Srisanth.
28:47Figures of eight for 99 in the game.
28:49And that victory by India by 123 runs means they're 1-0 up in this three-test match series.
28:55The sides now go to Durban for the Boxing Day test and then down to Cape Town for the third test,
29:01which starts on January the 2nd.
29:04Let's get a quick word with Dominic.
29:05He thoroughly deserved that, didn't he?
29:06Sri Srisanth, he was outstanding.
29:07He got the ball in the right area from day one, really.
29:10He got it on the length.
29:13He got the ball to move off the cracks.
29:14And when he didn't get the ball to move off the cracks, he swung the ball.
29:17So, to me, he deserved it and got the major players out as well.
29:21Yeah, Graeme Smith a bit unfortunate here chasing it.
29:23A good catch for a friend to say well.
29:25But consistently, you've been impressed with his wrist position and the way he's delivering the seam down the pitch.
29:29Yeah, he actually delivers it very, very well.
29:32He offers it up.
29:33So, if the ball is going to swing like that or just seam, you know, he gets the edge of the bat.
29:37So, he's getting major players out.
29:39He's also aggressive.
29:40You'll see here with the seam, probably not as much because it's an older ball.
29:43But he gets it in the right area.
29:44It's just top of off.
29:45Every coach you'll say, every bowling coach, when you bowl the ball, look to hit top of off.
29:50He gets the good players out.
29:51There's Smith and Callis.
29:52Another good catch as well by Ganguly at third slip there.
29:55But to get Callis out, if they were going to stand any chance of winning the game,
29:58somebody like Jack Callis had to go on and get a big score.
30:01So, you know, you want your major bowler, your strike bowler to get the wickets and he did do that.
30:06Well, let's look at South Africa.
30:07What would disappoint South Africa most about this performance in this test match?
30:11I don't think they were as disciplined as you know a South African side can be.
30:14They went into the game a little bit undercooked.
30:17So, the senior players, most of the side had a game off, time off.
30:22And India looked a little bit more on board and on the ball.
30:27But South Africa really just flattered to deceive.
30:30You know, they didn't get the ball in the right area.
30:32Their batting looked, you know, lacklustre.
30:34And all in all, India deserved the win.
30:36One bright spot for South Africa in their second innings was the performance of Ashwell Prince.
30:4097 fell tantalising short of his fifth test match 100.
30:44But he showed a good degree of character and guts in this innings.
30:47Yeah, he played very well.
30:48Very patient.
30:49Built the innings quite nicely.
30:51Got some decent deliveries and rode them.
30:54Played and missed.
30:55Was probably fortunate not to be given out, caught behind off to his son.
30:58And in a way, probably disappointing for himself that he didn't eventually go on and get his 100.
31:03And he obviously was bowled by Cumblay.
31:05But if there's one shining light in their batting performance, that would be it.
31:10One shining light in their batting performance test match-wise in 2006.
31:14He scored the most runs for them.
31:15He's gone past Callis, which is a remarkable achievement.
31:18Yeah, it shows that he's on top of his game at the moment.
31:20You can see with all the other batsmen, the likes of Callis, obviously Gibbs, and the captain, Graeme Smith, look like they're struggling.
31:27Like they're trying to force the ball to the boundary.
31:29But all in all, I've just been disappointed with the way that the South Africans just believe they could blow India away.
31:34Like they did in the one-dayers.
31:36And I think they've come unfounded.
31:39What about India, though?
31:40Remarkable turnaround events from what we saw in the one-day series.
31:43They've really come to the party in the test matches.
31:45Yeah, and you could say perhaps Greg Chappell has really got them together after a 4-0 loss.
31:51It's very difficult to come back and go into a test series.
31:53And I think him, Dravid, with the likes of Ganguly and Laxman coming back in, some senior players,
31:58and also the emergence of a young bowler named Sri Sri Santh.
32:01Now, let's kick things forward to the second test in Durban.
32:04South Africa have no game.
32:06No players can go and play any of their domestic cricket.
32:08They've got to put it all right in the nets.
32:10What are the areas of concern ahead of Durban for them?
32:13They've got to work hard.
32:14They've got to make sure that the batters can get them into the game.
32:17You can see with their bowling, although at the beginning you looked at obviously the first innings,
32:21Antini and Steyn didn't get it in the right area, similar to Nell and Steyn.
32:25So they have to get that right, open with Pollock.
32:27But I think that top order have to start firing.
32:30And if that means dropping one of them, a Gibbs, or bringing in somebody else, they have to do that.
32:35But work hard in the nets and try and respect the Indians a little bit more than they did do.
32:40Humid conditions we expect in Durban.
32:43Will that affect the balance of the side that Indian may pick?
32:45I don't think it will affect them.
32:47It will just see exactly what the pitch is like.
32:49Is it going to spin or is it just going to be another seamer-friendly condition?
32:53So we'll see whether the ball swings.
32:55If it does, they'll keep probably a similar team.
32:57OK, Dominic, great to see you.
32:59Thanks very much indeed.
33:00We'll see you again soon.
33:01We must go.
33:02Before we do, a quick reminder of where you can see that next Test match in the series.
33:07It is coming up on Boxing Day.
