Dominic Scurr reflects on Newcastle United's 1-1 draw at Brighton on Sunday afternoon.
Transcript
00:00Here outside the Amex Stadium where Newcastle United have drawn 1-1 with Brighton and Hove Albion this afternoon.
00:07I'm outside because I was inside before trying to record a video, got kicked out.
00:12So that's how things work.
00:15But ultimately today, a good point for Newcastle United.
00:19It certainly felt that way.
00:20I mean, games against Brighton this season have had a similar feel where Newcastle have been in the game.
00:26They've been okay without really being particularly potent in attack.
00:30And then Brighton have almost sucker punched them every time.
00:33Whereas today it looked like it was going to be the same old story.
00:36Yankouba meant it, giving Brighton the lead.
00:39That man again in the first half.
00:42Soft goal from Newcastle's perspective.
00:44Decent finish.
00:45Not really sure what this celebration was all about.
00:47Gesture into the Newcastle fans.
00:49But yeah, Brighton took the lead.
00:51Newcastle possibly didn't deserve to be behind but weren't doing enough in the final third to justify being in front or being level in the game itself.
01:02But Newcastle made changes in the second half.
01:05Anthony Gordon came on, thought he'd won a penalty with one of his first touches of the ball.
01:11Tariq Lampardy taking him down but was on the edge of the box.
01:15And we'll get on to the penalty thing because ultimately it was a game of not too many chances but a lot of penalty drama, VAR drama in the game.
01:25And it all started with that initial Anthony Gordon penalty awarded by Craig Poulsen, the referee.
01:32Then VAR looks at it, realises outside the box so it's a free kick to Newcastle.
01:37And then Newcastle have a second penalty awarded by Craig Poulsen.
01:43Joe Willock goes down.
01:44John Paul Vanheck, alleged foul but VAR looks at it.
01:49Willock booked for simulation.
01:52So yeah, a second penalty turned down.
01:54And then it was third time lucky for Newcastle United.
01:58Fabian shares free kick, hits off the Brighton wall, hits off player's hand.
02:04And finally Newcastle awarded a penalty and Alexander Isak steps up, converts his 27th goal of the season.
02:13And now an interesting stat for Alexander Isak is he scored against every Premier League side, current Premier League side I should say, in the Premier League.
02:22For Newcastle of course.
02:24So yeah, an interesting stat.
02:2527 goals for the season, 23 in the Premier League.
02:28Good going from him.
02:30And yeah, I think a point is a decent result for Newcastle.
02:34It's as good as it gets for Newcastle and the Premier League at the Amex Stadium.
02:37So you certainly take it.
02:39It keeps the momentum, keeps them fourth in the Premier League table heading into that game against Chelsea.
02:45Though it's very, very tight now.
02:47It's just three points separating them in fourth.
02:49Aston Villa in seventh following the weekend's results.
02:53And it's going to be a really big game at St James' Park against Chelsea next Sunday.
02:57So yeah, they've just beaten Liverpool 3-1.
03:02So it takes Newcastle and Chelsea level on goal difference.
03:04Newcastle only ahead of them on goals scored.
03:07So yeah, it was an eventful game today in terms of the officiate and the decisions.
03:12Plenty of drama.
03:13But the game itself in terms of actual chances and quality wasn't always there.
03:19I thought Newcastle will take the point.
03:23Will Eddie House seem satisfied after the game?
03:25And they'll look ahead to what is the big game, potential Champions League decider really,
03:32with three games left to go at St James' Park against Chelsea next Sunday.
03:36And we'll be covering all the fallout from today's game,
03:39as well as all the build-up to the match against Chelsea at St James' Park over on the Shields Gazette.
