00:00I grew up in a trailer park, put myself through med school by posing in my underwear.
00:04I walk into the O.R. and everyone hopes I'm the nurse.
00:06The nurses are overworked and unhappy.
00:08Sorry, we're short-staffed.
00:10Unhappy nurses lead to...
00:12I don't even want to think about it.
00:13We go on strike in ten days.
00:18In surgery, there is a red line on the floor
00:21that marks the point where the hospital goes from being accessible
00:25to being off limits to all but a special few.
00:28Crossing the line unauthorized is not tolerated.
00:32Fair power! Fair power! Fair power! Fair power! Fair power! Fair power! Fair power!
00:43I can't. I can't. I can't cross the picket line. I can't.
00:46Don't look at either, George, but what choice do we have?
00:48Okay, you took an oath to heal. You're a healer.
00:51Dad's a truck driver. Mom's a teacher.
00:52The evening news shows me crossing the picket line.
00:55They'll outlive me just to pee on my grave.
00:57In general, lines are there for a reason.
01:00Has there been any blood yet?
01:01I've heard they brought a scab nurses.
01:03For safety. For security. For clarity.
01:08I think the nurses know that we are on their side.
01:11Oh, cross the line!
01:12Something?
01:13Well, we're doctors. We have sick patients inside.
01:15And we have sweet treats.
01:17Okay. Then you go first.
01:20Go, cross the line!
01:22Yeah, I'm doing my job!
01:27Doing my job!
01:29Uh-huh!
01:30They threw food at her!
01:35That is just wrong!
01:37It's fine.
01:38Come on. You're doing it.
01:39Wage is better.
01:40Rachel!
01:41Save your hands, Steve!
01:42Yeah! Enjoy your syphilis, Olivia!
01:43George, are you coming?
01:48No, I'm good here.
01:50If you choose to cross the line, you pretty much do so at your own risk.
01:54morning morning marina i wish you today she's great she really lights up when dr weber visits
02:03and i did not back down not in my or not in front of those jock ortho idiots that was the last time
02:09windsor called you little lady not even by your back one day i'm gonna be chief of surgery the
02:14first woman chief you watch i don't doubt it so why is it don't doubt it for a minute that the
02:22bigger the line the greater the temptation to cross it and i can't say this enough charts are
02:31organized by room number i know you're temp nurses but there's no excuse for sloppiness
02:38stop being a nurse doctors doctors who don't know how to pitch in right this place is going to help
02:44we need the real nurses we need an additional 40 nurses to relieve the overtime that they're
02:49striking about that's two million dollars a year we don't have have you checked under the couch i
02:53always find spare change under the cushions oh okay i'm silencing myself

06:45help i need a nurse in here please her pressure's falling she stopped breathing whoa
06:49is she dying are you a nurse um i'm like a nursing student i need to intubate get me a seven and a
06:54half tube they're out in the hall
07:00not that one the one that's a seven five
07:02i'm in awesome
07:20is that too much it's a lot of extra amniotic fluid cheyenne but your baby looks strong does that mean
07:26we can go i mean i appreciate you seeing us i really do but this is a long drive for us
07:30and i can't afford to miss another shift unfortunately miss wood the mass on the baby's neck is what's
07:36causing the buildup of fluid it's also obstructing her airway and the spine mom it's all right let's
07:42listen we're gonna do a procedure called an exit surgery basically we do a c-section and only half
07:48deliver the baby half deliver that's right we pull the head and the arms out but we don't cut the
07:52umbilical cord why the tumor won't let air get to the baby's lungs so we need the umbilical cord
07:58to keep her alive during the operation it's kind of cool if you think about it you'll be like
08:02your baby's life support machine and then after the surgery if all goes well we cut the umbilical
08:07cord and you'll be the mother of a healthy baby girl how's that sound it sounds expensive well your
08:14doctor at the clinic is a former student of mine so it's covered i'm gonna go ahead and take this
08:21up to the lab the hospital gets a write-off for the surgery and makes dr shepard look good so so
08:30it's not charity it's not charity what time's your shift six to six graveyard in chihalas yeah it's

09:19it doesn't cross the line you'll get ib antibiotics and if it does cross the line well it would mean
09:23the infection's aggressive we'd have to do a muscle biopsy you have to take out a piece of my muscle
09:28mm-hmm well we're supposed to run a 10k tomorrow oh on this leg i got it can you tell us when you

10:12okay though right oh yeah yeah it's probably just a simple skin infection oh no it's not look
10:22hey your dog's fine he's your dog now i miss him he misses you too just come visit the dog i mean
10:34i'll walk away now so um i'm looking for a neurosurgeon to consult on a fetal spinal tumor you know

10:55support they were spurn point what we need a favor ava jenkins and pete room 41 14 it's almost time to
11:02change your dressing and it's scary for her but if you sing the alphabet or the wheels on the bus
11:07song she can handle mr obliant from 24 12 she'll have a major panic attack if they don't check on
11:12her at least once now and there's this guy 29.4 wait you want me to cross the picket line yeah yeah
11:20why because there are our patients too george we can't anyone care to probe the wound i do
11:29i'd really like to try your method of healing with love i'd like the way you think alex you do
11:35the honors christina looks like someone needs to learn how to share okay not plate let's go ahead
11:41and slide it in whoa no resistance let me see dr harris let me see yes no healthy muscle gives way
11:49that easily oh my god oh this poor girl okay everyone we're locking down the or all non-essential
11:54personnel must leave now is that pathology is necrotizing fasciitis the flesh-eating bacteria
12:01in the flesh oh good somebody's in here how's she doing you intubated her yeah you intubated
12:10her i had to she was struggling to breathe her sats were in the 80s she was in a room all alone
12:15what one of the temp nurses found the paperwork from her chart on the second floor and you put a
12:20tube in grace she put a tube in grace she put a tube in grace mrs bickham was diagnosed with end
12:28stage copd she's on hospice end of life care the nr do not resuscitate you little chinook you were
12:37supposed to let her die
12:42no machine she's saying she did i remember because her daughter alice was there with her girlfriend
12:48she's a lesbian with the daughter nice girls stop with the rambling agnes make your point i'm sorry
12:57who are you exactly mrs bickham's sisters oh no no her sister rose died in 83 may she rest in peace
13:06influenza or croup only babies die of crude rose died with a cold in her chest pneumonia right pneumonia
13:14and then there was her other sister harry may she rest in peace they cremated her gracie wanted
13:20to die she made us all promise this really is something that i need to speak with her husband
13:26about many never talked much when he was alive good luck getting a word now when he's dead may he rest
13:32in peace but grace said she just saw him because she was trying to cross over she almost died twice in the
13:40last month said she saw him each time you ask me that's a little me sugar now it's not me sugar now
13:47he was waiting for her in the light which thanks to you she can't reach now
13:57oh mali i need you to round around 21. excuse me i'm i'm here but i'm not here you won't be anywhere in
14:03about 30 seconds sir all due respect no offense intended uh but i won't cross the picket line
14:11and yet somehow you're standing in front of me well yeah because some of the nurses want me to check
14:14on their patients and so i am but then i'm going right back out there to join them you're a doctor
14:18yes sir but i'm also a union man all due respect there's no offense
14:24that's what i'm concerned fine sir well i have you here i'm supposed to tell you that uh mrs o'brien
14:33in 24 12 is allergic to chocolate but she pulls the allergy sticker off her chart every chance she
14:38gets wonderful and uh that mister you're supposed to watch mr roberts in 2119 take and swallow his
14:43diuretics apparently he likes to hoard them under his mattress is that it
14:4640 to 50 hours of mandatory overtime is extremely yes sir i'm very sorry it's no offense intended
14:56what wait flesh eating i mean this is some kind of joke right she put you up to this no it's not
15:01a joke we have to amputate the leg christina we're on her honeymoon i'm sorry wait i know this is scary
15:08but amputation is not the only option it's the only saying excuse me if we don't get this infection
15:12under control immediately she is going to die but there's another option well we can try to save
15:18the leg by cutting out the infection it won't be pretty but we might be able to keep it functional
15:22gold star for dr karif i need to see her there's no time by the time we take her out of anesthesia
15:27and put her back under you need to make a decision now i mean she runs marathons this is our adventure
15:34honeymoon it's i mean it's who she is okay then we'll do everything we can to save the leg
15:42do you seriously think this is a good idea seriously i think this is a way cooler surgery
15:53shyad the prognosis is very good so what we want to try to do is go in and get as much of the tumor
15:59out as possible during your surgery so my baby will be fine yes you may be able to take your baby
16:04home by the end of the week that soon absolutely she'll be all yours oh okay okay now if you or your
16:12mother have any questions dr stevens will page me all right see you later
16:19oh shakespeare i was reading it to my baby it's really homework for english
16:24was the baby wasn't due for another three more weeks and now i guess no more school it's weird
16:36it's like when you're in school
16:39you hate it until you can't go anymore
16:43have you made any plants plants bought a crib called about child care looked into assistance
16:50not yet you're gonna live with your mom i'm supposed to be saving money to get my own trailer home
16:59i don't know i guess i just thought i'd have more time
17:02nine months goes by fast yeah yeah it does
17:08so sydney have you seen a lot of necrotizing fasciitis no have you
17:28if the infection moves to her bloodstream she'll die she wakes up without her legs she might wish
17:31she had yeah dr karev is right she's young she's healthy she's a newlywed and your treatment plan is
17:36based on cuteness if she were an 80 year old man you'd amputate in a heartbeat she's not 80. where's
17:42your compassion my my compassion trying to save a patient from death is pretty compassionate i must
17:48say i'm disappointed in you why can't you be more like alex excuse me yeah this guy he's compassionate
17:55he's warm he's fighting with me to save claire's leg and we're gonna win that fight yes
18:00uh excuse me restroom park hey i thought you were in surgery i was necrotizing fasciitis
18:13no kidding so why are you out here because the new resident uh she's the new bailey except that
18:20she's the exact opposite of bailey in the most absurd horrifying profoundly disturbing ways
18:24miss dina i think the new resident is killing our patient
18:37dr harran is it it is and you are preston burke dr burke wow no kidding
18:43i'm a huge fan thank you i um i heard you had a case of necrotizing fasciitis so we don't
18:50see a lot of those around here yeah well being a cardiothoracic surgeon i wouldn't think you saw any
18:59right well i was just curious what protocol you were following here you were curious or christina
19:08was concerned i hope you'll forgive the intrusion it's nothing personal it's just we haven't worked
19:15with you before and dr yang wanted to be sure that dr yang wanted to be sure that the perky little bimbo
19:20cheerleader wasn't in here trying to kill a patient am i right now with all due respect dr burke i know
19:25you don't know me very well but i'm pretty good at what i do and my patient is a 25 year old marathoner
19:29and i've told her husband i'm going to try and save her legs so my plan is to stand here for as many
19:34hours as it takes to scrape away every last cell of necrotic flesh now when i'm done if it's still
19:38spreading then we'll take the leg and if we do then our eager young intern here can hold the saw
19:44now unlike dr karev kindness and compassion are very high on our list of priorities but
19:48a little bone saw action well maybe that'll earn me some respect am i right
19:56now dr yang you ready to scrub back in
20:01you're the head of this whole hospital just the surgeons well they should make you the head of
20:08everything she spat in the lashes you see this she spat in the lashes dr webber the point is grace
20:12wants to be with her lenny she misses him terribly you realize if i pull out the tube grace will die
20:20we're old magpie not deaf pull the plug already it's what she wants ladies i appreciate your concern for
20:27your friend but we need to contact a durable power of attorney to sign the release that's alice call alice
20:33a grace's daughter she's a lesbian well that's okay isn't it i mean she could still have the power
20:39of attorney uh fine but we'll need alice's signature good luck she lives in oregon oh she could fax it
20:46i'm sorry we'll need her original signature can't we just skip that part at the lashes again i think it
20:53was working excuse me ladies you're like the old lady whisperer they really cheer up when you come
21:03around merida you understand if the daughter shows up tomorrow and confirms she's dnr i have to kill my
21:11patient i know how you doing something i can do for you oh i'm fine sir i don't need any help from you
21:20thank you thank you serve very well hereafter in a better world than this i shall desire more love and
21:30knowledge of you to dr o'valley
21:39she called me unkind unkind and lacking in compassion in front of my boyfriend i am not unkind
21:46i think i have to kill a woman tomorrow i have to take out the tube that's keeping her alive
21:54where is he this is the part where you say what's wrong with you
22:01where are you going i have to i forgot something i'm working
22:07i have to kill a woman and that's a problem why i mean if it's what she wants it's what she wants and
22:12that is not unkind or lacking in compassion i'm a very compassionate person i'm more professional
22:19than you alex oh shut your pie hole yeah hey joe can we have another round please yeah give nurse
22:25o'malley a drink on me what'd you say hey uh karev just called me a nurse at least nurses aren't
22:34butchers you could come up with oh wait was that an insult or is that a
22:41are you kidding me i will kill you you know bring it on bring it on okay mama let's bring it on oh
22:50that's why we want to cheer it up soccer mom oh are you getting it oh hey hey hey hey

24:26in the picture she's six but she's 11 now
24:30she lived in santa barbara but they moved i don't know where but i know her name is hannah
24:41and she likes pigs pigs yep she collects them like figurines and stuffed animals you know
24:48i think it's probably because her mom ran her charlotte's wife
24:53i thought you were her mom
24:57i'm her mother but i'm not her mom
25:04look um i know that where we come from this kind of thing doesn't get talked about
25:12but i wanted you to know that there's more than one way to be a good mother
25:20i want it i want it better for her than i could do at 16
25:24i love my baby of course you do but you're reading her shakespeare
25:38when you're working 12-hour shifts at the diner like our moms you won't be coming home and reading
25:45i could hear you from six blocks away sorry don't be i like it
26:08um i'm just not sure how the neighbors would feel which by the way is not a thing someone lacking
26:16in compassion would be concerned with how's your patient's leg car called to hell but still on her
26:24body we're watching it overnight
26:33what's going on
26:33never in my career have i questioned a fellow surgeon and their o.r
26:43i've never understood what the problem was
26:47an intern dating and attending until today
26:59and don't believe 25 19 when she tells you that she went to the bathroom she just wants to go home
27:10she just says she went to the bathroom and then she's back here two days later
27:13hey i need sutures in 2602 can't help you

28:48you get to tell my kid how to live her life
28:52cheyenne is smart she's smart and she's thoughtful and she can have more she can have more than a
29:00trailer park and a graveyard shift at a truck stop diner don't you want that for her i mean if you can
29:08get past the fact that i'm superior and that i'm judging you and that i'm telling you what's
29:14best for your family if you can just get past all of that isn't it possible that i'm also right
29:28pretty spectacular recovery claire really do you think it's gonna be okay i think we got almost all

35:01Would you still say you loved me
35:05Under this ordinary moonlight?
35:14I'm so afraid
35:17May she rest in peace
35:24I'd like to know if you'd be open to
35:35Time of death
35:36Twelve
35:38Eight o'clock
35:41I'd like to know if you'd be open to
35:49Give me a second
35:53I used to think I was special
36:10I don't
36:12I can't
36:14I can't
36:15I can't
36:16I don't
36:17I don't
36:18I can't
36:20I don't
36:21I don't want my mother to die alone
36:26I don't want my mother to die alone
36:30I don't want to go
36:35ıyorum
36:36Get up
36:37Listen
36:42I beg your mouth
36:42I don't want my mother to die alone
36:44I don't want somebody to die soon
36:45Fatelov
36:49Shut up, shut up, shut up.
37:19I'm okay.
37:31You're okay.
37:40You're welcome.
37:49Do you ever wish you hadn't done it?
38:14No, I really don't.
38:19If I give her up, if I give her away, do I still get to name her?
38:28You can name her for yourself.
38:32Did you name yours?
38:40Sarah.
38:42That's a pretty name.
38:47Yeah.
38:49I think you should keep visiting her.
39:06You sure?
39:08Yeah.
39:10She lights up when you're around.
39:13She's alive.
39:14I can't do this in front of Alex.
39:25Well, you can and you will.
39:27Excuse me, why aren't you apologizing?
39:31I'm an attending.
39:32I don't apologize to residents.
39:34You, on the other hand, are an intern.
39:36Any available scrub nurse to OR3.
39:39Any available scrub nurse to OR3.
39:44Sydney, I just wanted to...
39:47Just wanted to...
39:50Apologize for, you know, over...
39:55I mean, I'm sorry.
39:58Well, that's a compassion I was looking for.
40:01Apology accepted.
40:03Okay, you want to hug it out?
40:04Oh, okay.
40:06Hug.
40:07Oh, yeah.
40:08Come on.
40:13We need them, Patricia.
40:16Yes, we need them.
40:17So, where do I find the spare change?
40:22It's not like whatever's hiding underneath the couch cushions is going to do it.
40:26Well, I seem to remember pushing through paperwork for a multi-million dollar surgery robot.
40:31There was a two-year waiting list for that.
40:33It will bring a huge business.
40:34And could you and the robot handle that business without nurses?
40:40We can't help ourselves.
40:42We see a line.
40:43We want to cross it.
40:45Maybe it's the thrill of trading the familiar for the unfamiliar.
40:50A sort of personal dare.
40:53Congratulations.
40:54Only problem is, once you've crossed, it's almost impossible to go back.
41:15You okay?
41:18Yeah.
41:20You know, I am.
41:21You okay?
41:33You okay?
41:36Yeah.
41:36What happened today?
41:40Nothing.
41:43Okay.
41:46We don't know everything about each other, George.
41:50Yeah.
41:52True.
41:53But, if you do manage to make it back across that line, you find safety in numbers.
42:01We don't know everything about each other.
42:02We don't know everything about each other.
42:03We don't know everything about each other.
42:03We don't know everything about each other.
42:04We don't know everything about each other.
42:05We don't know everything about each other.
42:06We don't know everything about each other.
42:07We don't know everything about each other.
42:08We don't know everything about each other.
42:09We don't know everything about each other.
42:10We don't know everything about each other.
42:11We don't know everything about each other.
42:12We don't know everything about each other.
42:13We don't know everything about each other.
42:14We don't know everything about each other.
42:15We don't know everything about each other.
42:16We don't know everything about each other.
42:17We don't know everything about each other.
42:18We don't know everything about each other.
42:19We don't know everything about each other.
