Labor candidate for Whitlam Carol Berry opens up about what life was like on the campaign trail. Footage by Adam McLean.
Transcript
00:00Yes. Look, it's been a really positive experience. We've had a really positive campaign, so we've
00:05tried to really focus on really putting a very positive story forward. And so I think
00:12that's worked well for us. But you never know, we have to wait the result.
00:17And it is your first time running as a candidate. Was there anything about the campaign or the
00:22campaign process that surprised you?
00:23I think the way that you feel very vulnerable and very exposed, your whole life and everything
00:31you've ever done or said is really under the spotlight. And mentally you understand that,
00:38but it has an emotional effect on you as well. So it's quite a big thing putting yourself
00:42forward as a candidate.
00:43And you've spent today going through a lot of polling booths. How many did you hit by
00:48the end of the day?
00:48We ended up hitting over 30, which is amazing. So there's 45 polling booths across Whitlam.
00:54So we were never going to get to all of them. But we've worked hard to get to as many as
00:58possible just to go around and say thank you to people. There's a lot of people in this
01:03room that have worked incredibly hard.
01:05And with the polling closing at 6pm, there's really nothing more you can do to try and win
01:10a seat. I guess, how does that feel to actually get to the finish line? Is it relief? Is it
01:15fear that you, I didn't do this, I didn't do that?
01:17Yeah, there's certainly a sense of relief. I feel like we did everything we could. And
01:22like I said before, you know, we really worked very hard to be really positive. And so that's
01:28been great. But you also feel a little bit nervous waiting for the result to come in.
01:33And how long do you think you'll have to wait to find out?
01:36Look, it's, you know, you'll probably, if there's anything that flashes up, you're going
01:40to hear a big cheer in the background. So hopefully there's a swing which is in our favour,
01:45but we'll need to wait and see. Thank you.
