Polls open in Australia as voters decide country’s future

Australians start to vote in a national election on May 3, 2025 that polls show will likely favor Labor Prime Minister Anthony Albanese over conservative challenger Peter Dutton, with voter appetite for change dampened by worries over Donald Trump's volatile diplomacy. Polling booths in Australia - among the few democracies with mandatory voting - opened at 8 a.m. (2200GMT). A record 8 million out of 18 million eligible voters had already cast ballots before Saturday. Both major parties have focused on cost-of-living pressures but opinion polls show that global uncertainty driven by Trump's stop-start tariffs rapidly became a top issue for voters during the campaign.

01:55So I voted for Allegra and Jacqui Lambie in the Senate and I think what was important

02:18people's lifestyle and our climate.
02:22I think what's scary about Trump is what the world can become very quickly if everyone
02:28goes that way and I'm really excited that Canada has not gone that way so I'm hopeful
