00:00Kieran McKenna said in his press conference that he's a big admirer of yours and he admires
00:04the fact that you've been able to stay at the very top level for a long time.
00:09What do you think the most important aspect of your work has been to be able to do that?
00:14I have a huge love of the game.
00:18It's easy to say to work hard is important but I think within my job I try and work hard
00:23when I can.
00:25I've always tried to keep improving and not sit back.
00:28I don't think you get the job when you put your feet under the table and you think you've
00:31done a good job.
00:32I think as a manager you need to keep going.
00:36I take a little bit of pride in longevity because longevity in any type of job means that you've
00:42done quite well.
00:43I've been really fortunate to manage loads of games in the Premier League, never mind the
00:47Championship as well.
00:48I've been the manager of quite a few teams in the Premier League and that tends to be a
00:54sign that people think they're doing okay or you can do a decent job.
00:57More importantly I'm really thankful that I've been given the chance to come back to
01:02Everton because I think maybe the time was right for if anybody was going to come back.
01:07There's a lot of brilliant managers being here over the years but maybe the time was right
01:12for me to come back and hopefully steer the ship in the right direction.
01:16We've still got a long, long way to go but we've started pretty well at the moment.
01:21Do you think you're the best version of you that you've ever been as a manager now?
01:26I've always said in probably all the press conferences, you've probably heard me say
01:29many times, I've said I always think the best is still to come.
01:33I've been really fortunate recently that I've been able to win a trophy, I've been taking
01:38teams into Europe for the last three years in a row.
01:42Yes but I still hope the best is still to come and I've got to hope that the years I've got
01:48with Everton just now I can try and get something close to those levels.
01:52How do you assess it?
01:54A great, great young manager who half the country wanted last year.
02:03I said that I think he was the only one and I could stand corrected here so if I'm wrong
02:10here that I think that he's the only one who's taken a team from the First Division to the
02:15Championship to the Premier League because I thought I was going to do it when I was manager
02:20of Preston. First Division straight up Championship that I lost in the playoff final to Big Sam's
02:26Bolton. Kieran's been able to take the team all the way which is an unbelievable achievement
02:31which when you have to jump those leagues and we're talking a bit now, we're all talking
02:36a lot about Wrexham at the moment, how well Wrexham's doing and amazing what Phil Parkinson's
02:40done but I think that Kieran has done that into the Premier League which is so good and
02:49let's just remember Ipswich as a club if you're of a generation when you remember the Ipswich
02:55Towns teams that were fantastic and they were challenging for Premier League titles, it wasn't
03:00Premier League then but First Division titles at that time so he's done it at a real football
03:05club and he'll be disappointed with this season but I think in the main he's done a brilliant
03:10job there.
