City council to move ahead despite 90% of people opposing scheme

00:09Almost two and a half years after it was first announced,
00:11Liverpool Council has endorsed plans to extend parking charges in the heart of town until 11pm.
00:17Now members of the local authorities' highways and public spaces representations committee
00:22have agreed to adopt the proposals despite almost 90% of respondents to public consultations
00:28saying they opposed the changes.
00:32In addition to the amendments to how long you can leave your car on the street,
00:35it will also cost more.
00:38In March, charges rose after the City Council's Cabinet confirmed in December
00:42it would hike up prices by as much as 60% in some places.
00:47An informal consultation resulted in 89% of respondents saying they were against the changes
00:53to charging times while in a formal engagement exercise in 2023.
00:58Only 9% of those surveyed said they'd support the idea.
01:04The local authorities said the proposed changes aim to reduce congestion and improve road safety.
01:09Additional changes include an increased maximum stay in the Hope Street area.
01:14Pay and display bays will have their maximum stay increased from two to four hours.
01:18Certain loading and limited waiting bays will also be converted to pay and display residential
01:23or disabled bays during evening hours.
