Handsworth residents say why the oppose green belt housing plans
Transcript
00:00People are feeling really strongly about this. They're devastated
00:03on both areas of housing and we will go to
00:07whatever lengths we can. As a community we will stick together
00:11and we'll fight this every step of the way. I'm Michelle Deweyer
00:15and I live on the Beaver Drive, the Beaver Estate at Hansworth
00:20and that leads to Bramley Estate. They're proposing to build obviously
00:26on this beautiful land behind and all six farmers
00:29fields that stretch from here to Bramley that is actually everybody's
00:34go-to place for mental health and mental well-being.
00:39My name's Claire Coniston and I live on Bramley
00:43over there and all this has always been farmland
00:47and losing the farmland we just never get it back and the food production back.
00:53Right so there's six farmers fields in total that they would be taking away to
00:58build this concrete jungle. These fields are owned by I believe Sheffield
01:04City Council and the farmer would rent these fields off him
01:09and put plant crops. The crops haven't been planted this year
01:14so this is really a bad sign. My name's Trevor Ebert
01:16this is my wife Jack Ebert. We've lived here at number one Beaver Drive for 43 years
01:23so we obviously like it around here and one of the the biggest draws for us is the fields at the back
01:30that that I will say during Covid I were in clinically vulnerable group so I virtually couldn't
01:36leave my doorstep but my doctor allowed me to walk in these fields and I'm sure they're the thing
01:44that people do not consider when they put in planning through or approval for planning and rest of it.
01:51That was a lifesaver for both me and my wife.
01:54I won the Starwalk in 1983 the Sheffield Starwalk and part of my training was stamina building which I
02:03used the same woods again that they're looking to destroy.
02:07An extra 860 odd houses that would be in the distance and all through the six farmers fields
02:14and on this area would have even more congestion and extreme effects of pollution.
02:20We have a woodpecker which you can obviously difficult to get a photo of that you can hear it.
02:25We've got owls on here which you hear early morning and night and then you've also got
02:31the bats which obviously used to dive on me and my friend when we were walking our dog.
02:35I just feel very passionate as do a lot of other people living here and around about on both estates
02:42that we have got such a beautiful area and the animals have a right to live here.
