Should Sheffield City Council build in green belt?

00:00It's called a greenbelt for the reason and I do believe there are other sites that are the more suitable.
00:05I actually believe that people should, or politicians, should look into those sites first before they start encroaching on the greenbelt.
00:14Because once that greenbelt's gone, it's gone.
00:18And we've got to build the infrastructure to go with the houses.
00:22There will have to be other things, shops, schools built as well.
00:27And I think they need to really think again and take it back to the drawing board before they make any rash decisions on the building on the greenbelt.
00:36I think it's a matter of balance. We need the housing.
00:40But, you know, and if there is really no greenbelt, I think I'd rather see going into greenbelt than more high-rise.
00:49I think we need to build decent houses for people, decent affordable houses for people.
00:54And, yeah, that is a priority.
00:58So, again, it has to be unmarried because I wouldn't like to see a lot of greenbelt disappear.
01:05But you're opposed to high-rises?
01:08I am opposed to high-rise. Very high-rise.
01:11Why, may I ask?
01:13Because I think that it doesn't offer human living.
01:20And I think no matter how you put it, when it gets beyond a certain height, and certainly some of the plans that I've seen,
01:27they're very small apartments, and even though they've got communal space, perhaps at the end of the corridor,
01:33a lot of people wouldn't like that.
01:36And I think the sort of people that might go into them are people that can't afford very much, new to the city, perhaps.
01:42And I think it's just going to breed loneliness and mental health problems.
01:47So, what I don't understand is whether the council are going to make a profit from it,
01:51and if that's going to help to support local services, then I'd be in support of it, but it has to be balanced with green issues.
01:58I'm also quite heartened to see that it's spread across the city, and that it's not in areas of poverty or acute poverty,
02:05that it's spread across the city.
02:07But, yeah, I guess I'd like to see them balancing all those needs really, and consulting with the local population.
