00:00:00Welcome to the brilliant athletic club museum. It's a place that represents a footballing family
00:00:19with values that are less seen in the modern day game. It's emblem, a lion. It's got a fierceness,
00:00:25a pride, a basque heart with British origin and a trophy filled cabinet that proves why
00:00:30it's the third most successful Spanish club of all time. In the dugout they've had some
00:00:36iconic managers including Howard Kendall, Marcelo Bielsa and the guy that's currently
00:00:41in the hot seats is this guy, Ernesto Valverde. Every person thinks that the club who they
00:00:49support, they are the most special in the world. We think this about Athletic. Here
00:00:55in the stadium we create I think a different atmosphere, all the people are pushing us
00:01:01and between us there is something stronger than in the other clubs I think.
00:01:06Well it is quite incredible that Athletic have managed to maintain their success on the pitch
00:01:10while sticking to their philosophy of basque only players and their latest homegrown talent,
00:01:16to our team. It's a privilege to be able to play here in this team. I think the Athletic
00:01:23is a story. It's an honor to be able to be here. I think we have an incredible philosophy
00:01:28and I hope we can continue to be here for a long time and be happy here. It's special
00:01:34with the team that I've spent since 11 years. It's an honor to be here for my mother and for
00:01:39all my family and especially to be able to play with my brother is incredible. I hope we can

00:01:47Once Athletic, always Athletic. Around 45,000 names adorn this wall here in a homage to the
00:01:54fans and it's a club that put people and community at the heart of everything it does.

00:02:09to show you the guitar. Now this was the guitar that first played the club's anthem some 75
00:02:14years ago. No I'm not going to sing it for you but I'm sure you'll hear a rendition one
00:02:18or two times before kickoff. I love that and there are thousands of fans in the city getting
00:02:32ready for a huge European night and Becky's been out and about soaking up the atmosphere.

00:02:44town whether they've got a ticket or not have turned up in the streets in their Athletic
00:02:49Club strips and they're just soaking up the atmosphere. Come with me because I've managed to

00:03:29Manchester United visiting Bilbao as well. In 1957 you'll remember this. It was the
00:03:36European Cup quarter-final first leg which was played in the snow. These pictures are
00:03:40really famous. Athletic Club twice came from behind to win 5-3. Manchester United then
00:03:46ended up winning the second leg 3-0 to get through. But there was a more recent
00:03:52meeting. This one Scalzi will definitely remember. Athletic Club
00:03:56knocking Man United out of Europe in 2012. It was a really interesting couple of legs.
00:04:02To be fair Paul you didn't play in either of those games but Rio did and we'll also
00:04:08remember the man next to him. Athletic Club legend Fernando Llorente who gave you a bit of a
00:04:12torrid time Rio didn't he? Yeah I mean this is the closest I probably got to him in a long time. I didn't get close enough to him on that day. He scored a wonderful goal. Do you remember the goal? Yeah.
00:04:26Funnily we met each other in Berlin when we were out there for the Euros and he reminded me about that goal again.
00:04:32But this place obviously was in a different stadium. How important is this stadium for this team now?
00:04:37I think it's really important. You know. You remember that night. These fans helped us a lot. And then they want to reach the final because the final is here. The motivated. It's extra for them. I think they are playing so good in the league as well. Good season. And it's right that United is a very good team. Very experienced. Very big players.
00:05:06Very big players. And it was really difficult as well for them. What are the threats that Athletic Bilbao have for Manchester United? Where do Man United have to look at and go? We have to be careful of these guys. Which players would you say? I think Manchester United can do goal in all the plays.

00:08:56A moment that some are saying could be the turning point for Ruben Amarim.
00:09:02Well, Ruben, they say nothing comes easy, but it was the Lyon game even more of a rollercoaster than what you could possibly have imagined.
00:09:08Yeah, it was a special moment, a special game. We need to give credit not just to the players, but also to the fans.
00:09:16Anything can happen in Old Trafford, but it's in the past. We need to do better this time.
00:09:21We should be judged by Premier League, not European football, but it's really important for us. Not just for the title to win a title, but also for the title.

00:11:23I didn't watch it. I had my back turned to it. Well, he scored it.
00:11:26And Manchester United are booking him.

00:11:31The Colby main goal was what really kicked Old Trafford into gate.

00:11:46I ran down into this corner and I thought, it's unbelievable.
00:11:49The sort of pandemonium settled down, you think, actually, we could win this.
00:11:52I don't know how we ended up with the ball back, but we did.

00:12:07The place just erupted. It was absolute chaos.

00:12:14I've never heard Old Trafford roar quite like that.
00:12:17It was just a sea of people. Arms and legs, limbs everywhere.
00:12:21And everyone's falling over it, hugging one another and everything.
00:12:24It was just bonkers.
00:12:25Just a phenomenal feel. I've just been at one big party.
00:12:27It was some young kids. They ain't got tears in their eyes.
00:12:30Can you believe what we're seeing? Can you believe this has happened?
00:12:33To be honest, no, I still don't think I can believe that happened.
00:12:40It's amazing reliving that through the fans' eyes.
00:12:43Incredible, legendary comeback for Manchester United at Old Trafford.
00:12:46And you can see the reaction on social media that it got from Manchester United fans and just football fans in general.
00:12:52But in those big games, Paul, you need your big players to step up and have special games.
00:12:57Casemiro was involved in all three comeback goals, won the penalty, provided two decisive assists.
00:13:04Was that one of his best performances in a United shirt?
00:13:07Yeah, I think it probably was. He's a player who's had a lot of criticism.
00:13:11We know that because we expected probably a lot more than what he's done so far.
00:13:16Especially with his performances at Real Madrid, obviously, in a brilliant football team.
00:13:21But, look, he was very good in that game. He was a leader, really. I know he wasn't the captain, but he really grabbed the name by the scruff of the neck.
00:13:29A little mistake here, I suppose, from Casemiro that Luke Shaw gives the penalty away.
00:13:33But he was involved in a lot of stuff in this game, and it was good to see.
00:13:37And it was something that we've been accepting. He obviously wins the penalty.
00:13:40I do think it's a little bit of a soft penalty, but he knows what he's doing.
00:13:44A little nick there. He doesn't have to go down.
00:13:47I don't really like seeing that, but, you know, it was something that was needed to try and get back into the game.
00:13:53He's been criticised in a United shirt, Karen, but did that performance show he's still got the ability to turn it on in crucial moments?
00:14:00I think he stepped up. Look, this is Man United's biggest game of the season, but it's certainly not Casemiro's in his whole career.
00:14:06And it's his experience. Like Paul says, it's a soft penalty, but it's someone that knows how to win a penalty with his experience
00:14:13and get his team back into a game when he needed to, especially when he did make a little bit of an error.
00:14:18But this will be intimidating for some of the young Man United players tonight.
00:14:22And he'll have to guide them, help them, support them.
00:14:24And this is when you need him to step up and show that experience that he's had previously.
00:14:28We know that the whole team are working hard to try and implement Ruben Amrum's new system and this new style of play.
00:14:33But what area do you think they still look most vulnerable in, particularly coming into this game tonight?
00:14:38Well, I think, like, last against Lyon, when they brought on Fofana, I thought they looked really vulnerable in the wide areas.
00:14:44Manchester United and, you know, Rio, Zas, Llorente there.
00:14:47And we've all had this, speaking about Nico Williams, how good he is, and the Williams brothers actually in wide areas.
00:14:53I really do worry who's going to defend him.
00:14:56And I think it will be Yaro and Majewawi.
00:14:58I know we've got Dorgu highlighted there, but I expect both the wing-backs and also the centre-backs to really,
00:15:03they're going to have to play their best game.
00:15:05Because, like I said, a Lyon Fofana came on and he tore Man United apart.
00:15:08That's how they got back into the game.
00:15:10And Nico Williams is another level up.
00:15:12That's why he's one of Euros and he's touted all over Europe.
00:15:15So they're going to have to be at their best tonight, all the wide players, defensively.

00:15:46Now, whether they rival Anton and Rio, that's for you to decide. We'll see.

00:15:53There's so much hype around it, but the hype is real, right?

00:15:59The pace that he's got, I think, in today's game, in any time, any era, pace is a huge asset to have.

00:16:08He's not one of those quick players that's quick but doesn't really think about the game or doesn't understand the game.

00:16:19I'm sorry, all these fans, he's one of the first names that they think about when they want to get into this stadium.

00:19:41Yes, they can play, but we need to be careful with them.

00:20:21I think if you look again, if you look at this team in the past years also,
00:20:27they can, in these kind of moments, final cup finals,
00:20:32these kind of moments against Lyon, against Real Sociedad.
00:20:35So we show that we can win these kind of games.
00:20:38So we are prepared for that.
00:20:39The first 20 minutes of this game, what do you anticipate you'll come up against
00:20:42and how do you manage it?
00:20:44A lot of pressure and we have to be ready.
00:20:48We have to be better than against Bournemouth.
00:20:50We already knew against Bournemouth and then I felt that in the beginning of the game
00:20:55we were not ready for this kind of pressure.
00:20:57So today we need to be better, especially in the first minutes.

00:21:04There's no doubt it is going to be a tough match for Manchester United out there this evening.
00:21:09But perhaps their draw against Bournemouth at the weekend was a good test ahead of this one, Paul.
00:21:14Because they play a similar style of football and also managed by a Basque coach as well.
00:21:20What do you think United will have learnt from that?
00:21:23I hope they learnt quite a lot.
00:21:25I wouldn't be trying to play out from the back as they did at Bournemouth.
00:21:28Bournemouth is a tight ground.
00:21:29It's possibly a little bit easier for more to get up against them.
00:21:32But when it doesn't come off of Manchester United playing out from the back,
00:21:35it can look a little bit uncomfortable at times.
00:21:38We did the game two years ago, the last time they got beaten Europe against Seville.
00:21:42In the first 20 minutes they were all over the place, Manchester United,
00:21:44to train this type of stuff.
00:21:46And Valverde is a brilliant coach.
00:21:48He will get right up against this.
00:21:50And he'll be thinking he can score for Man United's possession.
00:21:53Now that's how good he is.
00:21:55But Hoyland there, Karen, with his goal.
00:21:58Yeah, I mean, look, that's great for him personally.
00:22:00But just going back to the manager's interview,
00:22:02it's a little bit worrying that he didn't think that the team were up for it at the start
00:22:05when you're up against Bournemouth's team who are known for physicality and pressing.
00:22:08So that's a little bit concerning.
00:22:10If they start and have that mentality tonight,
00:22:12they won't make it to the second leg at Old Trafford.
00:22:14So they've got to start bright.
00:22:15That late equaliser from Rajmas Hoyland against Bournemouth though, Karen,
00:22:19just his second goal in 2025.
00:22:21But can he now use that as a platform to build on?
00:22:24Because last season we saw he has the ability to go on a streak once he scores.
00:22:28Yeah, like I said, just briefly there, it's great for his confidence.
00:22:32But what I liked in the last leg is some parts of the season I've seen him not hold the ball up so well.
00:22:37And last week I thought it was so, so important.
00:22:40It was so important tonight, the link up play.
00:22:42And there was a couple of moments there.
00:22:43And like I said, I think he's been bullied a lot this season.
00:22:45But I was really pleased because you sent a forward.
00:22:48If you're not in amongst the goals, you've got to link play well.
00:22:51And tonight they might not have possession, they might have to counter attack.
00:22:54He's got to do this, hold and link people like Bruno in, Garnaccio in, that they can build attacks.
00:22:58OK, they make bad decisions.
00:23:00But you've put things on the plate.
00:23:02And I do like this.
00:23:03I like the anger.
00:23:04I like the attitude.
00:23:05Because after the goal at the weekend, he should be saying, keep serving me, keep serving me.
00:23:08But I've been quite pleased with him in the last couple of weeks.
00:23:11It's not ideal for United when they've been struggling to score goals this season, Paul.
00:23:15And tonight they're up against the best defence in La Liga, in Athletic Club.
00:23:20And they also have the best home defence in Europe's top five leagues.
00:23:26That is quite a phenomenal record.
00:23:28Yeah, it's amazing.
00:23:29As I said before, Valverde is a brilliant coach and this team are brilliantly coached.
00:23:33They'll be good at either end of the football pitch.
00:23:36I just worry, you know, we talk about Hoyland a lot and say, where do his goals come from?
00:23:41He's playing in a really defensive team.
00:23:43If you look at it, you'd think there's a back three.
00:23:45The two wing backs are very defensive now.
00:23:47They're more backs than wingers.
00:23:49Obviously, you're guarding Casemiro there.
00:23:51You're holding midfield players.
00:23:53Where does his service come from?
00:23:55I don't think Garnaccio is that type of player.
00:23:57He isn't someone who's clever enough to play a little passing to him.
00:24:00I think the only player he can possibly link with is Bruno Fernandes.

00:24:05Hoyland's looking around thinking, Lugati's on the ball.

00:24:11The two wing backs, they get to a certain part of the pitch and they're not good enough in the forward areas of the pitch.
00:24:16There's only Bruno Fernandes where you look at him and think, right, I can go.

00:24:20And do what he thinks might be dangerous.
00:24:23So, look, for some reason, I don't know what it is when Europa League, they've scored goals.
00:24:27It's not really been a problem to him in the Premier League.
