At a Cabinet meeting on Wednesday, Secretary Marco Rubio was asked about Kilmar Abrego Garcia.
Transcript
00:00Secretary Rubio, can I ask you a question?
00:03You've brought up El Salvador in your remarks.
00:05Have you been in touch with El Salvador about returning Abrego Garcia?
00:09Has a formal request from this administration been made?
00:11Well, I would never tell you that.
00:13And you know who else I'll never tell?
00:14A judge.
00:15Because the conduct of our foreign policy belongs to the President of the United States
00:18and the Executive Branch, not some judge.
00:20So we will conduct foreign policy appropriately if we need to.
00:24But I'll never discuss it.
00:25And no one will ever make us discuss it because that's how foreign policy works.
00:28Mr. President.
00:29Yesterday, Mr. President, yesterday you told ABC News, Mr. President,
00:32you told ABC News yesterday that you could get Abrego Garcia back if you wanted to.
00:37Do you think President Bukele would turn you down if you made that request?
00:40I really don't know.
00:41I know that he's been a great friend of our country.
00:45He's gotten a lot less money than this would take from us
00:48if we were going to build these jails and do what he's doing.
00:52And they run a very professional operation.
00:54I don't know.
00:55I haven't spoken to him.
00:56I really leave that to the lawyers.
00:57And I take my advice from Pam and everybody that is very much involved.
01:02They know the laws.
01:03And we follow the laws exactly.
