At a press briefing in San Salvador, El Salvador, Rep. Robert Garcia (D-CA) detailed a letter to Secretary of State Marco Rubio calling for the return of Kilmar Abrego Garcia to the U.S.
Transcript
00:00I'm going to make one more comment in English and then I'll do the Spanish and then we'll open up for questions.
00:04We also want to just be very clear that in our discussions at the embassy,
00:10but also in a letter that we have sent to Secretary Rubio and to the U.S. ambassador,
00:15that we're here because we want Kilmer released.
00:18But we also know there are other people here in these prisons that have been essentially given no due process.
00:25And we want to highlight the case of Andri Romero, who is with an asylum seeker coming to the United States,
00:33who was coming to the U.S. and was abducted.
00:37He had an appointment through the asylum process that was granted by our government to seek asylum.
00:43He's 19 years old. He's a young gay man. He's a hairdresser.
00:48His family is incredibly worried.
00:50We know that he has had no gang affiliations that anyone is aware of or that they've presented in a court of law.
00:58And we have not heard from him since the abduction actually happened now weeks ago.
01:04And so there's a young 19-year-old here in an El Salvadorian prison who we need to know.
01:08We've asked, and this is our plea to the embassy here, is to confirm that he is alive.
01:15We've asked to see him, that he's alive, or that at a minimum his attorneys can do a welfare check on his whereabouts.
01:22And that is the case of Andri Romero, very important for us in the United States and hopefully here as well.
01:27In Spanish, I just want to say, my name is Roberto Garcia.
01:31I'm here with three other congressmen.
01:33Congressmen Maxwell Frost, Yasemin Ansari and Maxine Dexter.
01:38All from California, Florida, Arizona and also from Oregon, the United States.
01:45We're here because we're telling the President Donald Trump that he has to return to Kilmer Abreu Garcia to the United States.
01:53The Supreme Court of the United States, 9-0, has told the President that he has to return to Kilmer Abreu Garcia to the United States.
02:02Other courts in the United States also have told that he has to return to the United States.
02:07All of this is very important.
02:09And let me tell you also another thing.
02:12The administration of Donald Trump also has told that they sent him here and it was an accident.
02:18That he didn't have to return to El Salvador.
02:22It was an accident.
02:23He has to return.
02:25And that's the reason why we're here and we're going to return to Kilmer and other people who are here in El Salvador to return to Los Estados Unidos.
02:33So with that, we're going to open for any questions.
02:36So we'll take any questions that anyone can answer.
03:30Any other questions?
