00:00Good evening, you're watching Awani tonight with me from Hanashe.
00:12U.S. President Donald Trump marked the first hundred days in office of his second term
00:17with a rally just outside of Detroit.
00:20He celebrated the milestone with a campaign-style speech
00:23touting his administration's achievements and targeting political foes.
00:27And we're here tonight in the heartland of our nation
00:32to celebrate the most successful first 100 days of any administration
00:37in the history of our country, and that's according to many, many people.
00:44This is the best, they say, 100-day start of any president in history,
00:49and everyone is saying it.
00:51We've just gotten started.
00:53You haven't even seen anything yet.
00:55It's all just kicking in.
00:57At the rally, Trump dismissed opinion polls indicating his popularity had fallen as fake.
01:03Speaking at the hub of America's automotive industry,
01:06he claimed car firms were queuing to set up new manufacturing plants in the Midwestern state.
01:12He also touted progress on immigration, citing decreasing encounters at the southern border
01:18that have dropped from 140,000 to just over 7,000.
01:22Nothing will stop me and the mission to keep America safe again.
01:28It's very simple.
01:28Keep America safe again.
01:33And our first 100 days have also produced historic results in the battle to defeat Biden's inflation disaster
01:40and bring jobs and wealth back to America and bring them back to Michigan.
01:44U.S. President Donald Trump called newly elected Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney to congratulate him on his recent victory.
01:58The two have also agreed to meet in the near future following Monday's vote.
02:03Canada and the U.S. are expected to enter talks about a new economic and security relationship.
02:11Trump's trade tariffs and repeated comments on Canada's sovereignty had overshadowed the race,
02:17which ended with Carney's Liberals winning a minority government.
02:21Shortly after declaring victory, Carney vowed Canada would never yield to the U.S., sending a message of unity.
02:27The Liberal Party leader has promised action on a range of domestic issues,
02:32spanning from the country's housing crisis and tax cuts for lower- and middle-income Canadians.
02:38The Prime Minister also needs to prepare for the G7 summit in June,
02:42which Canada will be hosting in the province of Alberta.
02:45He has predicted to choose his new cabinet in the weeks leading up to Parliament's scheduled return in late May.
02:53We'll go for a quick break. Don't go anywhere.
02:57Amazon says it had considered showing import charges on its low-cost haul platform in response to new U.S. tariffs.
03:25However, they denied any such plan for its main website after the White House accused it of a politically motivated move.
03:35The Seattle-based retailer spent the morning pushing back on a punch-ball news report,
03:40claiming it would display tariff-inclusive prices on Amazon.com.
03:44Amazon says that its discount platform haul had considered showing import fees
03:49on selected, inexpensive China-made products, but the proposal was ultimately rejected and never approved.
03:57The confusion initially prompted a 2% drop in Amazon shares.
04:01A White House official said President Donald Trump personally called Amazon founder and executive chairman,
04:06Jeff Bezos, to complain about the punch-ball news report.
04:09Since Trump took office, he has imposed sweeping tariffs, including a 145% increase on Chinese goods,
04:17sending many corporations scrambling.
04:20Amazon's haul site, similar to popular low-cost site Timu, relies heavily on Chinese imports
04:26and offers longer shipping times in exchange for lower prices,
04:30and is particularly susceptible to these tariffs.
04:33China has created a list of U.S.-made products that would be exempted from its 125% tariffs.
04:43Currently, Chinese officials are quietly notifying companies affected by the policy shift
04:49as Beijing seeks to ease the impact of its trade war with Washington.
04:53China has already granted tariff exemptions on items like pharmaceuticals, microchips and aircraft engines
05:03and is asking firms to flag other critical items they need levy-free.
05:08The full exemption list remains undisclosed,
05:10and the existence of this so-called whitelist had not been previously reported, according to sources.
05:16This low-profile approach allows China to offer concessions while maintaining its public stance,
05:21insisting it will not back down unless the U.S. lifts its 145% tariffs.
05:27The list of exempted products also appears to be growing.
05:31Reuters reported that China has waived tariffs on U.S. ethane imports
05:35after major processors requested exemptions, as the U.S. is their only supplier.
05:43China has also lifted sanctions on four current and one former member of the European Parliament,
05:50as well as its subcommittee on human rights.
05:53According to a parliament official, European Parliament President Roberta Messola
05:57is expected to announce the change later today.
06:02The sanctions being lifted were initially imposed in 2021
06:07in response to Western measures against Chinese officials
06:10over the mass detentions of Muslim Uyghurs.
06:13In response, the European Parliament halted the ratification
06:16of the EU-China Comprehensive Agreement on Investment,
06:20which had aimed to put EU companies on an equal footing in China.
06:24With U.S. tariffs hitting most of China's exports,
06:28Beijing is seeking closer economic and political ties with Europe.
06:32When asked about reports that Beijing would lift sanctions,
06:35Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said
06:38China-Europe trade relations were complementary and mutually beneficial,
06:43adding that he hoped both sides would meet each other halfway
06:46to strengthen exchanges.
06:48He also welcomed more visits from EU lawmakers to China.
06:55China's President Xi Jinping visited Shanghai
06:58and called for the city to accelerate efforts
07:01to turn itself into a technological and innovation hub
07:04with global influence.
07:06According to state news agency Xinhua,
07:09Xi also urged the city to expand its exploration of AI models.
07:15Other than that, he also said that more supportive policies
07:18for the technology should be rolled out.
07:21Although Xi did not reference the trade war started
07:23by U.S. President Donald Trump during his visit,
07:26the implicit message was clear.
07:28China can develop its own leading technology
07:30and has alternative markets.
07:32Xi's Shanghai trip,
07:35his first to China's main international financial hub
07:38since November 2023,
07:40comes at a time when the tariff fight with the U.S.
07:42has raised the stakes for global economic growth.
07:46This as Beijing pursues AI development
07:48in the wake of the global success
07:50of Chinese AI startup DeepSig.
07:55President Vladimir Putin is open to peace in Ukraine.
07:59However, the Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov
08:02says the conflict is so complicated
08:04that the rapid progress which Washington wants
08:07is difficult to achieve.
08:11He added that Putin is willing to hold direct talks with Ukraine,
08:15but Kyiv has yet to respond.
08:18U.S. President Donald Trump,
08:19who says he wants to remember it as a peacemaker,
08:22has repeatedly vowed to end what he calls
08:24the bloodbath in Ukraine,
08:26a war his administration now describes
08:28as a proxy conflict between the U.S. and Russia.
08:32Trump said on Tuesday,
08:34he thought that Putin wants to stop the war in Ukraine,
08:37adding that if it was not for Trump,
08:39then Russia would try to take the whole of Ukraine.
08:42But he declined to say whether the U.S.
08:43would continue military aid if it left the talks.
08:47Putin's decision to send tens of thousands of troops
08:50into Ukraine in 2022
08:52triggered the worst crisis between Moscow and the West
08:55since the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis,
08:58the closest to Cold War powers came to nuclear war.
09:02At LamaCon 2025,
09:06Meta's first-ever AI developer conference,
09:09CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Microsoft chairman
09:12and CEO Satya Nadella
09:13discussed the future of AI development,
09:16emphasizing the increasing role of AI in software creation.
09:20Nadella notes that 20-30% of Microsoft's code
09:24is now generated by AI,
09:26while Zuckerberg predicts that AI will handle
09:29half of Meta's software development within a year.
09:33The big one that we're focused on
09:35is building an AI and a machine learning engineer
09:40to advance the Lama development itself, right?
09:43Because, I mean, our bet is sort of that
09:45in the next year,
09:47probably, you know,
09:50I don't know, maybe half the development
09:52is going to be done by AI as opposed to people,
09:55and then that will just kind of increase from there.
09:57That, to me, is, I think,
09:59one of the biggest roles of open source, right,
10:01which is to be able to take, let's say,
10:05some of your, even inside of the Lama family,
10:08taking a large model,
10:09and then to be able to distill it
10:12into a smaller model that has even that same model shape,
10:16I think is a big use case.
10:20Meta Platforms on Tuesday announced
10:22an application programming interface
10:23in the bid to businesses
10:25to more easily build AI products
10:27using its Lama artificial intelligence models.
10:31Lama API, which was unveiled earlier during the event,
10:34will help Meta go up against APIs
10:36offered by rival model makers,
10:38including Microsoft-backed OpenAI,
10:40Alphabet's Google,
10:42and emerging low-cost alternatives
10:43such as China's DeepSeq.
10:46The company also released
10:48a standalone AI assistant app
10:49earlier on Tuesday.
10:51It plans to test a paid subscription service
10:53of its AI chatbot
10:55in the second quarter,
10:56Reuters reported in February.
10:59Meta releases its Lama models
11:00largely free of charge for use by developers,
11:03a strategy CEO Mark Zuckerberg
11:05previously stated will pay off
11:07in the form of innovative products,
11:09less dependence on would-be competitors,
11:11and greater engagement
11:12on the company's core social networks.
11:15In other news,
11:20amid rising tensions
11:21between Pakistan and India,
11:23an expert says
11:24a limited war
11:25could be possible
11:26in the aftermath
11:27of a deadly militant attack
11:29on tourists in Kashmir.
11:31Tensions are simmering
11:33between the two nuclear-armed nations
11:34as India said
11:36there were Pakistani elements
11:37to the attack
11:38that killed 26 men
11:40at a tourist spot
11:41in Indian Kashmir last week.
11:43However, Islamabad has denied any role
11:47and called for a neutral investigation.
11:50Meanwhile,
11:50Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi
11:52has vowed to pursue
11:53and punish the attackers.
11:55India seems determined
11:57to initiate a war
11:58but it can be a limited
12:00or limited war
12:02or can't be a full-scale war
12:04because both countries
12:05are nuclear power,
12:06nuclear forces.
12:08So there are very, very,
12:10I mean,
12:11very, very feeble chances
12:12that a full-scale war
12:14can be initiated,
12:15it can be started.
12:17But definitely,
12:19border skirmishes
12:20and border violations
12:21are expected
12:22and India
12:23is currently doing that.
12:26South Asia can be in danger
12:28due to India's aggression
12:30and India is also suffering.
12:33India would definitely suffer
12:35more than Pakistan.
12:37India would be losing
12:38$1 billion
12:38due to trade
12:40color
12:41of which
12:42Pakistani side
12:44have taken my year.
12:46Pakistan's Information Minister
12:48Attaullah Tarar
12:49said that the country
12:50has credible intelligence
12:51that India intends
12:52to launch a military strike
12:54within the next
12:5524 to 36 hours.
12:57Since the attack,
12:59the nuclear-armed nations
13:00have unleashed
13:01a raft of measures
13:02against each other
13:03with India suspending
13:04the Critical Indus Waters Treaty
13:06and Pakistan
13:07closing its airspace
13:08to Indian airlines.
13:14That brings us
13:15to the end
13:15of Awani tonight
13:16and the end
13:17of this program.
13:19As we turn the page,
13:20we invite you
13:21to join us tomorrow
13:22for the launch
13:23of Awani International,
13:24your new destination
13:25for sharp
13:26in-depth analysis
13:27of the rivalries,
13:29strategies,
13:30and the shifts
13:31behind the power affairs
13:32driving the new
13:33global order.
13:34We also would like
13:35to take this opportunity
13:36to sincerely thank you,
13:38our viewers,
13:39for your trust,
13:40loyalty,
13:41and continued support.
