00:00According to an analyst, any attempts by the Trump administration to arm twist nations,

00:06including ASEAN countries, into curbing trade with China during tariff negotiations will fail.

00:13James Chin, professor of Asian Studies at the University of Tasmania,

00:17said the U.S. cannot force countries to stop trading or reduce trade with China

00:21given it is the manufacturing center of the world.

00:24He said countries cannot stop trading with China as its goods are the cheapest

00:28and have the best quality.

00:30Adding that even if the U.S. applies pressure, it's not going to work.

00:34He also said even consumers in Malaysia will be unhappy if trade with China is blocked.

00:39Chin said that whatever tariff deal Malaysia strikes with the U.S.

00:43would not harm the interests of China or any other country,

00:47noting that even other ASEAN countries will adopt the same strategy of negotiating directly

00:52with the Trump administration,

00:53as most nations are mature enough to recognize that trade and political links are entirely separate.

01:05is preparing to pressure countries seeking tariff reductions or exemptions to curb trade with China.

01:11Meanwhile, Investment Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Zafir al-Aziz said yesterday

01:17that the U.S. had agreed to commence formal negotiations with Malaysia

01:21with talks set to focus on reducing the 24% tariff rate,

01:26addressing non-tariff trade barriers,

01:27and tackling the trade imbalance between the two nations.
