President Donald Trump marked his controversial first 100 days in office with a fiery rally in Michigan, delivering what he called an "achievement speech" amid rising economic concerns over his tariff policies. In a surprising moment that stunned both supporters and critics, Trump embraced Democratic Governor Gretchen Whitmer — a longtime political rival — on stage. He also announced a major fighter jet deal to secure the

00:30Well, I guess they think we're going to save this place.
00:40And you know what?
00:41They're right.
00:42100 percent right.
00:43We're going to save it and make it better, actually.
00:45So at ease, everybody, at ease.
00:47Enjoy yourself.
00:48Sit down if you can.
00:49If those are cheers, yeah, they are, in a sense.
00:54Thank you very much.
00:55It's an honor to be back in the great state of Michigan.
01:00And as you know, we had big victory in Michigan.
01:03And I won't forget it, and I'm not forgetting it.
01:07And I'm honored to be here at Selfridge Air National Guard Base with the men and women
01:13of the 127th Wing of the Michigan Air National Guard.
01:20Thank you very much for being here.
01:21This is great.
01:22It's a great honor, and a great honor for me.
01:24We've had such success in Michigan.
01:27I want to thank the Secretary of Defense, Pete Hegseth, who's doing a really great job.
01:33The Hooties will tell you that.
01:35He's doing a very good job.
01:38Thank you, General Paul Rogers, and Brigadier General Daniel Kramer of the Michigan National
01:43Guard.
01:45Commander of the 127th Wing, Brigadier General Matthew Bronchato.
01:52Thank you very much.
01:53Deputy Commander Colonel David Spihar, wherever you may be, David.
01:59Where's David?
02:01Huh?
02:02Hello.
02:03Hi, hello, David.
02:04Where?
02:05Where the hell are you, David?
02:07Hello.
02:08Hello, David.
02:09Thank you very much.
02:11He's like the quiet type, right?
02:14But a killer, I hear.
02:17Command Chief Master Sergeant Bruce Hedrick.
02:20Bruce?
02:21Hello, Bruce.
02:23Thank you very much, Bruce.
02:25Thank you, Bruce.
02:26Great job.
02:28For decades, they've been trying to save this facility.
02:33I didn't realize that.
02:34I thought it was just recently because I heard about it recently from some people, including
02:38your governor, who has done a very good job.
02:42She came to see me.
02:44That's the reason she came to see me, by the way, to save Selfridge.
02:48And she was very effective, along with some of the other politicians and some of the military
02:56people.
02:57They love this place.
02:58They love what it stands for, all the victories they've had here over the years.
03:02So I want to thank Governor Gretchen Whitmer for bringing it also to our attention very strongly.
03:17And, you know, I'm not supposed to do that.
03:19She's a Democrat.
03:20They say, don't do that.
03:21Don't have her here.
03:22No, she's going to be here.
03:23She's done a very good job, frankly.
03:25And she was very much involved with the Republicans.
03:29They worked together on saving it.
03:31And it was not easy.
03:32So I want to thank you very much, Gretchen.
03:35Good job.
03:37Michigan House Speaker Matt Hall worked with Gretchen and everybody else.
03:41Thank you, Matt.
03:42Great job.
03:43You're doing, too.
03:44John James, as you know, is right now working on the great, big, beautiful deal.
03:50I said, do me a favor, John, just stay back there and let's get your vote.
03:54Let's not worry about this today.
03:56But John was fantastic, as were all of the other representatives that you have that are
04:03right now in Congress working very, very, very hard, actually.
04:07And Michigan Senate Republican Leader Eric Nesbitt.
04:11Thank you very much, Eric.
04:12Thank you very much.
04:13Great job.
04:14You've done a great job.
04:16But I want to thank all of the people that I just mentioned.
04:20But in particular, you know, when I look at the House members, they have been calling me all the time.
04:27We've got to get it done.
04:29And they worked along with Gretchen and some others.
04:32And you're going to be very happy with what I have to say right now.
04:37I also want to thank Michigan's tremendous Republican delegation, the whole delegation, the whole state, because they're back in Washington and they're helping our congressmen.
04:50And they're helping us get the votes that we need, because I think if we get it, we have the biggest tax cut in history.
04:57And if we don't get it, you have the biggest tax increase.
05:00And for that, I will blame the Democrats, because we probably won't get any votes from Democrats.
05:05Only not for any reason other than with them.
05:08We're Republicans and the Democrats tend not to vote any time we vote.
05:12It's the whole thing is so crazy, but it'll be the biggest tax increase in history if we don't get it.
05:19And that's why the Republicans can do it.
05:22But they have to stick together.
05:23And I think they are, from what I understand, really sticking together.
05:26I want to thank also Speaker of the House, Mike Johnson and John Thune, leaders John Thune.
05:34They have been working together and with the senators and the Congress, men and women.
05:39And I think they've got something that's really, it's big league and it's very important.
05:44Biggest, the biggest bill ever, if we get it done, and I think we will.
05:49For decades, Selfridge Air National Guard Base has stood as a crucial pillar of North American air defense.
05:56Just 20 miles north of Detroit, where you're going to have a lot of car factories opening very soon, by the way, I might add.
06:03With access to the largest military airspace complex east of the Mississippi, Selfridge is tightly integrated with the National All-Domain Warfighting Center.
06:14This airfield saw its first military takeoff all the way back in 1917.
06:20Can you believe that?
06:22Wow.
06:23Wouldn't that have been a shame to close this great history for something else that wouldn't be as good?
06:28The Tuskegee Airmen trained here during World War II and generations of Michigan patriots have served here with great distinction.
06:37Unfortunately, that proud legacy was put at risk by the retirement of the key aircraft based here, in particular the A-10 Thunderbolt II Warthog,
06:48which I hear is an incredible plane.
06:51I hear is an incredible plane.
06:53It's too bad.
06:54It's a long time.
06:55It's been up there.
06:56I said, why don't we save it?
06:58I actually said that last time, and we did save it.
07:01I said that in my last term, and we did save it, but now it's coming to an end.
07:06But I hear the Warthog is incredible.
07:09We have support aircraft and also the KC-135 Stratotankers.
07:18In recent years, many in Michigan have feared for the future of the base.
07:23They've been calling everybody, but the only one that mattered was Trump.
07:28They called Trump, and we got it done, which represents $850 million in economic impact across the state of Michigan,
07:39and probably it could be much more than that as we expand it out,
07:43and creates thousands and thousands of good and important jobs, both in the military and civilian jobs.
07:50So, Gretchen, that's a big economic — you're not going to have too many economic development jobs like that.
07:56It's great.
07:57But today, I've come in person to lay to rest any doubts about Selfridge's future and the vital role it'll play in our national defense.
08:07As Commander-in-Chief, I'm proud to announce that very soon we will replace the retiring A-10 Warthogs
08:15with 21 brand-new F-15EX Eagle II fighter jets, the best in the world, and fresh off the line.
08:26And they have an expression, you know what that means, fresh off the line.
08:50That means they are brand new. They've never been anywhere. This is where they're going to be for a long time.
08:55And I saw one of them. It flew over my head, and I said,
08:58what the hell is that? That plane has serious power.
09:02So this is the best there is anywhere in the world — the F-15EX Eagle II.
09:08This will keep Selfridge at the cutting edge of Northern American air power.
09:15My administration will also continue with plans to replace the outgoing KC-135s and KC-46 Pegasus aircraft to continue that important refueling mission.
09:27And they'll be restocked with brand-new, top-of-the-line refuelers.
09:33For generations, the men and women of Selfridge have always been here, and they've always been for us.
09:39Whether you're Republican or you're Democrat, they've always been for us. They've been for America.
09:43And under the Trump administration, we're going to be there for you.
09:47The previous administration was willing to surrender Air National Guard fighter units across the country by retiring aircraft that were not being replaced.
09:57We are replacing. But under the Trump administration, we're correcting that injustice.
10:02And that starts right here in Michigan, where we have a big commitment to Michigan and to the state even beyond this.
10:09This is an exciting time for the United States military since November.
10:13Enlistment numbers for every branch of the armed forces have surged. Recruitment is now the highest it's been in 39 years.
10:22Now, if you remember that you better hold on to those jobs or somebody will take them.
10:28Somebody will take those jobs so fast. Hold on to those jobs. Don't leave that job.
10:33Who would have thought? Because prior to November 5th, which is Election Day, I was hearing that recruitment was so bad.
10:41It was so impossible. It was hard to get people. And this goes not only for the armed forces, for the police, for firemen.
10:48People are proud of our country again. Big difference. But we had the worst numbers that we've ever had virtually.
10:55We couldn't get anybody. And now we're overstocked. We have waiting lists of people wanting to sign up and be with the military.
11:02They're proud of our country again. And I'll be supporting a record setting $1 trillion investment in our national defense.
11:09We're going to go $1 trillion, the largest in the world, largest ever in our country.
11:15But no other countries invested that much. We have a $1 trillion budget for military this year.
11:22And we have tremendous plans, including increasing the scope of Selfridge.
11:29And I recently signed an order to begin construction of the Golden Dome missile defense shield to protect our homeland from missile attack.
11:36We're going to call it the Golden Dome. We had the Iron Dome.
11:39But somehow, Gretchen, Golden Dome sounds better to me. I don't know. Maybe it's not.
11:45What do you like better? Golden Dome or Iron Dome? What do you like better? Golden? Let's have a vote. Golden Dome.
11:52Oh, no. I think we're in trouble.
11:59How about the Iron Dome? Good. Keep it. That's good.
12:04Because we made all the changes already. It'll be a little bit tough.
12:07Even the renderings look very golden, but beautiful.
12:10No, it's going to be incredible. The latest and the greatest.
12:12A lot of it's going to be made in Michigan.
12:14A lot of it is going to be made the Golden Dome.
12:17You know, other countries have it. In particular, Israel has it.
12:20And we have a much more advance than theirs is very good.
12:24We helped do it. We did it.
12:26But we have an advanced version now that really is incredible what it does.
12:31We had a case study of 169 out of 169.
12:38Every one of them just shut down.
12:40And I think we're entitled to it, don't you?
12:43I think we're entitled to it as a country.
12:45America's military will soon be stronger and more powerful than ever before.
12:49And Selfridge Air National Guard base will remain at the center of the action.
12:54And I just want to say we're building some of the greatest submarines and various other ships.
13:01But submarines in particular, we have a monopoly on great submarines.
13:05We're building the greatest in the world, most powerful machine ever built.
13:09And we're doing some things that are just incredible.
13:13In one way you hate to do it, but in another way you really have no choice.
13:17And we're fighting very hard on the China front and the Russia front with Ukraine and what's happening in the Middle East and a lot of good things.
13:25You're going to be hearing a lot of good things.
13:27It's a shame when I left office not so long ago.
13:32We had no wars.
13:33We defeated ISIS in three weeks.
13:35It was supposed to take five years, they told me.
13:38Sir, it's going to take about five years.
13:40We did it in three weeks.
13:41Raisin Cain, he's now your top.
13:44You know, he's your top person.
13:47He's the head of the Joint Chiefs.
13:49And I did that because he was the one.
13:52He said, sir, we can do it in three weeks.
13:54I said, three weeks?
13:55They told me five years.
13:57No, sir.
13:58You can do it in three weeks, sir.
14:01And I said, let's see if you can do it.
14:03And he did it.
14:04He had a little time left over, actually.
14:06And ISIS was gone, totally defeated.
14:09And he's the man we wanted.
14:10That's the man.
14:11I said, if I do this again, I'm going to put that guy in charge because he did things that nobody else was able to do.
14:17And nobody else even thought it or even suggested.
14:20So I'm very proud to have him head up the whole military operation along with Pete and some other great people.
14:29So I just want to say that Michigan, it's been my great honor to be here.
14:33I've had tremendous success in Michigan.
14:35Not all Republicans have, but I have.
14:37And not just this time either.
14:40We had tremendous.
14:41We did tremendously well in 2020 and we did incredibly well in 2016.
14:47In 2016, they said it couldn't be won.
14:50You know, it couldn't be won, but we won and we won by a lot.
14:53So it's a special place.
14:55And I don't forget.
14:56I don't forget my friends in Michigan's been my friend.
14:59And I want to just thank everybody here.
15:01I want to congratulate you, actually, because a lot of people wanted this to happen to their neck of the woods.
15:07But it's happening for you.
15:08So congratulations and God bless you all.
15:11God bless our military and God bless America.
15:14Thank you very much.
15:15Congratulations, everybody.
15:16Congratulations.
15:41Only because the Commander-in-Chief invited me.
15:44Mr. President, thank you for restoring the warrior ethos inside our formations,
15:48for rebuilding our military, reestablishing deterrence around the world,
15:52and making Americans proud to wear the uniform.
15:55That recruiting surge we're seeing right now is because they know they have a Commander-in-Chief that has their back.
16:01That's my message to these men and women every single place we go.
16:04All I ever wanted when I was in combat was to know that my Commander had my back, no matter what.
16:10And when Donald J. Trump, that Commander has your back.
16:15And that means something to the men and women of America.
16:17And that's why we're seeing a record surge in recruiting.
16:19That's why we're locking down our southern border.
16:21That's why our enemies know we mean business.
16:23We always know we mean business because we have a Commander-in-Chief that has our back, and he has the back of this base as well.
16:30God bless you all. Thank you.
16:32Well, I hadn't planned to speak, but on behalf of all the military men and women who serve our country,
16:51and serve so honorably on behalf of the State of Michigan, I am really damn happy we're here to celebrate this recapitalization at Selfridge.
17:00It's crucial for the Michigan economy. It's crucial for the men and women here, for our homeland security, and our future.
17:06So, thank you. I am so, so grateful that this announcement was made today.
17:11And I appreciate all the work. Thank you.
17:22Well, thank you. Thank you, Mr. President.
17:24It's because of your leadership this is happening.
17:27No one else could save Selfridge. We've tried for decades.
17:31It took you, Mr. President.
17:33This is why the people of Michigan elected you, sir.
17:36You have not forgetting us.
17:38This is the first time in decades where we can all say Selfridge is winning.
17:43We are winning because of you, President Trump.
17:46And I know all of these troops here will not let you down with this new fighter mission,
17:50which will keep Selfridge Air National Guard base thriving for the next 30 to 40 years.
17:56Thank you, Mr. President, for remembering us and keeping your commitment when we saw you in Washington a few weeks ago.
18:01Thank you, sir.
18:02Well, Mr. President, thank you for coming to Macomb County.
18:16Thank you for coming to Michigan.
18:18And thank you for providing another important service of the F-15X.
18:24This means that these folks are going to be continuing on the mission for America for the coming decades.
18:30Because of your leadership, America's back again.
18:33Macomb's back again.
18:35Michigan's back again.
18:37And Selfridge will be leading the way.
18:39Thank you, Mr. President, for showing that leadership.
18:40Thank you, Mr. President, for showing that leadership.
