01:48From ABC News World Headquarters in New York, this is World News Tonight with David Muir.
01:59Good evening. We are back from the Vatican tonight, and we thank you. I know many of you tuned in over the weekend, and it's great to start another week with all of you at home.
02:05We do begin tonight with this serious threat. The tornado watch is up at this hour. Multiple states and several major cities on alert tonight.
02:12It's all part of a dangerous system. Sixty million Americans on alert, stretching from Texas all the way up to the northeast.
02:18Tonight, the severe threat across the upper Midwest, then shifting east tomorrow. The greatest threat from Cincinnati to Pittsburgh to upstate New York.
02:26This same system spawning multiple tornadoes in the plains, this one in Hyannis, Nebraska. Powerful enough to derail this massive train nearby.
02:33ABC chief meteorologist Ginger Zee tracking it all. She's live in Minnesota tonight. She's south of Minneapolis. And Ginger, what are you most concerned about tonight?
02:40Most concerned about this tornado-worn storm that's about 35 miles to my north, David, because it is pointed at Interstate 35.
02:47The next half hour, it'll be crossing that interstate as so many people are hitting the road at the end of their day.
02:53Now, that's just one of the many issues in this ugly line. We just seconds ago got a severe thunderstorm warning, but we're all from Rice Lake in Eau Claire, Wisconsin,
03:00back down through Des Moines into Topeka, Kansas in a tornado watch for the next couple of hours, really till 11 p.m. tonight.
03:07Oklahoma City down to San Angelo. Also, this is a really wide-ranging system, so I wanted to time it out for you.
03:13The next few hours are the worst of it, in southeastern Minnesota at least, and then it moves into western Wisconsin.
03:18See how it gets to La Crosse? We stopped the clock there, 10, 11 p.m.
03:22But not until 1 a.m. does Green Bay, Wisconsin start to see these damaging winds come through.
03:26And you could have embedded tornadoes throughout the night, so well after the sun goes down.
03:30Quick look at tomorrow. Cleveland, Columbus, Pittsburgh, Syracuse, and Buffalo in the enhanced.
03:35Wichita falls up to Oklahoma City. Not only, David, will they have damaging wind, but they could also have flash flooding tomorrow and tomorrow night.
03:41Yes, spring always brings this unsettled weather. Ginger Z live south of Minneapolis tonight.
03:45Ginger, thank you. We'll see you on GMA.
03:47The other major story this Monday night, the U.S. Navy reporting an F-18 fighter jet plunged off the deck of the USS Harry Truman aircraft carrier
03:54and then right into the Red Sea.
03:56The jet was reportedly being towed out of the hangar bay when the crew lost control.
04:00The $70 million fighter jet sinking into the sea, and tonight the question surrounding how this happened.
04:05Here's Trevor Ault.
04:07Tonight, the stunning fall from an aircraft carrier.
04:10A $70 million fighter jet going overboard in the Red Sea, crew members jumping to safety.
04:16The Navy says an F-18 fighter jet was being towed out of a hangar on the USS Truman when the crew lost control.
04:23The plane and the towing tractor both tumbling overboard, sinking to the bottom of the sea.
04:28One crew member was on the plane, a second on the tractor, both of them escaping at the last moment.
04:33One sailor suffering a minor injury.
04:36Officials say it's unclear whether enemy fire played a role or other factors like human error or mechanical malfunction.
04:42The Truman has been protecting commercial shipping in the Red Sea from ongoing attacks by Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen,
04:49the carrier coming under fire several times.
04:52A U.S. official tells ABC News initial reports suggest a sudden movement of the carrier because of Houthi fire
04:58might have contributed to the crew losing control of the F-18, but those reports remain unconfirmed.
05:05Earlier this year, the Truman collided with another ship.
05:08The commanding officer was then fired.
05:10And back in 2022, this video from a naval investigation shows the moment an F-35 crashed upon landing on the USS Carl Vinson.
05:18A fireball erupting, the jets sliding off the carrier and into the South China Sea.
05:24David, this is the decommissioned USS Intrepid.
05:27The Truman is a far larger aircraft carrier, and officials say the chances of recovering that $70 million fighter jet are quite low,
05:34as that is an active conflict area, David.
05:36Yes, so many questions about this tonight, Trevor.
05:38We turn now to President Trump, who marks 100 days in office tomorrow.
05:42Tonight here, the new ABC News poll.
05:43What Americans are saying about the economy, inflation, immigration, and President Trump's promise to end the war in Ukraine on day one.
05:50Here's Rachel Scott.
05:53Tonight, on the eve of marking his first 100 days in office, President Trump facing the reality that while he was elected,
06:00in large part because of the economy and inflation.
06:02Starting on day one, we will end inflation.
06:06We will end inflation and we will make America affordable again.
06:10He has now presided over the worst first 100 days in the stock market since Richard Nixon.
06:16Tonight, the new ABC News Washington Post Ipsos poll on the first 100 days shows the president's approval rating is 39 percent,
06:24the lowest 100-day approval rating of any president in 80 years.
06:2872 percent say that his economic policies will likely cause a recession in short term.
06:3373 percent say the economy is in bad shape.
06:36And 53 percent say it's gotten worse since he took office.
06:40President Trump's tariffs leading to global uncertainty.
06:43And his 145 percent tariffs on China remain in place.
06:48The president says he has a good relationship with President Xi of China, but that he hasn't reached out to him.
06:53Instead telling time, Xi has personally reached out to him, something China denies.
06:58I asked the president, when did you talk?
07:00You said that you have spoken to President Xi?
07:03When did that happen?
07:05And China says it hasn't happened.
07:07I spoke to him numerous times.
07:08Other reporters pressing, too.
07:10Have you spoken to him since the tariffs?
07:13When did you last week?
07:14I don't want to comment on that, but I've spoken to him many times.
07:18But China today once again insisting that hasn't happened.
07:21Today, a spokesperson saying,
07:22As far as I know, there have not been any calls between the two presidents recently.
07:26Adding, let me make it clear one more time that China and the U.S. are not engaged in any consultation or negotiations on tariffs.
07:34After already warning, the United States should not confuse the public.
07:38On immigration, the other major issue in the November election, President Trump getting his highest marks.
07:44But they come with new questions tonight.
07:46Forty-six percent of Americans approve of his immigration policies, but 48 percent say his actions deporting undocumented migrants have gone too far.
07:55Tonight, the White House defending how they've handled mass deportations.
07:59After three children who are U.S. citizens, ages two, four, and seven, were deported to Honduras, along with their mothers, after routine checks by ICE.
08:08The president's borders are Tom Homan claiming the parents were given a choice.
08:12What we did is remove children with their mothers who requested their children depart with them.
08:17This was a parental decision. Parenting 101.
08:21Having a U.S. citizen child does not make you immune from our laws.
08:26The ACLU says the four-year-old suffers from a rare form of cancer.
08:30On the two-year-old sent to Honduras, a federal judge appointed by Trump,
08:34saying he has a strong suspicion the administration deported the two-year-old,
08:38whose mother is currently pregnant, with no meaningful process.
08:41And the ACLU claiming the parents were never given a choice,
08:45that the parents did not have the opportunity to coordinate with caretakers or legal representatives.
08:51In a new interview with The Atlantic, the president was asked,
08:54what would happen if the administration accidentally deported the wrong person or an American citizen?
08:59The president saying, quote,
09:01let me tell you that nothing will ever be perfect in this world.
09:04And on Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the promise from candidate Trump.
09:08Before I even arrive at the Oval Office, I will have the disastrous war between Russia and Ukraine settled.
09:15It will be settled. It will take me no longer than one day.
09:19Tonight, the war is still raging.
09:2146 percent of Americans said Trump's approach to Russia is too friendly.
09:25The president requesting this meeting with Ukraine's President Zelensky at the Vatican,
09:29ahead of Pope Francis's funeral this weekend.
09:31Though it's still unclear how and when this war will end and what concessions, if any, will come from Vladimir Putin.
09:38With so much focus on the president's interactions with our allies tonight,
09:42Canadians will be heading to the polls,
09:44an election that will decide how Canada responds to the president's ongoing tariff threat
09:49and its push to make Canada the 51st state.
09:51All of that could end up helping the liberal prime minister, Mark Carney,
09:55who took over after Justin Trudeau stepped down and has vowed to confront President Trump head on.
10:00David?
10:00A lot of eyes on that Canadian election tonight.
