01:54The Disney honor, the tears and the laughter tonight from ABC News World Headquarters in
02:03New York.
02:04This is World News Tonight with David Muir.
02:09Good evening.
02:10It is great to be back with all of you at home.
02:11We have several developing headlines at this hour.
02:13The new tropical storm that has just formed in the Atlantic tonight.
02:16Also the dramatic shift in the race for the White House, the new polls and some key battlegrounds.
02:20And we'll show you.
02:21But we do begin tonight with the earthquake rocking Los Angeles, the four point four quake
02:25just north of downtown L.A.
02:27Tonight, authorities warning millions to be prepared for aftershocks.
02:30And this was the moment on ESPN's NBA Today.
02:33They were actually live on the air as we have a bit of an earthquake here in Los Angeles.
02:38So we're just going to make sure that our studio lights, everything stays safe, everything
02:41they were live from their Los Angeles studio when the quake struck anchor Malika Andrews
02:45paused to see if everyone was safe.
02:47They're handling it very well.
02:48Police at Wilson High School evacuated to the athletic field today was the first day
02:52of classes for the L.A. schools, the country's second largest school system, a broken pipe
02:57at Pasadena City Hall, sending water cascading down.
02:59And of course, tonight, that concern for possible aftershocks.
03:02Now, ABC's Melissa Adan leading us off.
03:04She's in Pasadena tonight.
03:07Tonight, millions bracing for aftershocks.
03:16After a significant earthquake rattled Southern California, the magnitude four point four
03:24quake centered under the Highland Park neighborhood of Los Angeles around 1220 p.m. local time.
03:30And it was felt all over L.A.
03:32It was a jolt.
03:34And then the building just started to shake violently as we have a bit of an earthquake
03:39here in Los Angeles.
03:40And that moment when ESPN's Malika Andrews was on the air talking basketball to me, that's
03:45an earthquake.
03:46That's an earthquake.
03:47Whoa, whoa.
03:48That is a real one, guys.
03:50The radio studio also broadcasting live.
03:53How big was that one?
03:55The scientists at the U.S. Geological Survey ducking for cover themselves.
03:59This is my first quake in seismology.
04:01It's a pretty good jolt.
04:03Nothing was knocked over, but I think almost everybody felt it.
04:06The quake bursting a pipe near the top of Pasadena City Hall, where someone was briefly
04:11stuck in an elevator.
04:13Our crews discovered that a sprinkler head at the very top of the rotunda, actually the
04:19piping broke, causing a water flow.
04:23Authorities evacuating students out of this middle school on the first day of school for
04:26many LASD students.
04:29The L.A. Fire Department activating earthquake mode, fanning out into neighborhoods all over
04:33the city, inspecting for damage.
04:36David, so far no substantial reports of any significant damage or injuries.
04:40Authorities now, the city of L.A. and L.A. County officials are monitoring and watching
04:45for any possible aftershocks.
04:46David?
04:47All right, Melissa Adan in Pasadena for us tonight.
04:49Melissa, thank you.
04:50And of course, from the earthquake to this new tropical threat in the Atlantic at this
04:53hour, it is now officially Tropical Storm Ernesto forming late today, warnings tonight
04:57for Puerto Rico and other islands.
04:59Let's get right to Chief Meteorologist Ginger Zee back with us on a Monday night with a
05:02potential track of this and when it could become a hurricane.
05:04Hey, Ginger.
05:05Hey, David.
05:07Hey, David.
05:08Ernesto formed about 10 days before the average fifth named storm of the season, but it's
05:12still more than 900 miles to the east southeast of San Juan, Puerto Rico.
05:17But it's moving fast west at 28 miles per hour.
05:20This group of thunderstorms that is now Ernesto is going to get to that lesser until he's
05:24pretty quickly the northern part of it, at least.
05:26Tropical storm warnings include Puerto Rico, St. Martin, St. Vincent.
05:29We're talking about three to six inches of rain widespread and up to 10 locally.
05:34Then we'll turn the path to the north.
05:36And it's by Thursday that we see it becoming a hurricane, at least by then.
05:39It could happen a little earlier than that and then takes a track toward Bermuda as we
05:42get into the weekend.
05:43So that'd be Saturday afternoon.
05:45That path is wide, but it still stays east of the United States, mostly because of that
05:50trough.
05:51So these steering factors are going to help keep it away.
05:52We will, however, David, going through the weekend, have big rip currents and high surf.
05:56OK, Ginger Zee, we love seeing this spaghetti model well off the east coast.
06:00Let's hope it stays there.
06:01Ginger, thank you.
06:02We see the wind there tonight as well.
06:03In the meantime, we turn to the race for the White House tonight, just 85 days until
06:06Election Day, one week now until the Democratic National Convention.
06:10And tonight, new polls and some key battlegrounds showing a dramatic shift in the race.
06:14Vice President Kamala Harris now ahead of Donald Trump in three key states, Pennsylvania,
06:18Michigan and Wisconsin, 50 to 46 within the margin of error.
06:22The vice president drawing major crowds among the battleground stops, 15,000 turning out
06:26in Detroit, about 15,000 in Phoenix, too.
06:30Tonight, Donald Trump now falsely claiming that some of the images of those crowds are
06:34being generated by artificial intelligence.
06:37Here's ABC senior White House correspondent Celina Wang.
06:40Tonight, new battleground polling shows a radically changed race for the White House
06:46with 85 days to go.
06:48Vice President Kamala Harris now leading former President Donald Trump in three crucial Rust
06:53Belt states, states where Trump and President Biden were virtually tied with Trump having
06:59the edge.
07:00Now, in Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin, Harris leading Trump among likely voters 50
07:06to 46 percent within the margin of error.
07:10Harris and running mate Minnesota Governor Tim Walz fresh off their first week together
07:15blitzing the battlegrounds.
07:17We have the momentum and I know exactly what we are up against.
07:24Her campaign blasting Trump for not doing the same, saying Vice President Harris is
07:29the only candidate out on the campaign trail in swing states fighting to win this election.
07:34OK, by us.
07:42That new polling also showing enthusiasm for the Democratic ticket has skyrocketed since
07:48Harris became the nominee.
07:50Supporters showing up by the thousands to Harris walls rallies.
07:53The campaign says 14000 people attended the rally in Philadelphia, while at least 15000
07:59were in the crowds in Phoenix and Detroit.
08:02Trump now falsely suggesting this image of the crowd in Detroit was produced by artificial
08:07intelligence posting on social media.
08:11Has anyone noticed that Kamala cheated at the airport?
08:14There was nobody at the plane and she ate it and showed a massive crowd of so-called
08:19followers, but they didn't exist.
08:22It's just not true.
08:23Video and images from these events clearly show the crowds the Harris campaign is reporting.
08:29And while Harris's campaign says they've been in the battlegrounds, Donald Trump sitting
08:33down with Elon Musk for a conversation on X, formerly known as Twitter.
08:38The live stream delayed, Musk said, due to a cyber attack.
08:43Trump commenting on the million plus users listening.
08:45We have to consider it an honor, but congratulations on breaking every record in the book tonight.
08:51Trump going after Harris for vowing to eliminate taxes on tips for service and hospitality
08:57workers, an idea he first proposed.
09:00Because when I get to office, we are going to not charge taxes on tips.
09:06People making tips.
09:08The former president accusing Harris of copying his idea, saying this was a Trump idea.
09:13She has no ideas.
09:14She can only steal from me.
09:16Vice President Harris taking it a step further, saying not only should taxes on tips be eliminated,
09:22but the minimum wage should be raised, too.
09:25When I am president, we will continue our fight for working families of America, including
09:37to raise the minimum wage and eliminate taxes on tips for service and hospitality workers.
09:46It's going to be a key economic issue moving forward.
09:50Let's bring in Selena Wang at the White House tonight, Selena.
09:52We're now just one week away from the Democratic National Convention, of course, kicks off
09:56next Monday in Chicago.
09:57What do we know about who will speak at the convention?
09:59Well, David, the Harris campaign is hoping to ride this momentum all the way to the convention.
10:05Sources say that former Presidents Barack Obama, Bill Clinton and former Secretary of
10:09State Hillary Clinton are expected to speak there, as well as President Biden.
10:14And today, the White House saying that President Biden is looking forward to the convention
10:17and talking directly to the American people about the stakes of this election.
10:22David.
10:23Selena Wang at the White House for us.
10:24Selena, thank you.
10:25ABC News, of course, will cover the Democratic Convention in Chicago next week, beginning
10:28Monday in primetime on ABC News Live and right here on the network.
10:32We do have one more campaign note tonight.
10:33The FBI now saying it is investigating alleged hack of Trump campaign emails.
10:38The Trump campaign has said they were hacked by, quote, foreign sources with the intent
10:42to interfere in the upcoming election.
10:44Microsoft confirming a group run by Iranian intelligence hacked the email account of a
10:48former senior adviser of a presidential campaign.
10:51Microsoft did not identify the specific campaign.
10:54Sources now tell ABC News the Biden Harris campaign was also targeted as well.
10:59Overseas tonight, Israel is on high alert, bracing for an attack that could soon come.
11:04Iran doubling down on its threat to retaliate against Israel, the U.S. moving a guided missile
11:08submarine into the region, a rare announcement of the location of a U.S. submarine.
11:13ABC's Tom Sufi Burrage in Tel Aviv tonight.
11:17Tonight an attack from Iran or its proxies on Israel now expected this week, say U.S.
11:23officials.
11:24Those officials cautiously optimistic Iran will limit the scope of its actions to avoid
11:28significant escalation.
11:30With the White House saying it has to be prepared for what could be a, quote, significant
11:35set of attacks.
11:38Iran and Hezbollah doubling down on their threats to retaliate for two high profile
11:42assassinations in Tehran and Beirut.
11:46The IDF now on high alert as the U.S. moves more military assets to the Middle East, revealing
11:51a guided missile submarine whose location is normally top secret is heading to the region.
11:57What we're focused on is continuing to deescalate diplomatically.
12:03Our hope and our intent is for to make sure that an attack doesn't happen.
12:09Overnight Hezbollah probing Israeli defenses, firing dozens of rockets into northern Israel,
12:14most of them intercepted by the Iron Dome.
12:18Israeli blood banks and fortified underground hospitals preparing for an attack.
12:22It comes as Hamas, another ally of Iran, signals it won't enter into a new round of
12:27Gaza ceasefire and hostage talks because it says it already accepted a deal weeks ago.
12:34And tonight, the IDF reacting to a Hamas claim that Hamas's own guards in two separate incidents
12:40shot and killed a hostage and seriously wounded two other people being held captive.
12:45The IDF saying it has no intelligence to refute or confirm Hamas's claims.
12:52And David, Israel has banned all its air force pilots from leaving the country.
12:56The IDF still not issuing emergency guidelines for civilians.
12:59And tonight, a U.S. official confirming the U.S. is sending back channel messages to Iran.
13:05David.
13:06Tom Sufi Burrage in Tel Aviv for us tonight.
13:08Tom, thank you.
13:09Now, the war in Ukraine.
13:10It's a night for the first time.
13:11President Zelensky now confirming that a Ukrainian military offensive is underway some 18 miles
13:17inside Russia.
13:19Thousands of Russians have been forced to evacuate and Vladimir Putin has been forced
13:22to call in reinforcements.
13:24Here's our chief foreign correspondent, Ian panel tonight.
13:27Tonight, the surprise Ukrainian offensive inside Russia expanding into another region.
13:34Video circulating online showing troops raising the blue and yellow flag of Ukraine in occupied
13:39villages.
13:40The commander in chief of Ukrainian forces tonight claiming they've taken around 380
13:44square miles of Russian territory.
13:47Some estimate they could be as deep as 18 miles inside Russia.
13:52Thousands of Ukrainian troops are believed to have crossed into two border areas in the
13:56last week around Kursk and now Belgorod, two places used to launch attacks on Ukraine.
14:04This is the moment a Ukrainian missile came crashing down in Kursk after being intercepted,
14:09seen in video online.
14:10Fierce firefights have been reported as Russia urgently sends in defensive units attacking
14:15with drones and aircraft.
14:18Over 100,000 residents forced to flee their homes in a mirror image of the Russian occupation
14:23of Ukrainian towns and villages.
14:27President Zelensky confirming the operation which has been shrouded in secrecy.
14:31Today, a rattle Putin holding an emergency meeting, ordering the defense ministry to
14:37push to kick the enemy out of our territory.
14:40Facts are few, but this is the biggest occupation of Russian territory by a foreign army since
14:45the Second World War.
14:47Russia claiming American and NATO military equipment is being used, which would be a
14:51potential breach of agreements, but no evidence is being offered.
14:56David, Vladimir Putin claims that Ukraine is trying to improve its negotiating position
15:01in any future talks.
15:02In other words, trying to swap land for land.
15:05But it's an embarrassing blow for the Kremlin and I think two key questions tonight.
15:09One, how far can Ukraine go?
15:11How much territory can it take?
15:12And two, can it hold on to it?
15:15We're watching this closely.
15:16Ian Pannel with us tonight.
15:17Thank you, Ian.
15:18Now to the investigation of that deadly passenger plane plunging and crashing in Brazil.
15:22They have now recovered the black boxes and engines.
15:25The dramatic video you'll remember capturing the final moments, the twin engine turboprop
15:28plane spinning, falling 17,000 feet in just one minute.
15:33All 62 passengers and crew on board were killed.
15:35Officials say the pilots did not call for help.
15:38In Greece tonight, a major wildfire just north of Athens is racing toward the capital, forcing
15:42mass evacuations.
15:44The fast-moving fire breaking out 24 hours ago, fueled by strong winds, more than 30,000
15:48people forced to leave their homes.
15:50Smoke darkening the sky over Athens' famous monuments with temperatures set to reach 100
15:54degrees.
15:55Extraordinary images.

16:12common?
16:13It was quite an honor, and you'll see it.
16:16Tonight authorities are investigating a gas leak blamed for a deadly house explosion just
16:19outside Baltimore.
16:20A homeowner and building contractor for Baltimore Gas and Electric already at the house.
16:25They were killed in the blast.
16:26That contractor was there for an electrical problem.
16:29Firefighters were on the way after reports of a gas leak.
16:31The house exploded, though, before they got there.

16:58It should be available here in the U.S. within eight weeks, a welcome change.
17:03When we come back tonight, Harrison Ford, Angela Bassett, Jamie Lee Curtis, Kelly Ripa.
17:07The big honor in a moment here.
17:11Finally tonight, the new Disney Legends.
17:14It was a star-studded event, this year's Disney Legends, 14 names you'll know, 14 legends
17:20known for their iconic work.
17:22Disney's CEO, Bob Iger.
17:24It's presented as a celebration of talent, a recognition of achievement, and above all
17:30else, a sincere expression of deep gratitude on our part.
17:36Here's Angela Bassett, honored.
