02:20Good evening and thanks for joining us on this Sunday.
02:22I'm Whit Johnson.
02:23We begin tonight with a deadly scene during a street festival in Vancouver, Canada.
02:28A vehicle plowing into a crowd, gathering for a celebration of Filipino culture.
02:33The horrific images coming in.
02:34First responders racing to the victims.
02:37At least 11 people killed and 20 were hurt.
02:39Many can be seen lying on the ground.
02:42Other people in the crowd offering aid.
02:44Officials say a man who is known to authorities is solely responsible and is under arrest.
02:50They do not believe this was an act of terrorism.
02:53And a warning tonight, some of these images are disturbing.
02:56ABC's chief national correspondent, Matt Gutman, leads us off from Vancouver.
03:02Tonight, Canada reeling after a vehicle plowed through a Vancouver festival,
03:06leaving at least 11 dead and 20 others injured.
03:09I and all Canadians were shocked, devastated and heartbroken.
03:15Authorities say shortly after 8 p.m., a man drove into a crowd of people attending the
03:19Lapu-Lapu Day festival, which honors Filipino heritage.
03:23There's a car that went just through the whole street and just hitting everyone.
03:29And everyone is panicking.
03:31Everyone is screaming.
03:32Disturbing video showing victims strewn on the ground, dozens of injured lining the block.
03:38So it was really sad.
03:39They were all twisted bodies, some with head injuries, two kids that I saw a baby, and then
03:45also probably an 11-year-old child.
03:47Some of the victims carried away for treatment by first responders.
03:50We saw people crawling out, crying, and, like, holding each other.
03:55People were unconscious and poor.
03:57And the police officers were trying their hardest to revive them.
04:05It was really hard to see.
04:07The suspect reportedly fleeing this badly damaged black SUV, but was wrangled by the crowd at the
04:13scene.
04:13Police say he is a 30-year-old man they say was known to them.
04:17The crowd immediately called police.
04:20We then took custody of the subject.
04:23Authorities say they do not believe this was an act of terrorism.
04:26The person we have in custody does have a significant history of interactions with police
04:32and health care professionals related to mental health.
04:38That incident occurring minutes after Apple to App wrapped his set at the street festival.
04:42The founding member of the Black Eyed Peas singing their hit song, I Got a Feeling.
04:47Vancouver City Councilor Pete Fry sharing this photo earlier in the day, shaken by the incident.
04:52I'm pretty choked up.
04:54I don't even know what to say.
04:57This was a great day.
04:59Wonderful event.
05:00Huge community event.
05:01The festival taking place just days before Canada's federal election.
05:05Hours before the tragedy, the leader of the New Democratic Party, Jagmeet Singh, addressing
05:10the crowd.
05:10Later tweeting, our thoughts are with the victims and their families, cancelling all campaign
05:15events today.
05:16On the eve of what could be the most consequential elections in Canada in generations, Canada's
05:21prime minister saying that this is every family's nightmare.
05:25Now, authorities are saying that there are critically wounded among the victims and that
05:29the death toll could rise.
05:31At this point, they still believe that that suspect acted alone.
05:34They're not releasing his identity until he's charged.
05:37Just an awful scene there in Vancouver.
05:39Matt Gutman, thank you.
05:40Now to the new round of severe weather.
05:42More than 50 million Americans on alert.
05:45Several reported tornadoes ripping through parts of Texas this weekend.
05:48A twister in Canyon, Texas, sending a camper into the air, eventually landing between two
05:53homes and deadly flash flooding in Oklahoma.
05:56Tonight, millions of Americans in the heartland, bracing for a significant tornado threat.
06:06Multiple twisters from a separate system striking the Texas panhandle Friday.
06:10South of Amarillo, Texas, an EF-1 twister with winds up to 110 miles per hour, damaging more
06:17than a dozen homes.
06:19Nat High, racing to protect his wife.
06:22Immediately, I pushed my wife off of the bed.
06:24I landed on top of her, right then and there, millisecond.
06:27Our bedroom window burst, exploded.
06:33Parts of Oklahoma inundated with more than five inches of rain Saturday.
06:38Flash flooding claiming the life of one person in Lawton, Oklahoma, after police say a vehicle
06:43drove into standing water.
06:45The upper Midwest now on alert for a major severe weather outbreak tomorrow.
06:49Again, can't emphasize enough to be sure to pay attention to watches and warnings issued
06:53tomorrow afternoon.
06:55While in the east, firefighters battling strong winds and dry conditions in southern New Jersey.
07:00The Jones Road wildfire scorching more than 23 square miles.
07:04Authorities believe it was intentionally started by a teenager.
07:08And Whit, parts of southern New Jersey are facing elevated fire danger, with authorities
07:12warning that these winds are causing already burned trees to fall, and that's creating serious
07:16hazards.
07:18Whit?
07:18Morgan Norwood, thanks so much.
07:20Let's get right to meteorologist Danny Beckstrom from our New York station, WABC.
07:24And Danny, this is a serious threat for the nation's heartland.
07:28Yeah, Whit, tomorrow's shaping up to be a dangerous day for so many in the upper Midwest.
07:32Take a look at the map.
07:33Strong storms expected from Texas up through the Great Lakes, with a severe outbreak possible
07:37from Kansas City to Duluth.
07:39Our greatest concern is the area highlighted in red, which includes Minneapolis, where strong
07:43tornadoes and very large hail are possible tomorrow.
07:46Timing it out, storms begin firing up tonight in the plains, bringing damaging wind and hail
07:50by sunrise Monday, a line of heavy rain across Minnesota.
07:54But that's just the first of several rounds that we're watching.
07:56The most intense storms are forecast tomorrow evening and a Monday night, so it's important
08:00to stay weather aware even after sunset.
08:02The threat for severe weather continues into Tuesday as the storm shifts east.
08:06Whit?
08:06Danny Beckstrom, thank you.
08:08To politics now, as President Trump approaches his 100th day in office, his approval ratings
08:13are sinking even on the issues he ran on, like the economy.
08:16Our new poll finds a majority of Americans think the economy is now worse than it was when
08:21he took office.
08:22And what many say about the likelihood of a recession.
08:25ABC News Senior White House Correspondent Selena Wang in Washington tonight.
08:30Tonight, Americans expressing broad dissatisfaction with the beginning of President Trump's second
08:36term in office.
08:37Trump's 100-day approval rating plummeting to the lowest of any president in the past 80
08:43years as he seeks to reshape the United States economy, government and role in the world.
08:48Fifty-five percent of respondents in this ABC News Washington Post-Ipsos poll say they
08:54disapprove of how Trump is handling his job so far.
08:57Trump's promises to boost the economy and lower prices were key to his election victory.
09:03I will instruct my cabinet that I expect results within the first 100 days or much sooner than
09:08that.
09:09But 72 percent now say they think it's very or somewhat likely that Trump's economic policies
09:15will cause a recession.
09:1673 percent say the economy is in bad shape and more than half say it's gotten worse since
09:23Trump took office.
09:24The International Monetary Fund warning Trump's tariffs on foreign imports and the resulting
09:29global trade war will drive up prices and slow down economic growth around the world.
09:35The administration now insisting short-term pain will be worth the ultimate goal, bringing
09:40manufacturing back to America.
09:42We're in this for the long term, and the important thing is that we are setting the fundamentals
09:47for a strong dollar, a strong economy, strong stock market.
09:52But Americans are also voicing concern beyond the economy.
09:5764 percent say he's going too far in trying to expand presidential powers, and 62 percent say
10:03they don't think his administration respects the rule of law.
10:06This as Trump tests the limits of presidential powers, challenging court orders, and attacking
10:12judges who have tried to check his authority on immigration policy.
10:16I don't see how judges can take that authority away from a president.
10:21And with President Trump is holding a rally in Michigan on Tuesday to mark the first 100
10:26days of his second term.
10:27But the president is urging Republican members of Congress to stay here in Washington, calling
10:32it a crucial week to advance his agenda around immigration and tax cuts.
10:37Meanwhile, tonight, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer is vowing that Democrats will resist the
10:43president's latest legislative push.
10:46Whit?
10:46Selena Wang, thank you.
10:48And tune in to ABC News on Tuesday when President Trump sits down for an exclusive interview with
10:52ABC News senior national correspondent Terry Moran to mark his first 100 days back in the
10:58White House.
10:58It all begins at 8 Eastern here on ABC.
11:02Next tonight, a day after Pope Francis was laid to rest, tens of thousands lining up to pay
11:07their respects at his tomb in Rome's Mary Major Basilica, many waiting hours to get a glimpse
11:13of the simple white marker that bears his name in Latin.
11:17ABC's Maggie Rooley joins us from Rome as the focus begins to shift to the future of the
11:21Catholic Church.
11:22Maggie?
11:23Hey, Whit.
11:24Yeah, today, tens of thousands of mourners waited in line to see the tomb of Pope Francis,
11:29a simple tomb inscribed with just one word, Franciscus.
11:33Now, among them, there were more than 100 cardinals who will now be turning their attention
11:37to the conclave.
11:38That's that highly orchestrated, secretive process to elect the next pope.
11:42Now, the earliest the conclave could start isn't until next Monday, May 5th.
11:46So, Whit, that means this next week, most of the world's cardinals are going to be right
11:50here in Vatican City.
11:51They'll be getting to know one another and preparing to elect the next pope.
11:55Now, Whit, this past weekend, it was incredible to witness just the outpouring of gratitude for
12:00Pope Francis, St. Peter's Square, and the area around it was filled with nearly a quarter
12:05of a million people, according to the Vatican, and there are 150,000 people lining the streets.
12:09Whit, I was just outside the square, and you could feel the weight, the significance of
12:15the moment we were witnessing.
12:16The whole crowd was silent, just breaking into applause during the homily when they mentioned
12:21Pope Francis' love for peace.
12:24Whit?
12:24An emotional weekend, indeed.
12:26Maggie, really, thank you.
12:27Staying overseas now, Russia launching a series of strikes across Ukraine just hours after
12:33the surprise meeting between President Trump and President Zelensky at the pope's funeral.
12:38ABC News has learned President Trump requested that meeting as the White House continues to
12:42press all sides for a peace deal.
12:44ABC's Marcus Moore reports.
12:47Tonight, we are learning more about that one-on-one surprise meeting between President Trump and
12:52Ukraine's President Zelensky that took place at the Vatican minutes before funeral services
12:56for Pope Francis.
12:58Zelensky responding to questions about how it went during a meeting with the UK's Prime
13:02Minister.
13:03Mr. President, how did the meeting with Trump go?
13:07That's a brilliant, brilliant productive meeting.
13:11That 15-minute meeting, a far cry from their last face-to-face exchange in the Oval Office
13:16in February.
13:17You don't have the cards right now.
13:19With us, you start having cards.
13:20I'm not playing cards.
13:21But right now, you're playing cards.
13:23I'm wearing serious, Mr. President.
13:23You're playing cards.
13:24I'm wearing serious.
13:25You're gambling with the lives of millions of people.
13:27I'm the president in war.
13:28You're gambling with World War III.
13:30President Trump also saying Saturday's meeting went well, and ABC News has learned that he requested
13:35it.
13:36The president now hitting out at Russian President Vladimir Putin, saying there is, quote,
13:40no reason for Putin to be shooting missiles into civilian areas, cities, and towns, but
13:45continuing to pressure Ukraine to accept a peace deal that forces them to give up land
13:49that Russia has seized since its invasion, as well as Crimea that it annexed in 2014.
13:54With President Trump promised on the campaign trail to end the war in Ukraine on day one
13:59of his presidency, but as he approaches his 100th day in the White House, peace remains
14:03elusive.
14:04With.
14:05Marcus, more for us.
14:06Back here in the U.S., more than 100 people were taken into custody overnight in a raid
14:11on an underground nightclub in Colorado.
14:14Active duty U.S. military personnel were also there, according to authorities, who say they
14:18were either working security or were there as patrons.
14:22And tonight, what officials say they found inside.
14:25Here's ABC's Alex Brashe.
14:29Overnight, a massive raid in Colorado Springs.
14:31More than 300 federal agents breaching what authorities say was an underground illegal nightclub
14:38as part of a drug investigation.
14:41These images, posted by the DEA's Rocky Mountain Division, show stools toppled over, a Mexican
14:46passport, and pills.
14:47Even car keys left in the chaos.
14:50What was happening inside was significant drug trafficking, prostitution, crimes of violence.
14:57All of this, the results of a months-long investigation.
15:00The DEA says ICE took more than 100 people who they say were here illegally into custody,
15:05and that members of the military were there as well.
15:08We had over a dozen active duty service members in the club tonight, either as patrons or working
15:13as armed security.
15:15Agents tell us a raid of this scale in that region is unprecedented.
15:20When it asked for those service members allegedly involved, the Army says that its Criminal
15:24Investigations Division is now conducting a joint investigation with the DEA.
15:30Witt?
15:30Alex Brashe, thank you.
15:32Turning now to the investigation following the NFL draft, top prospect Shador Sanders
15:37and son of Hall of Famer Deion Sanders, the target of a prank call as he dropped to the fifth round,
15:43and what we've just learned about who is allegedly behind that call.
15:46Here's ABC's Aika Jokji.
15:48Tonight, the NFL says they're investigating how a private number for standout prospect Shador
15:54Sanders, only available to NFL teams, got in the hands of two prank callers.
16:00Clips posted online show young men, one wearing an Ole Miss sweatshirt inside what appears to
16:05be a dorm room, impersonating New Orleans Saints general manager Mickey Loomis.
16:09The Atlanta Falcons releasing a statement saying the 21-year-old son of their defensive coordinator,
16:15Jeff Ulbrich, was responsible for the call.
16:17The incident captured on Sanders' Twitch livestream as he gathered with his family,
16:22hoping to hear his name called in this year's NFL draft.
16:25Nobody got this number, though.
16:27The star quarterback from Colorado thinking his dreams of becoming a pro were coming true
16:32until the men abruptly hung up.
16:34The Cleveland Browns select Shador Sanders, quarterback, Colorado.
16:41He was supposed to be one of the first names called in this year's NFL draft.
16:45Shador Sanders, son of Hall of Famer Deion Sanders, sliding all the way to the fifth round.
16:51Witt, Jax Ulbrich apologizing to Sanders, saying,
16:54I took away from your moment.
16:56It was selfish and childish.
16:58Witt.
16:58All right, Ike Jachi for us.
17:01There's still much more ahead on World News Tonight this Sunday.
17:03Late details from Kansas City where a paramedic was stabbed to death, allegedly by a patient.

17:36To the index now in a dramatic crash.
17:42A speedboat you see there flipping and then goes airborne for several seconds during a competition Saturday in Lake Havasu in Arizona.
17:50The boat reportedly with 10,000 horsepower was aiming for a record when it flipped.
17:56The two racers on board were said to be a little banged up, but otherwise OK.
