Transkrip
00:00:00Tricky one for the fans to get into some of these stages a lot of them are sort of
00:00:07mountainous so they really do search for every available vantage point they are out there in
00:00:11their thousands believe me great to see a few irish fans around i saw a couple of irish
00:00:16trickleurs chatting around over just walking around the service bar just now actually so great support
00:00:23as always brilliant to have a few of the lads from home coming over with the the tricolor
00:00:31draped over the edge of the stage and uh yeah great to see the fans i've got to say all from
00:00:37all over europe as well you know it's because it's such a lovely holiday destination as well
00:00:41the island's beautiful to come over experience the rally and then and then get out and uh experience
00:00:46the beaches and the weather why not i love the fact as we watch your way tanaka where you quite
00:00:50often saw some in the around the stages yesterday also quite a lot of confused holiday makers who've
00:00:55suddenly seen an international sporting event plumped in front of their hotel it's a lot of really
00:01:01intrigue to see what was going on um but yeah it is wonderful these some of these uh events are down
00:01:06here just off the uh west african coast of course the archipelago canary islands it's been a lot just
00:01:13less been fans since we joined or italic look how deep they are on the side of the road brilliant to
00:01:18see so much support not just for the wrc but for rallying on the island and um yeah it's fantastic it's
00:01:28been so far while it might not have been the most exciting rally in the world and you know it hasn't
00:01:33been the most exciting rally in the world um what's what's for sure is that if you're you see a car come
00:01:39past you on full tilt as a fan then you're you're having a good time and it has been a big party
00:01:45i mean it looks stunning you've got you've got to say that and the pace has been relentless i mean
00:01:49what they're saying is it's just the sort of competition element of the you know towing and
00:01:53throwing and fighting for positions because of the the dominance that certainly caliroga power and then
00:01:58toyota in hand have had because they had this uh base setup that just clicked into gear literally
00:02:04straight in it's still a bit of low cloud around in here i saw a bit of blue sky earlier but that is
00:02:09how quickly the weather can drive across and you can sort of make out you can seize the blue now look
00:02:14at that there you go clears just like that it is quite incredible just as i said that sentence it does
00:02:20it for me that's uh the island delivering it's a great view from our uh rebel drone we have here this
00:02:27weekend credit to the party he's uh quite some technician
00:02:35the back of the car looks nervous doesn't it and though they worked the m sport guys work hard to
00:02:39try and get a bit more front end grip but again it's a compromise and if you've got more if you've
00:02:44got a lot of bite on the front it shocks the rear of the car and the back of the car starts sliding
00:02:48i'm not saying that's exactly what's going on here but the back of the car just looks a little bit
00:02:52fidgety doesn't it yeah just mentioned didn't it it was in here actually he did mention that i don't
00:02:58think what was that though just got it all came off something it was something on the road i don't
00:03:03think it was yeah he because that's just him off just going to say he did he mentioned that he
00:03:07grazed an arm code this is what he's talking about here on the outside of these corners the
00:03:11the metal barrier of course and the we didn't see it but you get away with some of them sometimes but
00:03:15sometimes you don't you don't depends what angle you hit them at you don't want to be using them
00:03:20like a snowbank certainly first couple of split times there comparing him to his teammate mainly
00:03:33you've got greg munster 7.2 seconds quicker than josh at 15 kilometers a couple of stats there about
00:03:41this latest new edition oh just ran wide there that that almost looked like a late note or something
00:03:50like that because it was at the last minute josh just nipped the handbrake to get the car to turn
00:03:56in yeah we talked a lot about him you can see it here look they've gone from dark tarmac to lighter
00:04:00tarmac and it's it's the it's the abrasiveness or the or this or this looks more slippery stuff here
00:04:05there you go again you want a more you know new asphalt and this is what they all talked about you heard
00:04:09from them earlier in the show a couple of the guys this is what's so tricky some of these corners
00:04:14as well under the trees you've got pine needles around and of course they've got the gravel note
00:04:18crews who've been in between the stages just to keep an eye on things and let them know how these
00:04:23have changed because the surface changes is catching people out a little bit today they're certainly having
00:04:29to deal with a lot of uh data coming in yeah this this surface is so smooth let's say it's new and it is
00:04:37so smooth um that the car again it just sort of skates over the top of it the higher more abrasive older
00:04:45tarmac does offer up good good grip but the car tends to move around quite a bit on this this is the
00:04:51sort of surface that you want to be really really hot yeah i think josh himself had said that earlier on
00:04:57like the setups uh they they've been trying or setup changes i should say um you know it is working
00:05:04on some surfaces but they're not on other surfaces so it's just a constant compromise and uh it can't
00:05:09be comfortable as well because obviously we are hitting some really really high speeds
00:05:13on these sweeping roads there's a lot of corners but there's a lot of fast stuff as well
00:05:18uh 14.55.9 then for josh stage this morning uh was won uh by cali well they've all been won by
00:05:34cali i don't know why i had to read that uh it's a 14 29.6 uh josh himself uh what did he do earlier on
00:05:41today and he did a uh 1508.9 so he has uh has progressed significantly actually from the morning
00:05:51run that's one positive at least as tieri bill makes his way in as well
00:05:55so let's hear from josh molly pettett down there asking the questions as ever
00:06:12josh is a 14.55.9 that's a good improvement from this morning big changes we heard being made at
00:06:23service what were they yeah basically we've threw everything out of it and uh yeah we've made big
00:06:30changes now so it's helped bombard but i think it's compromised more so it's uh i think it's maybe in
00:06:38the right direction but a lot a lot of thoughts going through there at the moment in what way
00:06:43have you gone can you describe a little bit for us basically we've disconnected the front handy
00:06:48robot um which first spanish roads is unheard of and maybe some others are trying it so yeah it
00:06:57doesn't make sense in terms of engineering behind i think but uh yeah we're in a position we can try
00:07:03things that seems like quite a dramatic in service josh told me that they've done that and it wasn't my
00:07:12place to say because you don't know what the rest of the service park are doing but you've almost gone
00:07:16to a wet setup by disconnecting the front bars right and like josh just said there it is unheard of on a
00:07:24hot spanish road to do that that's how hard the teams are trying to get the front of the car to bite
00:07:30so this is basically taking a lot of the stiffness the stiffness across the front axle out of the car
00:07:36now it's worked in the and josh said it there it's worked in one way and compromised another but we
00:07:43and we could see that we think the front of the car is a little bit better but we were instantly seeing
00:07:47the back of the car stepping out and that's the compromise get a good bit on the front shocks the
00:07:52rear back steps out but um fair play to josh mccaleen for giving us that information and it's so
00:07:57good when we hear the drivers telling us what they've done and they don't have to say you know
00:08:02dimensions or whatever but at least giving us a bit of information is always good for the fans at
00:08:07home to know what's going on also shows i guess how desperate they're getting just to try something
00:08:11just to get that front end i don't think they are the only team who are not running the front
00:08:17anti-roll bar connected we know if greg has done it as well or is that just the trying between the
00:08:21team i think gregoire still has the front bar connected yeah i guess they've just sort of they've been
00:08:24working so well as a team the two of them haven't they they've both been acknowledging that and i
00:08:28guess this almost made josh the sort of guinea pig i guess you could say for for this loop just to
00:08:33see if it works and see if there's something they could uh try with greg later he'll certainly confirm
00:08:38that shortly and it was certainly a good time for him as well compared to to josh wasn't it so 14 45
00:08:42exactly 10.9 quicker than the irishman talking of irishman as aaron johnston goes away alongside
00:08:49takka katsuta in their bid to uh keep the pressure on uh sammy pyrie first target will be to keep
00:08:58adrian formo at arm's length and maintain that incredible top five lockout at the moment for
00:09:04toyota kizure sing just up on uh i think he clipped the curb necessarily but just up on uh three wheels
00:09:10briefly there was takka it's here from greg then see what they've tried in their service
00:09:20greg it's almost 11 seconds quicker than your teammate also a good improvement on your time for this from
00:09:24this morning was it a good feeling uh different i think again positive in some way uh they have a bit
00:09:33of undersea earlier in the corner um but i honestly there i really pushed like hell i difficult to
00:09:41get uh any more time than what i've done uh i try to do maximum with what i have
00:09:51you can't fault them for effort can you and they're throwing absolutely everything at it yeah
00:09:57and it's the right thing to do at this stage because you have to make those drastic changes to
00:10:04yeah to try to try and find something i think josh i think that's gone certainly an improvement for
00:10:09josh and it sounds silly saying it because it's what you would do if it was wet um on a dry hot
00:10:16high grip day um you'd have the bars definitely connected but you know you've got to try these
00:10:22things i think josh's gone in the right direction greg one monster saying there he can't do anything else
00:10:26he's throwing everything at it uh and and the time still isn't there you can see adrian formo's well up on
00:10:33him yeah and uh formo again doing a really good job here of uh keeping his uh two world champion
00:10:41teammates at arm length as well
00:10:43yeah i um it's the things that the things that you do the things you try sometimes it's
00:10:58it seems like a radical thing that goes against the grain but it works and uh like i said i'm 99
00:11:05sure that uh josh isn't the only one who's not running the front anti-roll bar i think you need
00:11:09to look towards the front yeah we're just hearing some speculation that a couple of uh toyota's out
00:11:15front may also be uh opting to use that uh it seems like a drastic tactic but uh obviously not
00:11:21it's clearly working very well it forces the front so if you're going into a right hander what it does is
00:11:28it allows that the body roll right to foot to lean over onto the front left which is the tire that's
00:11:34taking all the load through a right hander and sort of forces it in into the surface of the road it
00:11:39forces it to bite um and and that's why that's what you've done by allowing the literally more role
00:11:46in the body of the car but again so far you're also quicker than your teammates are you trying some
00:11:54big things this afternoon well we are we are doing a bit of testing for the afternoon we are trying
00:12:00something on the car feeling is okay but the car is a bit more lazy so we need to compensate with
00:12:08something but actually it's positive in some places so let's see what are you trying dampers
00:12:15fair play so adrian for mo maybe has gone with a different set of dampers i don't know
00:12:25but um obviously it feels like that's an opportunity to test something to try something
00:12:30i said for this is now really turned into a glorified test session for hyundai forum sport use the mileage
00:12:37available to to learn yeah i was joking certainly with white tanac in the in the zone so the the one
00:12:43positive they can take is they uh they don't have another time around until october yeah we've got
00:12:48seven gravel events to come after this and uh yeah they've got several months to get get all that
00:12:53head scratching out the way they've certainly as you say learnt a bucket load about the hard compound uh
00:12:59hankuk and how it behaves out there this weekend but certainly whatever foremost found and we talked a
00:13:04bit about it earlier with this at this base uh diff setup he does have as being certainly different to
00:13:09newville we don't we don't know necessarily how uh tanac's gone in terms of that base setup but clearly
00:13:15it's uh not the same as uh for mo because once again 7.2 seconds slower look here than their young
00:13:22teammate uh newville also slower than four mo through the uh the first half of the stage belgian a few minutes
00:13:30further back and look at that now 8.8 seconds now after 22.7 kilometers
00:13:47they did try something a bit drastic as well uh this morning as i mentioned they've
00:13:51tried everything that was reasonable and they try and now attempted something uh
00:13:54that was unreasonable it certainly didn't work in the morning loop but so they're certainly
00:13:59eliminating them as they go aren't they i guess which which uh bits of tinkering they can attempt
00:14:129.2 slower than four mo is a 14 41 exactly for tanac
00:14:18i guess do you think that i'm still able to enjoy the stage it's hard to say but i mean it's just so
00:14:25frustrating they just knowing that they could do so much better but they're completely hamstrung aren't
00:14:30they look if they're not enjoying it then um you know because yes they should be but from a professional
00:14:39point of view it will be incredibly frustrating for them no question about that because if they're not
00:14:45able to achieve what they have set out to do especially with you know their new young teammate
00:14:52uh outpacing them this weekend let's hear from what it's an improvement from this morning are you
00:14:58trying anything extreme this afternoon uh yeah i'm uh flying testing so uh basically engineers put something
00:15:07in and uh and uh i had discovered so i was hoping for something but yeah all safe that sounds
00:15:14interesting very interesting at least he's enjoying himself it's just like it almost sounds like he's
00:15:22saying you know what guys do what you want and i'll tell you if it works or not it's getting to that
00:15:26point isn't it great to see you still seeing uh the funny side and uh yeah they changed it again and i guess
00:15:32a bit like the guys have said coming through already works in some places better in some places it's
00:15:38worse in other places so all these surface changes get a little bit dusty isn't it as well some of these
00:15:42corners very rapid as well also a little bit slower as you can see uh than formo but he is as we've seen
00:15:52this is the pattern that's been developing he's uh two or three seconds up on tanak at least
00:16:03yeah sun properly burning through now so those uh surface temperatures remember we heard it 31 degrees
00:16:10surface temperature um noted early on but that's just going to get a bit warmer still two stages to
00:16:16run in this uh loop of uh just under 63 kilometers uh today can we have the uh that's palmas uh street
00:16:24stage around the stadium next to the service park to wrap up the day this evening
00:16:37uh certainly from um newville's point of view it sounds like from all the parameters they've been
00:16:45trying he's happy that he's got the best of a bad situation that you know they've eliminated everything
00:16:51that you know this is the best they can get at least that's something they can uh they can say and
00:16:56it you know gives him the the knowledge that he's attacking as best he can without having to constantly
00:17:01tinker i know obviously they will with the changing conditions maybe but that's something yeah i mean
00:17:06it's it's hard for the whole team when you when you when you're in a situation like this to to remain
00:17:12motivated but you have to look at it like what said as an opportunity to learn go and test him and um
00:17:20you know this they've certainly made strides forward compared to where they were on friday
00:17:24but um there's no question it's going to be frustrating for everybody down in the hyundai awning
00:17:28so sebastian ager back since his uh uh record-breaking win in monte carlo at the start of the year
00:17:35wonderful to have him back i'm sure he would have wanted to test his uh metal on these uh infamous
00:17:41stages of gran canaria and we saw didn't we a couple of times this morning getting really close let's
00:17:48hear from thierry thierry 4.6 seconds down on adrian and oi telling us that he's out there blind
00:17:54testing different things is that the same for you uh blind testing no but uh we're trying things
00:18:01which usually you don't do on a rally but uh it's uh it's the time to do it now so why not what kind
00:18:10of things ah all kind of things i mean we tried everything you can try on a rally camp except the
00:18:17dips because we don't have any other the feeling in here was understeer uh i started quite well in
00:18:23the beginning i mean after two three days i start to find a balance but at the end it just went uh at
00:18:32some point and then i actually can keep the tire quite well but the car just doesn't allow me to do
00:18:40yeah it's really good feedback from thierry neville as well just saying that understeer is
00:18:44is what he's struggling with he saw takamoto katsuto having a big power slide through a long left
00:18:49hander a moment ago but um yeah good feedback from thierry and again somebody else saying we're
00:18:53trying things you don't normally do in a row how long is it going to be before someone bolts a set
00:18:57of wets on one of these things and send it out you know because um you know we are seeing the teams
00:19:02trying all sorts of different things and like he said now is the time to do it um and and it was good
00:19:10feedback that obviously the car working well to start with uh but then um either the tire is
00:19:15overheating or something else is going on but it's causing it to to understeer once the tire pressure
00:19:20once the tire temp comes up yeah so it's as you were then in terms of the uh hyinbe runners with
00:19:26four mo six for newville and wintanak gradually pulling uh further behind their french teammate
00:19:32meanwhile takakatsuta in turn is doing his bit to uh just keep four mo at arm's length it's not a
00:19:39huge amount in it he's 1.4 seconds up on the frenchman at 22.7 kilometers
00:19:47he's also got his eyes on sammy pyrie just over nine seconds ahead of him in the fight for four
00:19:52but as they both said you know as long as they can maintain uh that sort of top five slot and they
00:19:57don't throw it off the road it doesn't really matter who finishes fourth and fifth because it's
00:20:01already going to be a i'd imagine a record-breaking run that's a terrific effort uh 1.3 seconds quicker
00:20:07then for katsuta yeah i think tak out you could see him there he looked frustrated the car did look
00:20:13like it was a bit of a handful didn't it we saw him on a couple of occasions from the heli there
00:20:18with the car just sliding four-wheel drifting um whereas this man has just looked like he's been on
00:20:26absolute rails whenever he bolted himself into that toyota yaris he looks so comfortable around
00:20:35though we know he's he's a lover of uh drifting isn't he looks so comfortable just swinging that
00:20:40car around the roundabout let's hear from tucker
00:20:42tucker that's quick it's through by 1.3 seconds what is the feedback from this second pulse yeah it's
00:20:51uh much drier for sure uh easier to drive but i don't know because of temperature or setting changes
00:20:57it feels uh um not really good at this morning so yeah i don't know a bit weird but all okay did you
00:21:06you make changes of service yeah a few a few so it shouldn't be big but quite different feeling
00:21:14again so many variables you make the change but also the temperature is drastically higher than it
00:21:18was this morning yesterday didn't we yeah it's interesting um and you've got it you've got to try
00:21:23and anticipate the the fact that well hang on we're going out and everything the road has been just
00:21:27getting hotter and hotter throughout the day um so and all of that obviously is going to make the tire
00:21:33the tire temp go up a lot quicker yeah and we did see a little bit world at times to me through this
00:21:41final couple of kilometers a little bit of a slide wasn't it through one of those dusty corners i'm not
00:21:46sure if it was this one but that's sort of been reflected in the the pace here with a higher coming
00:21:50up behind he was about five half a second only two tenths actually uh quicker than tacker that's now
00:21:56extended to 1.2 seconds quicker than tacker at 20 kilometers as you can see let's see what this next split
00:22:02does sebastian ogier meanwhile is on an absolute charge remember california has won every single
00:22:12stage of this rally so far could this be the one yeah that uh that he gets usurped on we've been
00:22:21having our ecstaticians that doing all the the research on that one the last time this has ever had
00:22:26held that if he had done it uh was sebastian loeb in terms of winning every stage in a rally corsica
00:22:31back in or 20 years ago won every single stage of a rally uh and uh yeah i think ogier just be doing
00:22:38his bit to make sure uh he can uh stop him doing that and we saw um rovin perra win 13 in a row in estonia
00:22:46uh in 2022 uh let's see anyway that's sammy pyre meanwhile is still a second or so up when katsuta
00:22:55just uh seeking to get that gap into double figures and 1.2 seconds uh and he has indeed uh done exactly
00:23:03that as you can see from the left of your screen uh that gap between fourth and fifth uh now 10.3
00:23:08seconds good job from sammy really proving that this young man is a talent on all surfaces wrc2 champion
00:23:17of course talking of wrc2
00:23:26uh here's here joe and brussell off on his way he's been also dominating at the the top of our lead
00:23:32support category
00:23:38sounds a little bit more aggressive in the rally two car isn't it around those uh donuts yeah but
00:23:43you don't have as much grunt to lie up all four wheels so you it's it's actually more complicated
00:23:48to do it in a rally two car than a wc2 car than it is rally one sammy that's quickest through so far
00:23:53by 1.2 seconds also around 11 seconds uh better than this morning did you feel those improvements in
00:23:59there yeah i can feel quite many places uh quite quite happy with that let's say i don't feel that
00:24:08there was any bigger race now but just let's say even even more let's say under control or i know i
00:24:15know the places where i can take the time so happy for that what sort of places are they
00:24:22fast slow whatever so it's those long long states that there happen to be a few corners which
00:24:28which are not uh perfect yeah good uh detailed response uh you wonder now of elvin evans i mean
00:24:38he's been sort of uh getting increasingly sort of ever since yesterday afternoon i mean he's safe
00:24:42in third doesn't need to do any more than this with his uh huge need remember he's got a record
00:24:46breaking 36 point championship lead after back-to-back victories says elvin uh but he's uh is this a
00:24:53a sign that maybe with that gap already uh up to what is it 16.1 seconds to og8 now and on that sort
00:24:59of uh place is it's just a safety first approach or maybe everything too is having a little bit of
00:25:05an experiment we'll find out for sure i think elvin's got a lot more to lose in this stage than to gain
00:25:14from a championship perspective so keeping it on the road first of all is critical and making sure that
00:25:19at the very least he scores points for third place um he can't afford to back off too much
00:25:24because sammy's only i think 23.9 seconds behind something like that so um you know it's he can't
00:25:32drop back into the the clutches of sammy piari too much because if you have an overshoot or a spin or a
00:25:37stall it's very easy to drop 10 or 15 seconds um but does he need to take big risks no he doesn't
00:25:43no absolutely not and uh coming through to the last couple of corners now is our world champion
00:26:02there we go 3.3 seconds slower than sammy piari really good run that was from the young fin
00:26:08and it's a 14 32.6 for the world championship leader
00:26:17scotty martin uh alongside of course as always
00:26:22and here's our lead local driver alejandro cajon the uh reigning spanish national champion he'll be
00:26:29getting a roar of support from all these thousands of uh local fans and as you said it's a it's a pretty
00:26:36neat looking uh creator isn't it looks mega i'm a big big fan of the orange wheels on it as well it
00:26:41looks cool you whacked them on your car at home chenny um let's hear from elvin shall we a little
00:26:48bit surprised to see you lose 3.3 to sammy in there but that of course depends on your approach this
00:26:53afternoon yeah and i mean you're still uh trained but it felt so abrasive in the the end part there
00:26:59trying to be a bit careful on the tire but uh yeah let's see what's the feeling with the car driving
00:27:05it ah it's a bit more movement now than the morning but otherwise fine
00:27:11yeah that's maybe to be expected with that uh rising temperatures as you say that
00:27:16they do have the sort of a minimal sort of uh peak temperature don't they these tires meanwhile
00:27:20let's get back to that uh it's it's a huge gap of uh almost 40 seconds at the front but the one
00:27:26target oj really has is to to just stop his teammate from winning every stage and look at this once
00:27:31again on those splits jenny it's starting to drift the way of robin perra yet again not much in it
00:27:37though just seven tenths a second quicker up for the first time that's at 15 kilometers
00:27:44could actually wonder that that's a cheeky deep cut there from oj is he just trying to throw a bit of
00:27:48gravel a bit of muck behind him just to keep his uh teammate honest
00:27:55there are not too much cutting at all in this rally but there are a couple of
00:27:59creastly dirty corners through this sequence yeah those numbers you're seeing at the bottom of your
00:28:04screen relative to sammy payari um cali rovin perra yet to come to come through so
00:28:15at this stage oj does look set to set the new benchmark but i can tell you rovin perra as as
00:28:21you mentioned pk is outpacing him behind i mean he's got great respect isn't there between these two
00:28:28teammates there's 10 world titles between them obviously uh eight of them uh this man's um but
00:28:34it's you know he's 40 years old and uh rovin perra obviously these days 24 i can't keep up
00:28:40though he's still so young isn't he i was really impressed with sebastian ogier's uh midday service
00:28:45interview you know he spoke so well about the car about what the car's doing about his performance
00:28:49personally as well and um although he was saying it in jest there is also an element of um you know
00:28:55there was a big drop off on one of the stages and at 40 you go i just don't fancy that anymore you
00:29:00know you just don't want to take the risks like i used to and i get that and um yeah i think i think
00:29:05he was one of the best interviews given in a long time great questions as well though chenny yeah
00:29:09yes you did a very good job now i can attest that i drove up through the uh the power stage we had the
00:29:15wolf power stage uh which we're gonna see tomorrow and i can attest there are some frightening frightening
00:29:21just hugging the side of a mountain effectively with some uh yeah it's sort of a monte carlo style
00:29:27stuff we'll see some of that tomorrow i can tell you're in for a treat uh with the wolf power stage
00:29:32uh tomorrow that uh maspalomas stage is something special nobody can say that you're not trying but i
00:29:40do have calo 1.9 faster on the last split i mean you can't stop him what a surprise i mean it's been
00:29:47a good stage for me happy with the car it's it's improving are you determined to get him this
00:29:52afternoon yeah of course only on the last one i kill him on the last one i wait for the last one
00:29:59the last one is the last one kilometers it's a 1.8 kilometers super special you met the last of the
00:30:06normal loop because that's the one where rob and perra beat everybody by eight and a half seconds but
00:30:10at least you see the funny side that you can see that the split time uh progression there it's
00:30:15exactly what we're talking about and it's interesting wasn't it we were speculating a bit is it
00:30:19just managing the tires and if you're a bit too aggressive in the middle i tried to get that out
00:30:23of oj that uh that chat you know he wasn't really saying it's not anything to do with the
00:30:29tires necessarily it's just the sort of driving style and the rhythm you get into it's the feeling you get
00:30:34yeah you know but you you can feel when the tire is starting to go off yeah but you're in trouble
00:30:39at that point because you've got to back off to bring it exactly the tire tank back down i don't
00:30:44think that's an issue that calais has had just the back of the car just sliding a little bit wide there
00:30:48but i think today calais i mean it's just through stage nine earlier on it was beautiful to watch the
00:30:55onboard you know that such minimal inputs in the steering he's going in hitting the coming up to a
00:31:00corner hitting the brakes turning in and then feeding steering out there was no opposite lock
00:31:06there was no mid corner understeer mid corner oversteer none of that it was on rails and the
00:31:11result was he just blew everybody else away now talking of blowing everyone away let's take a look
00:31:16at this next bit oh it's actually come back a bit here chenny look it's dropped a second there
00:31:20somewhere in that last sector between uh 20 and 22 there are a couple of dirty corners through there
00:31:26is this a chance for us yeah we saw the back of the car sliding quite a bit on the back coming
00:31:31from the heli again from the left-hander have the rears gotten a little bit hot maybe
00:31:37but yeah we've just seen just seen the back of the car a little bit again there in mid corner
00:31:42we just saw him correcting slightly so the car doesn't look like it's perfectly balanced does it
00:31:47and i reckon that's where that second that you're referring to has gone let's see then into the last
00:31:52corner it's going to be the host still done it hasn't he of course he has 14 14 23.8 and we are now 10
00:31:59stages uh from 10 and that's uh that run of 13 that's his own record from estonia a couple of years ago
00:32:09thank you on the time for college 14 23 8 2 3 8 color thank you kyle instrom
00:32:17just informing that uh yeah look at this we talked about the tires they still looking pretty good
00:32:23nick don't they love to know the tire attempts across all the different teams when they get to
00:32:27the end of the stage particularly the fronts
00:32:35kala that's 10 out of 10 stages passes through by 1.2 seconds are we watching you managing now are you
00:32:42still having a bit of a go yeah i'm fully managing i'm quite happy happy with that i know sepp is going
00:32:48for it so i'm quite happy with the times but uh we had some uh issue with the intercom on the stage
00:32:54sometimes it was cutting out so we need to go and check it well even with that distraction he still
00:33:00manages to to maintain it i mean he's almost he's almost it sounds ridiculous to say it's almost like he's
00:33:06he's toying with the eight-time champions i know he's trying but i'm just managing and it's just uh
00:33:10anyway so an issue with the intercom there and remember this morning as well he had an issue with
00:33:15the i think it was the linkage on the top of the box um well he was he said he was downshifting and
00:33:20couldn't and it wasn't always giving him the gear and that again just interrupts the braking procedure
00:33:26getting the car stopped and still every single stage he's won um it's been quite incredible from
00:33:32from california yeah it's been an incredible run as well from this man there is a frenchman of course
00:33:36leading the way then in wrc2 a nice chat with joanne rossel in the uh in the media zone asked him if
00:33:43if he'd had a bit of chat with joanne bernardo of course his fellow frenchman multiple tarmac
00:33:48champion and he said absolutely that they grilled him a lot and i think he's quite relieved that uh
00:33:53joanne is out competing uh isn't he this weekend in the french championship the uh rally round
00:33:58charbonnier that he's actually uh leading as well i don't think he's quite relieved he probably
00:34:03wouldn't be here because bonato is something special he's won the last two uh rally is las canarias
00:34:08events in the erc uh so rossel getting a good bit of data from his uh compatriot before the week
00:34:14started as you'd expect joanne rossel in a good battle with alejandro cashon in that repsol liveried
00:34:24toyota and uh cashon just made some inroads into rossel on the last couple of stages before service
00:34:32and uh now rossel responds he won this stage in wrc2 this morning and he's done it again
00:34:40or at least for now sets the benchmark i don't think cashon's gonna outpace him either at 20 kilometers
00:34:45he's 2.2 seconds down on rossel so we look at emil lindholm such a shame he picked up that
00:34:51yeah yeah i was walking to the media zone i hadn't seen that that's a really frustrating
00:34:56for the former wrc2 champion yeah just to reiterate rossel currently with a 14.8
00:35:02second lead but as you say it's uh looking good so far let's hear from him
00:35:10yo and currently nobody faster than you in this stage how does it compare to the morning
00:35:14um not bad um we try to to push the plan is to push and uh did no mistake and every time the same
00:35:25but uh for the mama it's quite okay are you worried about alejandro on the next stages yeah
00:35:33very difficult yeah he's always doing a great job in cashon it cannot be reiterated how strong some of
00:35:39these local drivers they know these roads inside out come here every year the likes of cash on we
00:35:44get efran larena as well having a good run the former european champion from a couple of years back
00:35:49and uh alejandro loving his run out there i'm not sure he's even that worried about trying to catch uh
00:35:55catch the leader but he's just absolutely relishing this run and being able to show what he can do at
00:36:01rallying's top table yeah he's really familiar with the next couple of stages as well certainly the last
00:36:06one of the loop really good through there and uh i imagine we'll try to replicate what he did earlier
00:36:14on by outpacing rossel but it looks like joan's just controlling it from the front at the moment
00:36:18doesn't it in the in the citrum yeah a couple of seconds in it he was only one second down at about
00:36:26seven and a half kilometers but yeah you can see that's just been pulled away really good strong
00:36:30finish wasn't it to the end of the stage uh for the frenchman
00:36:38a bit of a chat there between uh alejandro and boja rosado
00:36:51nicolai grison also having a really good run after claiming victory in the european competition
00:36:56on the new mainland events in sierra marina a couple of weeks ago up to third now
00:37:07alejandro that's a couple of seconds down on johan there's a good battle between you now do you
00:37:11believe he's pushing quite hard this afternoon yeah i'm trying i'm trying to push uh now it's super hot
00:37:19the tires are uh completely out of the temperature so let's see i'm trying to to manage it but in
00:37:26some some places it's difficult how many seconds can you get out of your hand on the next couple of
00:37:31stages i don't know let's see that's a cheeky little uh let's see certainly the last one out of the
00:37:41loop i think you'll be fairly well on it yeah it's interesting you know obviously the uh rally
00:37:45two cars as well having that similar issue aren't there of course managing the uh optimal uh performance
00:37:51of the uh hanker hard tires by bryzen tailing off a little bit here towards the finish maybe he's
00:37:58having exactly the same issue back when the top sport skoda this year
00:38:09had a spin didn't he uh yesterday he's done really well to find his uh
00:38:12fighting himself back onto the podium
00:38:22nice couple of corners let's see he is going to be slower
00:38:29yeah that's tailed off quite significantly hasn't it that pace has gone from me he's actually quicker
00:38:33the first couple of uh or five kilometers or so ends up 4.3 down yeah i think he's cooked the rubber
00:38:39to be honest i think he's just cooked those tires you can see the car was sliding quite a lot as well
00:38:43wasn't it um particularly the back of the car was moving around quite a lot but i suspect
00:38:50it's just a very hot set of hand cooks on that car back with emil lindholm like he said picked up a
00:38:56rear left puncture earlier on in the fight for fifth and it's a real shame for him because um
00:39:02it was there or thereabouts only puncture we've seen all weekend the time just slipped away from you
00:39:09there at the end you were quicker to begin with was that the tires uh yeah in the end it feels like
00:39:14overheating but uh i the car is a little bit different now and i just a little bit was surprised
00:39:22from the driving but try to adapt too much handbrake i think there's never too much handbrake um but
00:39:32um yeah you can't you can't slide the car around on this on this uh on this surface you know if you're
00:39:39if you're nipping the handbrake all the time again you're you're unsettling the car forcing heat into
00:39:43the tires so um yeah it's just about being super smooth isn't it yeah you can see again from the
00:39:49attitude of the car i just had all the hallmarks off you've cooked the tires he was a little bit offended
00:39:55when i uh said you join these stages you know you like driving quite aggressively i think it might
00:39:59have been a little bit lost in translation but he's uh he's a fun driver to watch uh meanwhile yeah
00:40:04as you were saying they will lindholm after that uh issue uh in a couple of stages back he's dropped
00:40:09down to eighth place but he is only 4.7 behind roberto dapra so he's got an early target to uh keep an eye on at least
00:40:17uh and he is uh already uh going quicker than the italian so he may gain a position in here
00:40:27needs to do something doesn't he pk he's now on a charge back yeah after dropping oh well over a
00:40:32minute earlier on such a shame as well because he was up until that point going well he couldn't
00:40:36explain it either and uh again really frustrating when you see all of your compatriots your your
00:40:44competitors around you um not picking up punctures not having any problems and you're the one that
00:40:50does it it doesn't half get into your head uh really frustrating for emil yeah great to have him
00:40:54back though and back in the top sports skoda be fun to see what he can do this year let's hear from emil
00:41:08emil pretty frustrating before lunch a bit of a fight back now how are things in here
00:41:14well um yeah not not the best stage quite a lot of movement but um in general um getting getting
00:41:23a better feeling with the cup sure uh not easy to to wipe away what happened in the morning yeah
00:41:29yeah i totally get that i totally get that because he's the only one who suffered from it pk but what
00:41:35a stage what a rally it's been for this man yeah it might be frustration for that finn but certainly not
00:41:41for for this finn it is now a clean sweep of uh 10 stage wins uh from 10 stages for our two-time world
00:41:50champion um he seems to be right in the zone and uh it's just coming easy to him now isn't it as he uh
00:41:57uh steve stays ahead of uh sabo jay what a great run it was for sammy pyrie their third fastest
00:42:03in that stage we have a takakatsu to fourth and adrian formo the best uh once again of the hyundai's elvin
00:42:08evans uh not feeling it at the moment uh just the sixth fastest time uh for him uh with newville
00:42:13and tanak continuing to struggle a little bit uh with that setup uh but it was another stage win
00:42:19there for uh rossel and kind of rovin pera uh still now leading 20 38 seconds ahead of ogier with evans
00:42:29safe in uh third so that's about all we've got time for stage 10 then the second loop continues a few more
00:42:36stages to run today including uh the grand canary stadium to wrap up the day the show continues
00:42:41then join us again later and it's goodbye for now
00:42:50so
00:43:11so
00:43:20so
00:43:24you
00:43:45you
00:46:44I am just happy to be here but it's very hard.
00:46:54That's an interesting exclamation.
00:46:56Wow.
00:46:57He seems like he's in a bit of survival mode.
00:46:58That was almost a surprise that time but he is...
00:47:00the 3rd fastest through so far, he's quicker than Nikolai Gryazin, who's ahead of him on
00:47:07the lead towards him, he has closed that gap a little bit there, Bex.
00:47:11Just a little, yeah, it's still a good battle, isn't it? 7.3 seconds, Rossell now adrift
00:47:15off the WRC2 podium. Efren Jurena, who we see here, it's a little bit further back from
00:47:23Rossell. Let's just give you an up-to-date standings going into this stage.
00:47:30From WRC2, Efren was 14.6 seconds behind Rossell coming into this stage. Just looking at the
00:47:38splits, though, Efren's lost, is losing a little bit of time through the stage to Rossell.
00:47:47It was 1.8 seconds down at 15 kilometers. And there you can see the completed time on the
00:47:57stage there for Efren. 15.04.8, that's 9.4 down from fastest. Let's find out what's been going on in this one, then, for Efren.
00:48:09Because that advantage Rossell has is now up to 20 seconds.
00:48:14He's rolling over the rocks. Efren, that's 9.4 seconds dropped in there. Is there still an issue
00:48:25with the front diff? Yeah, of course. It doesn't help. That's clear. We are struggling a lot,
00:48:31so our tyres are completely gone since kilometer 10, so it is what it is.
00:48:40Yeah, he's not the only one who's been suffering with the tyre temperatures, certainly in this stage.
00:48:46As you said, the ambient temperature and obviously the road temperature that comes with it is going
00:48:50to make things a little bit more tricky, something else to manage. Great to have him on three Spanish drivers
00:48:56in the top six in WRC, which is great to see.
00:49:00Yeah, this is Diego Ruilova, who we're watching.
00:49:04We had Luis Moya in here earlier in commentary. He was fantastic, wasn't he, Pique, all the stories he was telling.
00:49:10Oh, my God, yeah, absolutely.
00:49:11We could listen to him all day. We really could.
00:49:13He's got tons of stories to tell, but he was, you know, he's really keen on watching
00:49:18and nurturing young talent, and he was chatting at length about the Spanish drivers
00:49:23who were coming through and performing here this weekend.
00:49:26Alejandro, obviously, the top of them right now. He's in podium position.
00:49:35Problem is, it's really difficult for them to make any inroads.
00:49:39We've seen some super close times between the drivers here.
00:49:43For Ruilova, he does finish six out of a total of eight drivers through in WRC2.
00:49:49Diego, 9.2 seconds to the fastest time in here.
00:49:52What sort of feeling do you have this afternoon?
00:49:56I think the first part of the stage is good, but in the final,
00:50:01I make two or three mistakes, and I lost time.
00:50:08But now keep focus on the next stage.
00:50:13Yeah, it is getting quite tricky, I think, that last couple of kilometers, Bex.
00:50:17We saw, didn't we, Chaka Katsuta had a huge slide.
00:50:20There's a lot of sort of dirty corners.
00:50:23We don't see very much cutting here, do we?
00:50:25But certainly the back end of this one, you can sort of see it from some of the heli shots.
00:50:29It gets, there's a little bit of dust thrown around there,
00:50:31and obviously that's only going to get worse through every passing state.
00:50:33Now, this man is certainly in a bit of a battle.
00:50:37Then he's trying to defend Emil Linton, Roberto Dapra,
00:50:39but I'm not sure he's going to manage it.
00:50:41Is he in the fight for seventh?
00:50:42Yeah, it's a tough one.
00:50:44You're talking about the cutting.
00:50:45There's a little bit more cutting today, maybe, than what we saw yesterday.
00:50:48It's really minimal yesterday.
00:50:50There are a few more sectors out there today, though,
00:50:54where it's just getting a few rocks pulled out from the inner corners.
00:50:59Yeah, tough one for Dapra.
00:51:00But, you know, yesterday we saw really improving times from him,
00:51:03and I think he was delighted at the end of the day with his performance.
00:51:06And, you know, to top it all off, he was celebrating his birthday,
00:51:09and it had gone the right way all day.
00:51:12Let's find out, though, how he's feeling right now.
00:51:14Confirmation, though, he has slipped behind Lindholm there.
00:51:17Yeah, four and a half seconds behind now, overall.
00:51:20Roberto, 15 seconds off the fastest time in there.
00:51:23How do you feel you're managing with the tyres this afternoon?
00:51:25The temperature is much, much higher now.
00:51:28Yeah, it was better this morning.
00:51:29I struggled a little bit during all the stage, understeering.
00:51:35And, yeah, we'll try to do something better for the next stage,
00:51:39and we will see.
00:51:42Now, that's not much of a consolation,
00:51:44but that is something of a consolation for Lindholm there.
00:51:46He was back to seventh.
00:51:47He was absolutely gutted, wasn't he?
00:51:49Still ruining that tyre issue late in the morning loop.
00:51:55Let's take a look at Yuki Yamamoto.
00:51:57James Fulton in the co-driving seat here.
00:51:59In terms of the overall classifications,
00:52:03in WRC2 after nine stages,
00:52:05they were in ninth position overall,
00:52:07and another driver in a good battle here.
00:52:115.4 seconds behind Lindholm.
00:52:13But, you know, the difference between the levels of experience
00:52:22between these two drivers is pretty vast.
00:52:25ML is a former WRC2 champion.
00:52:28Yuki Yamamoto still, as part of that development program,
00:52:32very much learning his trade.
00:52:34So that gap will extend out as ML makes his way back up the leaderboard
00:52:41after the tyre damage sustained this morning.
00:52:44Yuki, 18.2 off the fastest time in there.
00:52:49What sort of improvements did you feel?
00:52:51Yeah, actually, the temperature is quite warm now,
00:52:55and I felt like really, like, tyres were warm.
00:52:57So I had a massive on this, yeah, but, yeah, but still learning,
00:53:03and also the feeling was okay.
00:53:05So just keep like this.
00:53:08Yeah, and they're running in tandem, these two, aren't they,
00:53:13the Toyota Development Drivers,
00:53:14with the Karikagore just behind,
00:53:17I'd say just behind, he's about 46 seconds behind, isn't he,
00:53:20his teammates, but they are at least both running in the top ten.
00:53:33Still got three stages, haven't we, to run today.
00:53:36They've got the last two of the regular loop,
00:53:38plus this super-special stage,
00:53:40and if you heard that interview earlier,
00:53:41that seems to be the one OJ's targeting best,
00:53:45to try and get his that list.
00:53:47Maybe I can try and get him in the Algarve Stadium super-special,
00:53:51which is only 1.8 kilometres this evening.
00:53:55Yeah, it's kind of unique, isn't it, that little super-special stage.
00:53:57We've run it on the ERC for the past few years,
00:54:00and it utilises the roads around the Gran Canaria Stadium here,
00:54:04and also heads into basically a basketball court
00:54:07for a little bit of a hairpin and a donut.
00:54:09Yeah, I think OJ's hoping for a slam dunk in there, Bex.
00:54:12Oh, come on.
00:54:20Karikagore, a bit of a different challenge this afternoon,
00:54:22with the higher temperatures.
00:54:23How did you manage?
00:54:24Yeah, already from maybe early of the stages,
00:54:29I felt some, you know, overheating,
00:54:31so all the time on the steering,
00:54:33so it's quite difficult to, you know,
00:54:34follow the line on the technical section,
00:54:37but, yeah, they're all okay.
00:54:38Yeah, nine seconds slower than his teammates, Hikaru.
00:54:44A lot of them pretty much saying the same thing, aren't they?
00:54:46Just managing the temperatures on these handker parts.
00:54:50These guys look freezing under the trees,
00:54:53by the way, with their jackets on.
00:54:54So strange, so strange the weather here, isn't it?
00:54:59You know, you do go into the shade here,
00:55:01it's very cold,
00:55:02but where the sun is on the stage itself,
00:55:05you know, we saw temperatures,
00:55:06road temperatures get really quite high yesterday.
00:55:09It's incredible, isn't it,
00:55:10that, you know, these stages are only, what are we,
00:55:12probably 25 minutes away or something
00:55:15from where we are in Las Palmas,
00:55:18at the service park, sorry,
00:55:21and we've been under sort of heavy cloud all day.
00:55:24And it's so how localised,
00:55:25as Lewis Moyer was explaining it so well to us earlier on.
00:55:31And Cherny, then.
00:55:33Yeah, we talked about this earlier, didn't we,
00:55:35the fact that he, yesterday,
00:55:36at the end of every stage,
00:55:37he told us he's been tinkering with setup all the time.
00:55:40And driving style.
00:55:41And driving style as well,
00:55:42he should be altering everything.
00:55:44I was expecting him to come out
00:55:45with freshly dyed hair this morning
00:55:47to see if that would help.
00:55:49Yeah, and I can't wait to hear
00:55:50what you're working on this afternoon.
00:55:52Yeah, we again did some changes,
00:55:54but yeah, we had like great fun in the car,
00:55:56but the time is not that good.
00:55:58We were faster just by four seconds,
00:56:01which is really nothing if,
00:56:02when we are losing like one second per kilometre,
00:56:04but yeah, at least we had good fun.
00:56:07What did you change?
00:56:08We did like row bars and stuff,
00:56:11and yeah, now we change something again,
00:56:13something else,
00:56:13and then again, and then again,
00:56:15and maybe we find it at the end.
00:56:18I tell you what,
00:56:19if he gets through that final stage tomorrow,
00:56:21the Wolf Power stage,
00:56:22and tells Molle there,
00:56:24we've finally found it.
00:56:25Better late than never,
00:56:26but he's not the only one, is he?
00:56:27Let's be fair.
00:56:28No, no, absolutely not.
00:56:29Bright up at the sports top level,
00:56:31a lot of drivers sort of scratching their heads.
00:56:36And Gjord Linnemar not scoring points this weekend,
00:56:39the Estonian.
00:56:41And sad to see,
00:56:42obviously, in this stage earlier on,
00:56:43we lost his compatriot Robert Vierves,
00:56:45one of our first sort of major retirees,
00:56:48actually, isn't it?
00:56:49We, you know,
00:56:49just seen that on a fan cam on social media,
00:56:53and just got his lines wrong
00:56:54and clouted one of those armcoes.
00:56:57No, it was a wall.
00:56:58Oh, was it a wall?
00:56:59Sorry.
00:56:59It was a wall, yeah.
00:57:00I saw him bounce off,
00:57:00so I was looking at it from a distance, apologies.
00:57:03He certainly clouted something with a...
00:57:05But you're right, you know,
00:57:06we haven't really seen any, you know,
00:57:09incidents out there,
00:57:10big incidents.
00:57:11Mathew Franceschi yesterday didn't,
00:57:13he hasn't restarted the rally today, unfortunately.
00:57:16On the second stage of the day,
00:57:19he went off in difficult conditions in the fog.
00:57:24Georg, much higher temperatures
00:57:28to deal with this afternoon.
00:57:30How are you finding it?
00:57:31Yeah, it was tricky.
00:57:33Tyres started moving a lot at the end.
00:57:35At one point,
00:57:36I thought that the rear puncture
00:57:37was sliding so much,
00:57:38but okay, we're here.
00:57:41Need to keep that in mind now.
00:57:48So, Georg Linnema then with a 15.17.2.
00:57:52Diego Dominguez is going to be the next car
00:57:55we see coming through the stage.
00:57:59Now, in terms of the overall classification,
00:58:03Diego Dominguez in 12th position within WRC2.
00:58:07He's 23.7 seconds behind Jan Cherny,
00:58:10and he's got Luis Monson just 5.8 seconds behind.
00:58:16Luis, of course, is the hero here on Gran Canaria,
00:58:20the man that's done this event 34 times previously.
00:58:25He's been on the top step of the podium here.
00:58:28Multiple Canaries champion.
00:58:32Yeah, Dominguez will be the first to tell you
00:58:34it's not his preferred surface on asphalt,
00:58:38but certainly continuing his rapid learning progress.
00:58:43And that's what, you know, a lot of drivers,
00:58:46certainly the ones who are not nominated
00:58:48for points this weekend.
00:58:49We've seen that with Solberg, with Verbes,
00:58:51with Georg Linnema, who's just come through.
00:58:54You know, they're doing this event for experience
00:58:55to gain experience on tarmac.
00:58:58Yeah, 16.3 seconds slower than the top mark,
00:59:03but he's quicker than the three guys ahead of him.
00:59:07Diego, second pass, much warmer.
00:59:09How are you dealing with it?
00:59:10Well, yeah, just getting more comfortable
00:59:13with the car, with the tarmac,
00:59:15and, yeah, second pass always a bit easier,
00:59:17and, yeah, just got a bit more dirty
00:59:18on this final section, but, yeah, we did okay,
00:59:20and the main, the most important thing
00:59:22is that we keep improving.
00:59:28Yeah, that is the most important thing.
00:59:29Here is Monson then, a legend he is.
00:59:33Yeah, and, you know, he's got such a great history
00:59:36with this event, and in terms of the stage wins
00:59:39he's had over the years, the amount of times
00:59:41he's completed the rally.
00:59:43Shakedown at Santa Bracida was, it is his hometown,
00:59:47you know, so he is very much on home territory there.
00:59:52But every time he's participated in this event,
00:59:55when we've, you know, we've had the chance,
00:59:56the opportunity to chat him, to interview him,
00:59:58he's a complete gentleman.
01:00:00He's got some great stories of rallying on this island,
01:00:03as did Lewis Moyer earlier on today.
01:00:06As we talked about, it's such a rallying heartland here.
01:00:10So many different rallies that traverse the island
01:00:13across the year.
01:00:20Yeah, another of our Citroen runners.
01:00:23Of course, we've got a Citroen C3 leading the way in WRC2.
01:00:25John Russell still looking comfortable
01:00:29with another Spaniard in Cachon.
01:00:34Doing his best to keep him honest.
01:00:39Yeah, we've seen Monsano as we compete over the years
01:00:42in that, doing really well in the European competition,
01:00:45even in his extended years recently.
01:00:48Yeah, absolutely.
01:00:49And, yeah, it's been fantastic to watch him.
01:00:53It was an early bath for him last year
01:00:54in the ERC on the island.
01:00:56But good to see him back,
01:00:57and, you know, how proud he is
01:00:59that WRC is now here this time around.
01:01:03Was it Monsano that went off in the Super Special?
01:01:05Yeah, I do remember that one, yeah.
01:01:09Yeah, first stage of the event last year.
01:01:11So he comes through with a 15.28.6,
01:01:13that's 16.9 behind Dominguez.
01:01:17Louis, hi, tell me how things are going.
01:01:27Yeah, the stage is very difficult
01:01:29because it's very slippery,
01:01:31and we have a different changes in the setting,
01:01:35but at the end, the result is not so good.
01:01:39Sorry.
01:01:41He's not happy with his performance through that one.
01:01:44We do have, of course, more stages to go this afternoon.
01:01:46Another two long stages before that short,
01:01:50super special stage back here in Las Palmas.
01:01:55Oliver Solberg now.
01:01:56Yeah, of course, we saw Oliver, didn't we?
01:02:02Again, like the two Estonians competing,
01:02:05he's not nominated this one.
01:02:07The point's very much a sort of testing process, really,
01:02:11a learning one.
01:02:12And a good thing, really,
01:02:12because obviously he had transmission issues yesterday.
01:02:15Yeah, yeah.
01:02:15He nursed the car through yesterday afternoon stages.
01:02:19He will be back,
01:02:21assuming he's going to be scoring points
01:02:23at the Rally of Portugal,
01:02:23already entered for that one.
01:02:25Do you know what?
01:02:25You caught me off guard earlier.
01:02:27I was listening to your interviews up in the media's earlier
01:02:29when you said we're not back on tarmac till October.
01:02:31No, it's bizarre.
01:02:32I questioned you.
01:02:33I checked the calendar.
01:02:34Bex, how dare you?
01:02:34I had zero faith in you, PK.
01:02:37I wouldn't have said it if I had to check it first.
01:02:39I doubted myself, so you're not the only one.
01:02:42I know, it just seems bizarre.
01:02:43I'm running seven gravel events now.
01:02:45That's incredible, isn't it?
01:02:46Yeah, yeah.
01:02:46It's a long stretch of gravel.
01:02:49Let's find out how the experience building is going,
01:02:51then, with Oliver.
01:02:55I'm not used to seeing you as little as I am this weekend, Oliver.
01:03:02Nice to catch up.
01:03:03How is today going so far?
01:03:04Around four seconds down in here.
01:03:06Yeah, I didn't do this stage in the morning
01:03:08because it was canceled.
01:03:09So, some places are a bit tricky,
01:03:12but I felt good.
01:03:14You know, it was not bad.
01:03:15I tried to take care of the tire a little bit
01:03:17because it was so abrasive,
01:03:19moving much more than I was expecting,
01:03:21but, yeah, it's okay.
01:03:24Are there good improvements, do you feel,
01:03:25with the car on Tarmac?
01:03:30It's okay.
01:03:32Does the body language speak louder than words there?
01:03:35Yeah, but it's more than I guess.
01:03:35It's the four fastest time,
01:03:37you know, obviously not nominated,
01:03:38but of the rally, two runners.
01:03:40So, that's not to be sniffed at
01:03:41considering the Tarmac pedigree
01:03:43of the people that are ahead of him
01:03:45are Russell, Cashon, and Leo Russell.
01:03:49So, you know, and then it's Oliver.
01:03:51So, he's certainly making big steps forward.
01:03:53The fans enjoying the sunshine now.
01:03:55Yeah, you just missed some of the fans
01:03:56putting some sun lotion on.
01:03:58What a difference to the guys
01:03:59that are on our footage,
01:04:01which are just by the trees in the shade
01:04:03who are in their coats.
01:04:04I was shoveling it on yesterday, Bex.
01:04:05It's pretty hot up there.
01:04:07It's kind of bizarre to say
01:04:09when it's so different over here.
01:04:12Fabio Schwartz then coming through next.
01:04:14I think this is the beauty of the island, though.
01:04:16You know, we've been pretty lucky this weekend
01:04:18not to have massive rainfall.
01:04:21You know, we've all been here
01:04:22in terms of the ERC
01:04:24when it has been raining on the island
01:04:26and it can just start torrential rain
01:04:28out of absolutely nowhere
01:04:30and really catch you out
01:04:32if you're on the wrong tyre choice.
01:04:34But we seem to have avoided that this weekend.
01:04:38Big step up, isn't it,
01:04:38for Fabio Bex after, you know,
01:04:40genius last year,
01:04:41stepping up to WRC2, of course.
01:04:43Very famous father.
01:04:44It always comes with its own sort of pressure,
01:04:47doesn't it,
01:04:47when you've got a recognisable surname.
01:04:50You know, he's still talking
01:04:51of the likes of Robin Perra and Solberg.
01:04:53Solberg a moment ago
01:04:54for obviously Armin Schwartz,
01:04:57a memorable driver
01:05:00from the late 90s and early 2000s
01:05:02for Skoda, etc.
01:05:06But, of course,
01:05:07it's all about the learning now.
01:05:12It's their debut, actually,
01:05:13isn't it,
01:05:14in the WRC2 this weekend.
01:05:17He took on one sort of
01:05:18local rally in Germany,
01:05:20the back end of last year
01:05:21in the Toyota Rally 2.
01:05:23So, again,
01:05:25another young driver
01:05:27doing all his bits to learn.
01:05:29He's only 20 years old.
01:05:39Fabio,
01:05:39building experience
01:05:40on tarmac
01:05:41with this car.
01:05:42How's it going
01:05:42so far today?
01:05:44Rather difficult.
01:05:46We tried some big change
01:05:47in setup-wise,
01:05:49but it didn't work out
01:05:50and it feels like
01:05:51we're just transferring
01:05:52the problem
01:05:53one to another.
01:05:54So, yeah,
01:05:56difficult to find
01:05:57a rhythm
01:05:57with that setup.
01:05:58What sort of change
01:05:59did you make
01:06:00that didn't work?
01:06:01We made the cast softer,
01:06:03but, yeah,
01:06:04now the whole car
01:06:05is all over the place
01:06:06as soon as the tyres
01:06:07start to rain.
01:06:08So, yeah,
01:06:10it seems nothing really works.
01:06:15Difficult, then,
01:06:16certainly,
01:06:17for Fabio Schwartz.
01:06:20Yeah, I mean,
01:06:21it's a sort of statement
01:06:24we're hearing
01:06:25over and over again,
01:06:26isn't it?
01:06:26It's even at the
01:06:28sports top level.
01:06:30Bento Rodriguez
01:06:30next to come through
01:06:33in the Skoda.
01:06:3815th place overall
01:06:40in the WRC2 category
01:06:42coming into this one.
01:06:43Great to see so many
01:06:45local drivers.
01:06:46We've still got 29
01:06:47of the WRC2 field running.
01:06:50It's quite incredible.
01:06:52I'm hearing as well
01:06:54the entry list
01:06:54in Portugal
01:06:55is even greater,
01:06:57Bex.
01:06:58And I'm hearing
01:06:58lovely noises
01:07:00about a few
01:07:01very famous names
01:07:03such as
01:07:03Chris Meek
01:07:04and Danny Sordo,
01:07:05Bex,
01:07:06I'm hearing
01:07:06on that WRC2 entry list.
01:07:08How much fun
01:07:09are we going to have
01:07:09in a few weeks
01:07:10in Porto?
01:07:11Yeah,
01:07:12it's always a good entry,
01:07:14isn't it,
01:07:15in Portugal?
01:07:15It does conjure up
01:07:16a brilliant entry list
01:07:17every year
01:07:18and it's sounding
01:07:19particularly fantastic
01:07:20this time around.
01:07:21Roberto Rodriguez
01:07:22completes then.
01:07:24And if you are just
01:07:24joining us for our coverage,
01:07:25we're on stage 10.
01:07:26It's the first stage
01:07:27of the afternoon.
01:07:28We've got another
01:07:28three stages to go
01:07:30after this one.
01:07:35Molly Pettit
01:07:36is at the stop control
01:07:37chatting to the drivers
01:07:38for us.
01:07:39Let's cross out to her.
01:07:41Roberto,
01:07:42good afternoon.
01:07:43How are things going?
01:07:44Spanish.
01:07:45It's fine.
01:07:45Spanish.
01:07:46Spanish.
01:07:47Sí.
01:07:48Bueno,
01:07:49la primera no la pudimos
01:07:51correr,
01:07:51pero ahora bien,
01:07:52hicimos unos reglajes
01:07:53y parece que están funcionando.
01:07:55Gracias.
01:07:56Gracias.
01:07:57Yeah,
01:07:57so he said,
01:07:58like Oliver,
01:07:59you know,
01:07:59they couldn't get through
01:08:00the first one
01:08:01earlier on today
01:08:02because it was cancelled
01:08:04after the Vervés incident,
01:08:05but this run through
01:08:06was pretty good.
01:08:07Yes,
01:08:07it's great.
01:08:08I'm so happy
01:08:08you learned Spanish
01:08:09in the offseason
01:08:10the other year,
01:08:11Bex,
01:08:11and I'm really,
01:08:13really impressed
01:08:13at your dedication
01:08:14to the school.
01:08:14I like to apply myself.
01:08:16Yeah,
01:08:16it's fantastic.
01:08:18Thank you,
01:08:18Ed.
01:08:19It's the...
01:08:20Anyway,
01:08:21Robert Juergensen,
01:08:23did you want to
01:08:24be your champion?
01:08:24It is a funny story
01:08:25because PK did actually
01:08:27think that I'd learned
01:08:28Spanish because I was
01:08:29translating so aptly,
01:08:30but our director
01:08:31just happens to be
01:08:32a multi-talented
01:08:34speaker of many,
01:08:36many languages,
01:08:36not just his own
01:08:37Spanish,
01:08:38but many others,
01:08:39and he helps me out
01:08:39every now and again.
01:08:40Anyway,
01:08:41I think my Estonian
01:08:43is probably better
01:08:44than our directors,
01:08:45so we'll go with that.
01:08:46I think you ordered me
01:08:47dinner tomorrow night,
01:08:47Bex.
01:08:48Robert Juergensen
01:08:49is who we're looking
01:08:50at now,
01:08:51and it was a very early
01:08:51bath for him yesterday
01:08:52as well,
01:08:53wasn't it?
01:08:53He was off into
01:08:54an Armco barrier
01:08:55yesterday.
01:08:55Yeah, and he had a really
01:08:55frustrating start as well,
01:08:57and the engine,
01:08:58he had to change the
01:08:59engine before they
01:08:59even got going.
01:09:01But what a promising
01:09:02youngster he is,
01:09:03you know,
01:09:03such success last year
01:09:05in the junior WRC,
01:09:06part of the FIA
01:09:07Rally Star program,
01:09:09which has just shown
01:09:10what a fantastic project
01:09:12it has been
01:09:13over the past few years
01:09:15because he is
01:09:16hugely successful,
01:09:17and he pays a lot
01:09:19of homage
01:09:19to the program itself.
01:09:24Romain, finally
01:09:25we get to catch up
01:09:26this weekend.
01:09:27You had a bit of a shock
01:09:28or a shakedown.
01:09:28It's great to see
01:09:29that you're back out there.
01:09:30How are things
01:09:31going so far?
01:09:32Yeah, we missed
01:09:34completely yesterday,
01:09:35so for us
01:09:36it's been quite a struggle.
01:09:38It's our third stage
01:09:39that we have finished
01:09:40this weekend,
01:09:41so yeah,
01:09:42it's coming slowly,
01:09:43but I mean,
01:09:44still, there's so much
01:09:45to learn and still
01:09:47missing a lot of commitment.
01:09:50Yeah, he's very much
01:09:51here to learn, isn't he,
01:09:52as a lot of these
01:09:53young drivers are.
01:09:55And great to see
01:09:55that Fiesta Rally 2
01:09:56still going strong as well.
01:09:58We saw John Armstrong
01:09:59as well,
01:10:01going great guns,
01:10:02isn't he,
01:10:03in the European Championship.
01:10:05Just had a bit
01:10:06of a frustrating outing
01:10:07a couple of weeks
01:10:08back on the mainland.
01:10:10Giovanni Trentin
01:10:12of Italy
01:10:12coming through next.
01:10:17He's only 15 and a half
01:10:20seconds behind
01:10:21Rodriguez,
01:10:23who we saw
01:10:23come through moments ago
01:10:25coming into this one.
01:10:26We talk about young drivers.
01:10:28Giovanni's only 18 years of age.
01:10:30Goodness.
01:10:32He's actually had
01:10:32a really good run in here,
01:10:33Bex.
01:10:34He's 9.2 seconds
01:10:35quicker than Rodriguez
01:10:37as we come into
01:10:39the last sequence
01:10:40of corners.
01:10:43That's the fight
01:10:44for what is
01:10:4415th place.
01:10:51Start them young,
01:10:52don't they,
01:10:52in Italy.
01:10:52We thought
01:10:53we thought Dapra
01:10:54was young,
01:10:55having his 24th birthday
01:10:56yesterday.
01:10:59I was going to say
01:11:00something,
01:11:00I'm not going to say it.
01:11:01With regards to age,
01:11:02I'm not going to say it.
01:11:03I'm just not
01:11:04taking it all back.
01:11:05But Giovanni,
01:11:06we're going to see him
01:11:07in Portugal
01:11:07in a few weeks' time
01:11:08and a lot of these drivers,
01:11:10yeah,
01:11:10they're building
01:11:11their confidence
01:11:12and as Romit said
01:11:13just now,
01:11:14you know,
01:11:14it's really hard
01:11:15to get the commitment level
01:11:16when you've missed
01:11:16a day out there
01:11:17and that's the disappointing
01:11:19factor for Romit
01:11:20is that he's missed
01:11:21a whole day
01:11:22of precious competition
01:11:23and training
01:11:24but for Giovanni,
01:11:25he is racking it up
01:11:27under his belt
01:11:27right now
01:11:28to find out
01:11:28how he's feeling.
01:11:299.2 seconds
01:11:30quicker than Rodriguez.
01:11:38Giovanni,
01:11:39how are things
01:11:40going this afternoon?
01:11:42It's not bad.
01:11:44We are trying
01:11:46to improve
01:11:47step by step
01:11:48and stage by stage
01:11:49and I think
01:11:51that this stage
01:11:52was better
01:11:54than this morning
01:11:55so we have to
01:11:56keep like this.
01:11:58What's it like
01:11:59driving this car?
01:12:00It's very good
01:12:02and cool
01:12:02but in some parts
01:12:06it's difficult
01:12:06so you have to be
01:12:07focused
01:12:08and yeah,
01:12:10and good.
01:12:11Grazie.
01:12:12Are you sure
01:12:13he's 18?
01:12:15He looks a lot younger
01:12:17doesn't he,
01:12:17right?
01:12:18I'm going to
01:12:19check for his ID
01:12:20before he gets
01:12:20in the car
01:12:21in Portugal
01:12:21but I'm checking.
01:12:22Yeah,
01:12:23what a pleasant
01:12:23young man.
01:12:24Very good English
01:12:25as well.
01:12:27You are really
01:12:28showing your age
01:12:29in that statement.
01:12:30What a pleasant
01:12:31young man.
01:12:32You are.
01:12:35Anyway,
01:12:36Antonio Forney,
01:12:36another local
01:12:37driver in the Skoda.
01:12:44Yeah,
01:12:45we saw Antonio
01:12:46at Rally La Lana
01:12:47which was the event
01:12:49prior to Sierra
01:12:50Morena
01:12:50which a lot
01:12:51of the drivers
01:12:52who competed
01:12:52in that ERC round
01:12:54competed on
01:12:54to get a little bit
01:12:56of experience.
01:12:56Oh, wow.
01:12:57Very right there.
01:12:58Just clipped
01:12:59that sort of
01:13:00roadside bollard
01:13:01didn't he?
01:13:01Hopefully
01:13:02no harm done
01:13:03on the right
01:13:04it would have been
01:13:05the right rear
01:13:05corner I think.
01:13:06Let's see if we can get
01:13:07a look
01:13:07as he comes
01:13:08around the last
01:13:09couple of quarters
01:13:09thinks he's
01:13:10got away with it.
01:13:11Yeah, I think he has.
01:13:12bollards, isn't it?
01:13:13That's probably the most
01:13:14amount of actual
01:13:15live drama
01:13:16we've seen
01:13:17this weekend.
01:13:18Yeah, he got away
01:13:19with one there
01:13:20and there's
01:13:20a nasty looking
01:13:21wall just
01:13:23the other side
01:13:24of it
01:13:24but he does
01:13:25survive.
01:13:27Let's just see
01:13:27if we can get
01:13:28another look.
01:13:28Let's take a look
01:13:29at it again.
01:13:32It's just really
01:13:33wide there, isn't it?
01:13:34There's also
01:13:34all that sea
01:13:36of pine needles
01:13:38that something
01:13:39waxed off
01:13:39that right
01:13:39rear corner
01:13:40but yeah,
01:13:42that could have
01:13:42been a lot
01:13:43worse.
01:13:44Got the lines
01:13:45all wrong
01:13:46there.
01:13:48But he got away
01:13:48with it.
01:13:49Yeah, just about.
01:13:53Yeah, so we can
01:13:53just see the
01:13:54damage to the front
01:13:55there where he
01:13:56skirted the
01:13:57Yeah, it's actually
01:13:57the front corner
01:13:58not the rear corner
01:13:59wasn't it?
01:13:59Yeah.
01:14:04A little bit of
01:14:06car
01:14:06disappeared
01:14:07but that fan's
01:14:07got it.
01:14:08Yeah, difficult
01:14:09situation.
01:14:11I have a lot
01:14:12of gravel
01:14:13in the turn
01:14:13and I don't
01:14:15have in the
01:14:16note
01:14:16and arrived
01:14:17to
01:14:18it's completely
01:14:19normal
01:14:20and I have
01:14:21a little bit
01:14:22of understeering
01:14:22and I go to
01:14:23the little bit
01:14:24outside
01:14:24but no problem.
01:14:27The car looks
01:14:27okay.
01:14:28Yeah, everything
01:14:29okay.
01:14:31Yeah, and you've
01:14:31got one happy
01:14:32fan out there
01:14:33but like you
01:14:33said he's just
01:14:33been caught
01:14:34out on a little
01:14:34bit of gravel
01:14:35there he didn't
01:14:35have in his
01:14:36notes and you
01:14:37mentioned the
01:14:37pine needles
01:14:38as well which
01:14:38are on the
01:14:39ground there
01:14:39they can be
01:14:40super super
01:14:40slippy.
01:14:41I can testify
01:14:42to that actually.
01:14:43Oh really?
01:14:43Yeah, I slipped
01:14:44on I won't tell
01:14:46you exactly what
01:14:46I was doing
01:14:47I was just going
01:14:47through the trees
01:14:48and I've got a
01:14:49bit of a cut
01:14:49on my finger
01:14:50from slipping
01:14:51on those pine
01:14:52needles so I
01:14:52can testify
01:14:53to their
01:14:54slipperiness
01:14:55especially
01:14:55one on a
01:14:56really steep
01:14:56bank
01:14:57I might add
01:14:58but yeah
01:14:58that's another
01:14:59story.
01:15:00Another local
01:15:00driver in
01:15:01Juan Carlos
01:15:02Quintana
01:15:02I'm really
01:15:07loving
01:15:07your pronunciation
01:15:08great to see
01:15:15another of these
01:15:15wonderful liveries
01:15:18really classic
01:15:19colours here
01:15:20yeah
01:15:22we just saw
01:15:23with the driver
01:15:25before
01:15:25huge amount
01:15:26of experience
01:15:26Juan Carlos
01:15:27Quintana
01:15:27has got
01:15:28because
01:15:28he's competed
01:15:30in over
01:15:31150 events
01:15:32he's won
01:15:33multiple
01:15:34events here
01:15:36on the island
01:15:37on Grand Canaria
01:15:38in the Canary
01:15:38Islands
01:15:38championship
01:15:39and I think
01:15:41you know
01:15:41for many
01:15:42many people
01:15:42we see them
01:15:44competing in the
01:15:44ERC as well
01:15:45but to have
01:15:46WRC come to the
01:15:47islands
01:15:47for the first
01:15:48time
01:15:49to be here
01:15:49on Grand Canaria
01:15:50it's a huge
01:15:51thing
01:15:52and everyone
01:15:52is just going
01:15:53to be getting
01:15:53the entry in
01:15:54yeah
01:15:54absolutely
01:15:55what a driver
01:15:55I'm not sure
01:15:56we're going to have
01:15:56time for
01:15:56what happened
01:15:57to Philip Allen
01:15:57today
01:15:58he's a
01:15:58he went
01:15:59OTL
01:16:00earlier on
01:16:01I missed that
01:16:01it's a shame
01:16:02he was having a
01:16:03good run
01:16:03in the top 10
01:16:04he really was
01:16:04yeah
01:16:05hola
01:16:10Juan Carlos
01:16:11how is it going
01:16:12hello
01:16:13how is it going
01:16:15in Espanol
01:16:16we're very
01:16:18very
01:16:19in some
01:16:21places
01:16:21especially
01:16:21in the
01:16:22final
01:16:22but
01:16:23well
01:16:23good
01:16:24this morning
01:16:25we didn't
01:16:26have the opportunity
01:16:27to do it
01:16:27and now
01:16:28we're coming
01:16:28on the
01:16:29notes
01:16:30trying to do it
01:16:31well
01:16:32and we're
01:16:32knowing that
01:16:33the last
01:16:34area had
01:16:34been hit
01:16:35and the last
01:16:36area was
01:16:37pretty dirty
01:16:37but our goal
01:16:38is to run
01:16:39and continue
01:16:40doing the
01:16:40kilometers
01:16:41thank you
01:16:41thank you
01:16:42take it away
01:16:43Bex
01:16:43he said
01:16:44he had to be
01:16:45very careful
01:16:45in there
01:16:45and the knowledge
01:16:46that obviously
01:16:47Verves had
01:16:47an incident
01:16:48this morning
01:16:49but he wants
01:16:50to get
01:16:50more kilometers
01:16:51under his belt
01:16:52it was a good
01:16:52run
01:16:53but in the
01:16:53back of his
01:16:53mind
01:16:54was obviously
01:16:55that people
01:16:56had made a
01:16:56mistake earlier
01:16:57on today
01:16:57Kale Rovenpera
01:16:59then
01:16:59I may as well
01:17:01just record my
01:17:02voice saying
01:17:02Kale Rovenpera
01:17:03was fastest
01:17:04through and we
01:17:04can just play it
01:17:05out for the rest
01:17:06of the stages
01:17:0614.23.8
01:17:09the time for
01:17:09Kale Rovenpera
01:17:10that's 10
01:17:11stages now
01:17:12Ogier
01:17:131.2 seconds
01:17:15behind that
01:17:15time
01:17:16Sammy Pyrie
01:17:16continuing to have
01:17:18a great run
01:17:19on the island
01:17:20on the island
01:17:20was third
01:17:21fastest
01:17:21through
01:17:22so that's
01:17:2310 stages
01:17:24done
01:17:25out of a
01:17:25total of
01:17:2518 here
01:17:26overall
01:17:27Rovenpera
01:17:28is leading
01:17:28by 38.1
01:17:29seconds
01:17:30over Ogier
01:17:31with Elvin
01:17:31Evans
01:17:32in third
01:17:32position
01:17:33that gap
01:17:34is widening
01:17:34between Ogier
01:17:35and Evans
01:17:36it's now
01:17:36up to
01:17:3623.7
01:17:38seconds
01:17:38Sammy Pyrie
01:17:39is fourth
01:17:40and is
01:17:41extending
01:17:43his advantage
01:17:44over Katsuta
01:17:45it's up to
01:17:4510.3
01:17:46seconds
01:17:47now
01:17:47Katsuta
01:17:47fifth
01:17:48Adrian Formo
01:17:49is in
01:17:49sixth
