00:00What's your name?
00:07Adam Van Wickler.
00:08And what company are you with?
00:09We're 3D Systems General Giant Studios.
00:11And what do you do?
00:12Because I just jumped into the VR stuff, so what's the best way to describe what you do?
00:15So we do 3D scanning, 3D sculpting, 3D printing.
00:20Our company is, there's three different divisions.
00:23We have our General Giant LTD, where we're actually taking out licenses ourselves and
00:27making product, so you can see here.
00:30World of Warcraft is one of the licenses we have.
00:32We also have Marvel, Star Wars, and we're making high-end collectibles.
00:36Then you have the external services department, which is myself and Pauly Schreier here,
00:41where companies like Hasbro and Mattel are hiring us, and we're sculpting for them.
00:46We're doing action figures like Marvel Legends or Mattel WWE,
00:50and we're creating product for other companies.
00:53But if I'm seeing this work product from like some roadruns or something like that,
00:56is this just what they haven't used before from their production, or how are you working with this?
01:01Well, our digital division...
01:02Are you the Indian deal?
01:03Well, that's it.
01:04The third leg of our company is our digital department.
01:09So we're going on set and we're scanning.
01:11We're actually in the UK right now scanning new Star Wars movies.
01:15So we're creating digital assets that are then used for special effects purposes in the movies.
01:20But then we also have those assets that we can create product ourselves,
01:24and we can create product for other people.
01:26Was this unused product before?
01:28Were people just doing all the special effects for work,
01:31and they weren't actually creating product with it, or was it just ripping it out?
01:35Well, this company, Gentle Giant Studios, was founded about 20 years ago,
01:41and Carl, the owner of the company, kind of started putting this together as far as like,
01:46hey, everyone's doing this all separately, but doing it all together in one place makes a lot of sense.
01:53So that's why about four years ago we were acquired by 3D Systems,
01:57which is the world's largest manufacturer of 3D printers.
02:01So now we're their entertainment division doing the same work that we've always done,
02:05but with the power of 3D Systems behind us.
02:08And my original question when I first met you was,
02:10were you guys going to get into VR now?
02:12Because obviously you already have all the renderings for virtual reality and VR and stuff.
02:17Right.
02:18Well, to answer your question, we're not doing any VR work ourselves,
02:22but we create assets that can be utilized for them.
02:26So if somebody had a game, they wanted to create something,
02:28they could, they could come to you, take your assets, and then create something from that.
02:32Exactly.
02:33How do they find out more information about what you guys have?
02:35They can go to our website, which is right here,
02:37and our email addresses are right here on the brochure.
02:40Go to JennaGiantStudios.com.
02:43So check it out.
02:45Was this created in 3D models?
02:46No, no.
02:47So this is the TIE Fighter from The Force Awakens.
02:50So this is the TIE Fighter that Finn and Poe took out, stole for the escape.
02:56It's the two-seater.
02:57So it's basically just a cutaway.
02:59We took assets from the movie itself, and we just created this,
03:03and it's showcasing one of our types of printers.
03:05When I'm looking at this Rogue One-like picture here,
03:07how long does it take to trick actually this type of, like this?
03:10So we would have scanned the helmet itself. Scanning doesn't take that long.
03:15You're talking about like 30 seconds to scan an object.
03:18That object is not perfect.
03:20So what we then do is a digital artist will go in and retapologize the entire thing.
03:24So it's basically resurfacing the model and making a perfect version, utilizing the scan data.
03:31So then once you have that, you can 3D print it at any size.
03:36So this is obviously a life size.
03:38How much would that go for a life size?
03:39Well, this one, I mean, this one is actually tricky because this is specifically the Star Wars Rogue One helmet that we created for Nissan.
03:49So if you buy a Nissan Rogue, the car, which is like $40,000, you get a helmet.
03:56I would think I would get a helmet.
03:58Yeah, exactly.
03:59You buy a brand new car, you get a helmet.
04:01So it varies in all honesty.
04:03If I return the car and just get the helmet.
04:06I don't know.
04:07Maybe you can get away with that.
04:09Give it a shot.
04:10Okay.
04:11But that's pretty tight though.
04:13That's pretty tight.
04:14It's cool.
04:15It's a lot of fun.
