00:00This is not a game. This is a 12-week job interview. It's a dog-eat-dog situation.
00:13Fourteen people have come to London in search of a job.
00:18There is no phone-in here. There is no text number. There is no panel of judges.
00:25I'm the one that decides who gets fired and I'm going to be the one ultimately who decides who gets hired.
00:33They've come to battle it out for a job with Sir Alan Sugar.
00:37I am the most belligerent person that you could ever come across.
00:41Tough and straight-talking, Sir Alan's built a business empire worth 800 million pounds.
00:48Business is not about come in, piss my money up the wall.
00:52He's offering one job with a six-figure salary.
00:56To get it, they're going to have to live and work together.
01:00Don't fucking dick me around. I'm getting pissed off with it.
01:03Quite frankly, I'd like to get rid of the bleeding free of you.
01:06This is the ultimate job interview.
01:09You're fired. You're fired. You're a lightweight. You're fired.
01:20Good morning.
01:21Last week...
01:22You are going to be selling second-hand cars to real customers.
01:26I've had a lot of people in my life say to me you should be a car salesman.
01:29The teams were taken to a giant car supermarket.
01:34Ansel's team started well.
01:36Let's go into the deal then. Fantastic.
01:39Great.
01:41But ended in disarray.
01:43What have you been doing for four hours?
01:44Sell some cars.
01:45Bullshit.
01:46On the other side...
01:47Why don't you just go ahead and do that and we will go ahead and do that.
01:49Said! You just go and sell, please.
01:51Project manager Sharon struggled with her team.
01:54He's wanting to stand at the end of the car.
01:56How can he know what he's doing? He's never done this before.
01:58The boys aren't listening to me because they know I don't know anything about cars.
02:03Where's our project manager anywhere?
02:05She's crying somewhere.
02:06I really do think that we've lost.
02:10In the boardroom, Sharon came under fire.
02:13In terms of Sharon saying that we wasn't backing her,
02:16I would probably question what there was to back.
02:18The result stunned everyone. Sharon won.
02:23Cheers. Cheers.
02:26But victory soon turned sour.
02:28Tell me one thing that I said about Sharon and I will back off like I said.
02:31You're talking absolute shit.
02:33Fuck off. You're not even listening to me, Paul.
02:35I think as a team, I think we're pretty much finished.
02:39In the boardroom, Ansel brought Joe and Sam back to face the music.
02:44Samuel, do you think if you weren't there, it would have made any difference?
02:47There is a message coming from above.
02:50Joe, you've been here too many times. You are fired.
02:56I was sort of expecting this because I accept the fact that I've been here four times.
03:00I should be leaving here.
03:01Joe, Joe, there comes a time when everybody, everybody is saying enough's enough.
03:06Joe, you're fired. You're going to have to go.
03:09Can I just ask one more time, just to give me the one more last chance?
03:12I'm afraid not. No, I'm afraid not. That's it. Back to the house now.
03:18Joe became the sixth casualty of the boardroom.
03:22Now eight remain to fight for the chance to become The Apprentice.
03:27At the house, the candidates try to guess who's been fired.
03:36From what I saw, which was not a lot, but Joe doesn't seem to have done anything wrong.
03:40My good feeling says Samuel's gone.
03:42I think Samuel, and I don't want it to be really, but then I think it's going to be Samuel.
03:47Where are the folks coming from?
03:48That's the way, mate.
03:50Cheers, pal.
03:53Well done!
03:57Lovely, thank you very much.
04:06Hello?
04:07The cars are on the way to pick you up, and we'll be there in 20 minutes.
04:10They're taking you to Chigwell School.
04:12OK, that's brilliant. Thanks. Bye.
04:15We're going to a school, Chigwell school, and we're leaving in 20 minutes.
04:2020 minutes?
04:21Yeah, the cars are on their way.
04:23They're going to be taught to listen.
04:26If it's a high school, they will totally end our earlier, rip us to shreds.
04:31Chigwell offers the type of schooling Sir Alan never had.
04:49He's here to tell the students hard work and qualifications are what matter.
04:53Let's have a reality check here, because here's what happens in the real world.
04:57The first thing they're going to look at is what they got, what she got, what he got, that's it.
05:02No qualifications in the bin. Simple as that.
05:07And it's hard work that he's got in store for the candidates.
05:15Good afternoon.
05:16Good afternoon, Sir Alan.
05:17Now, you might be wondering what you're doing here.
05:19I've just finished giving a pep talk to a whole group of sixth formers,
05:24and interestingly enough, the large section of that audience
05:27are going to be your target consumer for the next task.
05:30Now, two of you, from my recollection, have not been team managers.
05:35Michelle and Dunn.
05:37So, you three, out of those two, who would you like to lead your team?
05:43We'd like Michelle, please, Sir Alan.
05:45Michelle, step over there.
05:47The good friend of mine, Mr. Philip Green, arguably Britain's greatest retailer.
05:56He has given us Topshop Oxford Street.
06:00He's sectioned off an area, especially for you.
06:03You're going to select your own ranges of merchandise targeted for young girls.
06:08The day after, you're going to put it all on display in your own sections,
06:13and you're open to the public.
06:15Pole position, Oxford Circus, the greatest retailing pitch in this country.
06:21And it's very simple.
06:23The team that ends up taking the most amount of money is going to win,
06:27and the team that doesn't, one of you, will get fired.
06:31Over the next 48 hours, the teams will be thrown into the centre of Britain's retail trade.
06:39This is the largest clothing store in Europe.
06:42100,000 square feet of retail space.
06:46Visited by a quarter of a million shoppers every week.
06:50It's all about fashion. Fashion is fickle.
06:52You know, one minute, you've got the right product, it sells like hot potatoes.
06:56The next minute, you wouldn't be seen dead in it.
06:59And that's why the skill in this task is choosing the right merchandise.
07:05To help them choose, Sir Alan's found each team a focus group.
07:10We all in? Yep.
07:11So we've prepared a list of questions. We've got an hour to go through them.
07:14Six form girls from Chigwell School are typical customers.
07:19They could offer a unique insight into the task ahead.
07:22What is the kind of look at the minute? What is what's trendy?
07:25In the winter, it's going into more like military style now.
07:28If you were going to go to Topshop and he's going to go on Saturday, what would you be buying?
07:32It's all the like, like the jackets and stuff that have like the sort of like double buttons
07:36that make it look like a sailor outfit or like a...
07:38Okay, all right.
07:39Yeah, it's just...
07:40Pettit jackets and stuff.
07:41Yeah.
07:42Are you thinking about buying that kind of stuff or within the next week?
07:45Yeah, yeah.
07:46What we really need to know is kind of what Topshop's all about.
07:50So this is an opportunity for you guys just to talk about clothes.
07:52Dun's boys have fashion expert Sharon on board.
07:56But with 14 teenage girls to chat up, she's sidelined.
08:00What don't you like from a sales point?
08:02You know you get the sales assistants who are actually on the floor.
08:06What don't you like?
08:07What approach don't you like?
08:08I like advice, but I hope if you push me, I don't like that.
08:12Come on, let's go.
08:13Yeah, no, the pushyness.
08:14It might be that there has to be two people out of our team on the shop floor helping,
08:18actually helping the girls find the clothes.
08:20How would you feel about that if lads were serving everyone at home?
08:23Yeah, whenever a room at home.
08:24I prefer a gay guy.
08:28That's absolutely fine.
08:33It's too laddy.
08:34Too much of a man.
08:36Too much of a man, yeah.
08:38Sue me.
08:39I like pink shirt.
08:41Thanks, girls.
08:42See ya.
08:43Nice.
08:44See ya.
08:45I got a shitload from that.
08:46Did you?
08:47Yeah, it was brilliant.
08:48That coat thing is a big thing.
08:49The winter coat and the jumpers, they will spend money on.
08:52The hats, the scarves.
08:53Accessories was massive as well.
08:55It was.
09:022.30pm, Oxford Circus.
09:06The store's laid on a fashion show of its four main lines.
09:11A military-inspired range called Admiralty.
09:16Modern Oriental.
09:20A retro style called Aviator.
09:24And all black, gothic fairy tone.
09:28Each team can sell two lines.
09:30Having heard the focus group and seen the clothes,
09:33they must choose items that'll appeal to shoppers, but won't clash when mixed.
09:37The teams have an hour to decide, behind closed doors.
09:43What are we saying? Admiralty and gothic?
09:47Or am I putting words into people's mouths?
09:49I would go with you.
09:51Um, okay, I don't.
09:52The stronger ranges are Admiralty and Aviator.
09:57Let's get a consensus in the room first of which ones I'm going to be negotiated for,
10:00because Samuel's not in agreement.
10:01I would like to be able to have a style that'll take you from casual to dressy,
10:05just by sticking on this sequin valera, looking you can go to the party now, that kind of thing.
10:09Yeah.
10:10Um, and I think what the girls was talking about, they wanted coats, they wanted jumpers, they wanted handbags.
10:15Which one is the most important that we get at the four?
10:18Gothic.
10:19I'd still go for Admiralty and Aviator, but I'll obviously agree and support, so I'm happy to go on with that.
10:29If we're going to go for a casual, then Navy and Aviator.
10:34Cool.
10:35So those are the two, yeah?
10:36You could mix gothic and Aviator together.
10:38I'm not really a big fan of the Aviator, I think it's a bit boring.
10:43So the two that I'd go for is the Admiral and the Modern Oriental, to mix it, really mix it up.
10:49If it comes back and haunts me, the boardroom comes back and haunts me, but I stand by this,
10:53that I genuinely do not think that the Oriental is going to look good.
10:57Very quickly, with all four options, it seems to me that the Modern Oriental is the only option that we have
11:03that offers different colours.
11:04Now, a lot of girls, when I go out shopping, especially when I'm out going to bars and restaurants,
11:08I see a lot of colourful stuff, and I appreciate it, I know my friends appreciate it,
11:12so therefore I'd really push that.
11:15To be honest, I bought a beautiful Oriental top, and of what it wants,
11:18it was really hard to wear it with my jeans, it was really hard to get a skirt in that.
11:21We had to sell it for the weekend.
11:22I know, but, yeah, I realise that.
11:24I think Sharon has the fashion knowledge and the expertise, but I can't stand her smugness.
11:29But hopefully, on the sales floor, it would be our turn to really turn it on and sell,
11:35because that's not something that Sharon does.
11:37I think we've had her input in a lot of things, and I don't think we need any more.
11:40Basically, ideally, first and second choice, Admirality and Gothic fairy tale,
11:45with some colourful accessories to bring the range up.
11:48Cheers.
11:49It was interesting when they were discussing the Rangers,
11:51that they weren't prepared to take what she suggested as a given.
11:55In fact, I think their instinct was to go for something else.
11:58They haven't sat back and said, you choose it, Sharon,
12:02which I think I would have done had I been them,
12:04because if she gets it right, fine, and if she doesn't, it's all her fault.
12:06But they haven't been taking it that way.
12:08The teams must tell Nick and Margaret what they've chosen.
12:12If they've both gone for the same lines, they'll have to negotiate.
12:17Dun will negotiate for his team,
12:20while Michelle has nominated Ruth to negotiate for her.
12:24What's your first choice?
12:26We want Gothic.
12:27Gothic's your first choice?
12:29Yeah.
12:30Which one was your first choice?
12:31Admiralty.
12:32Admiralty?
12:33Mm-hmm.
12:34OK.
12:35We would like Gothic and Admiralty.
12:39We would like that, too.
12:41Right, OK.
12:42If you give me Gothic and Aviator, we can shake hands and walk away.
12:47Deal done.
12:48Yeah?
12:49No.
12:50If we both agree our number one choice, we flick a coin for the second.
12:55So if we both agree which one we definitely want,
12:58and we flick a coin for the last one,
13:00at least then we've both got a product that we want to sell.
13:02Make the decision you're the project manager.
13:05We'll run it your way.
13:07OK.
13:08I'll get Goth.
13:09You get Admiralty.
13:10We'll flip for the last two.
13:11Yeah?
13:12Who's...
13:13Who's calling?
13:14I'll call.
13:15Let's flip it.
13:16Heads.
13:17Heads?
13:18Yes.
13:19OK.
13:20We will have...
13:21Aviator.
13:22Yeah?
13:23OK.
13:24Cheers, done.
13:25Ruth walks off with Gothic and Aviator.
13:26If I've got his eye contact, I'm stronger than him.
13:27I won't.
13:28Yes.
13:29To be honest, I still stand by Gothic and Aviator that's going to walk out this floor.
13:30Yeah, but they weren't willing to give up on it.
13:31I know, but you've got Admiral and modern oriental.
13:32It's just going to go.
13:33You just don't go.
13:34But...
13:35Seriously, they just don't go.
13:36Yeah, with...
13:37Refract, because it's just...
13:38I'm going to interrupt.
13:39Sharon.
13:40I'm listening to your bit.
13:41Listen, can you have a word with that?
13:42She's running around with her face on.
13:43That's very negative.
13:44And walking around like that in front of the other team is not good.
13:59Sharon.
14:00I'm not really impressed, to be honest, because we've got Admiralty and we've got
14:07Modern Oriental and they're both really different ends of a spectrum, so they don't actually
14:13complement each other well, because they're two key looks.
14:16At the moment, we're kind of stuck, so it'll be a case of just getting organised.
14:20So, a lot of creative thinking.
14:23Well, let's prioritise.
14:24We've got the leaflets.
14:26We've got the goody bags.
14:27Confident it got the best lines, the other teams put Samuel in charge of marketing.
14:32If the customer spends over a certain amount, we give them a free massage.
14:36We need to determine that.
14:37Don't forget, I go shopping all the time.
14:39If you want a massage while you're out, you don't want an Indian massage when they're
14:43going to rip stuff in your hair and all that sort of thing.
14:45Have you got any new ideas?
14:46No.
14:47Well, not what I can think of at the moment.
14:49I need to think about it.
14:51But, obviously, I was...
14:53Sorry, I don't...
14:54What were you suggesting?
14:55I'm asking if you've got any other ideas.
14:57And I'm saying no, not at the moment.
14:59While her team struggle with marketing, Michelle's promoted herself to the VIP area.
15:04Or maybe that colour.
15:06I don't like...
15:07This is where selected customers get personal advice on clothes to encourage them to spend
15:12even more.
15:13Should I try it on, do you think?
15:14I would give it a go.
15:15She's decided to make this her responsibility.
15:18But first, she's going to try out the merchandise.
15:21If I'm going to be totally honest, I feel a little bit like a circus ringmaster.
15:26What do you think?
15:28I don't.
15:29Can I have some champagne while I'm trying it on?
15:32Yes.
15:37Let me just look at how short it is when I bend over as well.
15:40That's alright, isn't it?
15:41Yeah, because you've got the leggings on.
15:42No one will be able to see your bum.
15:44Okay, so whilst I'm getting used to this, let's just see what else we've got.
15:47Erm, where's her other stuff?
15:49If it's a leaflet, a promotional leaflet of some sort...
15:53Can we just confirm...
15:54Can I just finish what I'm saying?
15:55For one second, alright?
15:56So it's 20 pounds.
15:57If it's over 20 pounds...
15:58No need to get aggressive.
15:59No, I'm not.
16:00I want to confirm whether we're going to get...
16:01I'm just trying to finish one statement.
16:03Samuel, I want to see if we actually get any ideas, otherwise we're going to be going
16:06round.
16:07She's going to come in and blow it all out.
16:08These are specific ideas.
16:09We can't just say a leaflet to her.
16:10Obviously, I said that point ten minutes ago.
16:12I think we have to be specific about what we're saying.
16:14We need Michelle in it.
16:16Come and be a VIP.
16:19I'll come and be a VIP person again.
16:21It's going well.
16:22I think I've just got my outfit sorted.
16:24The look that I'm favouring today is a nice, sleek, sharp brown, black t-shirt on the top
16:30with a kind of washed-out, faded denim, short-ish skirt.
16:34People are going to see me in the style and think, crikey, she's got style.
16:38It's obvious there's problems in the team.
16:39I think it's about time we confronted them, to be honest.
16:40What's wrong, Sharon?
16:41I think I've made my views quite clear that what I'm upset about.
16:42I don't know what you're upset about.
16:43Tell me.
16:44Tell me.
16:45You don't take my views into account and you dismiss quite a lot of things.
16:47I disagree.
16:48To be totally honest, you've got a lot of experience in fashion and design.
16:49And I'm happy to listen to you.
16:50I don't know what you're upset about.
16:51Tell me.
16:52You don't take my views into account and you dismiss quite a lot of things.
16:56I disagree.
16:57To be totally honest, you've got a lot of experience in fashion and design and I'm happy to listen
17:03to you.
17:04At the end of the day, we made team decisions on whatever we made.
17:05It was all team decisions.
17:06You're three going to your little gang and it's almost like you're going to be a
17:10big part of the team.
17:11You're going to be a big part of the team.
17:12You're going to be a big part of the team.
17:13You're going to be a big part of the team.
17:14You're going to be a big part of the team.
17:15I think it's about time we confronted them, to be honest.
17:16What's wrong, Sharon?
17:17I think I've made my views quite clear that what I'm upset about.
17:19I don't know what you're upset about.
17:20I don't know what you're upset about.
17:21Tell me.
17:22It was all team decisions.
17:23You're three going to your little gang and it's almost like you're playing like kiddies
17:27thing and you gang up.
17:28Kiddies?
17:29You're backing him and he's backing you.
17:30No, not at all.
17:31And you and Don have got a problem and he's haven't got a problem.
17:34And to be honest, if that's...
17:36I don't know what you're being paranoid.
17:37I'm not being paranoid.
17:38It's obvious that you've got the problem now.
17:39You've got a problem with us.
17:40I'm not the only one that's got a problem because you and Paul are having a go at me.
17:43Don as a project manager is sitting there quiet like he always does.
17:46Why?
17:47I do not need to listen to three boys ganging up on me because you just can't work as a team.
17:50We were supposed to work as a team in this one.
17:52How do you think that way he's ganging up?
17:53Paul's not ganging up with no man.
17:54I'm not getting tired of this fucking whole team brush.
17:57What?
17:58You just tell me one thing that I've done.
17:59Sharon, do you know what?
18:00No, shut up.
18:01I'm freaking...
18:02No, I'm not backing up.
18:03Do you know why?
18:04Do you know what?
18:05Everybody's stabbing every fucker in this house.
18:06Exactly, yeah.
18:07So what's the fucking problem?
18:08The problem is there is actually...
18:11No, I can see people licking each other's asses.
18:13What have I actually said to you?
18:15What are the...
18:16Fuck...
18:17If any fucker wants to go head to head, I'll go head to head with them, okay?
18:19Do you know why?
18:20Because I've got shit on everybody.
18:21Well, Fiona, you wanted to edit it.
18:22Because I've got shit on everybody.
18:23I've got shit on everybody.
18:24I'm...
18:25Fuck.
18:26I'm...
18:27I'm...
18:28I'm...
18:29I'm...
18:30I...
18:31I.
18:32I.
18:34I...
18:35I'm...
18:36I can't even know what I'm saying.
18:37I can't even see.
18:39I can't even see.
18:40You don't know where you're supposed to have cause.
18:42I mean, I don't know where you're supposed to be listening.
18:43I don't know where I'm going to be.
18:45I'm not the you know, I'm not the you know.
18:46I didn't see.
18:47I'm not the you know, I'm the no-no, I'm the only one.
18:507am. Today, the teams will be on the go for 14 hours.
19:04So, what else I did as well, if I just give you one of these.
19:07Project manager Michelle has allocated roles for her team on the shop floor,
19:11while she runs the VIP area.
19:15I think you've got to empower a team.
19:16You can't be there, you can't be always looking over everything.
19:19I do see Ansel and Rufus floor assistants.
19:21I see Salmon as the marketing, visual kind of guy,
19:25and I don't know why, because I've never worked with him,
19:27but it's kind of a gut instinct.
19:34Just before 8, the teams get a first look at the floor area where they'll be selling.
19:39This looks good together.
19:41They must share it, half each.
19:43In volume retailing, presentation is everything.
19:53And Doon is struggling.
19:55Right, Don, what do you want to be your two key sellers to do?
19:58What would sell?
19:59No, you pick whatever you want, I'll dress, so...
20:01We've got basically one of each trend.
20:03So what one do you want me to do for the busts?
20:06I don't know what I'll sell, whatever you think is going to be the most popular,
20:10so can I ask you to do it?
20:12I prefer for me to make a decision to be honest.
20:15So, but what do you think?
20:16This is the point, I don't know.
20:17I'm asking you for your advice.
20:20Well, anything that we've got, to be honest,
20:22because we've picked it all, we've got to sell it all,
20:24so whatever you want.
20:25I don't know what I'm...
20:31You know, in this area, Sharon, you're the one that knows more than we do.
20:35And I'm just not...
20:37You know, I want to ask you to make a decision,
20:39but you're not comfortable making a decision.
20:42Sharon is kind of self-confessed fashion expert in the team.
20:47I just find it quite suspicious that she's not now willing to make any decisions
20:50as to what we put on wear.
20:51I don't know if I want a better word, I think she might be sulking.
20:58Aware Nick and Margaret are watching,
21:01Sharon changes tack and takes charge of Dunn's display.
21:07How high?
21:08Come down two notches, put that one up.
21:11What, so it's not... It's OK there?
21:13Yeah, it's OK there, but put that up.
21:16Sharon, can I just pull the signs and all that stuff in, yeah?
21:19Yeah, ten, twelve.
21:20What do you get all those?
21:22Yeah, I'm just going to back in order, don't you?
21:24Does that look tacky, Sharon?
21:27Yeah.
21:31Doors open in ten minutes,
21:33but a store rule is that salespeople must wear what they're selling.
21:37The teams have 12 hours to sell.
21:55They can compete for the same customers
21:57and keep an eye on one another's progress,
22:00but they can't sell items from the other team's lines.
22:03The promotion that we're doing as well at the moment is,
22:06we're literally, we're doing it on this half of the store today.
22:09Uh-huh, not that half.
22:10Yeah, no, so not this half.
22:12This half's much better.
22:14I was going to say, it depends what sort of...
22:15Yeah?
22:15The label's waiting, she wants to try this one.
22:17Is that OK?
22:18Oh, right, I thought we were looking to buy our products.
22:20No, no, no, that's the...
22:20Her friend is buying a product with Michelle.
22:22Oh, right, OK.
22:23Yeah?
22:23No problem.
22:23Do you want to move over to your side, then?
22:25Yeah.
22:25Yeah, OK.
22:26No, no.
22:28We're just going to go past all your customers and just fart.
22:30That's a good stretch.
22:32Free tea, coffee, soft drinks, champagne.
22:36Is that something that you'd be interested in?
22:38Michelle's outside, targeting tourists.
22:41Yeah.
22:42Now all she's got to do is give them the VIP treatment.
22:47So, can I get you a drink or anything?
22:48Um, I can order tea and coffee, but that will take some time to arrive.
22:56What's wrong?
22:57Are you getting work from our air conditioning?
22:59Oh, I'm sorry.
23:01Gosh, let's move you.
23:02Sorry about that.
23:04Hiya, we've got a new concession that's just opened at Topshop.
23:06Would you like a free bottle of water?
23:07Sure.
23:09For Michelle's team, Sam's strategy is to entice Oxford Street shoppers with free mineral water.
23:16Hiya, we've got a new concession that's just opened up in Topshop.
23:18Would you like a free bottle of water?
23:20Go on.
23:21Please come back for visitors.
23:23He's hoping his free offer will lure girls inside to Ruth and Ansel.
23:28Over here, you've got the Gothic fairy town, which is really in this winter.
23:33And it's got some lovely jackets, as you can see here.
23:35Thank you very much for your help.
23:37Despite yesterday's rows, Dunn's team is off to a good start.
23:41Just add colour.
23:42I'd put a red belt going diagonally on that.
23:44They've got clear rolls.
23:46I'm not just a pretty face, am I?
23:50Sharon's running the changing rooms.
23:52Do you know where the jeans are?
23:52I won't put them underneath, because that might be...
23:54While on the shop floor, Paul is using old-fashioned flattery to sell.
23:58You know what the first thing I look about when I go and see women having a drink?
24:01What's that?
24:02What jacket they're wearing.
24:03Oh, really?
24:03Yeah, it's crucial to me.
24:04Don't you think?
24:05Why is that?
24:06It just is.
24:07It's the most important thing on the lady, I think.
24:08That and nice glasses.
24:11Why?
24:12What can I say?
24:12Let's go to the mirror.
24:13Let's have a look.
24:14Autumn's here.
24:15They look gorgeous.
24:16Go for it.
24:17Yeah?
24:18Okay, cool.
24:18And this is what everyone's buying for some reason.
24:21I'm not sure.
24:22That's definitely your colour.
24:23It goes with your skin collection.
24:25Did you say you're a 10?
24:27Okay, here's a 12.
24:31Would you like a complimentary drink from Topshop?
24:34Samuel's free water is disappearing fast.
24:37A new concession that's just opened up.
24:39Along with the customers.
24:40His other marketing idea, a free massage, has hit the spot for Margaret.
24:45But no one else.
24:46I think it's a really lost opportunity, actually, because we really animate the event normally
24:51and we have a real buzz and a lot of people coming over and we're sort of in this corner
24:55here and I don't think anybody's really promoting us.
25:02Failing to turn his water into sales, Sam remains undaunted.
25:07I think it's a good way of attracting attention and kind of, you know, getting our customers,
25:12you know, trying to treat our customers well.
25:14So I think it's, yeah, absolutely it's a good idea.
25:16Did that look like the kind of clothes that you'd be interested in?
25:24In the exclusive VIP room, Michelle sold just one top.
25:30But now hopes she's on to a winner with a trio of fashionable French day trippers.
25:35Pick some garments that we like the look of, bring them back, try them on, and if you like
25:40the look of anything, feel free to buy.
25:42So she tells you that it's a private room, in fact, to change and all that.
25:47What you can do is take a tour of the store and see what you like.
25:49So, out of everything that you've tried on, then, is there anything that you'd like to do?
25:55So, out of everything that you've tried on, then, is there anything that you liked, that you'd quite like to buy today?
26:21So there's nothing from here that you'd like to buy?
26:33Like, um, no, not today, maybe.
26:39OK, well, thank you very much.
26:41You've been doing some damage on the credit card, eh?
26:42Yes, thank you.
26:44No, honestly, it has been an absolute pleasure selling these, because as soon as you put it on,
26:48it sells itself, so I don't have to say anything else.
26:50On the shop floor, the tills are ringing, but only shop staff can take money.
26:56So, to keep the team's sales separate, Dunn's are billed as red and Michelle's as blue.
27:01Early afternoon, Sir Alan's decided to drop in on top shop owner, Philip Green.
27:20This is a retail phenomenon.
27:24This floor takes £50 million.
27:27How much?
27:28£50 million.
27:29Mindy hell.
27:33What's the numbers?
27:35We are ready, yes.
27:37He checks team sales.
27:39OK, bye then.
27:43Right, who's in charge of the blue team?
27:45That's Michelle, who's downstairs downstairs.
27:46Down the stairs.
27:47I'm part of the blue team.
27:48You're part of the blue team?
27:49Right, you've got a minute.
27:51Find me an outfit for £100.
27:52An outfit for £100?
27:54Come on then.
27:54Right, OK.
27:55Outfit for £100, guys.
27:57Michelle?
27:59You could have lost the sale by now.
28:01It's done, it's over.
28:02There you go.
28:04First outfit for £100.
28:05For £100?
28:06Yeah.
28:06Fine, good.
28:08£95.
28:09Oh, she's done it?
28:10She's done it.
28:12He said, get me for £100.
28:14So I picked up that, and a pair of jeans was £94,
28:16and then Samuel said, you've done it.
28:19That's £66 altogether.
28:22Where's that young lady?
28:23Right, come here.
28:25You're going to be unlucky now.
28:27Why?
28:27You see, less haste, more attention.
28:31That was £66.
28:32You cost yourself £34.
28:35There you go.
28:40Have a good day.
28:42I'll give you a bit of help.
28:42What do you know?
28:47That's better.
28:48Michelle's been down in her VIP suite since the doors opened.
28:53Hello, Michelle, it's Ansel.
28:55Hiya.
28:55The red team are 23% up on us.
29:00Really?
29:00Yeah, so we really need you back so that we can have a meeting and discuss it and decide what we're going to do.
29:06Yeah, we're just wrapping up a personal shopping now, so I'll be back on the line in about ten minutes.
29:12Okay, mate, I'll see you in a minute.
29:13See you soon.
29:14Right, cheers, bye.
29:14After almost an hour and a half with the French girls, she's managed to sell one skirt for £30.
29:24Great to meet you.
29:25So what's the actual figures?
29:27Do we know what the figures are?
29:28No, we just said the herd was 25% down.
29:3023% down.
29:31The issue is we've just got to be conscientious.
29:33With whatever we're doing, we need to decide what we're doing, and that is go for the higher-priced items, and we need to close people quickly.
29:40So you can wear it to the office, wear it at home, shopping trips with jeans, that'll look well sussed.
29:46You can see there you've got nice tops for the evening wear there as well.
29:51If I was to wear these, I wouldn't just wear this here, I'd wear it again and again and again.
29:54That way, you're £40, if you average it over the times you wear it, it comes to 20, 20 pence, whatever, do you know what I mean?
30:01I'll tell you, that would look really nice as well with some kind of quite skinny jeans, or, you know, jeans and boots, or you could wear that with lots of things.
30:08I think the main thing for Michelle is she needs to be at Oak Hall, she needs to be up front.
30:13She's now starting to work in terms of bringing money in, and when you've got four people in the team, you need to be bringing money in, in your different roles.
30:19What about, in terms of your formal jacket, what about that one?
30:22I think Michelle weren't around centrally in terms of being here when we needed to make certain decisions, so we ran a bit ragged.
30:30In fact, I think Ruth and I have made more decisions on today so far, so I think that's the thing.
30:35It's better this afternoon, this morning was not as good as it should have been probably.
30:395.30. The rush hour home has started. It's late night shopping.
30:47If sales are going to take off, this is when it'll happen.
30:51But Oxford Street is a competitive place. The teams will have to work hard to keep their customers.
30:57We've got a new range. I can just show you the range all quickly.
31:00So it's, uh, this is really good. The only thing I'd make you aware of is we're not here tomorrow, so if you like the clothes, we need to.
31:08We'll have to buy them now.
31:09Yeah.
31:10Can I just make a suggestion? And then go quick. This is very popular today, so, and it's, yeah, you tried it on, you know you like it.
31:17So go into one of our bags, okay? Thank you. There you go. Okay, thanks.
31:20So that with jeans alone, put the scarf on, straight away you match it. Yeah. It's really good.
31:25It's really good. Yeah.
31:29This is the must of the season. You can mix and match this. It's the biggest look this winter.
31:33Every purchase you get a free Topshop bag.
31:37And this is the start of your new look.
31:39Michelle's team sales push pays off. The figures are up on duns.
31:44Oh yeah, we're now 5% behind.
31:465% behind?
31:46Yeah, apparently, yeah.
31:48How about that?
31:49I don't know, to be honest.
31:50Let's see if we can find you a decent-sized sweater.
31:52Dun's team responds.
31:54Not helped by Saeed chasing Paul's customers.
31:57See, I think that's gorgeous.
31:59Man, that looks really nice, but you need to try on the black skinny jeans to go with the whole outfit.
32:03Let's have a look. Hold on, hold on, let's have a quick look.
32:05All right, let's just do the mirror.
32:08I can't remember the last sale that I was doing that Saeed hasn't butted in on.
32:11The overall, there you go.
32:13And it's really starting to piss me off now.
32:15Wow.
32:15Well, let me try them on and see how it looks.
32:18Both together and then make a mind up there. How's that?
32:20Cool.
32:21Excellent.
32:21It just seems that whenever there's a girl about Saeed just barges in with his fucking skinny jeans and it's just really starting to piss me off.
32:28I'll call me some time to get this out of the show.
32:30I know, but I've got this. I'll make some time to get this out of the show.
32:32Yeah, I'm sitting in the whole set.
32:33Give me a session.
32:34Madam, we're ready.
32:36Dun's team orders are for the boys to pass girls for the changing rooms to Sharon.
32:41That is out of your way.
32:43That's an arrogant bag.
32:50That's an arrogant bag.
32:51Are they arguing again, Mike?
32:53Well, Saeed's just got a lead.
32:54I mean, Saeed's fault.
32:55You've got a lead.
32:56You put it into a dressing room and you wouldn't hand it over.
32:58Because you need long, slender legs and obviously you've got long, slender legs.
33:03And I'd put on boots.
33:05I'd put on real hardcore boots.
33:08And that's the look.
33:09That is definitely the way forward.
33:11Because I think, again, it shows off your figure and everything.
33:17She's got it for a long time.
33:18Help me.
33:18I certainly can, yes.
33:20Yes, absolutely.
33:23There we go.
33:24How's that?
33:25Yeah?
33:30Here we go.
33:31And I'll just let me know when you're ready.
33:33OK.
33:4412 hours of standing in fashion shoes has taken its toll.
33:49But there's just under two hours to go.
33:52And nothing to choose between the teams.
33:55If you want to go back on the shop floor, I'll stand here and see if I can get some people in for the last hour.
33:58Yeah, I'll tell you.
33:59I don't want that.
34:00Give it a go.
34:01OK.
34:02Excuse me, ladies.
34:03Can I show you our new rangers out today?
34:05We're late for a meal.
34:06I'll take you to dinner afterwards.
34:07We can all wear our jackets, all cuddle up.
34:09I'd love to.
34:10It's my leaving dinner.
34:11They're not there.
34:12I'm so sad you're leaving as well.
34:14I'm not leaving London.
34:16No, please don't.
34:17Are you leaving your job?
34:18Yeah, but I'm selling a new one in second.
34:21Oh, that's amazing.
34:22Yeah.
34:22I just hope everything goes well for you.
34:24Are you going to be warm enough in your new job?
34:26I hope so.
34:27I do as well.
34:28Do you see I want a little jacket?
34:28I don't even know if you don't have a jacket.
34:30Just have a little quick look.
34:31Come on.
34:33What do you think of that?
34:35A bit more military, a bit more style.
34:37Covers your bum.
34:39That's quite nice.
34:40What's wrong with that bum?
34:41Now, if it was up to me, I would keep them uncovered.
34:43But I'm just thinking of your hygiene.
34:45Yes, they're the skinny jeans, the famous skinny jeans.
34:48With your jeans, actually, if you think now you'd be going out to a bar, it's fantastic.
34:52You buy it, we'll get married.
34:54Really?
34:54Come on.
34:55You're lovely.
34:56It is so lovely.
34:57Mr. Tulip.
34:58Mr. Tulip.
34:59I mean, imagine the beautiful, blooming relationship we can have with that name.
35:03What to do, hey?
35:04Go for it.
35:05What's the worst that can happen?
35:08It can divorce me.
35:09Well, you'd be young, free and single and come back and buy some more clothes, then.
35:12You buy it, we'll get married, honestly.
35:14And here we have the skinny jeans.
35:17Nice for a pair of jeans if you're going out in the evening.
35:19Nice for a pair of trousers if you look to your lovely trousers.
35:22Excuse me, can I show you our new range of coats that are out today in our new range?
35:25Oh, what have you bought?
35:26Yeah, the brown one.
35:28Brown jacket.
35:29Oh, sweet.
35:30Do you want to have a look at your new jacket?
35:31Nothing against yours, I'm sure it's lovely and nice and warm.
35:33But I've got a much better one in there that I can sell to you right now.
35:36We've got this brand new range that we've launched today.
35:37It's not maternity, but in nine months' time, play cards are out.
35:40It could be.
35:40I mean, if you wanted to try them on, what size are you?
35:42Does he feel the leather?
35:43Not the best.
35:46Oi, I love those cards.
35:48We're over.
35:49Oh, it's all the most.
35:50We're having this new launch, you see.
35:52I thought you'd be in the pop shop today.
35:53Well, you bet you didn't see these jackets.
35:55I think this lady's got a purchase in her.
35:57I don't know.
36:03Shall I pour some water on my feet?
36:11Look up my blisters.
36:12Look at my blisters.
36:15Can you imagine getting into bed tonight?
36:18Do you know what I want to do now?
36:19Put them in the swimming pool.
36:20Oh, yeah.
36:21Do you remember what we're looking at?
36:22Let's just call it a day.
36:25I'm going to sleep with my jeans on.
36:27You have to, you can't get a month.
36:42Eight candidates remain.
36:44They've given up highly paid jobs for a chance to work for Sir Alan.
36:49Now, one of them is about to get fired.
36:52One of them is about to get fired.
37:22You can go through to the boardroom now.
37:52So, Dun, how'd you like being a team leader?
38:12I've got newfound respect for the project management role.
38:15It's hard work.
38:15Good team leader?
38:18Don't all rush.
38:23I'll move on rapidly then, shall I?
38:26Michelle, how'd you find it?
38:28Yeah, really enjoyed it.
38:29It was good.
38:30Good team leader?
38:32I thought so.
38:32Very well prepared.
38:34Okay.
38:36Right.
38:37Down to the money side of things.
38:39Over to you, Nick.
38:40Will you let me know how Velocity did?
38:42Velocity sales totaled £2,548.
38:48Margaret?
38:49And Invicta sold £2,668.
38:55Well, well done.
38:57Your team won.
38:58Quite a few compliments, actually, from the Topshop people.
39:02About Sharon, they reckon they would employ you.
39:05So, if I fire you next week, you know where to go for your next job.
39:08I've got a very nice treat for you.
39:10You're going off to a famous country hotel for the night.
39:14So, you have a good time.
39:16We'll see you in the boardroom next time round.
39:18You lot, off you go outside.
39:21One of you will be fired.
39:23I'll call you back in.
39:24Three times in a fucking row, I've lost you.
39:50I'm more disappointed in the way that the team's reacted
39:56than I am that we've lost.
39:59I was very surprised at Ansel and Sam's responses in the boardroom
40:02when Sarah and I asked if I was a good project manager
40:04because all the way along the task, I've constantly been saying,
40:07are you happy?
40:08Could I be doing anything better?
40:10And each time, the response has been, you're doing a great job.
40:12But now, it seems that the guy's strategy is very quickly
40:15to turn on me as the PM.
40:17I mean, I think Ruth is pretty disruptive.
40:20She's a big personality.
40:22I don't think she listens,
40:23and she's very disruptive in discussions
40:26and has probably confused Michelle.
40:28Without a doubt, I'm going into the boardroom.
40:30There's no two ways about it.
40:31Michelle will not put Ruth, who's a good friend of hers,
40:33into the boardroom.
40:34So, it'll be Samuel and I and Michelle going into the boardroom.
40:37That's facts.
40:38It's just amazing.
40:56Shit.
40:57Yay!
41:01Follow-up, follow-up.
41:02I blew my load pretty early, so...
41:07Sorry!
41:10Hey!
41:12You all right?
41:13How is that?
41:14The mask I can see.
41:15Please come through.
41:19Just leave your key in.
41:21All right, guys.
41:22A quick toast.
41:23I just want to say three wins.
41:26Exceptional from everyone.
41:28Especially Sharon, I think you're working.
41:32It's difficult for you working with three guys.
41:35You look absolutely gorgeous,
41:36and let's keep on winning.
41:38Cheers, guys.
41:39Cheers, everybody.
41:39Cheers.
41:40Cheers.
41:40Cheers.
41:49Cheers.
41:50Cheers.
41:50Cheers.
41:50Cheers.
41:51Cheers.
41:51Cheers.
41:51Cheers.
41:53Cheers.
41:53Cheers.
41:54Cheers.
41:54Cheers.
41:54Cheers.
41:55Cheers.
41:55Cheers.
41:55Cheers.
41:55Cheers.
41:55Cheers.
41:58Hello?
42:14Hi Jenny, would you send them in please?
42:16So then.
42:18You can go through to the wardroom now.
42:28You looked a bit shocked to me, Michelle, that you lost.
42:38There was a look of complacency about you, that you thought you might have won this thing.
42:43No, no, I don't think we would have won by miles.
42:46I personally think we're just unlucky.
42:48You know, I think everyone sold hard.
42:50I think definitely towards the end we had a great process in place of getting people in to the floor, to the fitting room, to the cash desk.
42:56From what I can understand, you dished out kind of a written kind of job profile for these people, did you not?
43:06What we did as a team is set up a role structure, which I was very confident in would work.
43:10It's all very well, you know, saying, well, all right, okay, you'll do this and you'll do that and you'll do this.
43:16But I think a team leader should constantly be making sure that they are doing what you want them to do.
43:21And if not, just throughout the course of the day, modifying or prompting them to do what you want them to do.
43:27And I did do that.
43:28I didn't just write something and then go off and not bother again.
43:30It was off downstairs quite a bit, wasn't it?
43:32I certainly was.
43:33I was out before my role.
43:34I mean, don't you think you should be in it with your troops?
43:36I don't need to micromanage my team.
43:38I don't need to stand next to them and watch what they're all doing.
43:39Oh, really?
43:40I think those French people, you spent an hour and 20 minutes with them.
43:43I did.
43:44Yeah, and you sold them a 30 quid skirt.
43:46Yeah.
43:46Did that ring a bell with you?
43:48What am I doing wasting my time down here?
43:50I should be upstairs.
43:51Not at all.
43:52I've got trust in Ruth and Ansel.
43:54The battlefield was the sales floor.
43:56Yeah.
43:56Where you could see everything going on and yet you were miles behind the lines downstairs in a VIP room.
44:01Yeah, for the morning I was and we quickly recognised that that probably wasn't going to work.
44:05You didn't quickly recognise.
44:07I think that Ansel came and told you at 2.30 there was a bit of a roll call on the money and you were 23% behind, right?
44:13Yeah, at which point then?
44:14At that point, I would have said enough's enough, you know?
44:17I'm coming up to the battlefield.
44:18I'm going to reorganise the troops.
44:20Now, what do you mean no?
44:21I didn't need to be on the sales floor.
44:23These two were doing a great job.
44:24I think you did need to be on the sales floor.
44:26I think that's where your big error is, quite frankly.
44:28If I was given this task, I would want to be right in the middle of the action and see what's going on.
44:33I could always run backwards and forwards to the dressing room.
44:35Why don't you put Ruth in the dressing room?
44:37Because you put your best people where they're going to work best.
44:40These two are good salespeople.
44:42Why would I show the best salesperson I've got in a fitting room?
44:45In all fairness to Michelle, she was making the best of the opportunity in there.
44:49Listen, right, there is only one job going here, right?
44:52One job only.
44:54I'm not happy with all this camaraderie stuff.
44:57So you'd better start thinking about yourselves.
44:59Do you understand what I'm saying?
45:00All this complementary stuff between each other is going to get you nowhere.
45:04Because I'll tell you what, if any of you survive here, I'll promise you this.
45:07As sure as I've got a hole in my bloody arse, right?
45:10When it gets down to two of you, all these people that are saying nice things about you at the moment will not.
45:16So start thinking about yourself.
45:18Ruth, she's telling me that you're one of the strongest salespeople on the floor.
45:22In comes the most important man of the day, Mr. Green.
45:26And for some reason, rather, decided he was going to help you out.
45:30And then when he helps you out, he says, give me £100 of a clobber.
45:34And what do you do? Give him £66.
45:35Sir Alan, if you don't think I've gone through that every minute of last night.
45:39Something should have rung bells in your head, then my God, I mustn't mess this up.
45:42Yeah, in all fairness.
45:43And this is the time to be the cheekiest as possible, actually.
45:46I would have brought him over £200 of a stuff himself.
45:49Without a doubt.
45:49I would have said to him, look, well, here's the £100 that you wanted.
45:52But by the way, while you're here, as a man that could obviously afford to, I could recommend this and recommend that.
45:57You were dead slow there.
45:59Dead slow there.
46:00You could have won this task, maybe.
46:01I reckon if you'd have talked good enough, you could have got £300 out of him.
46:06Who was getting people in?
46:07Samuel?
46:08Yeah.
46:09I don't think so.
46:10I happen to observe him not doing much at all, quite frankly.
46:14What was your brief?
46:16Basically, what I wanted to do initially was just see how we could get customers in and get them to the salespeople.
46:22I noticed that customers...
46:23What was this then?
46:25What was this all about?
46:27That was something that it was advertising, using to advertise the complementary therapy and that sort of stuff.
46:32But you couldn't take this outside the shop and give it to people?
46:34No, I could have.
46:35And I think...
46:36You didn't?
46:36No, I didn't.
46:38Yeah, no, I think, you know, I didn't recognise that.
46:42Hold my hands up to that.
46:43That was an error on my part, absolutely.
46:47But we...
46:47Didn't she tell one of you that she didn't know what she's doing hanging around?
46:51She wasn't too busy.
46:52She had time to give both Nick and me a hand massage.
46:55OK, can I...
46:56Can I...
46:57I agree that that was an error on my part, absolutely.
47:00But we chose the strategy...
47:02This is an error on your part?
47:03Well, anything else?
47:05That's the one that I'm holding my hands up to, definitely.
47:08So were you satisfied with his marketing?
47:10Well, I'm completely confused because...
47:12Who are you confused with then?
47:13I didn't even know about those leaflets.
47:14Did you ask whether you...
47:15You didn't know about those leaflets?
47:16Was that because you were downstairs and didn't see them?
47:18No, not at all.
47:19I saw one on the cash desk.
47:20I didn't know that we could have them printed and hand out.
47:22Of course we would have got them without a doubt.
47:24So he didn't tell you about them, did you say?
47:26No, I didn't know.
47:27I did not know.
47:28Well, we didn't...
47:29Having delegated marketing to him,
47:32and coming back to the point that I made to you earlier on,
47:35why weren't you, just throughout the course of the day,
47:37checking up on what he was doing?
47:40It seemed to me...
47:41I'm absolutely right in my observation.
47:43You tell them to do marketing,
47:45and you let them to get on with it.
47:46Now you're finding out what you could have done,
47:48what you couldn't have done, and wrong time.
47:50Okay, sir, Alan, can I raise an issue then,
47:51in that kind of project,
47:52and it was to do with the clothing choice.
47:54As when we did the market research,
47:56myself and Michelle co-led the market research,
47:58so I asked the questions,
47:59if you're going to buy one item,
48:01what's the item you're going to buy next week?
48:02They all came back with coat, military style.
48:04So when we came to the clothing choice,
48:06and we looked at all the clothing,
48:07Admiralty was a clear match for that need.
48:11And for some unknown reason,
48:13Gothic became the number one priority.
48:15I don't agree with that.
48:16That's exactly what happened.
48:17We have to vote.
48:18What you actually said was...
48:19Delicate design.
48:20So I was happy to accept Admiralty and Gothic.
48:24Project leader, Michelle,
48:26what about this debate?
48:27You've been very quiet on this particular debate.
48:29When we went down into Topshop,
48:31the main sales area,
48:32which they told us was the main sales area,
48:35the vast majority was dedicated to Gothic.
48:37The entire right-hand block was Gothic.
48:40Yeah, but the point is
48:41that the shop was flooded with Gothic.
48:43Mm-hmm.
48:44The customers could buy that already.
48:46The hot one was Admiralty.
48:49Okay.
48:49Listen, Michelle,
48:50you know what you've got to do now.
48:52You've got to decide upon two people
48:54you bring back in here
48:55who you justifiably think
48:57didn't perform in this task, okay?
49:00All personality issues,
49:02friendships,
49:03lovey-dovey stuff
49:04should go to one side, okay?
49:06Who are you bringing back
49:07in the boardroom with you?
49:08And based on some of the feedback
49:09that you've given me,
49:10I'm going to bring Sam
49:11because of the marketing
49:11and Ruth because of what he said
49:13about not giving the £100.
49:17Right, okay.
49:18And so off you go back to the house.
49:21You have a three
49:22and remain outside.
49:32That was the right decision.
49:33That was the right decision.
49:36It was the right decision, don't worry.
49:38Good luck, mate.
49:41That was the right decision.
49:45Take it easy.
49:49Good luck, guys.
49:50She's picked Ruth
49:55because of what you said.
49:57Exactly.
49:57Apart from that one thing,
49:59Ruth was fantastic on the day.
50:04I mean, I think she made
50:05some bad mistakes.
50:06She's got no business
50:07absenting herself
50:09from all the key decisions.
50:13Okay, well,
50:14we'll bring them back in.
50:18Hello?
50:18Would you send them in, please?
50:21Thank you, Sam.
50:22See you later.
50:23Thanks.
50:23Michelle, what is Ruth doing in here?
50:41It's very difficult to pick an error on this task
50:43because everybody's performed really, really well.
50:45We picked up the error about Phil Green.
50:47There was a missed opportunity.
50:49Have you made an assumption
50:50bringing people in this room
50:51on the basis of what you think
50:52you've gleaned from me saying here?
50:54Not at all.
50:55You see, I don't know if you're trying
50:56to make me happy
50:57because you heard what I was saying here.
50:58No, this isn't.
50:58And I've laboured on this point
51:00about Philip Green
51:01and then you think
51:02she should come in here
51:03and get done for that.
51:04I think that's the wrong thing to do.
51:06So why would I have brought Ansel in?
51:09Neither of them
51:09did anything wrong
51:10in terms of selling.
51:11Neither of them.
51:12So you think
51:13you're going to make me happy
51:14by bringing her in here?
51:14No.
51:15Because I pointed out something wrong.
51:17If I could choose,
51:17I would have brought
51:18one person in this boardroom
51:19full stop.
51:19Who's that?
51:20I have to.
51:20Samuel.
51:21And why is that?
51:22Because I do think
51:23that we missed opportunities
51:24in the marketing.
51:25I was not aware
51:26that we could have taken more.
51:28Why weren't you aware?
51:29I mean, you're the team leader.
51:30That's my whole point about you
51:32is that, you know,
51:33I just get this feeling
51:34you sat down with your computer,
51:36wrote out, you know,
51:37three menus for these people
51:39and said,
51:39go on, off you go.
51:40That's not true, right?
51:41It is true.
51:42It's absolutely true.
51:44What I asked all of them to do
51:45was to think about
51:46what the roles could be,
51:47what they could entail,
51:48try and expand it a little bit
51:49to get everyone happy
51:50with what they were doing.
51:51Michelle ultimately made the decision
51:52as to who she believed
51:54would be the salespeople
51:55and allocated me to marketing.
51:58So I took the marketing role
51:59and I accept the leaflet issue.
52:01Absolutely.
52:02Okay, I accept responsibility.
52:03So do you accept
52:04that you were the one
52:05who was the most delinquent
52:06on this team then?
52:07No.
52:08Why not?
52:08Because I think the critical issue,
52:10as I've said before,
52:11was the selection of clothing.
52:12So if you're not,
52:13if you don't think
52:14you're the weakest link,
52:15who is?
52:16I think it was Michelle.
52:17Can I actually comment on that?
52:18And I'm going to say
52:18something here, Samuel.
52:20You come across,
52:20sometimes you're very aggressive
52:21and you get your points across.
52:22You certainly do in the boardroom.
52:24But you had the opportunity
52:25in that team to sway it.
52:26Now, if I disagree
52:27with something strongly,
52:29I will say
52:29we are making a mistake
52:30and I'll make people hear me.
52:32To be honest,
52:32we spent a lot of time
52:33bickering between myself and Ruth.
52:35Ruth is a very strong,
52:36obviously, vocal personality.
52:38And I disagreed with her
52:39in that meeting.
52:41Okay?
52:41And we did,
52:42can I just finish first of all?
52:44We did disagree in that meeting
52:45and you were being very,
52:46I made a note of it
52:47because you were being
52:48very negative in that meeting.
52:49So every suggestion
52:50that I was coming up with,
52:51you were being,
52:52you were saying,
52:52no, no,
52:53we can't do that.
52:54We have to check this.
52:54Can I tell you something
52:55for one though, Sam?
52:56Can I just,
52:56can I just say one thing?
52:57It's all about decision making
52:57and you don't actually make anything.
52:59Tell me, Ruth,
53:00who should go then?
53:01I've got to say,
53:01if you'd have been stronger,
53:02Samuel,
53:03I'd have listened to you
53:03in the meeting,
53:04Samuel.
53:05Do you think it was a fault,
53:07a flaw,
53:08that Michelle spent so much time
53:09downstairs in the first half?
53:11In the morning, yes.
53:12And I would agree with that.
53:13I think it was.
53:14Yeah, I do.
53:14And it could have been
53:15in the straw
53:15that broke the camel's back.
53:16No, because we're a team
53:17and the one thing Michelle
53:18did do as project manager
53:19was call up everybody.
53:20I think the right decision
53:21was to put me and Ansel
53:22on the floor.
53:23But how many lost sales
53:24were there
53:25because Michelle was down
53:26in the VIP room
53:27for half a day
53:28and sold £130?
53:30I wasn't down
53:30for half a day.
53:31Pretty much.
53:32You're still saying
53:33Samuel should go,
53:34do you?
53:34I mean, this is...
53:35If you want me
53:36to be completely honest,
53:37I'm tall,
53:37and I am,
53:38and I always give
53:39direct answers.
53:40There's flaws on this side
53:41and there's flaws
53:41on Samuel's side.
53:42If Samuel felt
53:43very strong about the products,
53:45he should have swayed
53:46me in that room.
53:47Your comeback was,
53:48Michelle should be sacked
53:48because we got
53:49the wrong product range.
53:50I disagree.
53:50Without question.
53:51Michelle.
53:51Right, what?
53:53I think you've got
53:53a lot to answer for.
53:55You've convinced me
53:56why I shouldn't
53:57get rid of you today.
53:58Because I think
53:58I've delivered...
53:59On this project,
54:00I have delivered.
54:01Your only criticism
54:02of me is the wrong
54:03range,
54:03and I disagree.
54:05The marketing
54:05was diabolical.
54:07Hold on.
54:07You're ultimately
54:08in charge of it.
54:09Yeah.
54:09You never picked up
54:10on it,
54:10and your own admission,
54:11you didn't even know
54:12leaflets were around.
54:13You're digging a hole
54:14for yourself, really.
54:15No, not at all.
54:16I can't...
54:16Yeah, you are.
54:16You are.
54:17You're digging a hole
54:17for yourself.
54:17You have to empower
54:20me to do the...
54:20I'm sorry,
54:21it's just not acceptable.
54:22If I'm out there
54:23doing something,
54:24I want to see
54:25what the troops are doing.
54:26I don't think
54:27you were there
54:27doing enough of that.
54:28In the morning?
54:29You only came up
54:30when the bells
54:30started ringing.
54:32No, I...
54:32Yeah, yeah, you did.
54:33You came up at 2.30
54:34when the bells
54:35started ringing.
54:35When I was sitting
54:35in a room with somebody,
54:36and all they do
54:37after an hour
54:37is spend 30 minutes...
54:38Yeah, well, I hold
54:38you totally responsible,
54:40in fact.
54:41I have this vision
54:42of you dishing out
54:43what your job is
54:44and this, that,
54:44and you get on with it.
54:46Right, back me up with you two.
54:48Did I dictate a role to you?
54:54I hold you responsible
54:55for this.
54:56I don't think
54:57you managed it
54:57very, very well.
55:02But, Samuel,
55:03I've had enough
55:04of your excuses.
55:05You have not convinced
55:06me here at all
55:07in any way or form
55:09that you contributed
55:10to this.
55:10I think you made
55:11a fatal error
55:12in the marketing.
55:13You're fired.
55:15Okay?
55:18Well done, guys.
55:25I have a hard feeling
55:26to don't worry about it.
55:27No problem with that.
55:41Definitely, I've fucked up
55:42on the task
55:43and I should have
55:44made better use
55:45of the masseuse.
55:45I should have been
55:46more proactive
55:47about that.
55:48I wasn't
55:48and I got burned
55:49for it, you know.
55:50So, but, you know,
55:52that was my mistake
55:53and I paid for it.
55:55I think I was vocal enough
55:56and I expect people
55:57around me
55:57to be professional
55:58enough to listen
55:59to a sensible argument
56:00and obviously
56:01that wasn't the case
56:02and it kind of
56:03seemed to be
56:04he or she, in fact,
56:05who shouts loudest
56:06gets heard.
56:07So, maybe I should
56:08do more shouting.
56:09One job,
56:14now just seven
56:15candidates remain.
56:17Sir Alan's search
56:18for his apprentice
56:19continues.
56:26Next week,
56:27the candidates
56:28get a wake-up call.
56:29Where's everyone?
56:30In their bed.
56:31I'm just going to get them.
56:31Right, go get them.
56:33Now.
56:34Sir Alan's at the
56:35Kenzoa.
56:37Right, come on,
56:38hurry up.
56:39The tasks we've got
56:40today,
56:41I would suggest
56:41one of the toughest
56:42tasks I have set
56:44because it's going to
56:45sort the men out
56:46from the boys.
56:47Yes!
56:48Selling to trade,
56:49the skills Sir Alan
56:50built his empire on.
56:51I can do this,
56:53it can be done.
56:54Can the candidates
56:55spot the must-have
56:56product?
56:57Don't be enrude
56:58to the lady,
56:58it's bent metal.
57:00And can they close
57:01deals with hard-nosed
57:02buyers?
57:03This is a new
57:05contemporary,
57:06quite funky,
57:07cosmopolitan,
57:08minimalistic coat
57:09stand.
57:09I'm going to ram
57:10these things down
57:11to people's throats
57:12today.
57:12What an absolute
57:13wanker.
57:14Crack.
57:15We could give you
57:16eight for 200 pounds,
57:17it's not really
57:17stretching your budget.
57:19I felt like he was
57:19a second-hand car salesman.
57:21So if we sell
57:22anything below that,
57:23we're making a loss,
57:24which means I'll get
57:24sacked.
