00:01How porn delays your brain development. I'm Dr. Trish Lee. Let me tell you how. In this video, we are going to cover three things.
00:13Number one, I'm quickly going to tell you how your brain should develop in terms of using electrical energy.
00:21Then number two, I'm going to share with you how porn disrupts the development of your brain in that way and why, how it's impacted.
00:32Then number three is your brain tip for the day. What you can do to begin to develop your brain today.
00:40Today, start bringing it back online so you can get on purpose in your life, in your work, in your relationships, in your hobbies, and get thriving instead of surviving.
00:51Okay, so number one, how is your brain supposed to develop in and of itself if it's developing optimally?
00:59Okay, so you know how I always talk about brain speeds, especially if you are hooked on pornography.
01:06Your brain is likely using a lot of excessive, very fast speed and using too much slow speed simultaneously.
01:15And that's what brings your brain back to the screen for more calming of the fast speed and stimulating of the slow speed.
01:24And I'm always telling you that our goal is to pop up perfect processing speed in the middle so that your brain is processing your world and your life in real time so that you can stay present and enjoy yourself and be happy and get dopamine flowing in the right amounts, get serotonin flowing in the right amounts, and be in your life and be content, have peace, enjoy.
01:51Okay, that was a little bit of an aside, but I promise you it's relevant.
01:54So the way that our brain develops from birth is that when you are born, your brain is supposed to use a lot of that extra slow speed because basically when we're all babies, what do babies do?
02:09They sleep.
02:11So when your brain is using a lot of slow speed, it makes you sleep.
02:16And that is very typical and healthy when you're a baby and then as you're growing up into infancy, into toddlerhood, into childhood, that slow speed is supposed to go down.
02:29When that slow speed goes down, you are more alert, you can learn, you can become focused.
02:36When that slow speed goes down in your frontal lobe, you develop executive function skills, which means you can make big picture goals and set small objectives towards those goals and their attainment.
02:50What it means is you can start developing your own opinions, you can make good judgments, and you can, you know, pump the brakes because your frontal lobe becomes the brakes in decision making so that you don't make bad decisions and you make good ones that keep you moving forward.
03:08So as you grow up, the slow speed is supposed to go down and your frontal lobe especially is supposed to become activated.
03:17Now, what happens when you start consuming pornography as a child or a young adolescent, especially what happens is that slow speed doesn't go down in the front of your brain, in the prefrontal cortex, in the frontal lobe.
03:37We know this from science.
03:39So science proves that the younger you are, that you begin to consume pornography, the more it's going to impact your brain because of this.
03:49It's called hypofrontality.
03:52Hypofrontality means not enough of the perfect speed in the middle in the frontal lobe, not enough activation.
04:01And it happens in two ways.
04:02Number one, there's much too much slow speed because your brain didn't develop and have that slow speed come down.
04:09Then if you go back to the screen a lot, what happens is literally your brain isn't juiced up.
04:16It doesn't have enough power as it would if you weren't continually going back to the screen and frying it out.
04:22And you know, when you go back to the screen, science proves it's also frying out the midbrain, which is the reward center in your brain.
04:29It's becoming desensitized, which can lead to erectile dysfunction and to not being happy in your own life because you need the instant gratification of the easy button of pornography to bathe your brain in dopamine and to pop up that medium speed artificially so you can get through your life.
04:52So, when you leave the habit behind, guess what happens?
04:57That slow speed starts to come down.
05:00That's the unwiring that I'm talking about.
05:03It's called anti-Hebbian learning theory, which means if you don't go back to the screen and you're not flooding your brain with dopamine and you're not artificially bringing these speeds down and artificially popping this one up in the middle,
05:18artificial, artificial, from pornography, supernormal stimulus, if you stop doing that, you will unwire the pattern.
05:28Now, of course, unwiring isn't the end-all and be-all.
05:32That's the beginning.
05:33You stop watching pornography and your brain will start to relax and start to no longer take that neural pathway it's been taking back to porn.
05:42But as many of you know, and you read it in the comments, if you don't start rewiring your brain in the right direction, you will have a very difficult time avoiding slips and relapses.
05:56You can't just unwire your brain.
05:59You have to rewire it in the right direction.
06:02What does rewiring look like?
06:04Starting new routines, starting new habits, breaking old thought processes, figuring out what your emotions are telling you.
06:12Figuring out what to do about them, how to move towards them and solve them instead of escape into porn to avoid them.
06:21You have to resolve and unravel experiences from the past that may have locked your brain neuro-rigidly in this pattern that craves calming and stimulation.
06:33Generally speaking, there's work to be done in a couple avenues to really rewire your brain in the right direction.
06:41When you do that, that's called Hebb's Law.
06:45So you're going to count on anti-Hebbying learning to start unwiring the porn brain pattern.
06:52But you're going to change things in your life to start rewiring your brain in the right direction towards the optimal pattern of no longer artificially generated,
07:03but innately, inherently healed from the inside, popping that perfect processing speed in the middle up and bringing down these speeds in the extreme for the long run.
07:16Teaching your brain to operate in this mode now and no longer need to go back to the screen to feel calmed and stimulated because your brain will have grown up.
07:27You will have developed it and decreased that slow speed that was happening because your brain was stunted in development because you began to consume pornography and have continued to do so over time.
07:42Okay, so number three is how do you actually do that?
07:45Okay, sounds great, Dr. Lee.
07:47Fantastic.
07:48I'm going to unwire, rewire, and hardwire my brain.
07:50The way you're going to do that is you're going to activate your frontal lobe.
07:56You're going to grow it up.
07:57And what that means is you have to use your frontal lobe for impulse control.
08:03So when you feel cravings or urges, you have to be able to deny them and get a pivot plan going and move in the opposite direction.
08:11When you are able to control impulses, you've used your frontal lobe.
08:16You've developed it.
08:17When you use executive function skills, one strategy I tell everybody to do is to learn how to cook because we all have to eat.
08:27So if you learn how to make a few meals, you will be using a lot of executive function skills.
08:34You will have to decide what meal you're going to prepare.
08:38Look for recipes.
08:40You will then have to go purchase the supplies that you need.
08:43Then you will have to spend time chopping veggies.
08:47You know how good that is for your brain.
08:49Being able to prepare that meal.
08:52And at each step, that should be gratifying that you've figured out what recipe.
08:58Small dose of dopamine.
09:00Perfect processing speed being used.
09:02Executive function prefrontal cortex coming on the line.
09:06Then when you go purchase it, you're doing the same thing.
09:09The small wins.
09:09Then when you prep out everything you need to cook it, small win.
09:14You're moving towards these small steps towards a larger goal.
09:18Then when you make this delicious meal, you will get a bigger reward.
09:25And especially if you share it with other people and they tell you what a great job you did and how delicious dinner was,
09:31that is a bigger reward for your brain and it's learning executive function skills.
09:36And you can do that with any project that includes smaller steps towards a bigger goal.
09:42But we all have to eat, so you might as well learn how to cook.
09:44I shared my screen with someone and I have a recipe up that I had tabbed, which I must have done it on my phone.
09:50And I don't know, it ended up in the browser on my computer.
09:53But it was for artichoke chicken.
09:56And the woman's like, that looks really good.
09:58But I do exactly what I'm telling you.
10:01And you've heard me in other videos.
10:02Chopping veggies is a way I bring my brain down just about every day.
10:05And, you know, again, and when it comes to nutrition, you want to eat protein, healthy, complex carbs,
10:12and healthy fats in combination to sustain yourself.
10:16But that's a conversation for a different day.
10:19Cooking, great executive function skills, and resensitizing the reward center in the middle of your brain,
10:26growing it up to where you need it to be while you leave your porn habit behind.
