00:01Authorities in the Vatican and Rome have put massive security measures in place for Pope Francis' funeral on Saturday.
00:10Thousands of police officers will be deployed with reinforcements arriving from several Italian regions,
00:16along with security personnel from about 130 foreign delegations.
00:22According to local officials, the area around the Vatican and along the route of the funeral procession
00:28will be protected by a comprehensive security presence covering threats from the air, land and sea.
00:36In addition to the security arrangements, health measures have been put in place by the Lazio region.
00:42Pope Francis, who had been recovering after being hospitalized for five weeks with double pneumonia, died on Monday at the age of 88.
00:50Pope Francis' funeral will be held on Saturday at 10 a.m. in St. Peter Square and attended by world leaders,
00:59including Argentine President Javier Millet, U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
01:07So far, 130 official presidencies have been confirmed, including ten royals and numerous prime ministers and ambassadors.
01:16According to current norms, the conclave to choose Francis' successor will begin between the 5th and the 10th of May.
01:26U.S. President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump have left Washington for Rome,
01:32where they will join heads of state and royalty for Pope Francis' funeral on Saturday.
01:37Trump repeated his prediction that he'll be meeting with foreign leaders on the sidelines of the funeral, saying that it is going to be, quote, very interesting.
01:51He also said he met the Pope twice and that he, quote, loved the world and was just a good man.
01:59At least three people were killed by Russian drone attacks on Friday in Ukraine's eastern town of Pavlorad.
02:14The strike sparked a fire on an apartment building in the city.
02:19The regional governor said that at least 14 people have been left injured.
02:23According to Ukraine's armed forces, Russia launched 103 attacks over Ukraine from Thursday into Friday, 41 of which were shot down and 40 going off radar.
02:37The regions affected include Kharkiv, Sumy and Cherkasi.
02:40Meanwhile, hours later, U.S. Envoy Stephen Witkoff arrived in Moscow for more talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin about Ukraine's peace plan.
02:53Ukraine has previously made clear that its priorities in negotiating remain the preservation of territory and stopping the Russian aggression.
03:01A high-ranking Russian general has been killed in an apparent car blast near Moscow, says local media.
03:13Lieutenant General Jaroslav Moskalik died after a Volkswagen Golf exploded in a residential area in the city of Balashikha, authorities said.
03:24Investigators have opened a criminal investigation.
03:27The incident comes just days after heavy Russian airstrikes on Kyiv, in which at least 12 people have died.
03:42U.S. President Donald Trump says Russia made a pretty big concession by stopping short of seizing all of Ukraine.
03:49Trump made the comments as he hosted Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Garstori at the Oval Office to discuss trade and the ongoing war in Ukraine.
03:59What concessions has Russia offered up thus far to get to the point where you're closer to peace?
04:06Stopping the war, stopping taking the whole country, pretty big concession.
04:12Ukraine and much of Europe have fiercely pushed back against this notion, arguing that it's hardly a concession for Russia to pause its land grab.
04:22But Trump insists that peace talks are going well and progressing, reiterating his belief that both countries genuinely want peace.
04:29He also added that he has a deadline in mind for ending the war, warning that Washington's attitude could drastically change after then.
04:38I have my own deadline, I have my own deadline, and we want it to be fast, and the Prime Minister is helping us, he wants it to be fast too.
04:47And I think everybody at this time in NATO, they want to see this thing happen.
04:53So we have a deadline, and after that we're going to have a very much different attitude.
04:58Trump says his only objective is to end the bloodshed, noting that 5,000 young soldiers are dying weakly from both sides on the front lines.
05:07Maintaining a positive outlook, the U.S. president said he believes there is a very good chance of ending the war in the near future.
05:13Ukrainians and Crimean Tatars have been fighting against Russian occupation and annexation of Crimea since the very beginning of Russian invasion in 2014.
05:27The chairman of the Crimean Tatar, Medjlis, told Euronews, as he recalls how Ukraine's international partners were asking Crimean citizens not to provoke Russia.
05:36All of our partners, the members of the time, the members of the time, were acting from the position that we must provoke Russia to be in the way.
05:43We must provoke Russia, that they will be in the way, with Ukraine, and the government will be in the way.
05:51The way they will find the form and the path of the way to solve this crisis.
05:57I quote the thing they said to me when I was in the time in Crimea.
06:01I think it's important to remember the true position of their own countries,
06:12who were guarantors of the security of the Ukrainian state in the borders of the Budapest.
06:23Commenting on Donald Trump's claim that Crimea was
06:27handed over to Russia without a shot being fired.
06:32Chubarov says it is both false and disrespectful.
06:36This is a great concern to the Ukrainian soldiers who were killed in the first days of the burial.
06:44During the most recent months, from the period of occupation, in January,
06:52we began to kill our young people.
06:56We then found them some of them, some of them, some of them.
07:01We didn't know where they were.
07:03And to talk about the fact that Crimea was taken without any shooting,
07:13or without any punishment,
07:15it's just to blame the people who were in that situation,
07:22and just to know about the fact that Crimea was taken.
07:31Donald Trump has increased pressure on Kyiv regarding territorial concessions from Ukraine,
07:36which could allegedly include recognizing the annexation of Crimea.
07:39The idea Kyiv and Crimean Tatars have repeatedly rejected.
07:44Indian troops exchanged fire with Pakistani soldiers along the two countries' highly militarized border in Kashmir,
07:56according to Indian officials.
08:00They said Pakistani soldiers fired at an Indian position,
08:04and that Indian troops retaliated.
08:07No casualties were reported.
08:09The gunfight comes amid soaring tensions between the nuclear-armed rivals,
08:14following a deadly attack on tourists in Kashmir, which killed 26 people.
08:20India accused Islamabad of cross-border terrorism,
08:24and Prime Minister Narendra Modi vowed to retaliate.
08:28I say to the whole world, India will identify,
08:38threat and punish every terrorist and their backers.
08:47We will pursue them to the ends of the earth.
08:57Pakistan denied any connection to the attack,
09:01but that hasn't stopped New Delhi from retaliating.
09:05India suspended a water-sharing treaty,
09:08shut down the land-border crossing,
09:10and revoked visas for Pakistani nationals.
09:14Islamabad canceled visas for Indian citizens,
09:17halted trade, and warned that diverting the flow of water
09:21would be considered an act of war.
09:26Frontex's executive director Hans Leighton says he wished no migrants were returned to Libya,
09:32where they often face human rights abuses.
09:34But sometimes, he says he has no choice.
09:38The EU's external border and coast guard agency Frontex is regularly challenged by human rights groups
09:44for not doing enough to save lives at sea.
09:48Its use of aerial surveillance to enable the Libyan Coast Guard to intercept migrant boats
09:52often results in vessels returned to Libya.
09:56We don't want people to be returned to Libya.
09:58That's the only way we can do it,
10:00is to inform this maritime rescue coordination center.
10:03And if it's in Libyan territory,
10:05it's the Libyans who have to take the responsibility.
10:07And they do.
10:08And I've been asked,
10:10okay, but why don't you just skip the Libyans and only inform the NGOs?
10:13But that would mean that I would play with human lives.
10:16Because if the NGOs are not available, then there's no coordination, then people might drown.
10:21And I cannot take that responsibility.
10:23So as long, as much as I do not like people to be returned to Libya,
10:27if I have to choose, again, I'd rather save lives than not save lives.
10:31Meanwhile, NGOs which actively reach out to help migrants from dying in the sea are regularly criticized by member states,
10:40even prosecuted and accused of supporting smuggling.
10:44But Mr. Lightens believes his role is to work alongside NGOs in the protection of lives at sea.
10:51For me, NGOs are part of the ecosystem.
10:55I'm in touch with them.
10:56We speak.
10:57We try to understand each other's positions.
10:59We try to make sure that we don't sort of block each other's,
11:04because we all see the need to save lives at sea, for example.
11:07And also, by the way, NGOs, we cooperate in a way.
11:10For example, what we do is, after return people,
11:13we have a so-called post-return program,
11:15which is meant to help people pick up their lives again.
11:19And for this, we hire, actually, NGOs to perform this on our behalf with European Frontex funding.
11:26So I think it's actually a more nuanced picture than often being told.
11:31You can watch the full interview with Frontex's executive director next Thursday on the Europe Conversation.
11:37and you join us.
