00:00As summer approaches, dog owners in Sunderland are reminded that dog exclusion zones will be in effect from 1 May until 30 September on Roca Beach, and designated stretches of Seaburn Beach.
00:12These seasonal restrictions are part of the City's Public Spaces Protection Order, which aims to address issues like dog fouling and littering.
00:20Introduced in 2019 and renewed in 2024 following extensive public consultation, the PSPO empowers Sunderland City Council to enforce rules that ensure public spaces remain clean and safe for all residents.
00:33The dog exclusion zones are a key component of this initiative.
00:36Michelle Coates, Neighbourhood Enforcement Manager at Sunderland City Council, emphasised the importance of public awareness.
00:43She said,
00:44We know from our Let's Talk resident feedback that the environment is a top priority for our residents, with calls for more enforcement action.
00:52More than 90% of those who took part in the consultation ahead of the new PSPO renewal were in favour of keeping the dog exclusion zones on our beaches as they are.
01:01The City Council Cabinet Member for Environment Transport and Net Zero, Councillor Lindsay Leonard, said,
01:07We are proud of our beautiful beaches and want to keep them clean and tidy so everyone can enjoy them.
01:12We want to take this opportunity to remind residents about the dog exclusion zones which come into force in May.
01:19We have clear signage for these zones at both beaches as well as information on our website.
01:24While most residents are considerate dog owners, there are still some who were in breach of the dog exclusion zones.
01:30This resulted in us issuing 21 fixed penalty notices for dogs in the exclusion zones at Roca and Seaburn in 2024.
01:38Anyone caught breaching the dog exclusion zone faces a fixed penalty fine of £100.
