00:00Good afternoon. My name is Phil Hewitt, Group Arts Editor at Sussex Newspapers. Lovely this
00:06afternoon to speak to Holly Sellers. Now, Holly, it's an exciting time. You are the
00:11exhibition coordinator for West Sussex Art Society, and you're just coming up to the
00:16big one, aren't you? Two weeks, annual exhibition, May 16th to the 31st at the Shoreham Centre.
00:23Why is this exhibition such an important one for the society generally, do you think?
00:27I think it's really good because we've spread out to Shoreham now, and as we represent West
00:33Sussex, before we've shown in Worthing, and now we're spreading out, it's a great venue
00:39to show off our work, great wall space. It's got a great footfall and a great location,
00:45so it's going to be really exciting, especially as we have over 30 artists showing this year.
00:51That's a good number, isn't it? And in terms of their subject matter, it's going to be pretty
00:56open, isn't it? So it's going to be a very varied, genuinely varied exhibition, isn't it?
01:00Oh yeah, we've got abstract, modern, conceptual, wildlife, landscape, floral, it's going to be
01:06a great exhibition with a huge range of artists.
01:09Wow, and when you consider that range, which does sound impressive, what's the thing that
01:13unites everyone then? What do they have in common?
01:17A passion and a love for local art, I suppose. You know, we all meet once a month at the school
01:21in Worthing, and we all just want to share our art with the community and get to know other artists.
01:30Yeah.
01:30We're a really good group.
01:32And it sounds like there's a time when so many clubs and societies are struggling a bit, aren't they?
01:36Probably still post-pandemic. You, as a group, West Sussex Science Society, are doing very well
01:41in terms of membership, aren't you? How do you explain that?
01:44I think it's targeting new audiences. We've got a lot of people coming through from Northbrook
01:52College and their arts group, because some of our members are doing the art course there
01:57and they've invited along some of their other members. We've got, you know, younger people
02:01coming in. And again, social media, so consistent social media presence. We've now got a new
02:07woman taking over our social media. She's doing a great job of just getting the message out
02:12there. And I think that's it, really. You've just got to let people know that we're here
02:16and that you can join. So, you know, and it's just a great chance to be able to exhibit,
02:22see demonstrations, meet other artists.
02:25Brilliant. Well, it sounds like you're doing that superbly. It's the West Sussex Science
02:29Society. Your exhibition, annual exhibition, will be at the Shoreham Centre from May the 16th
02:35to the 31st. Holly, lovely to speak to you and good luck with that exhibition. Thank you.
02:40Thank you so much, Phil.
