During a press briefing on Thursday, Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) was asked why he believes the Democratic Party is polling poorly across the nation.
Transcript
00:00Kevin, can you say as to why you think the Democrats have nationally a lower polling than they've had in decades?
00:06Why is that the case?
00:07Well, there's a disappointment among some progressives that we lost the last election.
00:12But I think they can be brought back into the fold if we aggressively go after this administration
00:17and their violations of the Constitution and offer an alternative.
00:21In a short period of time, in the first 100 days, Donald Trump's approval ratings have been going downhill.
00:27And it just reflects the fact of how radical his ideas are and how unacceptable they are to most families.
00:34So, you know, I think we can build this party.
00:36I think we can build it back into a majority party.
00:39We've got to get started with the off-year election.
00:41What do you think are some of the reasons why that polling has come down for Democrats?
00:45What are some of those specific things that you see were, you know, turning left?
00:49Well, there's a disappointment that we didn't address the issues, the cost of living issues.
00:54But remember this president, remember what he promised about the price of eggs and the price of food people face in the grocery stores?
01:01He doesn't talk about it anymore, does he?
01:03Because exactly the opposite is occurring.
01:05His trade war is going to raise prices on American families at a time when they thought the message of the last election was they had a friend in Donald Trump who would bring down costs for families.
01:14That's not a fact.
01:15It hasn't happened.
01:17And when we make that message clear across the board, I think it will make a difference.
01:21Senator, your thoughts on...
01:23If you go back 29 years, you made that first announcement about your Senate run.
01:27Yeah.
01:27Give yourself...
