00:00A fast-moving wildfire has burned through a large part of New Jersey's
00:10pinelands in the United States on Wednesday, becoming one of the biggest the state has
00:14seen in almost 20 years. As of Wednesday night, the fire has burned 13,250 acres and was 50%
00:23contained.
00:24You guys have to remember, New Jersey has some of the most volatile wildland fuels in
00:28the entire country. Everybody's used to seeing California and things like that, that chaparral
00:32that burns up them hills and goes crazy. Well, these pine barrens out here are the exact same
00:38type of fuel model. They are just like having napalm spread across the ground.
00:43New Jersey Forest Fire Service said the Jones Road wildfire, which started in the Greenwood
00:48Forest Wildlife Management Area near Lacey Township on Tuesday, prompted thousands of people to
00:54evacuate. Although many homes were threatened, evacuation orders were lifted by Wednesday
01:01morning.
01:02So much has happened in the last 36 hours. What I can tell you is, this was one of our
01:08great buildings and one of our great businesses in town. This is Liberty Door and Awning. Unfortunately,
01:15we lost it. There is actually good news here, though. In this whole event, which was the largest
01:20fire in our history in Lacey Township, we have zero loss of life, zero loss of single-family
01:27homes, and as of this morning, zero injuries to report.
01:32Authorities said the fire is expected to keep burning for several more days, with rainfall
01:37expected on Friday or Saturday, and this will likely help put out the fire. They said the
01:42cause of the fire is still under investigation. So far this year, New Jersey has seen an unusually
01:48high number of wildfires, with 662 fires burning more than 16,500 acres, nearly double the number
01:57compared to last year.
