Shocking images as flames engulf New Jersey Pinelands
Graphic images are coming out from the fires in southern New Jersey. Rows of trees in the Pinelands area on fire Tuesday night, April 22, as emergency workers scrambled to prevent further damage.
A sprawling wildfire burning in New Jersey's Pinelands near Atlantic Ocean beach towns could become the largest in the state in about 20 years, having already consumed some 11,500 acres, officials said on Wednesday.
The Jones Road Wildfire had spread to 11,500 acres in less than 24 hours as of 10 a.m. on Wednesday and was 30% contained, the New Jersey Fire Service said in a post on X. It was no longer threatening populated areas.
The blaze could become the largest in New Jersey in about 20 years, said Shawn LaTourette, the state's commissioner of environmental protection.
