00:00Crowds of faithful gathered outside St. Peter's Basilica
00:05as the body of Pope Francis was transferred there from the Vatican Hotel where he lived.
00:11Pallbearers carried this simple wooden coffin on their shoulders onto St. Peter's Square and into the Basilica,
00:18cardinals, bishops and the Swiss Guards processing slowly behind.
00:22Once inside the Basilica, the casket was not put on an elevated bier
00:27but simply on an inclined ramp facing the pews, according to the late Pope's wishes.
00:33Mourners are able to enter the Basilica until Friday to pay their respects,
00:37after which the Pope's casket will be closed and sealed.
00:41The funeral has been set for Saturday morning and will be attended by world leaders
00:45including U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
00:51Cardinals are continuing their meetings this week to plan the conclave to elect Pope Francis' successor.
00:57Hundreds of foreign delegations are expected at the Vatican for Pope Francis' funeral on Saturday as part of Italy's security plan.
01:11Police are currently patrolling the streets around St. Peter's Basilica,
01:17where the Pope has been moved for three days of public mourning.
01:21On Saturday, thousands of Catholics as well as religious and political leaders from around the world are expected to attend his funeral.
01:31Security mechanisms including anti-drone weapons and a no-fly zone patrolled by fighter jets
01:37are currently being used across Rome and in the skies above the Italian capital.
01:43Pope Francis has broken tradition by asking not to be buried at the Vatican,
01:47but in a simple tomb at the Papal Basilica of St. Mary Major, where he frequently prayed.
01:53A day after the death of Pope Francis, French President Emmanuel Macron confirmed he will attend the funeral on Saturday.
02:09But Franco-Vatican relations have been anything but straightforward, marked by moments of warmth,
02:16but also shaped by tensions over issues such as abortion being enshrined in the French Constitution
02:23and the country's evolving debate on assisted dying.
02:27Although often accused of being cold towards France, Pope Francis visited the country three times.
02:33That's more than any other during his 12-year pontificate.
02:37But these visits were marred by misunderstandings.
02:41The first was in Strasbourg in 2014, when the Pope gave a speech at the Council of Europe and the EU Parliament,
02:49but did not make a detour to the city's famous cathedral.
02:53Nine years later, the Pope visited Marseille, declaring,
02:59I'm going to Marseille, not France, a statement that raised many eyebrows.
03:05The pontiff celebrated Mass in a packed stadium and even called for a more compassionate approach to migrants,
03:12a subtle dig at the French government's policies.
03:16The people who are afraid to deny it when they are abandoned on the waves,
03:23must be protected.
03:25It's a duty of humanity.
03:28It's a duty of civilization.
03:31Allegations of tensions resurfaced last December when Pope Francis did not attend
03:36the grand reopening of the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris.
03:40Yet, a week later, he visited Corsica, his final trip abroad.
03:46But experts claim it was less about politics and more about proximity to the faithful.
03:52The Vatican has long defended these travel choices saying they reflect Pope Francis' commitment to the church's peripheries,
04:05places overlooked by previous popes like Mongolia,
04:09and Southeast Asia.
04:23A Pope who broke with tradition not to distance himself from France,
04:27but to reach out to the edges of the Catholic world.
04:31Catholics in the Romanian commune of Raducanen gathered in mourning,
04:39following the death of Pope Francis holding a special Mass in his memory.
04:43Catholics are a minority religion in Romania, making up only about 4% of the population.
04:49Around 150,000 people lined the streets of nearby Iasi when Pope Francis visited Romania six years ago.
04:56And mourners remember him fondly.
04:59The whole world is ready to go to see Pope Francis, Pope Francis, Pope Francis, Pope Francis, Pope Francis.
05:11For us, it was a very interesting experience.
05:15For us, it was a very interesting experience.
05:17It was a very wonderful time.
05:19It was a very refreshing time.
05:21It was even a Christmas, when the aircraft was brought in,
05:25it was even about his death.
05:27And the sun came, and for me, it was really amazing.
05:30This is bountiful.
05:32Following the church service, the community gathered in the cemetery where priests led
05:39prayers.
05:43Church bells from the diocese will ring daily at noon during the official morning period.
05:55At least nine people have been killed and over 40 others injured after a Russian drone
06:00struck a bus carrying commuters in the Ukrainian town of Marhanetsk.
06:05The strike was part of a large-scale wave of Russian strikes across Ukraine overnight
06:09into Wednesday.
06:11Multiple people were injured in Kherson, Odessa and Poltava after civilian infrastructure
06:16was hit, starting fires in residential buildings, according to local officials.
06:22The attack on Kherson also targeted energy infrastructure and completely destroyed one
06:26of the city's energy facilities, according to the region's governor.
06:30Russia has intensified its attacks across Ukraine in recent weeks, even as Kyiv proposed a 30-day
06:36truce on strikes against civilian infrastructure.
06:40Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that Ukraine is ready for any format of negotiations
06:45that might bring a ceasefire and open the door to full peace negotiations.
06:55The European Commission has fined tech giants Apple and Meta for failing to comply with its
07:00digital regulations.
07:02Apple received a €500 million fine for preventing app makers to point consumers to cheaper options
07:08outside of the App Store.
07:10Meta, on the other hand, received a €200 million fine because it forced its users to
07:15choose between seeing ads or paying to avoid them.
07:19European Commissioner Teresa Ribeiro said the law, called the Digital Market Act, is crucial
07:25to ensure a level playing field for digital players.
07:29Ribeiro said that Apple and Meta fall short of complying with the Act and instead have implemented
07:34measures that reinforces consumer dependence on their platforms.
07:38Apple announced it was going to lodge an appeal, claiming the European Commission is unfairly
07:43targeting the platform which they say is bad for the privacy of their users, as well as
07:47pushes them to give away their technology for free.
07:51Meta has been contacted for a comment but has not yet responded with a statement.
08:00Tesla CEO Elon Musk said he will scale back his involvement in US government affairs and devote
08:06more time to the electric vehicle maker after the company reported a steep drop in profits.
08:15Musk told analysts that his time spent on the Trump administration's Department of Government
08:20Deficiency, or DOGE, would drop to a day or two per week.
08:26He added that the major work of establishing DOGE is done.
08:29Tesla struggled to sell vehicles as it faced angry protests over Musk's increasing involvement
08:37in politics.
08:38The company warned investors that changing political sentiment and rapidly evolving trade
08:44policy could have a meaningful impact on demand for its product in the near term.
08:51Musk, who has donated more than $250 million to Trump's re-election campaign, has faced global
08:59protests and calls to boycott Tesla.
09:10Harvey Weinstein is back on trial after his original MeToo case five years ago.
09:15The case is being retried because New York's highest court threw out Weinstein's landmark 2020 rape
09:22conviction.
09:23At the time they found the trial judge had unfairly allowed testimony against Weinstein based on
09:29allegations that weren't part of the case.
09:31The movie mogul was one of Hollywood's most powerful figures.
09:35Prosecutor Shannon Lucey said he used dream opportunities as weapons to prey on the three accusers in the case.
09:42He is charged with raping one woman and forcing oral sex on two others.
09:48Weinstein's retrial is playing out at a different cultural moment than the first,
09:52which happened during the height of the MeToo movement.
09:55The case also features some different people.
09:57There is a new judge and a jury counts seven women and five men this time.
10:02Weinstein has pleaded not guilty and denies raping or sexually assaulting anyone.
10:08The report found an increase in the molecule TFA, which is a PFAS residue, in European bottles sold in supermarkets.
10:32The survey was carried out in ten EU member states.
10:35Results revealed that levels were sometimes 100 times higher than those found in drinking water.
11:05Traces of TFA were also found in organic wines.
11:08Pan Europe suggests consumers to tread carefully as little is known about the forever chemical.
11:36With this report, Pan Europe wishes to challenge the EU member states.
11:40The 27 governments are due to meet next month to negotiate the possibility of banning a PFAS pesticide.
