00:00Good afternoon. My name is Phil Hewitt, Group Arts Editor at Sussex Newspapers. Lovely to
00:06speak to Kimara, who is heading back to the Moves Festival, which is part of the Brighton
00:11Festival. And it's at the Old Market on Sunday, May the 18th from 3pm. And this is as you
00:19and the band are heading towards the release of your second full EP this summer. And it's
00:25been a good time, hasn't it, since you turned up in Brighton and found it at home, as far
00:30as you were concerned. Tell me about it. Why did Brighton feel like that? Just of the people
00:40and the community, I would say. When people are friendly and welcoming, it's very easy
00:47to feel at home in a place and accepting as well. So I think those three things made me
00:53just feel at home in this city.
00:56And you came here for an open day at BIM and you left the course.
01:00Yeah, loved the course and never left. Well, I left BIM, but I didn't leave Brighton, yeah.
01:08And it was at BIM that you started your own songwriting and that was a big moment for you,
01:13wasn't it?
01:14Yeah, huge. I'd never written a song before. I say this quite often, I didn't know the
01:22difference between a verse and a chorus. So it was all very new to me. And I just did
01:28a lot of like, you could do one-on-one sessions. So I did that a lot to be like, okay, explain
01:33me everything about songwriting because I know nothing. Yeah. So it was really the beginning
01:39of my songwriting journey there at BIM. Yeah.
01:44Wow. Sounds great. And you were saying that right from the start, you would describe your
01:49music as soulful. What does that mean to your mind when you say soulful? What is soul all about?
01:55Mm-hmm. For me, soulful is when it touches something within. I never know really what it is.
02:05If it's my heart or like your body, just, ah, you want to hear more of it. You want to move
02:10or you just want to sit and listen to it over and over again. For me, that's something that
02:15soul music does to me. But there's also a lot of other like genres that give me that like blues
02:22blues or folk music or like rock and the guitar solos in there. Yeah. But I think it's quite
02:30far over itself. It's feeling the connection, isn't it? Sorry? It's feeling the connection.
02:36Exactly. Yeah. Yeah. A hundred percent. Fantastic. So it's a summer EP. And then what next? Is this
02:43going to be a good year for the band, do you think? Yeah, we've already got some really cool shows
02:49coming up and we are writing our first album. So that's kind of like the main focus of this year.
02:56Yeah. Fantastic. Oh, when do you hope to get the album out then?
03:01Next year, probably. I want to take my time for it. Also, everyone is just so busy. So at the moment,
03:08we're just like having writing sessions with the band. But also today, I'm flying to the Netherlands to
03:13do writing sessions over there. And then hopefully have a lot of songs that we can pick from them
03:20and then record it. Fantastic. Well, in the meantime, it's the Moves Festival at the Old Market
03:25in Hove on Sunday, 18th of May. Lovely to speak to you and good luck with everything. Thank you.
03:32Oh, thank you. Lovely to speak to you.
