00:00:00hello and welcome to the inside ellen road podcast with me joe donoghue and y.e.p chief
00:00:09at an appropriate level today as i imagine there'll still be a few of you nursing some
00:00:17sore heads because as i'm sure you're all aware leads are going up um what a day it was at ellen
00:00:24road on easter monday if you were lucky enough to be there incredible scenes from start to finish
00:00:28daniel farcus side holding up their end of the bargain i don't know not only beating but
00:00:33demolishing stoke city by six goals to nil which was followed by burnley's 2-1 win against sheffield
00:00:39united which confirmed leads place in the top flight next season graham i'm reluctant to launch
00:00:46into a volley of abuse at championship media room catering catering arrangements um because there
00:00:53are a lot of very friendly people who work very hard in those roles who've been very kind to us
00:00:57over the past two seasons um what i will say though is and those of you familiar with danny dyer and
00:01:04the football factory may recognize this i know what i'd rather do talking about why love it
00:01:09amen brother donahue amen uh congratulations to leads united you know everyone involved daniel farca
00:01:22uh his staff his players the backroom staff the medical team uh everyone in the kind of support
00:01:30roles everyone who works at ellen road to make match day special you know directors everybody but
00:01:36mostly the fans because it's their club and um yeah it's funny isn't it you know somebody
00:01:43in the backroom staff came over during the east stand celebrations and said uh they were booed off
00:01:49two weeks ago and like uh kind of chuckled and um football is is is mad football is an absolutely
00:01:57mad sport leeds united is a mad club um and they got it over the line and they got it over the line in
00:02:02the most impressive way possible six nil against stoke was just ridiculous i mean joe arcot was there
00:02:12uh and he sidled up to me at halftime and said this is not leeds united you know leeds united is
00:02:18nil nil for 89 minutes against stoke and then maybe conceding and then having to do it the hardest
00:02:24possible way maybe even on the last day leeds united is not winning six nil scoring four goals inside
00:02:2920 minutes to just completely remove all jeopardy and peril from the game um and that just was the
00:02:37start of a spectacular day ellen wrote to me it was absolutely superb it was fantastic uh i have
00:02:44watched the video that you've put together numerous times um to try and kind of let it sink in a little
00:02:50bit let it just soak in it a little bit i imagine for a lot of people it hasn't really sunk in i don't
00:02:55think for the players it will properly sink in probably not until they've finished off the
00:03:00season and they can go off to vegas or wherever it is they're going to go to celebrate um but
00:03:07magnificent absolutely brilliant what a day yeah um just some incredible sights and sounds uh around
00:03:15ellen road um and inside and outside uh on easter monday uh which we'll we'll get into
00:03:20a later point in the podcast um but i think because we haven't recorded since last week um
00:03:27it'd probably be best to to begin at at oxford where um graham and i turned up in the car and
00:03:34there was a bit of back and forth wasn't there it was a i really hope i hope they've got a a screen in
00:03:39the in the media room it's basically what you said um so we could watch the was it the 5 30 game
00:03:45between sheffield united and cardiff um we climb up to the top in fact we don't climb we got the lift
00:03:52uh we got up to the top floor where just to save your little legs yeah well you know it takes you
00:03:58a lot longer than you know someone who's a little bit younger and chipper um we got the lift up get
00:04:04into the media room greeted by uh the lovely ladies who work in there and as we scanned the room there was
00:04:10not a single television screen so what did we do we improvised graham how did we watch sheffield united
00:04:16cardiff uh we enlisted the help of a former professional footballer who shall remain nameless
00:04:25to protect protect him legally and uh he had the capability uh technologically on his phone
00:04:36to watch the game um i'll probably not say any more than that uh yeah probably best yeah set up
00:04:45his phone uh and we plopped it up propped it up on my laptop uh with my laptop open so that we could
00:04:52sit around this tiny screen gather around it and and watch that game before leeds united took on
00:04:57oxford um there was something really old school about the the night at oxford that i liked and i think
00:05:03it was the sight of people sitting on top of vans watching the game over the fence you don't get to
00:05:09watch games over a fence at this level very often and particularly where leeds are going you just don't
00:05:15get to and there was something almost like 19 1980s early 90s about that for me that i really loved
00:05:22um and at first we were wondering are they leeds fans or the oxford fans or are they just
00:05:27you know workmen who happen to be in the area and have parked their vans fortuitously
00:05:31and then of course the the flags came out and the yellow bucket hats came out
00:05:35and they proved once again that leeds united fans get where water cannot
00:05:39yeah ultimately they weren't going to be stopped from watching that game just because
00:05:44just because you know the the admin of having a ticket um they were gonna they were gonna park up
00:05:49and make sure they got a good spot um i can't say that i've been to many grounds which have
00:05:54uh three sides and have one which is a car park um i think oxford are building a new stadium
00:06:00or are certainly in the in the process of of the planning to do so um so that might be the the
00:06:07only and hopefully the only opportunity we get and those fans got to go to the casam stadium um
00:06:13but yeah it was it was a good night wasn't it at oxford on friday they got the job done they were
00:06:19really professional in the manner in which they did it um they looked every bit potential champions and
00:06:28also uh a worthy premier league team because they just i keep saying it but they got the job done
00:06:34it was exactly what was required um one real bit of quality uh in the in the build up to the goal
00:06:40uh joe rodent's pass which kind of cuts in between the center half and the fullback jayden bogles on the
00:06:46run um and we'll get on to him because he's been absolutely excellent recently uh and and mano solomon
00:06:51is gambling at the back post um he's he's there to to stick it into the roof of the net and um
00:06:57from there the leads weren't really troubled that much um but they did just kept oxford at arm's length
00:07:04they tried to probe for that second goal farka said afterwards that he would have preferred to have got
00:07:09that second but you know what one nil away from home at this time of the season um when the pressure
00:07:15was really on just what the doctor ordered yeah they they erected a shield wall that proved
00:07:22uh impenetrable for the oxford trebuchet which is your phrase uh lest anyone else in the leeds united
00:07:29press pack forget that joe donoghue's phrase um yeah the long throw it was a feature but it wasn't
00:07:36a threat because leeds defended so well i wonder if joe rodent's headache was worse after the oxford
00:07:45game than it was after the celebrations on monday night because he headed so many uh long throws
00:07:50long balls crosses clear it was among the the most complete central defensive performances we've seen
00:07:57from him i think it might even have been his best performance it wasn't just the heading
00:08:03there was that tackle that he made to win a throw in as well when a player looked like he was going
00:08:08to go through in the last minute there was the pass that you mentioned for bogle that was just
00:08:13sublime it was uh it was a fantastic performance it really was and you know the question was with
00:08:21the pressure ratcheted right up to 11 who was going to stand up and and put leads on their back
00:08:26and and be a leader um rode on stuck his hand in the air and he wasn't the only one but
00:08:33oxford was i think oxford was his night um i think he was he was the undoubted star of the show
00:08:41in that game and and although they they never got the second goal and they could have done although
00:08:47they didn't um it never felt like a goal was going to go in at the other end like it it was it was
00:08:55pressure from oxford but it it wasn't they didn't cut through leads they didn't threaten particularly
00:09:03uh and and any semblance of peril was dealt with by rodan or amperee or um darlo when he was needed
00:09:11yeah i think it's right that that joe rodan had that sort of performance and had that sort of game
00:09:17um at such a crucial period because he has been he's been pretty much i think he is the only ever
00:09:21present in this leads team you know how i think it's how many 80 maybe consecutive starts that he's had
00:09:28in the championship you know availability for a football player is such a valuable commodity and
00:09:34rodan makes himself available clearly by the way he takes care of himself off the pitch um you know
00:09:40he obviously puts himself in harm's way on it um but you know he's he's he's someone who is is a
00:09:46is a model professional um and yeah it it was really i suppose cathartic for for him i imagine to
00:09:54to have that that oxford game and then to roll into uh stoke on on the monday um riding the quest of a
00:10:01wave but i mean that's but i i i love to to discuss the actual match too much because this is such a
00:10:08unique period in the history of the club and um i feel like there's so much going on around the 90
00:10:13minutes that um we should probably discuss what else was was happening uh at oxford as you mentioned
00:10:19you know god bless the afl the van zone as someone termed it which i think was was
00:10:24was brilliant um i mean if if you ever wanted to have an aerial view of frankie and benny's and
00:10:30hollywood bowl whilst working at a championship fixture um the casam stadium is is where to do it
00:10:36um at full time we had uh we we were escorted down or sorry directed down to a breeze block press
00:10:45conference room that i can only presume doubled as a bomb shelter um because it was tiny cold and had
00:10:53absolutely no signal um so next time we're at oxford hopefully in the fa cup um i'm gonna bring
00:11:00a satellite phone because it was the only place in the entire ground without any signal you know the
00:11:05one place that you're actually going to need it to sort of transmit the quotes that have been uh have
00:11:10been said by the the two managers um but graham you bumped into um some some uh european football
00:11:17dignitaries didn't you yeah um was walking back from the press conference room to go back up to
00:11:25the press room to work and uh did a bit of a double take as patrick clivert uh came walking down the
00:11:32corridor uh indonesia manager famously um and although some people have suggested that he was
00:11:37there to have a conversation with pascal stroik to try and sway him to his indonesian roots um oxford have
00:11:45an indonesian player who actually played in the game uh and of course he's you know got that
00:11:50that dutch connection as well so he had a picture with peru um and and maybe that's what did it maybe
00:11:57that's what inspired joel peru to score four goals against stoke city maybe brushing with true
00:12:04dutch center forward greatness what player clivert was by the way still looks incredible
00:12:10like just looks like he could step out onto the pitch and score four goals um and i believe
00:12:16jordy croif was there as well but i didn't spy him uh but i believe he was there as well um
00:12:22yeah that little room at oxford that's probably where they do their contract negotiations
00:12:27that's the kind of place that you would invite an agent in and make it as cold and unpleasant and
00:12:33intimidating as possible um they didn't do a number on leads did they and a lot of people
00:12:39expected them to they expected it to make it very very difficult for leads and i think
00:12:45after the three draws you know they're booed off at luton performance wasn't quite there
00:12:51to then win those three games by a single goal margin each time
00:12:57says an awful lot about this leads team and the character that the people were questioning
00:13:02and the mentality that people wondered is it there because it wasn't there this time last season
00:13:07this team didn't have i mean it wasn't exactly this team but this club the players represent this club
00:13:12didn't have the necessary mentality to deal with it this time last season but something has changed
00:13:18you know personnel has changed but also mentality maybe a little bit more experience a bit more nice
00:13:25um but even doing it without you know dan james who's been an absolute star this season is another
00:13:34impressive aspect of it they just stood up at the very right time and they put themselves in a
00:13:38position where they go into easter monday knowing they're properly on the cusp of glory um and with
00:13:45that in mind i think that that makes it all the more incredible to do what they did in the three games prior
00:13:50yeah and in in beating oxford they surpassed last season's uh points tally you know 90 points in
00:13:56any season is is a great achievement but to do it two years in a row you know leads desperately
00:14:00unlucky last year not to go up um having accrued that points tally um to then surpass it and then
00:14:06to then go and put in that performance that they did against stoke was was exceptional i do jody
00:14:11cruyff was there at oxford as well i didn't see him with my own eyes but i did see a picture uh he was
00:14:16also with and let's not besmirch a rare premier league sticker album collectors item of the mid
00:14:232000s wigan athletics denny landsat i don't remember uh or rather i don't recall what he's up to these
00:14:29days but he was also at the kassam stadium on friday night taking in a leeds game um he i think he scored
00:14:37an absolute thunder bastard for wigan which won goal of the month around like 2005 2006 um if if anyone
00:14:45wants to go and check that out memory serves me i think it was against arsenal um his assistant
00:14:51manager of indonesia well that would make sense why he was there then you see makes a lot of sense
00:14:58doesn't it jobs for the boys patrick's got the the manager's job denny's assistant jody cruyff i
00:15:03imagine is probably the the director of football hmm it's class those those dutch lads know how to how
00:15:10to do it um speaking of dutch lads who know how to do it that's very david brent there isn't it yeah
00:15:16careful i know yeah yeah need to be very careful um dutch men should not be punished for scoring four
00:15:25goals at ellen road in the space of 41 minutes um how about joel peru i mean he either borrowed
00:15:32clivert's boots or there was some sort of yeah he sort of must have rubbed clivert's shoulder like a
00:15:38genie in a bottle um to to help him rediscover his scoring form because that was that was an
00:15:44absolute clinic against doke wasn't it it was sensational you know the the early goal for
00:15:51leeds united has become a real feature and particularly at ellen road you know they score
00:15:54an early goal and then you think oh that's better uh but unlike the last time they scored an early
00:15:59goal at ellen road they didn't concede almost instantly after what they did instead which is a far
00:16:03better what's a far better tactic than conceding straight away is scoring straight away so they
00:16:09just went and scored another and peru those first two finishes were just classic peru really you know
00:16:15slot in both chances inside the post that little gap that the keeper couldn't reach um like daisy
00:16:23cutter finishes he's very very good at those i mean he is obviously he's got all kinds of finishing
00:16:27and we i certainly do i don't know about you but i really enjoy watching the the shooting
00:16:32drills just before the warm-up ends because peru quite often finds the top corner he finds the
00:16:39bottom corner he absolutely starches shots past cairns um and he puts on a bit of a clinic but to do it
00:16:46in a game when the pressure is right on top of you uh it suggests to me that he he probably is he's the
00:16:55man in the leading out squad probably most worthy of the nickname the ice man because he's um he just
00:17:02looks he looks like nothing is he looks like nothing's going on not suggesting he's got
00:17:09nothing going on in his head i'm suggesting that he looks like nothing's going on around him you know
00:17:12that there is no pressure there is no 36 000 people um and it was a far cry from the the finishing that
00:17:20he showed previously at ellen road in the game where his all-round game was maybe okay but but he just
00:17:26couldn't find the net and then all of a sudden everything he hits goes in first two finishes were great
00:17:30i was debating this with uh eric because him and his pals were talking about it was the roar for the
00:17:36first goal better or the roar for the second goal second correct because the second goal had an
00:17:43element of oh my god we've scored again and the game's only six was it six minutes old six for the
00:17:49first second six for the first eight for the second and you score two goals inside two minutes
00:17:56there's an element of surprise in the roar you know i love the differential in the roars ellen road
00:18:02and the second roar was just sublime and then you think my god they're actually gonna do this you know
00:18:10that this is very much on um and then they just didn't stop and stoke just evaporated and as much as
00:18:18stoke will say we didn't turn up we didn't take part that was robin's phrase we didn't lay a glove
00:18:25on them they couldn't leeds just absolutely ran riot and when leeds are in that form i don't think
00:18:31anyone can stick with them farpo was on it bogle was he was like a man possessed wasn't he
00:18:38yeah those those high turnovers in the the final third for for both goals tanaka got the first one
00:18:46bogle got the second and then to be fair the the rest were just you know they peeled into a blur
00:18:50because there were so many um bogle i think you i think he won eight to eight of eight tackles
00:18:55against stoke which is very man possessed like of him um he's in great form at the moment uh and
00:19:03it's exactly the sort of form you want him to carry on and carry into the premier league because
00:19:08um i think he'll probably think he didn't really get a fair whack at it last time
00:19:12with sheffield united which was a largely understaffed sheffield united team uh for the
00:19:18premier league this time i think he's probably got a better chance of showing what he's about
00:19:22certainly going forward um but yeah it was just it was wave after wave of of leeds attacks um and
00:19:29i know i mean obviously not being a fan you can sort of detach yourself from from the emotion of it but
00:19:35you know in my mind there was absolutely no doubt that monday was going to go exactly the way it
00:19:40was supposed to after those two goals went in um i know it's very easy to say but yeah no doubt in
00:19:46my mind whatsoever that it was going that way and i think six i mean given on the balance of the first
00:19:5320-25 minutes six is probably quite a generous scoreline to stoke because i think leeds put up
00:19:59like 2.5 xg within 20 minutes it's ridiculous um just i think when i checked as well there were seven
00:20:05big chances that leeds had created in the first half so they'd scored five and then there were two
00:20:11others that johansen had denied them um which is just ridiculous um numbers so yeah the the actual
00:20:19game itself was was fantastic um there were uh clamors for or clamoring for harry gray to be
00:20:27introduced uh from the bench for pretty much the entire second half every time he went down to warm
00:20:32up along the sideline sort of scanning over his shoulder to see if chris domagala was summoning
00:20:38him back it was always somebody else and then uh eventually um ellen road got that moment where
00:20:44where harry was was brought on making his debut at 16 incredible um what a moment that was
00:20:51yeah absolutely superb um just want to go back briefly you correctly identified that tanaka won the first
00:20:58won the the the high turnover for the first goal but immediately prior to that gruev won a higher
00:21:06turnover and and leeds had a little attack that broke down from that inside the penalty area and that
00:21:10for me set the tone the fact that gruev was so switched on and so on it to get up there and win
00:21:17that ball i thought his was a very important but understated performance on the day um and the other
00:21:23thing i'd like to mention before we got on to harry gray junior firbo's finishing i mean just
00:21:27sensational to miss kick the ball so perfectly and see it spoon up into the air and over the
00:21:34goalkeeper it was just that's when you knew yeah this is very much this is very much leeds united's
00:21:39day um and farka almost surprised me a little bit with harry gray like we know he was in the squad
00:21:47because dan james was out and sam chambers was ill and that opened up a space for an attacker um
00:21:53and you almost felt like it's too storybook for farka you know he's he's all about not giving away
00:22:04gifts and not not playing players just because they've come through the academy and it's a nice
00:22:08story and and towards the end of seasons you look across the efl you will see 16 17 18 year olds
00:22:15all of a sudden appearing in match day squads and getting on the pitch for teams that are relegated
00:22:21because it's a nice story and it'll generate a bit of positivity at a time when you're getting
00:22:27absolutely slaughtered by your fans um by teams that have nothing else to play for because they're
00:22:32already up or they're countering to it um so you do see this kind of thing but farka doesn't strike
00:22:38me as that kind of manager and uh i don't think he would ever have been swayed by the
00:22:46the story you know that that that that this is another gray uh after the last gray who was so
00:22:54good after all the other grays who've played for the club i don't think he would have bent to that
00:23:00on a day when the pressure was going to be so high on leads i think it had to be on merit i just don't
00:23:07see any other way that he ended up in the squad and maybe then with the wind so secured farka thought
00:23:13ah you know what this would be really nice actually and he's done well in training let's get him on um
00:23:19and it was brilliant to see you know the the real storybook ending would have been harry gray going
00:23:26through and scoring you know to add the seventh that would have been perfection itself wouldn't it but
00:23:31you don't often get perfection in football um and it was just great to see him get his first minutes
00:23:38i was gonna say um there were two tens in the player reigns i thought you'd taken a funny turn
00:23:44um because uh there were quite a few people who who tweeted me suggesting that you were still going
00:23:50to give joel pirou an eight despite the fact that he'd score scored four goals from four shots uh i was
00:23:55pleased to see that you you didn't um you know you may may have been nudged a little bit by a colleague
00:24:01or so um but yeah there's there's no agenda here against uh against joel pirou from the yp cfw it's
00:24:09uh it was it was a stunning performance from him and and worthy of a 10 but jayden bogle also got a 10
00:24:15because you know how do you have a more perfect defensive and attacking display than that clean sheet
00:24:22under real pressure circumstances um and you were just so impactful going forward
00:24:27yeah he was the best thing that jayden bogle did which is probably my favorite thing he's done all
00:24:33season was that cross from gruev from the left ferpo flicks it on over his head bogle watches it come
00:24:40down and takes it on the kind of half turn touches it to go past his man like sends his man and he's
00:24:49he's maybe only five yards from the the byline six yards from the byline when he does this
00:24:55and to take it down to keep it controlled to beat his man and then to provide the cross i think it
00:25:01was i think it was his cross wasn't it that furpo then um maybe takes a nick off aronson and then
00:25:06furpo sticks in i think that was that goal um that was absolutely sensational uh he was just a man
00:25:13completely on his game um highlighting that he is the best right back in the division and you know
00:25:22you know we've often said this season that tanaka is the signing of the season but i think bogle
00:25:29might want a word in that argument because for five million uh sheffield united have been hard
00:25:36unfortunately yeah i think in recent weeks because you know we've had that little drop off from tanaka
00:25:43and bogle has really really come to the fore he's been so important um recency bias that's what it is
00:25:49yes and no well actually yeah it's a bit of recency bias um yeah i think it's it's a real
00:25:58straight shootout between those two for signing of the season um because yeah i mean combined what
00:26:05eight million if they can if they can repeat that caliber of business i'm not saying caliber of player
00:26:11going up because you know you're probably going to have to buy ready-made premier league players
00:26:15and they cost a lot more but if you can repeat that caliber of business um yeah that's um that's
00:26:22exactly what leads need to do in the summer um before we do get to the summer though we uh we still have
00:26:27quite a lot to get through from uh monday evening well monday afternoon monday evening um so finished
00:26:34ellen road 6-0 willie nyonto getting in on the act as well uh really nice to see him get a goal because
00:26:39you could tell he was desperate um obviously coming in the circumstances that uh did not expect a header
00:26:45at the back post you don't expect the smallest man on the pitch to to leap like that but but he did
00:26:50unmarked as quite a few of the lead goals were actually um not to take any gloss off it um but it
00:26:57was a man of solomon cross from quite literally the perfect position on the pitch and i say perfect
00:27:03because it's almost like one member of the inside ellen road podcast joe had written a piece about
00:27:09how mana solomon can be devastating from that very very specific part of the pitch i don't know if you
00:27:14can remember who that was graham um but after that um there was uh the post-match press conferences
00:27:21mark robbins came in and did his best impression of have you seen steve bruce after hole were relegated
00:27:28that video where he kind of just looks up at all the reporters and it's just like hey yeah
00:27:39it was the ghost of mark robbins you know i like i like mark robbins but so do i
00:27:45part of his soul was missing as he came in for that press conference he was so visibly gutted and
00:27:51let's not forget everyone was talking like stoke were safe you know stoke were already home and hosed
00:27:57and then they went and lost six nil they play sheffield united next who need to somehow start
00:28:01generating some positivity in a bit of form before the playoffs and they could be caught by luton
00:28:06now it might not happen it might be on the unlikelier end of things but the very last thing
00:28:10you need when you're still not quite mathematically safe is to go and get absolutely spanked six nil
00:28:16away from home and he was wearing all of that all over his face yeah he's um he's conceded nine
00:28:24goals without reply at ellen road this season because obviously he was here for coventry's
00:28:29three nil defeat as well um so yeah don't think he'll be wanting to come back to ellen road in a
00:28:36hurry um yeah i actually didn't hear him um speaking because it was so so like low volume i was around
00:28:43the corner a little bit just doing um doing a little bit of work uploading graham's ratings if
00:28:47anyone would like to know how that that little process works um but then daniel farker came in
00:28:53and he was a lot more uh effusive with his words about his his team um but he wouldn't because because
00:29:03the burnley sheffield united game was ongoing he wouldn't commit to being you know to celebrating or
00:29:08saying you know this has been a great year for my lads i'm delighted that that were promoted just even
00:29:13even even when burnley score to go a goal up which then means that sheffield united need two
00:29:20i can't remember the last time burnley conceded two goals in the same game um and he just maintains
00:29:26that poker face didn't he it was incredibly i looked to my left and saw uh josh brownhill celebrating
00:29:32and then instantly looked at farker and he'd seen it because he kept looking at the screen he was
00:29:37literally watching the game as he spoke did not break rhythm in his sentence at all didn't break
00:29:43into a smile didn't like catch anybody's eye or raise his eyebrow just carried on um didn't
00:29:51didn't scratch his eyelid no that could be a very good moment for us yes um but yeah i think
00:30:01it's funny because clubs are in this this awful situation where you have to prepare
00:30:05for the eventuality that you might be confirmed promoted so you have to have the t-shirts made
00:30:10and everything but you can't let on like it's all a big game isn't it it's it's just all a big
00:30:17drama that you can't let on that you've done those things and you can't let anyone see the t-shirts or see
00:30:23you celebrating or hear you speaking in a way that suggests you think it's done because if sheffield united
00:30:31go and win that game and it takes the the uh promotion race into next weekend then you would
00:30:36look like an absolute jerk we would all point out that you're you were premature with your celebrations
00:30:44so you have to remain um fairly stoic and keep this poker face on even though you know that in i don't
00:30:50know 45 minutes time it will be largely ramazani dancing and spraying champagne and leading the
00:30:58celebrations like he's started 44 games consecutively and scored 25 goals um you know that that's all
00:31:05possible and around the corner but you're just not there yet and it's a really weird time and it was
00:31:10it was a weird little period where the press room kind of started to empty uh stoke filed out and their
00:31:17journalists filed out some of the national guys left and some of the people who i don't even know who they
00:31:22are but they pop up in the the press room every week and enjoy the food um that the room sort of
00:31:28started to clear and then it was just kind of those with an interest in leeds united mostly that were
00:31:34left and uh and some of the staff came in to watch the game and you could hear through the walls the
00:31:42reactions of the lead squad to what was going on and you could hear you could hear the foot the
00:31:47reaction from to the first goal though couldn't you and what i found really funny was not only had far
00:31:52parker just said well well he wasn't reacting to it at all and then through the adjoining wall you
00:31:58could hear the home dressing room go slightly go mental about 30 seconds later but it was on a slight
00:32:05delay i quite like the idea that they were watching on somebody's phone as well potentially
00:32:11and they like like on sky go or something uh and they had a 30 second delay like there is on there
00:32:16um yeah it was it was very it was very bizarre sort of atmosphere wasn't it sam byron with a dodgy stick
00:32:26and everybody crowded around his locker as he plays it on his phone um yeah it was really really strange
00:32:32uh i mean strange things happen at this at this time of the season um seven million pound strikers
00:32:38suddenly score their first goal uh and make it a bit more interesting at turf moore um but i i think
00:32:49if there's one team we could trust to do the right thing by leeds united on such a day it's it's burnley
00:32:55they have been you have to give them their dues i know that we've we've taken the mic fairly relentlessly
00:33:01of uh just how boring they are but to go unbeaten for 31 games is is pretty sensational to concede as
00:33:11as few goals as they have is utterly ridiculous and i think everyone knew that they had an inevitability
00:33:17about them that that they would they would win that game they certainly wouldn't lose that game but
00:33:22they would probably win that game and once they went ahead you just knew that they knew what to do you
00:33:27know they they would head it and kick it they would make it difficult they'd be in the right
00:33:30place and sheffield united just didn't have it and they just haven't had it in recent weeks this is
00:33:36where it's got away from them and the quality i think has shown um with leeds united and with burnley
00:33:43the quality not only in terms of talent and ability but in tactics and in mentality that these two teams
00:33:50just decided to a wilder said it didn't they they put their foot on the gas and took it away
00:33:55from the blades that's exactly what happened leads one four on the trot four on the spin for the
00:34:00first time this season they won four on the spin and burnley just continued on their on their way
00:34:05unbeaten and you have to say that the league table shows at the end of that game what it should show
00:34:11you know that the positions are deserved and i think why you be biased aside i think leeds united
00:34:18deserve to be top because they've been the most exciting team the most dynamic team the most dominant
00:34:24team when it comes to attacking they've done both sides of the game really really well burnley have
00:34:30at times relied on doing the defensive side impeccably and struggled a little bit scoring goals and being
00:34:38attacking um but both sides absolutely deserve to go up automatically yes uh do we think that in the
00:34:46past couple of days daniel farka has been the fire beast that he promised he would be um you actually have
00:34:52a little bit of insight don't you about why he may have used that specific term because it's a very
00:34:56odd thing to say but graham being the linguist that you are you have an explanation don't you
00:35:03yes uh i had a i had a message on twitter from a journalist who works in germany um by the name of archie
00:35:13and he said i don't know if anyone's pointed this out a couple of these fans had actually to give them
00:35:19the jew by the stage but farka said he will be a fire beast he's literally saying the german word for
00:35:24party animal uh which is fire beast um so there is it wasn't just that he'd come up with the world's
00:35:32most incredible term for a heavy drinker uh ai is is an absolute abomination um but the ai generated image
00:35:46of farka on fire um was absolutely tremendous um yeah he was basically saying that i will i will be
00:35:54on the table i will be having said all season i'm not quite dancing on the tables he would be dancing
00:36:00on the table and uh and he was looking forward to beer after beer after beer um and once it was done
00:36:06you know that by that stage the players had all gathered in the bremner suite um and there was a
00:36:12uh security cordon in place the likes of which i'm not sure i've seen since i lived back home um
00:36:19just to make sure that no pesky local journalists slip through the net um glad to see which guys
00:36:26they did try uh and were told in certain terms to um what's uh have we ever have we ever dropped an
00:36:35f-bomb on this uh on this podcast no no you can't can't be doing that go go forth and work on your
00:36:40quotes was the uh yeah the general gist what was said um yeah sky got in there you know great to see
00:36:47great bunch of lads um been ever so helpful for leeds united this season and leeds united support so
00:36:53deserved uh um i love i love tim though so i was glad that it was him uh and they managed to capture
00:37:01the scenes as leeds you know celebrated promotion and started to to drench the room in champagne and
00:37:06obviously we'd hear all of it because we're 15 feet away um watching it on youtube on the club's youtube
00:37:13channel uh as i said in my newsletter that's come out today um not part of the party but partly party
00:37:22to the party was yeah it was was was what we were um and then it was all just a bit surreal because you
00:37:30kind of caught in this uh limbo of like where's the story like where do we need to be because no
00:37:37we're not going to sit here in the media room um while it all happens around us and and not see it
00:37:44and not be able to write about it and not get some color for our for our reports but do we want to be
00:37:49outside where the atmosphere is and eventually the players are going to we knew the players would go to
00:37:54the east stand steps as they did last time we knew that was going to happen uh there was no buses
00:38:00squirreled away behind bushes uh this time and we also thought but do we need to be in here in case
00:38:08there's an opportunity to speak to some of the players or um maybe some of them might stumble
00:38:12in mistakenly in the in a drunken haze and we might be able to put microphones in front of them
00:38:16so it was a bit of a limbo situation and then at some stage you decided we need footage of what's
00:38:22going on outside and you you scurried out and you can tell your your little tail uh presently and
00:38:28then myself baron cross and the athletic decided sack it we haven't been invited to the east stand
00:38:34celebration but nor has anyone said please do not come to the east stand celebration so we
00:38:40trespassed ever so slightly uh went walkabout and followed the sound um and happened upon the east
00:38:47down steps and stood off to the side and were able to get some footage and just a little
00:38:52taste of of a moment really that i think everyone deserved and i've seen quite a few people say
00:38:57that it wasn't a patch on 2020 and i understand that 2020 had a spontaneity to it and um that it
00:39:06was what what some of the people who went there that night is what they what they absolutely needed
00:39:11at that minute was to be there and be with other leads fans and celebrate it but i think if you asked
00:39:16all those people who stayed at home in 2020 because either they had to because of medical health reasons
00:39:22because they felt they had to out of civic duty or because simply they were told to by their club
00:39:27and the authorities you ask those people which celebration was better and i think uh eastern
00:39:33monday will come out a clear winner um but there were thousands thousands upon thousands of people
00:39:38outside the stand and they very cleverly thanks to police advice split the kind of focal point in
00:39:45two so one set of one half of the squad went to one area the other squad went to the other area so it
00:39:50meant that there wasn't a big crush of people trying to see one you know small narrow window in which
00:39:57all the players appeared and it gave players the chance to celebrate properly and have their moments
00:40:02and some of them needed no encouragement uh harry gray harry gray they're like a grizzled veteran uh
00:40:10taking all the plaudits largely ramazani again um apparently built for such a time as this i mean he
00:40:16he he was like the the mc wasn't he of the of the entire thing uh but then sam byram having to be
00:40:22you know physically forced down the steps to go and take a little bit of the plaudits
00:40:28um there's a picture of sam byram with a bucket hat on and what looks like some sort of
00:40:34i don't know fruity cider beverage might have been black currant juice you never know as being the
00:40:39professional that he is um that honestly looks like he's draped in a flag it looks like he's something
00:40:44from a butland's weekender um that they'd use in the brochure that you are going to have the best
00:40:50time at um housed in our old army barracks um it looks that's exactly what it reminded me of um but
00:41:06yeah they were they were great scenes outside ellen road um inside ellen road love it when they name the
00:41:12podcast on the podcast um within the the east stand gates um there was patrick bamford leading some
00:41:20chants um which uh yeah because i don't think we'll don't think we'll repeat on uh on this pod um
00:41:28because we might come into contact with the subject of those chants at some point in the near future
00:41:33um and yeah there was i mean largely ramazani holding a flare ethan ampidoo hoisting willing
00:41:40yonto onto his shoulders uh and then leading him down the steps um dan james leading them the solomon
00:41:47again ole ole chant um yeah there was so much so much to sort of if you're a leeds fan to just
00:41:57take pride in and think wow that this is this is my club uh and i'm so pleased i'm here for this moment
00:42:02um the it's so so brave of you i would also just like to say and probably speak on behalf of the
00:42:08supporters so brave of you to to trespass and to you know to do all of that um and and you know it's
00:42:16so noble a pursuit to to make yourself you know right there front and center a little bit off the
00:42:22side um front and center to be to be to the side of the celebrations whilst you know other members of
00:42:30the press pack other members of the yep press pack um had been dispatched to city center bars and and
00:42:37one in particular was taking 20 minutes to snake through the crowd trying to get a little bit of
00:42:42footage and color for the day um you know it's it's i but you know we we don't complain about it
00:42:49um you know do you know what um just two things quickly as baron and i were walking towards the
00:42:56sound we had no idea we were going to find the players on those steps you know for all we knew
00:43:00they were still in a in a box up in the east stand or or peering out windows and there's this horrible
00:43:06moment where baron suggested that we were going to walk out in front to in front of like a waiting
00:43:11crowd who are waiting for players and stuff you know almost like we were walking out on stage at
00:43:15nebworth or or glassonbury or something and for a minute my heart dropped into my stomach and and i
00:43:21wanted to just kind of peer around the corner instead of striding around the corner and thank
00:43:26god that no one no no one actually noticed our presence because the the players were taking all
00:43:31the uh the attention um the other thing that i was reminded of as ethan ampadoo hoisted little
00:43:37willie nyonto onto his shoulders and walked down some concrete steps i'm old enough to remember the 1993
00:43:43league cup final at wembley when um steve morrow bangers steve morrow um i think he scored
00:43:51for arsenal uh to win it um he was dropped by tony adams onto his shoulder and broke his collarbone
00:44:01and left the pitch uh with an oxygen mask on on i think he was stretched it off um it was absolutely
00:44:09horrific it's horrific and all i could see when ampadoo was literally bouncing willie nyonto on his
00:44:15shoulders on on a concrete surface all i could see was disaster um so thank god uh he will be
00:44:22absolutely fine um hangover pending to uh to train again this week um so yeah the players were kind of
00:44:30celebrating and having their moments and then um there were various other people backroom staff and
00:44:35um some of them very very graciously came to have words and and share in their moment and it was great
00:44:40to see some people who are very much unsung heroes getting to fully celebrate their hard work behind
00:44:45the scenes this season and daniel farka arrives and the players um i had literally just had the thought
00:44:52it's a shame they don't have like the american tradition of of tipping the ice water from a gatorade
00:45:00barrel over the head coach um because that would be really funny to see farka like a drowned rat and then
00:45:06rothwell and a couple of others approached him with champagne bottles and were spraying him
00:45:11and it ha it happened at that moment that bern and i were making our way to the back wall to kind
00:45:14of stay out the way farka spotted me physically accosted me and said yes graham just stay there for a
00:45:24minute while the back of my coat took the brunt of the champagne spray on his behalf um which are you
00:45:30saying are you saying that leeds united's manager physically assaulted you are you is that what you're
00:45:36putting on record on this podcast i even think that the spraying of someone with it with a liquid would
00:45:41probably count as common law salt but on this occasion as long as we get some access to some
00:45:47players pretty soon then i will be willing to overlook and drop the charges um yeah he he was i
00:45:56wouldn't say he cut loose daniel farka but he was very very happy and um every everyone i think was
00:46:03there's probably a measure of relief but also just a lot of young men caught up in a moment of
00:46:10oh my god we've actually achieved something monumental here and they have you know they have
00:46:15because where the club was last year after wembley and everything that happened in the summer archie
00:46:22going georgie going georgie going um diego urente going you know there was some real some real
00:46:31difficulties to overcome and there was no it was no certain thing that leeds united would go up
00:46:38this season there really was no certain thing that they would get it right a second time and be able to go
00:46:44again uh so to get 94 points at least is unbelievable just absolutely unbelievable and to finish it in the
00:46:54style they did was was absolutely class um and dan james deserved every drop of however much alcohol
00:47:00it took to get him in that state in such an unbelievably quick time well i was thinking this
00:47:07you know that they don't drink or they shouldn't drink for the entire season and for the majority
00:47:12of their lives their tolerance must be on the floor yeah you'd say that but i have known a few
00:47:19professional footballers who played at a very high level for a club of this size that plays in white
00:47:25and who have been able to handle their alcohol incredibly well um from which era uh uh modern day era um
00:47:34um and yeah you'd be surprised i think but but dan james is also very small so and also he wasn't
00:47:42playing so perhaps he had a slight head start uh on on everyone else but either way um it feels like
00:47:49if there's a race dan james wants to win it and the race to oblivion was one that he also was victorious
00:47:56in on uh on monday uh so yeah they had their east stand celebrations and then they um and then they made
00:48:02their way back inside and then eventually found themselves at um hotel in the city center for
00:48:08for their after party um and someone close to one of the players one of the senior players has said
00:48:13um i took this slightly tongue-in-cheek they said that he didn't celebrate because he wants 100 points
00:48:18on a league title um he definitely celebrated the player in question but i do think there's probably
00:48:23been an element of enjoy it but enjoy it by being slightly disciplined because we would like to go
00:48:31on and and win the title um and i know that people will have varying opinions on this but there are two
00:48:37games to play there is an opportunity to get a hundred points and and lift a trophy and i know
00:48:43ethan amper do wants it you know he's been very very clear on that that they were going to celebrate
00:48:48fully as they well should but then they want to go and win a title and the fixture list for once
00:48:54has been unbelievably kind to leeds united because they had a full week in between the stoke game and
00:49:00the bristol city game at ellen road and uh and that has just fallen so fortuitously because burnley
00:49:07play on saturday early doors yeah they've been given a couple of days off haven't they um i saw
00:49:14a few of them on day two of celebrations uh at a at a bar i don't know where i can't remember where it
00:49:20was whether it's in leeds city center or maybe it was in harrogate um but there was joe rothwell dan
00:49:25james laji ramazani uh i can't remember there were five or six of them in this picture that barred take
00:49:34bogle was there yes yeah um which i think is great because you know what the the day session after
00:49:40you've had whilst you've had a hangover is often the better of the two days right
00:49:49also if you're an injured player right now you are loving life like you are thanking your lucky
00:49:54stars that you are an injured player because you have carte blanche almost carte blanche to to properly
00:50:02have at it don't you not that we condone excess and everything in moderation um but when you have been
00:50:09as disciplined as they'll have had to be for the last year and for a lot of years in their career
00:50:14when moments like this arrive you absolutely have to celebrate and for some uh that means dancing in
00:50:21the middle of a circle of players with your meta shades on capturing the moment and spraying everybody
00:50:27with champagne and for others like al tanaka it means kind of being a little bit in the background
00:50:31sitting off to one side you know someone who saw the players at the sky lounge party said that tanaka
00:50:36was kind of not particularly having much part in the in the more exuberant celebrations with the
00:50:43kind of the more boisterous um and i think he is slightly more reserved character slightly more
00:50:49introverted um i mean he has his moments you know willie nanto has made sure that that that there have
00:50:55been moments with tanaka this season where he's been drawn into dancing on the pitch and whatnot but
00:50:59he definitely is a slightly character slightly quieter character um so i just hope that they've all
00:51:04been able to sell it and felt like they've been able to celebrate it properly um because it's been
00:51:10earned very much and there will be more celebrations of course and i think monday at ellen road against
00:51:15bristol city will be another special day because they'll walk out as a promoted team and they might
00:51:21finish the day as champions potentially yes um we'll talk about sort of the permutations i mean i'm saying
00:51:29this because i don't think that burnley are going to lose on saturday um which is the only circumstance
00:51:35in which leads can be champions on monday night um i think what we'll do is we'll discuss sort of the
00:51:43permutations of the title and previewing the final day um in next week's episode before the plymouth game
00:51:50but um for the last 10 minutes or so of this week's episode um i want to ask you a couple of quickfire
00:51:56questions about the premier league where obviously leads are going back to um is there a particular
00:52:02game or is there a particular ground that you're most looking forward to visiting and actually are
00:52:07there any you haven't been to um let me bring up the premier league table because i spend all of the
00:52:14season with my head almost entirely in the championship um and i care very little for what
00:52:20happens above and below it um right looking down the list i think you'll have been to all of them
00:52:27because i've done all of them yeah i've done all of them uh either in the championship or in the
00:52:35premier league with leads um i'm most looking forward to looking forward to going to liverpool because i
00:52:45got to see little joe arkett again original joe og joe um some say better but not my words no each
00:52:51joe you know different joes for different needs they each have their their own special gifts um spurs
00:52:58for obvious reasons the press foods is sensational we should get dressed up when we go to spurs um and
00:53:05make it a special occasion date night well like like john c reilly and will ferrell leeds united part
00:53:11owner will ferrell um in stepbrothers when they turn up to a job that requires them to clean bathrooms
00:53:16in tuxedos very apt um manchester city for similar reasons to spurs um not particularly for because
00:53:26it's much of an occasion um once you've been there and won with 10 men you've kind of done that so
00:53:33that's kind of in the past old trafford is one that you look forward to because of the
00:53:36the atmosphere the unique atmosphere that's generated when leading out a visit there the
00:53:41away end is always particularly not loud on such a day uh yeah that's probably it i'd like to go to
00:53:52bournemouth and and have happier memories i'd like to generate happy memories of bournemouth because
00:53:57bournemouth seems like a lovely place but the last time i went to bournemouth it was nothing but sadness and
00:54:02misery and goals conceded and javi gracia being asked have you lost the dressing room in the press
00:54:08conference afterwards um by a national paper journalist uh yeah i'd like to go to bournemouth
00:54:16and by the way just i'd just like to to caveat we're not laughing at the fact that um at gracia's
00:54:23misfortune now we're laughing at what has subsequently become a joke in that javi maybe answered questions quite
00:54:32down uh quite on the nose very you know very straight straight he straight batted pretty much
00:54:39all the questions and a joke since was that you know he may have interpreted that as well no it's
00:54:44it's just down the hallway um i have of course i haven't lost the dressing room um maybe not
00:54:51understanding the terminology of the the english football vernacular um sorry i'll let you continue
00:54:56graham just just protecting ourselves there in my role as you know the hang on
00:55:02fun killer there is a grind that we haven't been to or at least i don't think you've been to it but
00:55:07i certainly haven't been to it in fact very few people have been to it everton oh yeah yeah very true
00:55:19yep i really hope that popey won't get the opportunity to go before leads go there so that
00:55:26i can film him walking up the steps uh and then film his little face as he walks out into the stadium
00:55:31that would be a lovely moment so yeah i'm looking forward to all of those
00:55:36yeah i've completely forgotten about um everton's new stadium um you know fingers crossed that um global
00:55:43tides have not risen too much uh by the time leads are scheduled to play there um because
00:55:51obviously it is right by the river mercy um
00:55:55um what else did i have to ask you oh no it was more to more to the point of um
00:56:01leeds obviously playing man united twice next season i think they stand a real chance of beating them
00:56:06you know the last win was beckford day in 2010 january 3rd i think it was uh the last league win was
00:56:13september 2002 um i mean you know i was just a nipper you still had hair um probably um you know
00:56:22before that before that was was david wetherill's winner in 1997 um when i when i and just to give
00:56:31some context of how long ago that was i wasn't born so you know that's uh yeah i mean it's like
00:56:38winning at old trafford isn't it's not really the it's not really the feather in your cap anymore is
00:56:43it you know it's like everyone does it so um but it would be a nice thing for leads to do
00:56:48i mean i imagine at some point they might have some semblance of a plan
00:56:53at old trafford or or a squad that looks like they they know what the plan is um i'll tell you
00:56:58what this summer is going to be so so much more interesting at ellen road in terms of what they do
00:57:04but of course we'll have many many podcasts to uh to talk about that um yeah i'm just looking back
00:57:11at the the head-to-head history of man united and leeds i i think i might i'm open to being
00:57:16corrected on this i think leeds his last league win at old trafford was uh 1981 so you know you were
00:57:24what just finishing your gcses at that point i had not been born in 90 you are the worst um
00:57:33the worst human alive who's ever lived i was not born in 81 i was born in 1983 uh
00:57:41that's when i was born yeah okay we'll uh we'll take your word for it um
00:57:48don't make me bring my birth certificate to the next podcast and hold it up in front of the screen
00:57:52it's not a canoe situation here i can't actually prove that i was born when i said i was born
00:57:57so sorry is yours written on papyrus hmm very good uh monday you looking forward to monday and the
00:58:04the plinth and the celebrating and the um you know that the atmosphere when they walk out yes and no
00:58:11because i've always thought that celebrating with something tangible that you can hold for promotions
00:58:16just a little bit you know you you either want to go up i think i think the only team that should
00:58:22have a plinth and a trophy or something to commemorate their achievement going up from the championship is
00:58:28the league winners um so while it will be a nice moment collectively i'd still like to see the proper
00:58:36plinth at plymouth on the following saturday yeah but again it'll be nice for everyone at ellen road
00:58:44because obviously you know limited tickets um yeah well there won't be a trophy obviously because
00:58:49because the efl couldn't couldn't give leeds the trophy if they you know in case burnley won their
00:58:55last game 47 nil uh and managed to overtake leeds on on goal difference um what if though what if
00:59:02leeds united managed to get a permanent deal done for man or solomon and had ethan ampadu hoist him
00:59:08instead of a trophy at full time would you accept that now you're going to get let people's
00:59:14imaginations run away with them um you know have you had any indication that that's going to happen
00:59:20before monday no none whatsoever no i'll tell you what i am looking forward to on monday is um
00:59:27potentially the uh the lady in a donnie darko mask who was riding the bonnets of every car that
00:59:33tried to turn up from ellen road onto wesley street all the way up to beeston hill um i've
00:59:38actually got footage of her diving headfirst into an uber driver's passenger door uh passenger side
00:59:43window um in the celebrations uh that didn't make the big edit because you know i'm sure she has a job
00:59:50and um probably wouldn't like to see that back uh if you do know said individual um i'm willing to sell
00:59:56that footage for a lot of money um i'm looking forward to uh to maybe seeing that again or some
01:00:03some description of that outside ellen road um doesn't have to be the same thing uh it doesn't
01:00:08have to be a um a carjacking of sorts um what else am i looking forward to on monday uh i'm looking
01:00:17forward to seeing a competitive game actually because bristol city are going to need to have a bit of
01:00:21momentum and i imagine leeds celebrations um over the first couple of days of this week will maybe
01:00:29bring them down to a level where they are on par with a team who are in the playoffs shall we say
01:00:38yeah um imagine if bristol city went up that would be a hell of a story wouldn't it be great i think
01:00:44it'd be fantastic especially in the context of their season as well you know i think liam manning's a
01:00:49very good coach but you know he's he's obviously suffered immense personal tragedy this season
01:00:53um and yeah if they were able to go up i mean i've seen lots of videos of their fans they've um
01:00:59they've been having a great season um really enjoying following them um and i do quite like
01:01:06it would also be tremendous for leads because that's one team that you think well we'll definitely
01:01:10definitely finish above them next season i mean in famous last words and all that um you look at the
01:01:16playoffs right and you think who of that cohort this would stand a chance in the premier league
01:01:24of staying up next season it's this is a difficult one and i say that as well knowing that leeds united
01:01:30have got to get everything very right they've got to spend a lot of money or at least rather not spend
01:01:35a lot of money commit to a lot of money because it might be that they they aren't able to do all
01:01:40their business in in full transactions they might have to amortize a lot of that um in order to keep
01:01:46it under the headroom but they're going to have to commit to a big spend and they're going to have
01:01:50to get their decisions one million percent right to stand a chance of staying up because that's the
01:01:55only way you can do it it seems unless you're going to do a blsa and take everyone completely by surprise
01:02:01um but you look at the playoff picture and you think
01:02:08who's got a chance of going up and staying up yeah you do um but i tell you what leeds aren't
01:02:15dicking about with the playoffs this year as you know was put once by a chief executive um
01:02:22leeds are going up and that is that is where we we finish this week's episode leeds as a premier
01:02:27league team once again uh they've still got the the admin task of two championship fixtures to play
01:02:33although you know they are going for the title as well um we'll be there to cover it in in fullness
01:02:39um every detail every little tidbit of information that we get from from farc and the players that we
01:02:46speak to in the interim uh and hopefully when we record in two weeks time um we'll be talking about
01:02:53maybe maybe even one week's time maybe uh we'll be talking about the league champions um but yeah
01:02:58thanks for joining us uh on the inside allen road podcast uh once again get your comments in uh let
01:03:04us know what you think um let us know what your favorite moment uh of the uh the promotion day of
01:03:10monday was um and yeah we'll we'll speak to you soon bye for now bye
