Duterte Phenomenon Increases Political Awareness Among Voters; May End Money Politics In North Cotabato!
There was a time when I thought that North Cotabato politics would be all about money and that the politician who has the biggest budget to buy votes would win the elections.
Thanks to the Duterte issue, this may no longer be true anymore.
Following the impeachment of Vice President Sara Duterte and the controversial arrest of Former President Rodrigo Duterte and his detention in The Hague, voters are now eager to listen to the issues during the campaign rallies.
In the last big political events which we staged, starting with the Asenso Cotabato Coalition Proclamation Rally and Tribute to FPRRD on April 13 which drew the biggest crowd in the history of North Cotabato Politics estimated at 60,000, people stayed even under a drizzle and rain showers and listened.
Of course, the Kidapawan City event drew the biggest crowd because of the presence of the son of former Pres. Duterte, Davao City Mayor Sebastian Duterte.
To my great surprise, subsequent rallies that we held in the towns of Midsayap, Pigcawayan and last night in Makilala, were also attended by huge crowds estimated at between 6,000 to 8,000.
This was not an ordinary crowd because people came without any promise of monetary incentives.
They stayed even when it rained and they listened intently reacting to political issues as these were clearly explained to them.
In Makilala last night, for example, people defied their barangay officials who tried to prevent them from attending the rally in the town proper.
They stayed even when there was a slight drizzle.
Reports of people refusing money because of their sympathy for Pres. Duterte and Vice President Sara are steadily coming in giving us hope that money may no longer influence the voters of North Cotabato.
With God's grace, if I should win the elections, we will usher back the traditional clean campaigning where elections would be won by explaining the issues and presenting programs and not through money and intimidation.
There is hope for North Cotabato politics, after all.
