00:00This is Pancake.
00:02Hi, Pancake.
00:03Infamous Pancake.
00:06Amy, you sounded great with Preston and Steve the other day, by the way.
00:09All right, here we go.
00:10It is 93.3 WMMR in Philadelphia.
00:13I'm Pierre Robert, joined by Jackson.
00:15Hello, Jackson.
00:16Hey there.
00:17Good to see you.
00:18And we are joined by two incredible women with stunning vocal talent and musical abilities.
00:23They also happen to front two incredibly cool and really talented bands,
00:27both of which are longtime friends of this radio station,
00:30both of which have played our MMRBQ festivals over the years,
00:34and both of which happen to be touring later together this year.
00:38One of these groups has a brand new record out called The Bitter Truth,
00:41and that would be Evanescence.
00:43And sharing the stage with them on this highly anticipated tour
00:46is another of our faves, none other than Hailstorm.
00:50This is going to be an amazing musical gathering.
00:53We're so blessed it's coming our way.
00:54The tour opens in November in Portland, and by December 17th,
00:58we'll play Camden, New Jersey.
01:00And tickets can be found at LiveNation.com.
01:03We are thrilled to welcome Amy Lee of Evanescence and Lizzie Hale of Hailstorm.
01:08Good day, ladies.
01:09Hi.
01:10So nice to have you.
01:12So good to be with you here.
01:13It's just great to have you.
01:14How long have you guys known each other?
01:17First of all, where did you meet?
01:19We first met officially in 2012.
01:21We got the opportunity to finally tour with each other.
01:24And yeah, from the first day, like we met and we're like, wait,
01:28have we just known each other our whole lives?
01:29This is crazy.
01:30So yeah.
01:31We're just my best friends.
01:32I like guacamole.
01:34Main page.
01:35And how did the idea for this tour then come about?
01:38Um, I feel like it's been rolling around in our heads for years and years, but it's like,
01:44yeah, as, as you know, you know, we're busy ladies and, um, time does fly.
01:49And then, uh, and then all of a sudden, you know, the world locked down and, uh, and this
01:55started coming up again.
01:56We're like, okay, well, we have to do it.
01:58You know, we have, this is, you know, life is too short as we all have.
02:01Want to tour together.
02:02Yeah.
02:03First tour coming out of the box after this whole shutdown thing, being with hailstorm
02:08is just a dream come true for us.
02:09We love hanging out with them.
02:10I love watching them play.
02:13Um, it's just going to be, I'm just really grateful.
02:16I am truly, truly grateful.
02:18I'm, I'm getting like pre emotional thinking about it.
02:21Like it hasn't even started yet.
02:23And I'm like, oh no.
02:24So.
02:25Hold it together, Lizzie.
02:26I know.
02:27I'm holding.
02:28Ten deep breaths.
02:29Ten deep breaths.
02:29Lizzie, I miss you so much.
02:32How are the boys?
02:33They're great.
02:34They're, um, you know, little bro is living his best pandemic life.
02:38Like he just kind of ignored the world and just, is just vibrating somewhere.
02:42Yeah.
02:43And, uh, yeah, the guys have been holding up.
02:44Josh has a fresh human.
02:46He just had a second kid and, uh, yeah, we're all just staying busy and, um, really just
02:53looking forward to getting back out and playing live music and seeing you guys again.
02:57And it's been so long since you've seen both either of you.
02:59So, so speaking of that, to, to say the last year has been challenging would be an understatement.
03:04Right.
03:06And I've often heard it described this way.
03:08I forget who told me this, but as a touring musician, uh, that you kind of live that 22
03:13hours a day for that two hours on stage.
03:16And, and that's where the high comes and that's where you connect with the audience.
03:19And that is such a huge part, uh, of being an artist.
03:23So my question would be over the last year, how have you filled that void?
03:28Like, what do you do to replace something so essential?
03:34I, I don't know if there's anything that can replace it.
03:36I, I think that is, that is the only, the only place on earth that we feel that feeling,
03:42um, really special.
03:44Uh, but you know, the, the other side of, of what we do that I love, that is why we do
03:50what we do is making music.
03:53Um, and we have been, you know, before pandemic, we, we have been playing a lot of shows over
03:57the past five or six years, um, without a new album of material to play.
04:02And I know that more than anything, what our fans always want is new music.
04:07Um, and it takes a lot of work and it's hard sometimes to like, I have a child too.
04:12I have a six-year-old Jack.
04:13Um, it's hard to kind of like carve out the time and stop the tours and stop the stuff and
04:18really give yourself all the time that it takes to make something truly great.
04:22Um, and this, you know, as, as challenging as this all has been having that forced time
04:29in isolation was really, really good for me creatively.
04:32I just went, okay, that's it.
04:34There's nothing to distract me now.
04:35We're, we're in, we're doing this.
04:37I'm not leaving this room.
04:38I was in this room or at Nick's studio every single day.
04:42Um, just making the best thing we could possibly make because it's never been clearer that
04:46life is short.
04:47You know, we only have so much time.
04:49We don't have any guarantees of anything.
04:51We don't know what's going to happen tomorrow.
04:52When are we ever going to get back to this?
04:53I don't know.
04:54Let's go do what we were born to do.
04:56Make it, make something out of it.
04:57So, um, I don't know.
05:00I, it's not the same, but it definitely has been a wonderful, positive thing in our lives
05:06to keep us going, to have something to look forward to something to work on someplace in
05:11the universe, you know, where we can create a world like that we can control to some degree.
05:17Um, and now we've got the tour to look forward to.
05:19So, um, it's all coming around.
05:20The Nick you refer to as your producer and based in Nashville and you both live in Nashville.
05:26And so one of the things about the pandemic is it's affected every city differently, but
05:31that's such a vibrant city.
05:33We've seen so many cities go to this minimal level.
05:36How has it affected Nashville, uh, from either or both of your observations?
05:41Do you want to go first?
05:42We both are here.
05:44Oh God.
05:44Yeah.
05:45Um, it, you know, it, it, it went up and down, you know, we saw the rollercoaster ride because,
05:49you know, it, it, we would see things clear up and then everyone's like, okay, great.
05:53We can go out again.
05:54And then everybody catches it again.
05:56And then the surges go up.
05:57And so we've just been holed up watching the circus outside.
06:00And, um, yeah, it's like, we've been, uh, going through our own withdrawals as Amy was
06:06pointing out, you know, where it's like you get to a certain point in time during this
06:09whole lockdown and pandemic where it's like, why, man, why do I feel like I just need something?
06:15And it's like, you know, it's the live music or whatever it is in the shows and the normalcy
06:19human contact of all of that, you know?
06:22But, uh, but yeah, like, uh, Jackson, I've been talking about that stuff before where it's
06:26like the guys and I have been joking about, you know, when we were 13 and just starting
06:30the band, at least we had two bowling alley gigs a month, you know, it's like, I would
06:35gladly go back to set me up next to the stale pizza.
06:39You know, nobody even has to listen to me.
06:41I'll just be here.
06:41But, um, but yeah, I don't know.
06:44Nashville has been kind of crazy.
06:45I think we're, we're starting to get a handle on it now.
06:47You know, there's been like, you know, the least amount of cases ever, you know, I think
06:51this month or the past couple of days.
06:52So everyone's getting done.
06:53I'm double vaxxed.
06:54Everyone's getting vaxxed up and we're just ready to get the show on the road, man.
06:58It's just, can't wait.
07:00Well, with that in mind, I would ask both of you what you might say to our listeners.
07:03There's still, you know, 50%, 45% of a country and many younger people who were hesitant to
07:10get vaccinated.
07:12Uh, and the more people that are vaccinated, clearly the more of us can get out and do more
07:17things.
07:17What would you say to encourage each of your fans to go out and get vaccinated?
07:21Cause it's so easy to do now.
07:23I would say this is it.
07:24This is the way back.
07:25If we want everything to like go back to normal and we want to go back to school, we want
07:29to go back to work.
07:30We want to go to concerts and go out to restaurants, all those things.
07:34It's really just as easy as getting two shots in the arm.
07:37It's yeah.
07:38And we're, I have to say also having friends all over the world.
07:42Um, we are very, very lucky that we have access to vaccine.
07:48And there are people in the world that are dying that don't have access to vaccine.
07:51We, we don't need to be like just putting it off.
07:54Let's do this.
07:55Let's, let's accept this gift that we have, that they have developed it so that we can
08:00get back out there and heal the world, man.
08:02Live music.
08:03Let's go.
08:04Exactly.
08:05And, and that's exactly what it is.
08:07It's just, it's two shots in the arm.
08:08It's nothing.
08:09It's, it's no biggie.
08:10Believe me, both Amy and I have lived through it.
08:13We're fine.
08:13And, uh, and like, like, like what you said, don't take it for granted.
08:17You know, we have, uh, you know, amazing technology, amazing doctors that have developed this so
08:21that we can get back to life as usual.
08:24And exactly what you just said.
08:25You want live rock shows.
08:26You want to go back to school.
08:28Do you want to have a social life again?
08:29This is what you got to do.
08:30That's just, that's the long and short of it.
08:33Jackson.
08:34Yep.
08:34I was just, I was daydreaming of, of standing in a crowd, watching a band with a beer.
08:40No, I can't wait.
08:43I mean, as much as I'm looking forward to playing, I'm also looking forward to doing
08:47that.
08:47I want to just watch.
08:48Yeah.
08:49Do you see the, I'm sorry.
08:52Do you guys see the set as, um, uh, an opportunity for both bands to play together or you obviously
08:59will share moments.
08:59For example, there's a great, uh, video of break in the hailstorm song that you guys just
09:05nailed.
09:06It's so stunning.
09:08So beautiful.
09:09Um, but, uh, fans love it when bands get together.
09:12Do you see that happening as part of this tour?
09:14I think so.
09:15We're trying not to like say, cause we haven't planned anything yet, but I mean, like we
09:20totally, we have to, so yeah, well, there'll be some surprises and whether that means it's,
09:26it's a revisit to some things that we've done in the past or something new.
09:29Um, I'm sure that's going to end up happening as, as it, you know, the, the first time that
09:34Amy and I toured together in 2012, um, that was kind of an, you know, on the, you know,
09:41off the cuff on a whim situation to the whole reason that the break-in duet actually started
09:45was, was Amy coming into my dressing room and being like, Hey, I love the harmonies on
09:50this song.
09:51Can I come out and sing of it?
09:52And I'm like, well, yeah, sure.
09:54You know?
09:55And, uh, and so it's, it's just, uh, yeah.
09:58So I, I leave, I leave, uh, I won't give any like hints to anything because we, and, or
10:03I'm not going to say yay or nay to anything, but yeah, things are going to.
10:06You've got to get Amy in the drum circle.
10:08I like it.
10:09I like it.
10:10You know, um, we, I, we have to let you go, but one last thing, Amy, you've talked about
10:15and you even referenced here, your guacamole and if there's guacamole to be had, uh, Jackson
10:22and I would like to be official taste testers, if at all possible to come backstage at the
10:27show and sample any guacamole you'd like to feed us.
10:30We'll bring the Mexican beer.
10:32We got the Negra Modelo.
10:33We got the Dos Equis.
10:34We'll do anything you like, but we both love guacamole.
10:37Thank you very much.
10:38And you are welcome.
10:39And I will make that happen.
10:40It's really, it's usually the biggest competition between me and, uh, one of our engineers
10:45is dusty.
10:46Um, I, we have different, you know, we make it in different ways.
10:50I, I believe in the pure, simple ingredients like fresh garlic and cumin and lime juice,
10:56like nothing weird, no chunky, right?
10:59Well, chunks, but it's really good.
11:01So it's kind of like, you know, you got to see what you like.
11:05Well, they're telling us we've got to let you go.
11:07It's going to be just an amazing show.
11:10I'm so excited about it.
11:11First, that concerts are coming back.
11:13And secondly, of all the, these two amazing bands will be playing together.
11:17Bitter Truth is a new album from Evanescence.
11:19Evanescence joins Hailstorm.
11:21It will be December 17th in Camden.
11:23Tickets at livenation.com.
11:25Amy Lee, Lizzie Hale, on behalf of Jackson and myself and all of us here at MMR, we love
11:30both of you, uh, and your bands and been with you for a long, long time.
11:34And we cannot wait to see you live in concert.
11:36Am I right, Jackson?
11:37That is correct, sir.
11:39All right.
11:39Thank you so much.
11:41See all of you and embrace you for real.
11:43Yeah.
11:44Yeah.
11:44I can't wait to see you guys.
11:46Love you.
11:46All right.
11:47See you soon.
11:48Thanks, fellas.
11:50I can't believe I was that on time.
11:52I'm never that on time.
11:55They always tell me you've got to wrap up.
11:57And I always say, right.
11:58And then I just keep going and going and going.
12:00And then make the person who's producing it, who's, who's annoyed already that I've just
12:04talked over time.
12:05Well, when you, when you said you had to go, I almost went into cardiac arrest.
12:09I was like, Pierre's rapping.
12:11I can hear the guy in the background.
12:13Cause he's already annoyed.
12:14Cause you got to go to the next place, but not annoyed fellas.
12:17Thank you for your time.
12:18Take care.
12:19Thank you for always being so awesome.
12:21Yeah.
12:21Thank you guys.
12:22See you guys.
12:23We'll see you soon.
12:24All right.
12:27Bye pancake.
12:30Bye pancake.
12:31Bye everyone.
12:32See that we have all this extra time.
12:34We could have kept going.
12:35Why did I, why the fuck.
