00:00Hi, welcome to In the Doghouse with Gloria. I am Kristen Herman. This is Gloria, of
00:05course the star of our show, and with us today is Dr. Katina Pingakis. She is from
00:09VCA Knightswood Animal Hospital. And today, because it's August, we are
00:13celebrating Doggist. And Doggist is the month where we celebrate the birthdays of
00:18shelter dogs, because we don't really know when they were born. Gloria is a
00:21shelter dog. We don't know what her birthday is, so we celebrate it in Doggist.
00:25And with any celebration comes treats. Humans, pets, everybody. What are some
00:30great treats that you would say we might even have in our fridge that dogs would
00:34love and can help to celebrate their special day? That's a great question. So
00:38the first thing that I like to mention when we talk about treats for pets, treats
00:42are great, but they shouldn't make up more than 10% of the calories that your dog
00:46has per day. Some really great treats that are low calorie are carrots. My
00:52parents' dog Zoe really loves them because of the crunchiness with with
00:56carrots. And since they're low calorie, there's something that if your dog is
01:01trying to lose a little bit of weight, it's something that you can replace more
01:04fatty treats with. Yeah, absolutely. And easy to find and inexpensive. Absolutely.
01:09And what would you say are some common foods that we may not know are harmful to
01:13our pets that we eat maybe, but that could really hurt these guys? Yeah, grapes and
01:18raisins are a really big one to watch out for. They cause kidney failure actually
01:23in dogs, which is certainly very serious. And grapes and raisins can be sneakily
01:28found in some baked goods like cookies and bread. So make sure that you keep
01:32those away from your dogs at home. That's a really good point because, yeah, you'd think
01:35grapes, fruit, you know, would be great for dogs. Not good. What would you say we should do if pets do get into
01:42something like that? I know there are these great videos online of dogs getting into the trash or,
01:46you know, peeking into your purse, which every dog loves to stick their nose in there.
01:49What should you do if something like that happens? Yeah, so since every toxin or food
01:56that can make disagree with dogs a little bit, it might be a little bit different.
01:59The best thing to do is contact your veterinarian or you can call the ASPCA
02:04poison control line and they can advise you on what to do. Thank you so much for
02:10joining us. It's In the Doghouse with Gloria. Happy Doggest, everybody.
