00:00It's 93.3 WMMR. I am Sarah backstage at MMRBQ 2023 with a band who just got off of the MMRBQ stage.
00:09So here's the deal. Jamie, Jimmy, and James. Am I right?
00:15Okay, can I just call you all Jay? Because I feel like that is, that's a little less confusing.
00:21We'll be comfortable with that. Yeah, we're okay with that.
00:23Does that mean that all of you are named James legally?
00:27No, legally.
00:27You all have the same name?
00:28Legally, I'm Jamie.
00:30Okay.
00:30But you can call me James. That's fine.
00:32Excellent. Well, it's so hard to tell you apart otherwise.
00:35Illegally, I'm Arthur.
00:38I love it. So you just performed on our stage, the MMRBQ stage. It kicked ass.
00:45And I know that you just got off a plane like less than 24 hours ago from the UK, right?
00:50Yeah, yeah. We're pretty crispy.
00:52Yeah. Well, you couldn't tell by watching you live. And we thank you for playing a little earlier in the day.
00:58I know it's not exactly Rockstar time, but we do appreciate it. We hope you had fun.
01:02Anytime is Rockstar time. We absolutely loved it. Just to get to play in front of that crowd that you guys have got set up.
01:09To be part of this whole lineup is just such a thrill for us, honestly.
01:14Well, we're happy to have you.
01:15So we were loving it.
01:16Yeah. The last time you played Philly, I believe it was at Milk Boy?
01:21It was, yeah.
01:22That's right.
01:22Which was earlier this summer. And that is a tiny stage compared to what you just played.
01:28Absolutely. And Jamie, bless him, was suffering with some terrible affliction.
01:33It was like a whole month's worth of touring, like, pouring out of his skin.
01:38So, yeah, that was a very different experience.
01:40It was like that. But you know when Kurt Cobain went on stage at Reading in a wheelchair?
01:45In a wheelchair, yeah.
01:45It was kind of like that, but it was like real life.
01:49It was the exact same thing.
01:51It was crazy. I was so tired and so sick. I probably played the worst show I've ever played in my life in Philly.
01:57So, Redemption, then, is what we're saying.
01:58So, today was the Redemption arc.
02:00There you go. Well, I wasn't at the Milk Boy show, so you could tell me anything you want about it, and I would believe it.
02:04Damn, I should have lied.
02:05You should have lied.
02:06Yeah, that actually was a lie.
02:07No, it was a great show.
02:08It was a great show, dudes.
02:09It was good.
02:10Yeah.
02:10We were only joking.
02:11Do you play a lot of festivals in the UK?
02:15Yeah, we do.
02:15We do like Reading and Leeds and a lot of the rock festivals, 2000 Trees Festival.
02:20There's a few festivals that have eluded us so far, like Glastonbury Festival.
02:23We haven't had the honor to perform at Glastonbury, but yeah, we tend to do the rounds in the UK.
02:28But at the minute, it seems to just be all US.
02:31You know, we're coming over to America and playing and getting involved with these great festivals.
02:37Whenever I talk to bands from the UK, their impression of playing and touring the United States is that there's so much distance
02:44and time between every gig, whereas when you're in the UK, you can kind of zip around a little bit, but there's just so much traveling involved when you're here in the States.
02:54It's really changed our perspective.
02:56Like, we used to get upset when we would drive from Brighton to Glasgow, which is like a six, seven hour drive.
03:03Whereas now we're like, this is nothing compared to what we've done in the States.
03:08You know, it's just such a big landmass.
03:10And you have every terrain available in the world in the US.
03:14And all sorts of weather as well.
03:16Yeah, totally.
03:16All sorts of weather.
03:17It's extreme.
03:18Well, traveling, you know, driving all that distance, you got to pile not only yourselves, but your crew members and all of your equipment into a van or a couple of vans.
03:27I imagine for you, Jamie, that can pose a challenge sometimes with your height.
03:31How tall are you?
03:32Yeah, I'm seven foot tall, so deep vein thrombosis is a constant threat.
03:37Oh.
03:37It's always waiting around the corner.
03:39So, you know, I've got to make sure I stay active.
03:41But it's actually, yeah, it's like, I'm the real one that suffers because I sit behind him and my knee space, my leg space is severely compromised.
03:49He pushes the chair all the way back and you have to make the sacrifice, right?
03:52The pile is out for me, actually.
03:54Exactly.
03:55So at least everyone's suffering.
03:57Right.
03:57Along with the singer.
03:59Yeah, I'm suffering.
04:00And now James is actually only four foot eight.
04:03So, yeah.
04:04Oh, you shrank him?
04:04Yeah, it's really taken its toll.
04:06It's hard times.
04:09Jamie, I know that you got your start performing live by playing in cover bands.
04:13I don't know if the same is true for all of you.
04:16Yeah, a little bit.
04:17Was that just you?
04:17A little bit.
04:18Okay.
04:19Yeah.
04:19I mean, I kind of started by playing in, like, indie bands.
04:22Well, actually, when I was a teenager, I was just a huge metal head.
04:25So when I was in school, it was all, like, thrash metal, you know, Pantera cover bands and all that sort of stuff.
04:31And, yeah, we all had slightly different upbringings in music.
04:34So these guys came from more of an indie angle and I came from a metal angle.
04:37And when we met in Brighton in our early 20s, we kind of just made this decision we were going to be a kind of stonery rock band.
04:45That's where we landed.
04:45That explains the very deep, heavy sound of this new album, which I absolutely love.
04:52It's called The Perfume of Decay.
04:53It came out earlier this summer.
04:55And it's your third, right?
04:56Yes.
04:57So how are the fans reacting to it now that you've got several under your belt?
05:01It seems to be, like, really well received.
05:04And from a lot of the feedback, people are saying that it's our best record.
05:09You know, I think it's, like, the best of the first two records.
05:12You know what I mean?
05:13It's ambitious.
05:15It's really, you know, it was produced and mixed really well.
05:21And it's got, you know, it's got a lot of game and it seems to, you know, translate well at radio.
05:26But also I feel like there's a nice amount of, like, lo-fi and boutique elements in the record that make it not just, like, you know, a big kind of pristine rock record.
05:37It's also got a lot of depth to it, you know, and a lot of, like, rough edges.
05:40So, for me, it feels like the best, yeah, balance between the first two records.
05:46And that seems to be, yeah, like, from a lot of what people, you know, a lot of feedback that we get from people, our fans seem to think the same as well, which is really great.
05:54Excellent. We've been playing the title track, The Perfume of Decay, on MMR, one of my favorites on the album.
06:01But another one that I really like is Play My Favorite Song, which you played today as well on the MMR-BQ stage.
06:07And I like it for very basic reasons, which is it's a great radio song.
06:12Radio loves any song that mentions playing a song or turning up the volume or favorite things or turning things up.
06:20So, that was smart, yeah, for writing that song. Absolutely.
06:24Yeah, Willie, that's the first one from the new record we kind of, we were taking out live.
06:28Before the record was out, we would sort of, we'd try different ones live.
06:31And, yeah, that's one that we've always really enjoyed playing.
06:34It's like, gets our shoulders back. It's a fun, it's a fun one for the crowd and us, you know.
06:40Hypes you up. Awesome.
06:42So, your set's over. We've still got a lot of MMR-BQ to go.
06:45We've got Shinedown, Billy Idol, several other bands on the bill.
06:48Are you going to stick around and watch any of them?
06:49Yeah, we're going to toast it tonight, I think.
06:51We're going to get in the bin.
06:52Saturday night, you know.
06:54Yeah, get in the bin.
06:55Get in the bin.
06:56Make tomorrow really difficult for ourselves. Why not?
06:59We're going to make the first date of our headline tour tomorrow very difficult for ourselves.
07:04You're right.
07:06It seems like you're up for the challenge, though.
07:08Yeah, yeah. It's not our first Rodeo.
07:11No, it could be our last.
07:12It's ruining our...
07:13Well, thank you once again for coming all the way from the UK to play our MMR-BQ,
07:18and I hope that it's not too long before we see you back here again.
07:21Massive props, everyone.
07:22Thanks for having us.
07:23Jamie, James, Jimmy, give it up for Tiger Cup!
07:26Hey!
07:27Oh, mercy.
