We went out into Manchester to ask people on the street about Easter and where it ranks amongst other holidays that are celebrated here in the UK.
Transcript
00:00Hello and welcome to Manchester World. My name is Theo Hewson-Bett and today I'm out on the streets of Manchester on, unfortunately, what is a pretty rainy day, asking people about Easter.
00:09And that's because the weekend just gone was the Easter holiday. It's a brilliant day. Everyone celebrates all the time.
00:15We get the Friday off and the Monday off work. Well, most people do anyway.
00:19And so it can really come together to be one of the best weeks of the year.
00:22But how does it compare to other holidays? That's the question that we want answering today.
00:26Between Christmas, Halloween, even Valentine's Day, there are lots of great options.
00:30They'll mean different things to different people.
00:32So again, we're going to ask what people's favourite holiday of the year is.
00:36Bad. Loud. It's not the best.
00:40Christmas top, Easter second. Yeah. Yeah.
00:44I don't mind eating chocolate. I can't beat that. You've got the holiday bank holiday.
00:48Yeah. Bank holiday is lovely. That's the main thing, really.
00:52Yeah, I think a bit selfishly. I like being gifted presents. So that's what it is. Fair enough.
00:56You know what, mate? Actually, I can pinpoint exactly where Easter stopped being fun for me.
01:01So my mum actually used to work at an old people's home, right?
01:04I'll tell you what it was. It was Halloween, OK?
01:07And Halloween, all the members of the old people's home, they had to make Halloween's mask.
01:12One of the members of the old people's home, they were a bit far gone, ended up making an Easter mask on Halloween.
01:19And that was enough for me. That was enough for me. I think I was nine years old.
01:23And that's when it all started with Easter for me, mate.
01:26I'm going to go to church on a Sunday. Nice.
01:29I'm going to go to mass in the morning. And my family work in the NHS, so none of them are about.
01:35So I'll be flying solo, man. No tradition.
01:38I think I grew up as a Catholic, so my parents value Easter quite highly.
01:42Even though I don't associate as Catholic nowadays, it's still very important, isn't it?
01:47Christmas. Christmas, isn't it? Yeah, Christmas.
01:49It's got to be. You know, it's a time of joy. It's a time for cheer.
01:52Absolutely. That's great. Yeah, big dinners, seeing family.
01:55Seeing family that we don't see so often.
01:57Thanks for doing Easter egg hunts. I think we're just too good at it at this point.
02:00No, you say that, mate.
02:02Yeah, Lucy does an Easter egg hunt still. Yeah, Lucy does an Easter egg hunt as well.
02:04Yeah, they go mad for an Easter egg. Yeah, but I'm not bothered.
02:07I'm not really religious, though, so I think that's probably what killed it.
02:10I mean, Ann used to do stuff, but...
02:12Kind of died of her, really, didn't it?
02:14It's OK.
02:15Now, I do think that as I get older, Easter does sort of take a little advantage
02:19from this bank holiday weekend. I'm going to ignore the fact that I've worked
02:22both the Friday and the Monday this year. That was my own doing.
02:25But having that long weekend really does almost take you back to being a kid
02:28and feeling like you've got an extended period of time.
02:30But no real surprise to know that Christmas came first for a lot of people.
02:34It's a time of giving. It's famously the time of year where you get a lot of presents
02:37and people act more generously to their fellow human beings.
02:41So, that's all for now. Thank you very much for watching.
02:43And let us know, please tell us, what's your favourite holiday and why?
02:47We haven't had much on Halloween so far, so when it comes to October,
02:51we'll do another little focus on that. That's all for now.
02:53Follow Manchester World for more. See you soon.
