00:00Plastic is everywhere, including where you can't see.
00:04Advancements in technology have helped scientists to discover microplastics within the last decade,
00:09which has environmentalists raising the alarm.
00:12They're really, really small plastics. They're in beauty projects.
00:15They're also, most of our clothes are made from plastic.
00:18Microplastics often end up in water systems when they get washed out of items,
00:23which can harm oceans and aquatic life.
00:25And our wastewater treatment systems are not designed to actually remove those.
00:30While some households may have water filters, microplastics could still be hanging around.
00:36Because we can filter it out doesn't actually mean we're removing it.
00:41Over time, microplastics can get smaller and smaller,
00:44making it necessary to frequently clean out faucet filters.
00:48You would probably have to unscrew it, get rid of the microplastics,
00:54wash it out, put it back on.
00:56Various foods also carry microplastics, making it very common to end up in human bodies.
01:02They can get beyond the blood-brain barrier.
01:04Even healthy diets are likely not safe from the tiny plastics
01:08because it is often found in materials to help crops grow.
01:12While scientists have yet to prove if microplastics alone cause health concerns,
01:18they could potentially be carriers to other dangerous materials.
01:21Microplastics, by nature of sort of their chemistry,
01:25combine contaminants, metals, PFAs, and carry them and move them.
01:31Staying away from plastic products and using natural materials
01:34are recommended ways to reduce your microplastic use on a daily basis.
