00:00Today, Rupert changes an old man's face in Rupert and the Unusual Portrait.
00:30There's a million stories to be told, all the things that he's done, and he's gonna share them all with you, so come along.
00:43Rupert, Rupert the Bell, everyone sing his name. Rupert, Rupert the Bell, everyone come and join.
00:57Rupert, Rupert, Rupert is wondering what to do.
01:08All my friends have gone to the museum. I went yesterday with Daddy, so I don't want to go again today.
01:15What shall I do, Mummy? Have you an errand I could do?
01:19No, I don't think I have. I know. Why don't you go down to the village and see the antique shop that's just opened?
01:26They say that Sailor Sam's brother Joe is running it.
01:30What's an antique shop? Well, it's really a shop that sells old furniture.
01:37Antique means old. Some old stuff is valuable.
01:41I must go and see this. Perhaps we've got some old stuff that's valuable. Bye!
01:47There's not much hope of that, Rupert. Be careful in the shop.
01:52Rupert finds the antique shop in the high street and takes a look in the window.
01:58Why, there's Sailor Sam. He must be visiting his brother Joe. I'll go in and perhaps you'll show me round.
02:05Why, hello, Rupert. I didn't know you were interested in antiques.
02:11I'm not really, Sam. I don't know anything about antique things.
02:16Well, I'm looking after the shop for Joe. He's away buying more stock. So as I'm not busy, I'll show you round.
02:23Sam shows Rupert many old and valuable items. Some are hundreds of years old, he says.
02:30Rupert stops in front of a painting of an old man.
02:33Oh, that's not old, Rupert. It came with a lot of other stuff that Joe bought yesterday. Not worth much.
02:40Oh, excuse me, Rupert. Must be a customer.
02:44Rupert can't take his eyes off the painting. The old man seems to be staring straight at him.
02:51And a noise fills his head as the picture seems to move right up to him.
02:57Or has he gone up to the picture?
03:00Suddenly, Rupert finds himself in the grounds of a grand house.
03:05Wizardy whiz! Where am I now?
03:09What are you doing here?
03:11Rupert turns in surprise to see a rough-looking man staring at him.
03:15Oh, um, well, I don't know.
03:18Well, I'm the guard around here, and you're trespassing.
03:21So you'd better come along with me and see the master. He don't like trespassers.
03:26Well, I can explain.
03:31Fourteen thousand, and that's only in one box. Now, where...
03:35Who's that?
03:37I've caught a trespasser in the grounds, sir. Shall I punish him?
03:41Rupert stares in amazement. For the old man is the one in the picture in the antique shop.
03:49I've seen you before.
03:51I dare say you have, but I haven't seen you before, and I don't want to see you again.
03:56Now, just you get back to the village, and don't come here snooping any more, or I shall have to talk to your father.
04:01He must live in one of my houses.
04:03But, sir, that's enough.
04:05Noakes, take him to the gates and send him back to the village.
04:09And you can tell your friends to keep away too. I know you're all after my money.
04:13After being turned out of the big house by the guard, Rupert sets off to find the village of which the old man had spoken.
04:23Oh, there's a house. Perhaps someone can tell me where I am.
04:27At the gate of the little house stand two children. Clean, but very poorly dressed.
04:33Hello, my name's Rupert. Can you tell me where I am? I'm lost.
04:39My name's Jimmy, and this is my sister Jane. You've just come to the village called Miserton.
04:46Mummy, this is Rupert. He doesn't know where he is.
04:51Oh, I wouldn't stop here if I were you, Rupert. All the land and houses are owned by an old miser up at the big house, and he doesn't like strangers.
04:59My daddy works for him.
05:02The old miser doesn't pay much money, and he keeps us all poor.
05:06Well, my daddy doesn't work for him, so I can say what I like. I'm going back to talk to him.
05:12I know he has lots of money because I've seen it. You be careful, Rupert. He's a mean old man.
05:18Rupert returns to the big house and creeps up quietly, then waits till he sees the guard go out.
05:30Through a window, he sees the old miser still counting his money.
05:34Who's that? Who's there? You won't get any of my money. Go away. Go away.
05:39Oh, you are funny. I haven't come after your money. I've come to tell you about some children who are your neighbours down the road.
05:47Go away. I don't want to know about neighbours. I only want to know about money.
05:53Rupert tries to tell the old man all about the poor family and the rest of the village, but he turns away.
05:59I don't want to know. Go away. Go away.
06:03Jimmy and Jane are having a picnic in the woods. They've put their basket near a log and they're playing hide-and-seek.
06:11Hello, Jimmy. What are you doing? We're playing hide-and-seek. Would you like to play?
06:17Rupert's feeling a little sad after his meeting with the old miser, and he tells Jimmy all about it.
06:23Oh, don't be sad, Rupert. You did try. We've never seen him because he stays up at the house.
06:30Yes, come on, Rupert. I know. Let's play hopscotch.
06:36All right. Let's mark some squares.
06:39The old miser has quietly followed Rupert and is now hiding behind a tree watching the game.
06:46And he hears them talking. If you saw him, you'd think he was a kind old man.
06:52At least he looks kind. But he sits all day counting his money.
06:56Well, I'm sorry for him. He can't enjoy things much. I wonder if he's ever been on a picnic.
07:03I know, Jimmy. Let's pick some wildflowers to take home to Mummy.
07:08Yes, let's. Come on. I'll wait here with the basket.
07:13So, your name is Rupert Bear.
07:17Oh! Oh, you did make me jump. Yes, sir. That's my name.
07:22Well, Rupert, you made me think a bit when you visited my house.
07:27Do the villagers really dislike me? After all, I do give them work and houses to live in.
07:34These two children, sir, don't know who you are. And I'll keep your secret for a little while.
07:40They live in one of your cottages and their father works for you.
07:44See what they think of the old man up at the big house.
07:48Shhh! Here they come.
07:50Look, Rupert. We've got some lovely ones.
07:54Isn't it a pretty bunch?
07:56Yes, your mother will be pleased. This gentleman is on his way to the village and he's resting.
08:03Oh, then he must share our picnic with us, mustn't he, Jane?
08:07Yes, and Rupert too. I'll get the bread out.
08:12Jane gets some pieces of bread out of the basket and offers a piece to the old man.
08:17He leans over and looks into the bag.
08:21Dry bread? Is that all you have for a picnic?
08:25Oh, I'm very sorry, sir. But that's all we ever have.
08:29You see, our father works for the old man up at the big house.
08:33He doesn't pay much money. Daddy says he's a miser.
08:37Rupert hides a smile behind his hand. He finds it hard not to chuckle.
08:42But you're very welcome to some, sir. And a cup of water from our bottle.
08:47Water? Bread and water on a picnic?
08:50It won't always be like that, will it, sir? Says Rupert knowingly.
08:56And the old man replies slowly.
08:59No, Rupert Bear. Things are going to change around here.
09:05Now, you two children run along home and tell your mother to expect a visitor this afternoon.
09:13Yes, sir. Goodbye. And would you like to take these flowers home with you?
09:18Oh, I couldn't take those. I heard you say they were for your mummy.
09:22Oh, we can pick some more on the way home. Jane wants you to have them because you look so kind.
09:28Not like that old miser in the big house. Goodbye, Rupert.
09:35Well, Rupert, you've made me very happy.
09:39If you hadn't come along, I would carry on being the old miser in the big house.
09:45But now, I'll make those changes.
09:49Another satisfied customer.
09:52Rupert. Oh, hello. Still looking at that old man.
09:56I must say, he looks a lot happier all of a sudden.
10:00Rupert is so excited.
10:03He can't eat his tea until he's told his mummy about his adventure and the old man.
10:08Well, well, Rupert.
10:11Now, have some cake, dear.
10:14Aren't you glad that your daddy doesn't work for an old miser?
10:18Rupert, Rupert the Bell, everyone's in his name.
10:39Rupert, Rupert the Bell, everyone come and join.
10:47In all of his name.
10:50Rupert. Rupert. Rupert the Bell, everyone come and join.
10:57In all of his name.
10:59Rupert.
11:00Rupert.
