00:01:01time and not fall into that state of overwhelm oh I know because I've been there and right
00:01:09now you got a lot of things to do today but the problem is it's all in your mind it's all
00:01:16in your brain because how can you hit a target that you can't see how can you make a basket
00:01:25on a goal that you don't have we want massive production and not just busy work yeah you
00:01:34know the things that you need to do but you don't have it mapped out your internal GPS is
00:01:42not set your internal GPS is not locked in and that sets you up to not be very productive today
00:01:51focus on being productive instead of just busy because you can do a whole lot of stuff in a day

00:02:34don't need more time in your day you need to decide you need to make a decision you need to have a well
00:02:42thought out plan you're born with a gift if not that then you get good at something along the way and
00:02:54what you're good at you don't take for granted you don't betray it what if you do betray your gift
00:03:01then you betray yourself for far too long you've been holding yourself back

00:03:51if you never took a chance you never believed in yourself you never had faith
00:03:54we need faith you need to believe in yourself and it doesn't matter how many times you've failed
00:03:58what matters is you keep getting up every day and trying again and that's what really is important of knowing that

00:05:48but you know what's scarier?
00:05:51it's when you allow fear to stop you from growing

00:11:08that's gotta be a desire
00:11:09that's gotta be something within you that burns
00:11:12hunger is your internal security guard

00:12:02but we all know that quitting is not an option
00:12:05if you feel
00:12:08in your heart
00:12:09that you deserve this opportunity
00:12:12then let it resonate
00:12:14through your veins
00:12:16let it flow

00:12:58if you want your future
00:13:01if you wanna fulfill your destiny
00:13:04then you have to stay hungry
00:13:06the problem with you is you got satisfied
00:13:09you got satisfied with what you accomplished
00:13:11you got satisfied with what you did in the past
00:13:14if you want your future
00:13:17then you are going to have to get acquainted
00:13:20with pain
00:13:22with discomfort
00:13:23with inconvenience
00:13:24with inconvenience
00:13:26because hunger is the only thing that's going to give you the power
00:13:30to persevere
00:13:31through that pain
00:13:33never stop climbing the hill
00:13:35there is always another hill to climb

00:14:19won't get you across that finish line
00:14:22understand that you got to be the one that won it the most
00:14:26if you got up this morning
00:14:29when you are running your race
00:14:32then be committed to your race
00:14:34do not be committed to excuses
00:14:37do not be committed to fear
00:14:40do not be committed to those that may oppose you
00:14:44be committed to crossing that finish line
00:14:48be committed to being a champion
00:14:51be committed to being a warrior
00:14:54be committed to keeping your eyes focused on the prize
00:14:58you don't have any limitations
00:15:00you don't have any boundaries
00:15:01your past is your past
00:15:03and I told you before
00:15:05you wanna go talk about the past
00:15:07I can go pound for pound with you
00:15:09I was a high school dropout
00:15:11you wanna talk about the past?
00:15:13we can talk about the past
00:15:15but my past ain't got nothing to do with my present
00:15:17this is the only opportunity I got
00:15:19and I gotta lose myself
00:15:21every single day I gotta lose myself in this moment
00:15:24when you are hungry
00:15:27you are creative
00:15:28when you are hungry
00:15:30you are innovative
00:15:32when you are hungry
00:15:34when you are no longer full
00:15:36when you are no longer satisfied
00:15:38with where you are and you raise your standards
00:15:41it is only then
00:15:43that you can have your future
00:15:46if you can stay hungry
00:15:48you can get the resources
00:15:50if you can stay hungry
00:15:52you can get the strategy
00:15:54if you can stay hungry
00:15:55if you don't come
00:15:56if you can stay hungry
00:15:58the connections will be aligned
00:15:59if you can stay hungry
00:16:01the problem with many of you
00:16:03is that you got full
00:16:05you got complacent
00:16:07you got lazy
00:16:09somewhere along the line
00:16:11you lost your enthusiasm
00:16:13your optimism
00:16:15you lost
00:16:17your hunger
00:16:19I'm never full
00:16:21I'm never full
00:16:23I'm never full
00:16:25I'm never full
00:16:27I have too much to accomplish
00:16:29to be satisfied with where I am right now
00:16:31I have too much on the line
00:16:33I have too many people depending on me
00:16:35to win
00:16:37I must stay hungry
00:16:39you have what it takes mentally
00:16:41you have what it takes physically
00:16:43you got the heart
00:16:45you got everything it takes to make it happen
00:16:47so you gotta stop waiting for circumstances
00:16:49you gotta stop waiting for situations
00:16:50you gotta catch this last one
00:16:53don't quit on you
00:16:58don't quit on this opportunity
00:17:01don't quit on your success
00:17:03don't quit
00:17:05on being the best
00:17:07of yourself
00:17:08reading is the strongest
00:17:16signal for success in the future that I've ever seen
00:17:20it is the strongest strongest strongest
00:17:23I got my first job in radio
00:17:25when I was 16 years old
00:17:27because I was a great reader
00:17:29have you ever met a person who was a great reader when they were young who was not successful?
00:17:33never, never, it is the absolute best foundation ever in life
00:17:39I was always sort of really interested in reading when I was a kid
00:17:43and I read everything that I could get my hands on
00:17:46I read the encyclopedia
00:17:48I read every night
00:17:50um, age 9 or 10
00:17:53ok
00:17:55well, not that I actually wanted to read the encyclopedia
00:17:57but I ran out of things to read
00:17:59so in desperation I read the encyclopedia
00:18:01there's a reason why
00:18:04we have the technology that we do
00:18:06at least in part
00:18:08because fans of science fiction
00:18:11have been influenced by those ideas
00:18:13and have taken those ideas
00:18:15and put them into practice
00:18:17in the world
00:18:19that which we focus our imaginations on
00:18:22is what we manifest
00:18:23in this realm
00:18:25that's the secret
00:18:27that's the deal
00:18:30the thing about a book that you can't get from a discussion
00:18:33is that a book is
00:18:35a book is like a portrait
00:18:36as opposed to a photograph
00:18:38you know, a photograph, it's click
00:18:40that's that
00:18:42a portrait you layer on and layer on and layer on
00:18:45and work over on for weeks
00:18:46you still have the same single image
00:18:48but there's this depth to it
00:18:49a book
00:18:50enables you to think
00:18:51and then rethink
00:18:52and think and then rethink
00:18:53and so
00:18:54you can go deeper in a book
00:18:55than you can
00:18:56I would say in any other media
00:19:01the power of science fiction literature
00:19:04and its connection to the what if
00:19:05is it actually inspires us
00:19:07it invites us
00:19:09to create the world
00:19:11as a reflection of
00:19:13of what we can
00:19:15imagine
00:19:19of what we can do
00:19:22so given the truth that you never have control
00:19:25you never had it
00:19:26how can you eliminate stress
00:19:27and cultivate resilience
00:19:29well I want to share some concepts with you
00:19:31concept number one is
00:19:33mental chatter
00:19:35which is the internal monologue
00:19:37that you have going on in your head
00:19:39all the time
00:19:40it begins when you get up in the morning
00:19:42is with you right through the day
00:19:43is with you now
00:19:45but in the short time I've been speaking
00:19:46how many of you have already gone someplace else
00:19:49what am I going to have for lunch
00:19:50who do I have to call
00:19:52right?
00:19:53I rest my case
00:19:55all of that is mental chatter
00:19:56and I invite you to think of it
00:19:57whatever situation you are in
00:19:59your mental chatter about that situation
00:20:02makes it an order of magnitude worse
00:20:05then we have mental models
00:20:07and a mental model is a notion you have
00:20:09that this is the way the world works
00:20:11but this is not the way the world works
00:20:13it's your model of this is the way the world works
00:20:17and the more you believe in your model
00:20:19of this is the way the world works
00:20:20the more evidence you seem to get
00:20:22that this in fact is the way the world works
00:20:25and very soon you've built
00:20:27a silo around yourself
00:20:29that's so thick you can't break out of it
00:20:34your mental chatter
00:20:36the mental chatter that you entertain
00:20:37and the mental models that you hold
00:20:40dictate your life
00:20:41that you're all living in a matrix
00:20:44if any of you have seen the movie
00:20:46the original matrix
00:20:47we're all living in a matrix
00:20:49the only difference is
00:20:50this was not constructed
00:20:51by an alien civilization
00:20:53out to get you
00:20:54you constructed it
00:20:56with your mental models
00:20:57and your mental chatter
00:20:59but the more important point is
00:21:01it really doesn't matter
00:21:03you have the choice of determining
00:21:05what is the emotional domain you occupy
00:21:07in all likelihood you did not even recognize
00:21:11that you had a choice
00:21:14and you exercised that choice
00:21:17but now that I'm pointing it out to you explicitly
00:21:20do you recognize that?
00:21:22you had a choice and you chose to exercise that choice
00:21:25and you never even recognize that you actually exercised a choice
00:21:29the reason you exercised the choice you did is because of the mental chatter you entertain and the mental models you hold
00:21:40that's how important these constructs are
00:21:43I will go further
00:21:46every time you have a situation in your life that you find unpleasant and it persists
00:21:53not some of the time not most of the time
00:21:55every time
00:21:57you have a situation in your life
00:21:59you find it unpleasant and it persists
00:22:02you are using one or more mental models that are not serving you well
00:22:06and when you start making changes in those mental models you will be astonished how quickly the situation will resolve itself
00:22:18we spend too much of our emotional energy on the 2, 3 or 4 things that we think are wrong in our lives
00:22:28and we entirely ignore the 30, 40, 50, 200 things which are pretty darn good
00:22:36in our lives
00:22:39we have an unfortunate habit of sticking labels on things
00:22:43any event that happens in our head we immediately decide this is good or this is bad
00:22:51it does a tremendous amount of damage to us
00:23:00can you think of anything that happened in your life that at the time it happened you thought this is terrible
00:23:05but you can now look back upon it and say gee that was actually pretty good
00:23:10so if something happened to you in the past that at the time it happened you thought was terrible but you can now look back and say it was actually pretty good
00:23:18why are you in a hurry to label anything that happens now bad?
00:23:23is there any possible way in which in X years it could turn out to be pretty good?
00:23:31just pausing to consider that question will take you to a different emotional domain
00:23:36and if you then take the next step and say
00:23:40is there anything I can do to make that happen?
00:23:43you move into a realm of possibility
00:23:45and courses of action will open up to you that you never would have considered before
00:23:56how do I figure out my purpose in life?
00:23:59you start by asking the question why am I here?
00:24:02I'm not talking about in the office or in that organization or in that country but here on the planet
00:24:08and that's the only way there is to start
00:24:14it may be an incomplete answer
00:24:16maybe a half-baked answer
00:24:19but that is much superior to I don't know and I don't want to question it
00:24:23you know it's often attributed to Mark Twain the quote that the two most important days in your life
00:24:30from the day you're born and the day you discover why you're here
00:24:33what differentiates the best leader?
00:24:36and it has something to do with this spirit passion
00:24:40for something they hold deeply and consciously at bay
00:24:44who they are and why are they in the world becomes very important to them
00:24:48and they're able to bring out those characteristics in others
00:24:53that consciousness in others
00:24:55they don't do it by controlling or by manipulation
00:24:58that can be done, it can be done for a short term
00:25:01but it's not a long term measure
00:25:03but they actually help people in the discovery
00:25:06if they're not already awake to who they are
00:25:08they help them become awake to why they're in this business or organization
00:25:13and together they start to move aggressively towards a vision
00:25:18that's what differentiates teams and that's where work spirit comes into play
00:25:23that spirit of purpose
00:25:26and it's enunciated, they know what it is and they speak directly to it
00:25:31there's power in knowing who you are
00:25:35there's not much power in being a zombie
00:25:37and just walking through the world and saying
00:25:39well a lot of people do it and they do stuff and they say
00:25:42I don't think that's it
00:25:44well what do you think it is?
00:25:46people that get down and out about the organization
00:25:49or wherever they find themselves and their family
00:25:52so not being snippet with it
00:25:55but why do you stay?
00:25:57and really looking for the answer
00:25:59and then following that answer up
00:26:01and what would happen if you left?
00:26:03what would happen if you stayed?
00:26:05what would happen if you changed?
00:26:06it's up to them to pull themselves out of the victimhood
00:26:10it's hard to see from a victim standpoint
00:26:13the aspect that everything's a choice
00:26:16and I move ahead with everything's a choice
00:26:20existentialism that it is a choice
00:26:22and how you feel about it and what you do about it
00:26:25doesn't mean there aren't barriers around you
00:26:28doesn't mean the world doesn't want to guide you to a certain end point
00:26:31but you are in the driver's seat of your life
00:26:33and so what does it mean?
00:26:37after a lifetime of working with groups at the highest level of leadership and strategy
00:26:44what would you have wanted to teach yourself as a 20 year old Steven?
00:26:48things I would tell a 20 year old
00:26:50be appreciative that you've learned how to manage yourself
00:26:52then move towards leading yourself
00:26:55and leading yourself is understanding and starting to do the deep inquiry that you'll do for life
00:27:01why am I here on earth?
00:27:03for what purpose?
00:27:04and then to establish a vision
00:27:06where do I want to be?
00:27:08what do I want to be doing?
00:27:10being with? learned?
00:27:12and then what values do I want to operate within?
00:27:15so it's really developing that vision value and purpose for myself
00:27:21and then once I have that
00:27:25then I'd say that the last step is start to identify people that I align with on purpose at different levels
00:27:33and start to move with them into the world
00:27:35if you took the leaders in the past that would be some
00:27:41a lion leader would be something like a MacArthur in the Pacific
00:27:46General MacArthur
00:27:47it's all about me
00:27:49most people can't name a general that was under MacArthur's command
00:27:53but if you go to Eisenhower
00:27:55in World War II in the West
00:27:58we know about Bradley
00:27:59we know about Patton
00:28:00we know about a bunch of them
00:28:01why?
00:28:02because he was a leader of a wild dog pack
00:28:06drawing together both the Brits and the Americans
00:28:09all these different personalities to do what?
00:28:11a single focus
00:28:13defeat Nazism
00:28:17wild dogs are unique
00:28:19that issue of we have a shared vision
00:28:21and the vision
00:28:23I don't trump the vision
00:28:24it's not about me
00:28:26it's about what we have set our collective mind to
00:28:31and I'll do anything as your leader
00:28:33to make that happen with you
00:28:35and perseverance tenacity
00:28:37I refuse to give up
00:28:39because it really isn't
00:28:41there's not another option
00:28:43if it does it's not another
00:28:45this is what I've chosen
00:28:47why do I give up my life purpose?
00:28:49I just don't go to Walmart and shop for another one
00:28:52this is what I'm here for
00:28:54so do or die
00:28:55and it's not a gloomy thing
00:28:57I'm just going to make it happen
00:29:03often times people go
00:29:05ok here's really what I want to do
00:29:06and this is what I'm trying to accomplish
00:29:08and then
00:29:10they see all these other things
00:29:12that other people are doing
00:29:13and then they kind of see that as like a grab bag
00:29:15they're like I want a little of this
00:29:16and a little of this
00:29:17and a little of this
00:29:18and I want it all at the same time
00:29:20and that's not really possible
00:29:22you know?
00:29:23you can't play five sports at the same time
00:29:25you've got to pick one
00:29:26you've got to specialize
00:29:27maybe you can do two
00:29:28but you probably can't do five
00:29:29right?
00:29:30you can't be a classical musician
00:29:32and a rock star
00:29:34you know
00:29:35and this and this all at the same time
00:29:37so it's about sort of picking your lane
00:29:39and then knowing that
00:29:41some goals are mutually exclusive
00:29:45uncertainty is scary
00:29:47new information is scary
00:29:48change is scary
00:29:49and everyone has a different way of handling that
00:29:52I will pivot when necessary
00:29:53I'm like oh no
00:29:54dead end
00:29:55woo!
00:29:56you know do what you got to do
00:29:57and I will
00:29:58I can take new information
00:29:59and adjust the plan immediately
00:30:00and have no qualms about it
00:30:01and just move move move
00:30:03and the way to balance that
00:30:04is that outside of work
00:30:06I really like things to be stable
00:30:09you need to have that pull
00:30:10that you can go back to
00:30:11when everything looks crazy
00:30:12that you can reach out to
00:30:13to hold on to
00:30:14and if I didn't have that
00:30:15I think I'd be much more afraid of chaos
00:30:21and when someone actually asks
00:30:24and kind of owns that
00:30:25like when they say
00:30:26do I want to make an impact
00:30:27and the answer is yes
00:30:28and they own it
00:30:30they realize they're going to have to develop
00:30:33they can no longer leave their growth to
00:30:36you know to randomness
00:30:38because if they do they'll always be mediocre
00:30:40and they realize
00:30:42I've got to become something
00:30:43entirely above both of those
00:30:46that's what most people don't see
00:30:47they're like
00:30:48it's
00:30:49we've made this binary
00:30:50false conversation
00:30:51right
00:30:52it's a
00:30:53it's
00:30:54it's not a true
00:30:55sort of choice here
00:30:56it's a false dichotomy
00:30:57we call it right
00:30:58it's not strengths
00:30:59or weaknesses
00:31:00many of you
00:31:01if you have a big dream
00:31:02a huge goal
00:31:03you've got to become something
00:31:04entirely above and beyond
00:31:06any strengths you even know about
00:31:08feel or own
00:31:09or own
00:31:10and go way beyond any weaknesses
00:31:11you've ever even addressed
00:31:12or even you know about
00:31:13because you're going to discover
00:31:14so many new strengths
00:31:15and so many new weaknesses
00:31:16on the path
00:31:17that it's almost irrelevant
00:31:19what they are now
00:31:20it's what's the goal
00:31:21and build into that
00:31:27what am I good at?
00:31:28what do I love?
00:31:29what does the world need?
00:31:31and how do I get paid for it?
00:31:32to me those four help you unlock your passion
00:31:35when you find the intersect across all of those four
00:31:38you're making your passion your purpose
00:31:40you'll unlock your passion
00:31:41you'll find your purpose
00:31:42this is path one
00:31:43there's two paths
00:31:44path one
00:31:45I find my skill set
00:31:46and I engage it to help other people
00:31:48and become better at it
00:31:49so I'm becoming better at what I'm good at
00:31:51and I'm using it to help other people
00:31:53because I'm aware of what I'm quite good at
00:31:55and I know what knowledge I have
00:31:57what skills I have
00:31:58I have some self-awareness
00:31:59the other path that people often miss
00:32:02is actually I just start serving people
00:32:03I just start helping people
00:32:05I just start helping people
00:32:06and I start to notice what I enjoy about that
00:32:08and what I'm good at helping people with
00:32:10so that's Gandhi's part
00:32:11Gandhi said that you find yourself
00:32:13when you lose yourself in the service of others
00:32:15so for me those are the two paths
00:32:17of how do I find my passion
00:32:19and finding the intersect between those four areas
00:32:23the question I ask clients the most is
00:32:25what does success look like for you on this project?
00:32:28and I get them to really describe it to me
00:32:31let's say there's more than one thing in there
00:32:33I go
00:32:34now if you could only pick one of those things
00:32:36and the other ones didn't happen
00:32:38which one would you pick?
00:32:39and I'm trying to get them to sift through
00:32:41some of that conflict
00:32:42so we can really hone in on what we're trying to do
00:32:45and often times
00:32:46where ego comes in is like
00:32:48we've got the things that impress other people
00:32:50and then the real meaningful impact
00:32:52that we're trying to have
00:32:53and often times
00:32:54I'm not saying that the status things aren't nice
00:32:57and they're not impressive
00:33:00and they're not cool
00:33:01but we've got to make sure
00:33:02that they're not coming at the expense
00:33:04of those other things
00:33:06so motivation is a word
00:33:08it's a label
00:33:10that we put
00:33:11sort of events in our brain
00:33:14what you actually want is the outcome of that
00:33:17you want to do things when it's hard
00:33:19so I think that there are a few kind of things
00:33:22that we know work
00:33:23one is evidence of past successes
00:33:26if I go back to your memories
00:33:28and I reframe them as successes
00:33:30suddenly the current event that's the same
00:33:34is a success
00:33:35so I think that one thing is having success stories
00:33:38and identification stories
00:33:39as in you find
00:33:40there's a lot of people out there
00:33:41there was a person that is like you
00:33:43that had similar experience
00:33:44and chose the thing that you want to choose
00:33:46find this person or these people
00:33:48and it's going to rub into you
00:33:49so I get asked by my students often
00:33:51how do I become funnier
00:33:53how do I become smarter
00:33:55and like my one tip
00:33:56that I give them all the time
00:33:58is surround yourself with people
00:34:00that you want to be like
00:34:02the first thing is
00:34:04you must put your personal growth first
00:34:06okay
00:34:07so you must take your meditation practice
00:34:09your personal growth
00:34:10your breathing
00:34:11your gym
00:34:12that must come number one
00:34:13it must be more important than your business
00:34:15and you got to spend around an hour a day
00:34:18now if you can't
00:34:19half an hour a day works
00:34:20but you got to spend at least
00:34:22half an hour a day
00:34:23dedicating yourself to exercise
00:34:26meditation
00:34:27spiritual growth
00:34:29as you grow
00:34:31your business will grow
00:34:33now this advice doesn't come from me
00:34:34this advice comes from
00:34:35Sri Kumar Rao
00:34:36the great MBA professor
00:34:39at Kellogg and London Business School
00:34:41and he says the biggest thing that MBA students
00:34:43are not being taught
00:34:45is that their life shouldn't be about
00:34:47their business
00:34:48rather
00:34:49their life should be about
00:34:50their personal growth
00:34:51their business
00:34:52is nothing more than
00:34:53the greatest vehicle
00:34:54for that growth
00:34:55your business in short
00:34:57is like a gym
00:34:58it teaches you leadership
00:35:00it teaches you perseverance
00:35:02it teaches you stress resilience
00:35:04it teaches you how to plan
00:35:06but it is not you
00:35:07you are you
00:35:09your personal growth
00:35:10is what should be number one
00:35:11your business is just a vehicle
00:35:13Rao says if your business gets
00:35:14to a billion dollars
00:35:15it doesn't matter
00:35:17the question is
00:35:18did you grow
00:35:19if your business fails
00:35:20it doesn't matter
00:35:21the question is
00:35:22did you grow
00:35:23now when you take that attitude
00:35:24you become far more successful
00:35:26as an entrepreneur
00:35:27far more successful
00:35:28in business
00:35:29I cannot tell you the number of businesses
00:35:32I've had that have failed
00:35:33I shared one
00:35:34the early version of Instagram
00:35:36that was so painful
00:35:37but I learned from it
00:35:38and it gave me the wisdom
00:35:40to go on to the next one
00:35:41to the next one
00:35:42and the next one
00:35:43and the next one
00:35:44and so when you focus
00:35:45on your personal growth
00:35:46what happens is that
00:35:48even if a business fails
00:35:49even if an idea fails
00:35:51you emerge from it
00:35:53with new knowledge
00:35:54new data points
00:35:55new
00:35:56a new version of yourself
00:35:58that can do better
00:35:59on the next idea
00:36:00or the next business
00:36:01that's rule number one
00:36:02the second rule is
00:36:04is a rule called unity
00:36:06it means see yourself
00:36:07as a part of a larger whole
00:36:10of a larger human species
00:36:12do not cheat
00:36:14do not manipulate
00:36:15go into any relation
00:36:16all relationships
00:36:17with a win-win attitude
00:36:18never take advantage of people
00:36:20create products
00:36:21that deliver true value
00:36:22and are not just sold
00:36:23by salesiness
00:36:25so the unity rule
00:36:26is a key driving force
00:36:28in how I operate
00:36:29everything in my life
00:36:30I have no enemies
00:36:32I have no ill will
00:36:33towards anyone
00:36:34and I practice forgiveness
00:36:36every single day
00:36:37I forgive every person
00:36:39everything
00:36:40everyone that has wronged me
00:36:41forgiveness is actually
00:36:42a superpower
00:36:43studies have shown
00:36:44that when you practice
00:36:45radical forgiveness
00:36:46your life seems to get luckier
00:36:48your health improves
00:36:50your peace of mind goes up
00:36:51your sleep gets better
00:36:52and so the unity rule
00:36:54is a key piece of that
00:36:56it is the idea that unity
00:36:59is one of the most powerful
00:37:00value systems anyone can have
00:37:06it's we've almost gone bankrupt
00:37:08like at least three times
00:37:10but these type of moments
00:37:11they they they are soul crushing
00:37:13they they they keep you up at night
00:37:15but you gotta you gotta be prepared
00:37:18to go through them on your journey
00:37:21but again if you adopt the attitude
00:37:23that the number one thing is your growth
00:37:27is how much you're learning
00:37:28you're better able to go through
00:37:30these ups and these downs
00:37:32like the ups don't go to your head
00:37:34and the downs don't destroy you
00:37:37well so okay so firstly the word
00:37:39entrepreneur is a bull term right
00:37:42it's one of the most overused
00:37:43nonsense terms out there
00:37:45I can teach anybody to become an
00:37:47entrepreneur in two minutes flat
00:37:49all you gotta do is go to fiverr.com
00:37:51open an account and offer to make
00:37:54videos or images for someone
00:37:56boom you're self-employed
00:37:57you're an entrepreneur
00:37:58it's a bull term you have that
00:38:00and then you have at the end of the
00:38:02spectrum probably the greatest living
00:38:03entrepreneur today Elon Musk
00:38:05but the spectrum is so wide
00:38:07it's it's a bad definition
00:38:09so there are other definitions that
00:38:11you got to look at right you got to
00:38:12look at are you working in a job
00:38:15where you can earn the money you need
00:38:18to live the life you want while
00:38:20being fulfilled and happy doing the
00:38:22work you do I think that is the
00:38:23definition you don't have to be an
00:38:25entrepreneur for that many of the
00:38:26people creating the biggest changes
00:38:28in the world are not entrepreneurs
00:38:30think about the engineers at NASA
00:38:32think about the people who are
00:38:33inventing new technologies think
00:38:35about the people who come come up
00:38:38with new with new medicines that are
00:38:40changing lives many of these people
00:38:42are working for companies that they
00:38:44are paid well they love their jobs
00:38:46they're making a contribution to
00:38:47humanity and it is enough if you're
00:38:50that this bullshit idea that you got
00:38:52to be working for yourself is so
00:38:55outdated rather you got to look at
00:38:57three things number one can I
00:39:00exercise what I'm really good at
00:39:02doing number two do I love what I'm
00:39:05doing number three am I making money
00:39:08doing this it is a decision it's
00:39:17something that you have to decide
00:39:19and whatever it is that you decide
00:39:21you're going to end up seeing the
00:39:22evidence for that so you have to be
00:39:24really careful whether you decide
00:39:26that life is difficult it's this slew
00:39:29of things that's coming at you that's
00:39:30trying to break you and nothing ever
00:39:31good happens to you or if you choose
00:39:33to believe no matter what happens to
00:39:35you you can always choose your
00:39:36response you can always choose to
00:39:38believe that it's happening for you
00:39:40and not to you and in that
00:39:41perspective and having that mindset
00:39:43then you're going to begin to look
00:39:45for the solutions you're going to
00:39:46look for the ways out you're going to
00:39:47look for the lesson that you can
00:39:48learn in the hardship that is
00:39:49mindset it's a subset of beliefs about
00:39:54what you're capable of and what the
00:39:58world really is at its foundation
00:40:00whether it's working for you or
00:40:01against you so understand that these
00:40:03things are all a choice you had me
00:40:08write my vision for health wealth
00:40:10relationships career business
00:40:11finances charity fun experiences
00:40:13everything every year of my life he
00:40:15had these documents is I want you to
00:40:17read them every day and you're going
00:40:19to do it when you come into the
00:40:20office so that I know that you've done
00:40:22them and I want to I want you to run
00:40:23your fingers across them as you're
00:40:25reading them and then when you're
00:40:26finished one paragraph close your
00:40:28eyes and I want you to feel what would
00:40:32it be like if that was true so you got
00:40:35me to see it to touch it to close my
00:40:39eyes and visualize it and to feel it so
00:40:43at the time he didn't understand what
00:40:45he was really doing but he was causing
00:40:48me to create new neural patterns in my
00:40:50brain that did not exist before let me
00:40:57promise you if I can do it you can do
00:41:00it too often people look at me as the
00:41:02after picture and they don't realize
00:41:03just how much I had to crawl through
00:41:05including low self-esteem massive
00:41:08insecurities crippling anxiety having
00:41:12I at one point I couldn't even tell a
00:41:14story in front of five people in my own
00:41:16family because my voice was shaking I
00:41:18was so freaked out and right now I'm
00:41:20around one two three four five six
00:41:22seven looks like we have about seven
00:41:24people in this room I routinely speak
00:41:26in front of massive crowds and all of
00:41:29that was a process it is a process that
00:41:32is teachable it is things that you can
00:41:34go through to completely and radically
00:41:36change your mindset and in changing
00:41:38your mindset you change the wiring of
00:41:39your brain that's what I want you guys
00:41:42understand you can change the physical
00:41:43structures and the functions of your
00:41:45mind if you think and you believe and
00:41:51you emotionalize you visualize and you
00:41:54create your plan for how am I actually
00:41:57going to achieve this so what do I need
00:41:59to do when am I going to do it how
00:42:02specifically how am I going to tweak it
00:42:05measure it and iterate it so that I'm
00:42:07consistently making progress I learned
00:42:10the value of progress versus
00:42:12perfection none of my mentors ever had
00:42:17me focus on perfection let me focus on
00:42:20progress to just keep getting better
00:42:22little incremental gains every day
00:42:25every week every month every quarter
00:42:27and even when you move backwards a
00:42:29couple of steps what's the progress
00:42:31that you made in what you learned so I
00:42:33so I was taught that failure is an
00:42:36opportunity to learn and I was also
00:42:38taught to disassociate me being a
00:42:42failure from failing this was a big
00:42:47breakthrough moment for me when I
00:42:48really began to research the brain and
00:42:50came across the whole notion of brain
00:42:52plasticity when I was growing up people
00:42:54actually debated whether or not an old
00:42:57dog could learn new tricks and people
00:42:59said that you're born with a certain
00:43:01number of brain cells and that's it and
00:43:03hey every time you go out and party
00:43:04you're just diminishing your brain
00:43:05cells and you die with far fewer than
00:43:07you began with and now science has
00:43:09proven that absolutely is not true and
00:43:11being able to imagine that process I
00:43:13think will really help you guys people
00:43:15also hold the mistaken belief that only
00:43:17kids are able to learn that you know
00:43:19up until say 11 12 or 13 you know
00:43:21it's easy to learn and people often
00:43:23cite languages and after that it gets a
00:43:25lot harder but again that just isn't
00:43:27true it doesn't match the brain
00:43:28science just as a lifestyle we don't
00:43:31often put ourselves to the paces that
00:43:33kids are going through and that
00:43:34doesn't mean the kids don't have an
00:43:35easier time they do but it is
00:43:37certainly something that you can do to
00:43:39a profound extent as you get older but
00:43:41thinking that you can't is really going
00:43:42to hold you back initially it's hard
00:43:46and you have to use conscious effort to
00:43:49create the new beliefs he says but over
00:43:5230 days 60 days 90 days 180 days that
00:43:57new pattern that you're focusing on
00:43:59and paying attention to your brain
00:44:01basically says well I guess you really
00:44:03don't need those old patterns you keep
00:44:05activating these new ones let's just
00:44:07make these ones work and let's make
00:44:09these real the very meaning of life is
00:44:15to see how many skills you can acquire
00:44:18that have utility and then put those
00:44:20skills to use in the service of
00:44:22something bigger than yourself but the
00:44:24only way that you're going to be able
00:44:25to do that is to build into the core of
00:44:28your being the ability to endure life
00:44:31is hard life is going to kick you in
00:44:33the face there are going to be a
00:44:35thousand times in your life when
00:44:36you're going to want to give up and
00:44:37the only thing that is going to see
00:44:39you through the only thing that's going
00:44:40to make sure that you actually
00:44:42endure is your mindset and if you get
00:44:45that right if you lay the foundation
00:44:47for that if you put all the pieces in
00:44:49place then you're going to persevere then
00:44:53you're going to push through then
00:44:54you're going to be able to see things
00:44:55through to the end but if you don't do
00:44:57that then you're going to break and
00:45:00that's what I see happen to so many
00:45:01people and that's where my own life
00:45:03started was not believing in myself and
00:45:06that is one of the most important
00:45:08things for you to understand is that
00:45:10your mindset is one of the most
00:45:12important feeders into your perspective
00:45:14and perspective is everything I do
00:45:20find myself basically every day having
00:45:23to constantly reorient myself back to
00:45:25the goal back to the goal you're a
00:45:27learner you're a learner and learning
00:45:29you'll be able to actually achieve your
00:45:30goal so make sure you're obsessed with
00:45:31that we all have a story we have a
00:45:35money story a relationship story a
00:45:37health story we have a story for
00:45:39everything and then that story keeps
00:45:42recreating our lives over and over and
00:45:44over again and we have beliefs that
00:45:46support the story we have habits that
00:45:48support the story we have people that
00:45:49support the story we have systems that
00:45:51support our story and so my question I
00:45:54always ask people who would you be with
00:45:55a different story
00:45:57how many people believe that we could go
00:46:03beyond what we believe that we could go
00:46:05beyond and I think really the key to
00:46:08that one of the most obvious ways of
00:46:11doing that is reading I really feel like
00:46:14it's one of the most valuable skills to
00:46:16master today it's it's something where
00:46:19you're if somebody has decades of
00:46:20experience in anything and they put into
00:46:23a book and you could read it in a day or
00:46:25two or three or four you could download
00:46:28decades in the days I think it's the
00:46:30ultimate advantage there is and in Game
00:46:34of Thrones there's there's this quote
00:46:36saying that a reader lives a thousand
00:46:38lives a person who does not read lives
00:46:41only one first obstacle defective reading
00:46:46is lack of education it's not a skill
00:46:48that we were taught right you're not
00:46:50born with the ability to read and the
00:46:51last time you took a reading class how
00:46:53old were you six so has the difficult
00:46:58because the velocity has the variety has
00:47:01has the demand increased a little bit
00:47:03since you were six but we're still
00:47:05reading like we're six-year-old does that
00:47:08make sense and so you want to upgrade
00:47:09those kind of skills second obstacle to
00:47:12effective reading is lack of focus lack
00:47:14of focus how many of you when you read
00:47:17your mind wanders and you can't concentrate
00:47:20one of the reasons why is you're reading
00:47:22too slow and this is a big rumor being
00:47:25spread around I think by slow readers
00:47:27but if I if I ask you to read faster
00:47:30what do you think will happen to your
00:47:32reading understanding comprehension
00:47:34you feel like it'll go down in
00:47:36actuality it goes up like we have online
00:47:39program in a hundred hundred eighty country
00:47:41students so we have a lot of data fastest
00:47:43readers tend to have the best comprehension
00:47:45because they have the best focus because
00:47:47your brain is a supercomputer but when
00:47:49most people read they feed this
00:47:51supercomputer one word at a time
00:47:58metaphorically notice that feeling that
00:48:00you have the sensation you feel when I
00:48:01talk slowly you're like you know you're
00:48:03like in your mind after over time will
00:48:05start wandering it'll be distracted you
00:48:06start falling asleep you start doing
00:48:07other things isn't that what you're
00:48:09doing already when you're reading you're
00:48:11reading too slow just like when I talk
00:48:13too slow your mind goes everywhere that's
00:48:15the reason why and so when you go
00:48:17faster it's like driving a car faster
00:48:18you're going driving slow you know you're
00:48:20drinking your tea you're texting doing
00:48:22makeup you're you're you're doing all
00:48:24these different things but if you're
00:48:26racing a car you're just doing one
00:48:27thing you're just driving right and
00:48:30that's why when you read faster you
00:48:32have better focus and what because you
00:48:34have better focus you better
00:48:35comprehension the last reason I would
00:48:37say that we got a fix for your
00:48:39reading speed is this thing called
00:48:41sub vocalization what what's sub
00:48:44vocalization real quick the inner talk
00:48:49how many of you notice when you read
00:48:50something you hear an inner voice this
00:48:52voice inside your head reading along
00:48:54with you hopefully it's your own voice
00:48:57not like somebody else's voice the
00:49:00reason why it's a challenge is if you
00:49:02have to say all the words to
00:49:04understand them you can only read as
00:49:05fast as you could speak and you don't
00:49:08have to say New York City or Statue of
00:49:11Liberty or you know or even if it's an
00:49:13abbreviation NYC you don't have to say
00:49:15that don't understand what it is any
00:49:17more than you would say like a stop
00:49:18sign 95% of the words you've seen you
00:49:21don't have to pronounce that's why how
00:49:22many of you listen to audio books and
00:49:24and podcasts at higher speeds because
00:49:26you can understand it just fine right
00:49:28you just can't talk that fast and so
00:49:30that's why it's a limitation when
00:49:32you're reading now the last thing is
00:49:34this is just keep a reading list keep
00:49:37keep a list of like targeted books as
00:49:39you hear all the time keep it in your
00:49:41phone because I have like this
00:49:43everybody has a to-do list but I have
00:49:44like a to I have a really long to
00:49:46learn list and this is my like to read
00:49:48list and that's the thing one book
00:49:50could change your life forever when I
00:49:52first taught this one of those my
00:49:54first students she read 30 books in 30
00:49:56days I mean that could you imagine the
00:49:59books you would read not skimming or
00:50:00scanning again the gist of it not just
00:50:02because you can understand like I don't
00:50:03want you to skip it and not understand
00:50:04it like my clients are like you know
00:50:07they're they're financial advisors
00:50:09they're attorneys they're healers
00:50:10they're they're medical doctors you
00:50:12don't want your doctor get the gist
00:50:13of what she's reading right so you
00:50:15want them to focus so what I would
00:50:16say with this is like she read this I
00:50:19want to find out not how I know
00:50:21exactly how because the skills are
00:50:23simple guys I want to know why and I
00:50:25found out her mother was dying of
00:50:26terminal cancer and the book she was
00:50:28reading the book save her mom's life
00:50:30because she was only given two day two
00:50:32months to live by doctors and their
00:50:34book reading books that you read books
00:50:36on wellness energy medicine
00:50:38alternative medicine health diet and I
00:50:41was like good luck you know process
00:50:43of prayers six months later I get a
00:50:44call from this young lady and she's
00:50:46crying and crying crying finally when
00:50:48she stops I find out there tears of
00:50:49joy that her mother not only survive
00:50:51but it's really starting to get better
00:50:53doctors don't know how they don't
00:50:54know why they called it a miracle but
00:50:56her mother attributed a hundred percent
00:50:58to the great advice she got from her
00:50:59daughter who learned from all these
00:51:00books and I realized that that moment
00:51:05that me as a broken child who couldn't
00:51:07read for years and years I realized
00:51:09that would be my mission that
00:51:11knowledge if knowledge is power then
00:51:13learning and especially reading is
00:51:15your superpower
00:51:21procrastination usually comes from
00:51:22several factors feeling anxious
00:51:25about the task insecurity about your
00:51:27ability to complete the task or
00:51:29thinking there's a lot of time to get
00:51:31the task done even if there isn't
00:51:34not only is procrastination a common
00:51:36problem but it leads to more stress
00:51:39and can affect the academic performance
00:51:41of students to a devastating degree
00:51:43according to a study by study mode
00:51:45student psyche report distraction was
00:51:48found to be the most common reason
00:51:50for procrastination this is followed by
00:51:52feeling overwhelmed and unable to
00:51:55decide where to start not only does
00:51:58procrastination affect students grades
00:52:00but it can also be detrimental to the
00:52:02physical and mental health the
00:52:05importance of investing in resources to
00:52:07make sure affordable health care and
00:52:08access to mental health facilities is
00:52:10higher than ever if you are someone
00:52:13you know finds that procrastination is
00:52:16taking over your life talk to your local
00:52:18health care provider on steps you can
00:52:20take it is important to know that your
00:52:22mental health and well-being is important
00:52:25and that by taking care of yourself you
00:52:27can take on the world one task at a time
00:52:31ultimately your daily actions determine
00:52:35what your goals are it's up to you to
00:52:38make sure your actions and goals know
00:52:41what their roles are meaning you must
00:52:45self-assess look in that mirror and
00:52:49confess that you are not given one
00:52:51thousand percent you are not putting
00:52:53every ounce of your heart and soul into
00:52:55it now let's fix this your teacher or
00:52:58professor assigns the work your teacher
00:53:01or professor schedules the test it's up
00:53:04to you to manage your study time so you
00:53:06can put your best foot forward so when
00:53:09you're playing video games when you're
00:53:11shopping at tomorrow when you're surfing
00:53:13the internet at your leisure when you're
00:53:16out with your friends grabbing a pizza
00:53:18when you're browsing social media for
00:53:20hours hoping your likes are doubling
00:53:22or doing a host of other things that
00:53:24don't involve studying or completing
00:53:26an assignment that's what I mean when
00:53:28I say your actions and your goals are
00:53:30not in alignment because you wrote down
00:53:33graduate so replace the wasted time with
00:53:36study and watch how quick you become an
00:53:38excellent tester your academic stock will
00:53:41soar like an eagle when you become an
00:53:43intellectual time investor you want to
00:53:47know why you feel the way you feel you
00:53:49feel stuck you feel like you can't get
00:53:52anything done in a day because you have
00:53:56not made the decision to sit down and
00:53:58prioritize it the great Stephen Covey says
00:54:04the key is not to prioritize what's on your
00:54:09schedule but to schedule your priorities
00:54:13see the way to get started is to stop
00:54:16talking and start doing those that
00:54:21achieve at a high level they don't talk
00:54:24about it they be about it I love when T.D. Jake
00:54:29says don't tell me what you gonna do tell
00:54:34me you got it done if you want to be more
00:54:39productive then I need you to start doing
00:54:41things that the most productive people
00:54:43on this planet do and if you don't know
00:54:46what those things are sounds to me like
00:54:48you need to get yourself a mentor because
00:54:51there's someone you know in this life that
00:54:54you say man he or she is on top of it how
00:54:59can they continuously get so much done in
00:55:01a day why are they winning and I feel
00:55:04like I'm losing you need to study that
00:55:09person and if you know him personally
00:55:12don't set up a meeting and have a
00:55:14conversation with them and ask them for
00:55:16any tips tricks or hacks that they can
00:55:18give you to help you become more
00:55:21productive ask them if they'll take you
00:55:24under their wing and hold you
00:55:26accountable for doing things on a daily
00:55:29basis that puts you in a productive
00:55:31light and I'm sure they will tell you
00:55:35focus on being productive instead of
00:55:39just being busy see that's why you get
00:55:42yourself in trouble because you think
00:55:44you're making good use of your time and
00:55:47then at the end of the day you look up and
00:55:50realize you've got nothing done at all
00:55:53I'm sure that mentor would tell you make
00:55:57sure each and everything you do has a
00:56:01measurable outcome because if you don't
00:56:04know what the outcome is how can you
00:56:07achieve it if you can't say I got 10%
00:56:11done 20% done 50% done 75% done how you
00:56:17gonna know when you're finished see
00:56:20effective performance is preceded by
00:56:23painstaking preparation and the number
00:56:26one problem for those that are less
00:56:29productive is they simply fail to
00:56:32prepare they simply fail to plan they
00:56:36simply lack discipline as a matter of
00:56:39fact Abraham Lincoln said discipline is
00:56:45choosing between what you want now and
00:56:48what you want most and you keep telling
00:56:51the world that you want greatness you
00:56:54keep telling the world that you want
00:56:57to achieve at a high level but your
00:57:00actions your actions are painting a
00:57:05totally different picture your actions
00:57:07are saying something else so you get
00:57:10out of this life exactly what you put
00:57:12into it how you gonna get money out of
00:57:14your bank account you ain't put no
00:57:15money in how you gonna get production
00:57:19out of a day that you did everything
00:57:22opposite of what production really is if
00:57:26you're like most people it's painful to
00:57:30sit down and try to put together a
00:57:31plan it's painful to sit down and try to
00:57:34think about a b c d and make it all
00:57:39linear you just want to get up and go go
00:57:43go but at the end of the day you have
00:57:46nothing to show show show see champions
00:57:51they focus on the productivity they
00:57:55focus on the production because
00:57:58without production there is a massive
00:58:01reduction not only in their pay but in
00:58:06their spirit in their will so you have
00:58:10to associate more pain with not being
00:58:13productive then the pain you associate
00:58:16with sitting your butt down and taking the
00:58:20and taking the time to come up with a
00:58:22strategic plan that will lead you on the
00:58:25road to riches that will lead you on the
00:58:28road to success that will lead you on the
00:58:30road to greatness that will lead you on
00:58:32the road to massive productivity it's
00:58:37simple math you plus production equals
00:58:42next level greatness I love this quote it
00:58:48it says growth and productivity however
00:58:54it occurs has a disruptive side to it in
00:58:58the short term most things that contribute
00:59:02to growth and productivity are very very
00:59:05painful but anything worth having is
00:59:10going to be disruptive to your life
00:59:12anything worth having is going to cause
00:59:17some discomfort you know the motto if
00:59:21it doesn't shake you up a little bit if
00:59:23it doesn't make you uncomfortable the
00:59:27nine times out of ten it won't get
00:59:29results I want you to fast forward the
00:59:33things you do now are going to directly
00:59:37affect the outcome you achieve later but
00:59:42think about something that you didn't
00:59:43want to do in the past and you did it
00:59:45anyway remember how you felt how you felt
00:59:50that sense of pride how you were so proud
00:59:53of yourself how you were so glad you
00:59:56simply got started feels good to get
01:00:00some stuff done don't it that's exactly
01:00:03how you're gonna feel at the end of the
01:00:04day when you've turned your productivity
01:00:07meter up to 10 and you effectively put
01:00:11yourself in a position to win again and
01:00:14again and again so be more productive
01:00:18have one productive day and let that
01:00:21turn into 2 and then let that turn into
01:00:233 and let that turn into 4 and that
01:00:26turns into a week of production and that
01:00:28turns into a month of production and
01:00:30that month turns into a year of
01:00:31production and before you know it you
01:00:33are naturally productive each and every
01:00:35day of your life and now when you have a
01:00:39day that you are less productive you feel
01:00:43it and you do everything within your power
01:00:46to make sure the next day it doesn't
01:00:49happen again because now being productive
01:00:54productive is a part of who you are and
01:00:57you truly understand that to arrive at
01:01:00your destination the next level it
01:01:02requires massive productivity each and
01:01:07every day of your life this is a great
01:01:13day to win
